I wasn’t in a hurry. I never have to be in any particular place at any particular time. Let time watch me, not me it.

Olga and Helga are a strange case concerning the Scapegoat/Golden Child dynamic because Olga does want to be close to her sister but doesn't seem to totally get that the thing standing in the way of that is her parents' blatant favoritism. Neither girl is at fault, but it's hard to get close when your parents fawn over one sibling and ignore the other.

Would Tsurumi's character arc changed to a grand extent if the fate of Olga and Fina was different? In a way they lived and Tsurumi had less to no trauma about his family. Is his arc really lowkey turns around what happened to his family, kind of? What changed do you think it would make for his role in GK if that event went different in which they lived?
It's an interesting question!
Possibly it would have, as he might have decided to remain in Russia with them, maybe even switch loyalties between Russia and Japan, or he would take them back to Japan with him and not harbour any other ambition than be with them or, at least, wouldn't have harboured such a great grudge toward Wilk and might have remained a more human person or, at least, a less ambitious one.
There's to say though, in the last third of the manga his family drama is underused, basically it merely became an excuse to guilt trip Sofia into talking and into letting Tsurumi kill her. Tsurumi insists it's not his family drama what's moving him, and even though it's made clear he hates Wilk because he blames him for his loss and transferres this hate to Asirpa... well, all this hate just exists and goes nowhere.
It's not a motive, it's not an obstacle to overcome, it's not something that causes him to make mistakes (unless we want to consider the fact his brain started leaking like crazy in Vol 21 when he talks with Asirpa and never again [by the way this wasn't in the magazine version so if you're reading the mangazine version you might not know what I'm talking about]).
So... who knows?
The story wanted to say that loss was the thing that turned him into the Tsurumi we know so, without it, we wouldn't have Tsurumi therefore theoretically Fina and Olga's survival would have been a big change for him... but again, with how underused the whole thing was, we can't really tell what exactly it would have changed.
That's a question, I guess, only Noda knows the answer of.
Still thank you for your ask!

I love this Swedish squad (plus Glas and Hedvig) and it's just so upsetting and frustrating and angering to see them go so far in the World Cup/Olympics only to fall short at the 11th hour. They built momentum throughout the tournament which worked great, I was so nervous for them at the beginning. But they kept getting better and turning up the heat every match so I thought this would be their year... So disappointing they played well and really they just deserve so much more than bronze matches.
Segar doesn't have many more tournaments left and Hedvig might be off the squad in general, so I think the next 'oldest' are Kosse and Linda.... I'm just hoping they get a gold once. Just once. Once for the old squad would be amazing, then the new squad can take it even further!

And the day was full of silence and snow, The air sparkled as if the sun from the sky Had sent down a myriad of fireflies, The earth seemed like a child's dream world, Where the impossible is possible, Where the correctness of all truths and one waited only for miracles, In it the snow was golden and the forest blue.

And you believed, as when you were a child, without doubt, That you're stronger than the earth's gravity, And that Good will always overcome Evil, And the world was quiet, clear and bright… /Olga Anikeeva 2

hi hi hi ceil! I hope you're doing well. My new year's resolution is to read more books, and I was just wondering if there were any you would rec? I really enjoy the stuff you right, and wondered where you get the inspiration from
hi hi!!!! im doing great actually, i had a nice day :))
oh i have SO many!! these are just my personal favourite and i read a lot of literary fiction and non-fiction and 'weird' lit, so hopefully something on this list sounds fun to you:
glass, irony, and god by anne carson [poetry - although i would recommend absolutely anything by anne carson]
half-light: collected poems 1965-2016 by frank bidart [poetry - honestly one of the poets you MUST read if you love poetry in my opinion - bidart, carson, dionne brand, louise gluck, paul celan, maggie nelson, adrienne rich, rainer maria rilke, t.s eliot, jan zwicky, kahlil gibran]
rings of saturn by w.g. sebald [literary fiction - unnamed narrator takes a walking tour of suffolk, england, and the book is about the encoded meaning found in everything; i love sebald so so much]
house of leaves by mark danielewski [architectural / weird horror; cult classic; spooky and eerie in the best way; high concept, a bit complicated to follow but worth it]
drive your plow over the bones of the dead by olga tokarczuk [fiction / thriller, a bit - read this last month and this book hooked me oh my god, it was so good]
severance by ling ma [apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic - possibly one of my fave books in this genre]
the overstory by richard powers [environmental fiction - multiple different narratives that sometimes converge, sometimes don't; truly had me weepy at points] (also, if you like environmental books, the golden spruce by john vaillant)
the complete cosmicomics by italo calvino [strange literary fiction, short stories - oh these are so delightfully strange and zippy and weird, they feel like eating starbursts or something!!!]
underland by robert macfarlane [non-fiction - this consumed me for days when i read oh my god. all about underground structures, catacombs, caves and caving, mines, radioactive waste disposal, etc]
the lonely city by olivia laing [non-fiction - a sad book, but still hopeful; she has such insightful commentary on art and queer history too]
the library at mount char by scott hawkins [weird fiction - so cool, SUCH a cool fun book oh my god. very interesting premise and executed to perfection]
some other names i'd recommend: eileen myles, maggie nelson, rebecca solnit, and ursula k. leguin (for your scifi/fantasy needs)
