Open_Collab - Patrick Thomas

L’Open_Collab est un projet international lancé par le designer allemand Patrick Thomas dont le concept est d’encourager la collaboration et l’expérimentation en temps réel entre designer. L’idée lui est d’abord venue en explorant les juxtapositions d’éléments aléatoire dans le cadre de la sérigraphie, puis de l’impression laser.  

Des sessions sont organisées autour d’un thème aléatoire, et chacun est libre d’y participer. Celles-ci peuvent aussi être organisées par pays, ville, ou encore par thème. Les designers prenant part au projet uploadent des images ou des éléments typographiques en noir et blanc, placés sur un modèle de grille donné par le site, et le logiciel d’Open_Collab se charge de générer des compositions aléatoires et uniques. Sur une session ouverte de 2 semaines, on peut compter jusqu’à 30′000 compositions différentes.

L’originalité du projet se trouve dans la dimension participative de celui-ci. N’importe qui disposant d’un logiciel de traitement graphique peut y participer et voir des éléments graphiques qu’il/elle aura créé être associés à des éléments provenant de parfaits étrangers dont le seul point commun est d’avoir utilisé une grille donnée. L’idée de rendre une idée et une grille internationale force les graphistes à sortir de leur zone de confort car ils ne peuvant pas contrôler le résultat final, qui sera aléatoire.

Generative Collage - Initial Experiment

I’ve been playing around with processing and found this bit of code in a book I’ve been reading about it. It uses an array to retrieve images from the data folder and then places them on a random place in the display and randomly rotates them to create a collage every time you press the mouse. You can also apply blend modes to it to create an interesting effect.

I started using this code with some of my mini collages and elements from the open_collab session we did. I saved them as PNGs so the background would be transparent.

‘Gil Sans is not a very rock and roll type’

Mixing 20th century and 21st century design production and styles.

In 2010 he set up his studio in Berlin, after moving from Barcelona. Here he was asked to become a tutor in Graphic Communication.

Collects wooden type, and letterpress examples which he continuously uses in his work. Collect postcards, stickers and posters, They provide great content to repurpose for your own work. 

He advises to always keep a sketchbook as this allows you future inspiration for your work and its a great way to have reference of a certain time of your life.

He loves Ariel as a typeface as its so versatile.

He designed the logo for Desigal, He designed the identity for Abby road. He was nominated for a grammy. He worked with The New York Times.

Protest stencil toolkit, this is a book of protest stencils to identify all the popular stencils of modern day protest which can be used and torn apart to be used in anyway wanted by the reader. 

Open_Collab- inspired by a trip to Rome where he had no silk screen or way of printing other than a typical digital printer. He collected design from his day and used it to overlay and combine imagery. This being freeing as you don’t need to apply logic or meaning to the prints. From here he began running workshops to encourage students to collaborate creatively. Its been run roughly in 15 countries.
