So I've got this kinda wild headcanon that the captain and crew of the captured French ship in 2x05 recognized Frenchie from somewhere, perhaps his time in service.

If you take a close look, all their eyes go to him. The captain especially looks like he has a moment of recognition before quickly averting his eyes. It's a "blink and you'll miss it" moment.

Since we know so little of Frenchie's backstory, it's fun to theorize!

(Of course, it could also just be the crew recognizing he looks really hot when he's tying people up 👀)

hi hi okay imagine. stede wants to brush out ed's hair the way izzy always does. maybe izzy is busy on deck taking note of damages after a raid. maybe they had an infestation and he's going over ration spoilage and inventory with roach. ed is tired and cranky and absentmindedly separating sections of curls and tugging them apart at the bottom where they get stuck together in knots. stede offers to help with the tangles, says he would love to give it a go and help ed relax

izzy walks in a few minutes later and immediately comes up and tells stede he's doing it all wrong but also gently takes the brush from him and shows him the right way - where to hold the hair, how to start at the bottom with little sections and work his way up, when to start with his fingers instead of the brush. neither of them can see it but ed is smiling so much his face might actually burst

Izzy would be like the hardest worker doing everything perfect but he wouldn't have Ed or Calico's charm and maybe he'd say one wrong thing and just get a beating. He'd want to be teacher's pet but Hornigold just never liked him. Ed was for sure his favorite with Jack following closely behind.

Actually I've changed my mind.

I want Ed and Stede to feel like stiff coworkers when they reunite. I want them to fight, and I want Stede to win on a Muppetsy technicality, and I want him to demand his place back as Ed's co-captain.

But that's all.

I want the crew to sort themselves into those who consider themselves more Blackbeard's employees, and those who consider themselves Stede's, and I want Stede to slowly win over the former group and integrate them into the latter.

I want story time to come back. I want Roach to chase out Ed's cook with threats and knives. I want Fang to let Lucius out of the walls of the ship so Lucius can spend the night cuddling between him and Pete. I want Jim to stick around out of curiosity, and also because no way is Oluwande leaving Stede, and besides, Jim has just started teaching the New Crew™ how to properly use knives. It would be rude for them to just dip out.

I want Ed to press his ear against the inside of the cabin door one night as Stede re(re-re-re)tells the story of the fuckery that "killed Stede Bonnet". I want Ed to pretend he still has no idea, even though he always listens when Stede tells that story and laughs at all the same bits.

I want Stede to sleep on the couch.

I want them to argue over Ed getting rid of Stede's books because, damnit, it's not alright. I want them to fight over strategic decisions, and for Stede to start shouting when Izzy sides with Ed. I want Stede to be right, just one time, and for Ed to apologize.

I want Stede and Ed to commit one more fuckery. One more hoax, where they infiltrate a ship full of high society dickheads, and for Ed to be the belle of the ball again, but this time, for him to notice that Stede isn't. Deciding to leave these things behind doesn't mean you automatically become decent at them. But when someone talks a little too loudly over Stede, or says something a little too passive aggressive - when Stede looks down or winces - I want Ed to break and defend him because, damn it, nobody talks about the man he loves (he loves, God she still loves so fucking much he can't stand it) like he's not better than all these rich fucks. Like he's not good, or kind, or deserving, or wonderful, or bright as the fucking sun.

And when they get back to the Revenge - back home - I want Ed to start telling Stede that. To start telling Stede that he didn't deserve to be laughed at, or insulted, or that Ed understands perfectly now why he left all that behind and he's sorry he didn't understand before how much of a wound that leaves after so long, and that he's sorry about the books and the crew and the frilly shirts-

I want Stede to kiss him.

In a broken little voice, I want Ed to say "You came back."

And I want Stede to take Ed's red silk out of his pocket where he's been keeping it close, saving it all these weeks, and press it into Ed's hand and say "Never left."

In the early onset of their relationship, Stede and Ed had a tendency to lay awake, giggling into the night, still giddy at the notion of their togetherness. Ed lay on his back, with Stede nestled against his side tracing the worn lines of his tattoos, attempting to map out the landscape of a previous lifetime. Quietly he would inquire as to the origin of each; what was their meaning, where was he when he got it, how old was he?

Most of the tattoos, Ed says, he barely remembers getting. If he does remember they rarely have interesting stories.

“Got this one because I thought it would look cool.”

“This one’s from a dare against Jack.”

“This one is a reminder.”

Stede was surprised to find that Izzy had done many of them. Most of the smaller ones at least, Ed had said, the larger ones—they both decided— were best handled by more qualified artists. According to Ed, Izzy was fairly good with a needle, and shockingly good at eyeballing symmetry. Stede could agree, especially next to the shaky linework of Jack’s masterfully illustrated…

“Think it’s supposed to be a dolphin? I don’t know mate, we were fucking wasted.”

They laugh together, and when it settles Stede resumes his journey across Ed’s skin. He gets to a small tattoo located high on his thigh, faded but still clearly visible, two swords crossed.

“And this one?” Stede suspects it to be another of the ornamental ones, but Ed pauses.

“One of the first tattoos I ever got. Might actually be the first.” Ed traces over it idly as he speaks. “I got it for Iz. It’s my matching tattoo to his.” He laughs nervously. “Not a one-for-one match, but he did let me mark him— my north star.” He taps his cheek just below his right eye. “And I got his swords.”

Stede hums to himself thoughtfully. Just like all the others he asks, “How old were you?”

“Fuck, had to be only twenty at the time. Remember being sorta nervous about the pain, but Jack already had at least ten, so he kept telling me the thigh wouldn’t hurt much at all. But honestly, the pain wasn’t actually going to stop me, cause I wanted it so badly. I was so set on the swords. I even stole Iz’s sword to show to the artist because I needed it to be accurate.” Ed had a far-off look in his eye. “He was right pissed at me for that, but showing him the tattoo afterward softened the blow.”

“And Izzy?” Stede’s voice is softer than before.

“Izzy? He was closer to thirty, but he didn’t get his at the same time. Wasn’t until we mutinied that I gave him his star. It was my idea. I was still hanging onto the idea of matching. Originally, I was gonna go for something more dangerous looking, put it on his thigh, so we could be a proper pair, but he stopped me. It ended up being his idea to do the star. Was shocked when he told me where he wanted it.”

Ed's hand lingers over the swords, with unspoken words caught in his throat. When he finally opens his mouth to speak again, Stede expects him to elaborate but instead, he simply moves on to the next tattoo without prompting. Stede half listens, pondering privately, trying to picture a world in which Ed was chasing after Izzy.

I think when the crew all reunite and we find out Lucius is still alive, Lucius should not be angry with Ed for trying to kill him, but he should be angry with Stede “because you abandoned your boyfriend and he tried to murder me!”

I hc Zheng as having trichotillomania bc of the offhand comment by auntie and just had a brain blast that nearly sent me to my knees.

Imagining that Alma also has trichotillomania and when Stede is out with the crew for drinks one time he sees Zheng twisting a hair between her fingers and tugging it mindlessly, sees Olu put his hand on her wrist and smile at her when she looks at him and sheepishly puts her hands in her lap where Olu picks one up to hold in his own.

And Stede’s heart clenches bc he recognizes that move and he knows these people and suddenly Alma’s compulsion doesn’t feel so big and scary and his tongue’s a bit loose from the booze and he leans over and with so much affection that Zheng cannot place, asks her “do you have trichotillomania?” and Zheng’s mouth just opens and closes and she looks at Olu who’s just as shocked and Stede is like ‘oopsies social faux pas ignore me’ and Zheng goes “no no I don’t mind I just…no one knows what that is you just surprised me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry it’s just - my daughter has that and she feels, well we feel kind of lost about what to do. We’ve never met anyone else with it.”

And Zheng gives him tips to pass along to Alma and how she appreciates having people approach her trich and even agrees to chat with Alma if she’d like that when Stede tells her about it and yes I’m projecting a deep desire for someone else in my life to understand my struggle and for a parent figure to be tripping over themselves to learn how to better help me but isn’t that so sweet???
