From 7 March to 16 July 2023, the Palais Galliera is organising an exhibition focusing on the year 1997, a watershed year in the history of contemporary fashion. 1997 was both a high point of 1990s fashion and the gateway to the new millennium. It brought a flurry of collections, shows, new appointments, openings and events that defined the fashion scene as we know it today. Such was its impact that 1997 can be thought of as the launching pad for 21st century fashion. 1997 was notable for a number of emblematic collections: bodies deformed by Comme des Garçons with the Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body collection, Martin Margiela’s conceptualised garments in the Stockman collection, and Raf Simons’s redefinition of the canons of male beauty in the Black Palms collection. The magazine Vogue Paris defined the 1997 Spring-Summer haute couture season as the ‘Big Bang’ that Paris needed in order to regain its place as the international capital of fashion in an era of economic crisis and intense global competition. But there’s no denying that 1997 was a vintage year. It saw the arrival in haute couture of star designers from the 1980s, such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler, while the legendary French fashion houses were taken over by a new generation of British designers, with Alexander McQueen at Givenchy and John Galliano at Christian Dior.

The globalisation of fashion gathered pace, foreshadowing the 2000s and 2010s. Young, little-known artistic directors rose to prominence, either on their own or at the head of major fashion houses: Hedi Slimane, Stella McCartney, Nicolas Ghesquière, Olivier Theyskens – names that are still shaping fashion today. A whole series of events marked the beginning of the new era: the concept store Colette opened and stayed at the epicentre of fashion for the next 20 years. But also, that same year, the world of fashion was shaken by the tragic death of Gianni Versace. The chronological layout of the exhibition features over 50 silhouettes from the Palais Galliera collections, along with loans from museums and international collectors and fashion houses. And it also includes videos and some outstanding archive documents. The exhibition 1997 Fashion Big Bang is an invitation to discover or to relive key events from this ‘explosive’ year in fashion history.

Many flowering plants can self-pollinate, or transfer pollen between their own blossoms for seed generation and propagation, but most of these plants have relied on pollinators such as butterflies and bees to reproduce.

Now — amid declines reported in many pollinator populations — a new study on the evolution of one flower species’ mating system has revealed a remarkable shift that could exacerbate the challenges faced by the plants’ insect partners.The flowers’ reproductive evolution may be linked to environmental changes such as habitat destruction and rapid ongoing decreases in pollinator biodiversity, according to Samson Acoca-Pidolle, who led the study published December 19 in the journal New Phytologist.

Comparing seeds of wild field pansies collected decades ago in France with the plants’ modern descendants, Acoca-Pidolle and his colleagues discovered that today’s flowers are smaller and produce less nectar as a result of increased self-pollination, which has direct impacts on pollinator behavior. The pansies of the past self-fertilized less and attracted far more pollinators than those of the present, according to the study.

“This may increase the pollinator decline and cause a vicious feedback cycle,” study coauthor Pierre-Olivier Cheptou told CNN. If plants produce less nectar, there will be less food available to pollinators, which will in turn accelerate the rate at which the animals’ numbers dwindle, he explained.

plot: the story starts in north caydor. kids from all different districts and ways of life are selected for a task force; to infiltrate a child-run crime syndicate and take it down. the task force is organised by the military, and is a top secret project.

these kids were selected due to being highly capable and having great skill sets. to find the kids, a competition began nationwide, inviting children (those under 24) to try for a place at 'highland excellence school'. the nation is facing a poverty and crime problem, and winning the competition guarantees a living place and future job prospects for family members.

the kids that win the competition are sent to do a year of formal training at a "world-class school". the school only has north caydor students (the civilisations prefer to keep to themselves).

the story starts at rika's first 'mission', where she is on an expedition with casimir, simon and posey to south caydor, representing the school at an aireverie-wide education meet. their goal is to keep up a cover, make friends with kids from the other nations and gather information.

The Age of Extinction: Flowers ‘Giving Up’ On Scarce Insects And Evolving To Self-Pollinate, Say Scientists

French wild pansies are producing smaller flowers and less nectar than 20 to 30 years ago in ‘startling’ act of evolution, study shows

Flowers are “giving up on” pollinators and evolving to be less attractive to them as insect numbers decline, researchers have said.

A study has found the flowers of field pansies growing near Paris are 10% smaller and produce 20% less nectar than flowers growing in the same fields 20 to 30 years ago. They are also less frequently visited by insects.

“Our study shows that pansies are evolving to give up on their pollinators,” said Pierre-Olivier Cheptou, one of the study’s authors and a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. “They are evolving towards self-pollination, where each plant reproduces with itself, which works in the short term but may well limit their capacity to adapt to future environmental changes.”

Plants produce nectar for insects, and in return insects transport pollen between plants. This mutually beneficial relationship has formed over millions of years of coevolution. But pansies and pollinators may now be stuck in a vicious cycle: plants are producing less nectar and this means there will be less food available to insects, which will in turn accelerate declines.

“Our results show that the ancient interactions linking pansies to their pollinators are disappearing fast,” said lead author Samson Acoca-Pidolle, a doctoral researcher at the University of Montpellier. “We were surprised to find that these plants are evolving so quickly.”

Insect declines have been reported by studies across Europe. One study on German nature reserves found that from 1989 to 2016 the overall weight of insects caught in traps fell by 75%. Acoca-Pidolle added: “Our results show that the effects of pollinator declines are not easily reversible, because plants have already started to change. Conservation measures are therefore urgently needed to halt and reverse pollinator declines.”

The method used in the study is called “resurrection ecology”. It involved germinating ancestral pansy plants from seeds collected in the 1990s and 2000s, which were being stored in the national botanical conservatories. The team compared how four populations of field pansies (Viola arvensis) had changed during this period.

Other than changes to the flowers, they found no other changes between the populations, such as the leaf size or total size of the plant, according to the paper, published in the journal New Phytologist.

If flowers are not likely to attract insects, then a plant is wasting energy making them large and nectar-rich. Previous research has shown the percentage of field pansies relying on self-pollination has increased by 25% over the past 20 years.

“This is a particularly exciting finding as it shows evolution happening in real time,” said Dr Philip Donkersley, from Lancaster University, who was not involved in the study.

“The fact that these flowers are changing their strategy in response to decreasing pollinator abundance is quite startling. This research shows a plant undoing thousands of years of evolution in response to a phenomenon that has been around for only 50 years.

“Although most research has been done in Europe and North America, we know that pollinator declines are a global phenomenon. These results may just be the tip of the iceberg: areas with far greater plant diversity will likely have many more examples of wild plants changing their pollination strategies in response to a lack of pollinators.”

Similar processes can be seen in invasive populations that need to adapt new ecological niches. Populations of foxglove have evolved to be pollinated by bumblebees in Europe. However, 200 years ago they were introduced to Costa Rica and Colombia, and they have since changed the shape of their flowers so they can be pollinated by hummingbirds, researchers found.

Other research shows plants that are unable to self-pollinate go the other way, producing more pollen when pollinators are scarce. Because they cannot resort to other methods, they have to outcompete other plants to attract a shrinking number of pollinators.

Prof Phil Stevenson, from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, who was also not involved in the research, said it made sense that traits that guide or reward pollinators are likely to change when the number of pollinators drops, especially among species that have the option of self-pollinating.

“This is especially so for reproduction,” he said, “which is arguably the most important living function of organisms and likely the most adaptive trait of all.”

Manon Massé a rappelé les propositions du parti autres que celles au sujet de l’environnement qui résonnent avec les préoccupations de la jeune génération:

Gratuité des contraceptifs et des produits d’hygiène menstruelle dans les établissements éducatifs et institutionnels

Contrôle des loyers qui limite les hausses à l’indice du Tribunal administratif du logement et moratoire sur les rénovictions

Politique nationale de rémunération des stages

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois a rappelé que les jeunes représentent environ le tiers de l’électorat, mais que cette tranche de la population a tendance à moins voter que les autres. Or, en raison des bureaux de vote sur les campus, il est possible d’inverser la tendance et que les jeunes se saisissent du pouvoir qu’ils détiennent.

Pour l’occasion, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois et Manon étaient accompagnés d’un groupe de candidats et candidates âgés entre 18 et 30 ans comprenant Elisabeth Labelle (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce), Émile Bellerose-Simard (Masson), Mike Owen Sebagenzi (Pontiac), Amélie Drainville (Berthier), Jean-Philippe Samson (Vachon), Shophika Vaithyanathasarma (Marie-Victorin), Hilal Pilavci (D'Arcy-McGee), Jean-Claude Mugaba (La Pinière), Marc-Olivier Neveu (Saint-Jérôme) et Jessy Léger (Fabre).

The Jazz Singer (Richard Fleischer, 1980)

Autor de tres de la mejores películas anglosajonas del pasado decenio —10, Rillington Place (El estrangulador de Rillington Place, 1970), The New Centurions (Los nuevos centuriones, 1972) y Mandingo (1975)—, el veterano Richard Fleischer parece empeñado —y tal vez no le falten excusas para ello, en vista de lo sucedido con las carreras de otros directores de su edad— en mantenerse en activo a todo precio, en no dejar que una pausa de dos años pueda interpretarse como una señal de cansancio, debilitamiento o senilidad. De otro modo no se comprende que este hombre, hasta hace poco muy exigente, acepte con creciente frecuencia encargos indignos de su categoría, desesperadamente ineptos o a medio cocer y tan ajenos a sus preocupaciones, inclinaciones y dotes, como Doctor Dolittle (El extravagante Doctor Dolittle, 1967), Che! (1969), The Incredible Sarah (Sara, 1976), Ashanti (Ébano, 1979) o este absurdo y extemporáneo remake de la muy mediocre película que, en 1927 y en virtud del atractivo de su novedad técnica, provocó la muerte del cine mudo en su momento de máximo esplendor y la irrupción apresurada del sonoro.

Aunque el arrollador éxito comercial de la versión de Alan Crosland poco tuvo que ver con la historia que contaba, supongo que la obra teatral del ilustre guionista (nueve grandes Lubitsch y Suspicion, de Hitchcock) Samson Raphaelson, tío de Bob Rafelson, tendría algún sentido en su época, y puede que para su autor abordase cuestiones personalmente relevantes. Sin embargo, no acierto a imaginar qué razón —como no sea la falta de imaginación e inventiva que cabe sospechar tras la insólita proliferación de segundas y terceras versiones, partes, derivaciones y otras secuelas que corroen al cine americano desde hace unos años puede impulsar hoy a producir, adaptar al «gusto del día», interpretar, realizar nuevamente tan inverosímil, localista, anacrónica y minoritaria fábula, a menos que se optase por enfocarla desde un punto de vista humorístico, como puro disparate, y se encomendase su dirección al vulgar pero dinámico John Landis (o incluso al zafio pero taquillero Mel Brooks), y se pusiese a su disposición un reparto adecuado a tal perspectiva: el cantor de sinagoga podría ser Jerry Lewis —en lugar de Neil Diamond, que se revela aún peor actor que cantante—; su amante, Bette Midler —pues Lucie Arnaz, pese a ser hija de Lucille Ball, no es nada graciosa—; su padre, Woody Allen, debidamente envejecido y caracterizado —y no un Laurence Olivier, más petulante e irritantemente exasperado que nunca—, y los tres componentes del grupo de rock con el que, embadurnado de negro, actúa Yussel Rabinovitch en una de las pocas escenas en que Fleischer parece haber intuido —sin atreverse a explotarlas— posibilidades cómicas, por ejemplo, Richard Pryor, Roscoe Lee Browne y Antonio Fargas.

Lo que no entiendo es que se pretenda «actualizar» semejante folletín lacrimógeno tomándoselo en serio, porque dudo que alguien pueda creérselo en 1981: Fleischer, desde luego, demuestra su escepticismo con un rutinario savoir faire que vacila, sin ton ni son, entre la vulgaridad televisivo-estereofónica y la afectación crepuscular. Se nota que no se siente a gusto en esta camisa de once varas. Aparte de eso, tras el estrepitoso fracaso de tres films consecutivos —The Prince and the Pauper/Crossed Swords (El príncipe y el mendigo, 1977), que tenía que haber hecho, por lo menos, tan bien como Keighley cuarenta años antes; Ashanti y la que nos ocupa—, debería empezar a preocuparse, no sea que a algún productor se le ocurra verlas y decida que Fleischer no está en buena forma mental, por ágil y resistente que pueda mantenerse físicamente.
