We definitely need more Thenamesh presidency AU!
Would you write more? Maybe Thena has to do an interview and the interviewer is a bit too friendly and asks her some subtile weird questions and basically undresses her with his eyes? Let Gil step in and protect his girlfriend in the most professional way? 😄
Thank you! Keep up your amazing work! ❤️
"Thank you for joining me, Madam President."
Thena smiled, nodding courteously but quiet thus far. Not only did she have to be careful of every single word she said these days, but she couldn't afford to get tired and run low on energy part way through the possibly lengthy interview.
"The rumours are true," her interviewer smiled, and that was always a dangerous start to a sentence. He tilted his head at her, "you are as beautiful as you are intimidating."
Gil looked up from Thena's schedule in his hand.
Thena tilted her head, though, "is that part of the question."
Eros laughed, "no, you're right it's off the record. Call it an attempt to get to know you?"
"I believe that is what the interview will be for."
Again, Eros took no offense to what would be a dry response to some and a defensive remark to most. He laughed, letting it roll off of him. He was renowned for his good nature, as well as being so young for the field of very serious televised journalism. He was popular with younger viewers for his looks.
They needed this interview to secure the young vote--the key to real, effective positive change.
"Yes ma'am, I am very honoured to have the opportunity, let it be said," Eros sat up a little straighter, almost like a professional interviewing the president. He had a dry kind of tone, his words somewhat running together.
"Your show is quite popular," Thena began her part of the battle (Sersi had advised her not to call it that). She had to meet him toe to toe so he didn't twist anything out of her, nor get the chance to misrepresent anything. "My people were happy to arrange the interview."
Kingo had told her that they had to do well with Eros if they wanted any relevance with young people beyond being known as the era of betrayal.
"Careful not to flatter me, ma'am," Eros continued to schmooze as if they were having drinks at a work conference as opposed to meeting in a secure location for journalistic purposes. He ran a hand through his hair. "I am prone to ego."
"A privilege few can afford."
"I believe you could be afforded anything," he tilted his head, his eyes drifting over her for just a second.
Thena shifted in her chair. Her hands were clasped together, because it was safer than having them loose enough to fidget and betray micro-expressions for her.
Gil cleared his throat off to the side, motioning for things to keep moving for the sake of time. He was frowning.
"So, Madam President," Eros began a proper question as if he hadn't been blatantly flirting with her - the most powerful woman in the country - seconds ago. "You have arrived to a rather precarious position."
Finally the interview began in earnest. Gil drifted around the edges of it, of course asked to keep his presence to a minimum, but permitted to stay in Thena's proximity, as was her security.
A few things were off limits--the direct mention of Ikaris' vacated position, the status of the staff investigations after his betrayal, suspects, that kind of thing. Although the ramifications of such things were technically fair game.
There were two cameras set up strategically on tripods. Eros' show would use edited footage of the interview, which would be subject to their review for security reasons. Gil mostly stayed behind Thena's shoulder, out of the frame, keeping his eyes on the popular show host.
"Now, I would like to ask," Eros looked up from his dossier of questions and points to bring up. He had done so a few times already and every time he did, the tone of the interview would...shift. "And this can be off the record, if you like."
Gil rolled his eyes.
"But it must be said that this is the first time an unmarried woman has come to power as you have." There it was. Gil shook his head faintly, although it seemed Eros was done taking his silent direction. "Does this affect the office you keep, in any way?"
"Why would it?" Thena asked flatly, not only not dignifying his question but also answering the real point of it. "No one in the cabinet minds if I am married or not, only if I can do the job of serving our country."
"So would you say you're on the market?"
Gil snapped Thena's schedule closed, as loudly as he could but not nearly as loudly as he would like. Eros looked up at him; he swiped his hand across his throat, telling him to cut it.
Eros barely acknowledged being told to back off but leaned back in his chair again. Of course doing so gave him another opportunity to run his eyes over Thena.
She was wearing a light grey pantsuit, but the way he was looking at her certainly seemed as if she were half dressed.
"Perhaps we should take five," Eros suggested in a much more - and perhaps falsely - amiable tone. He uncrossed his legs and stood with his dossier in hand. "I am happy to fetch you some water, ma'am."
Gil held out his hand for Thena to hold as she stood. "No outside food or drink--thank you."
The 'thank you' really was an afterthought.
"Of course," Eros nodded, giving his most charming smile. "I shall return in a moment, then."
Security both let him out and followed him as an escort. Such was the requirement of being alone in a room with Madam President herself.
Thena sighed, accepting the water bottle Gil himself was holding, "how long is this?"
"Probably another hour," he chuckled, speaking quietly as they hovered together. "You're doing great so far. You haven't even told him to go fuck himself."
Thena let out a quiet laugh against her hand, but it was certainly real. A few of the security team laughed too (those close enough to them to hear it).
Gil angled his shoulder for her, getting as close as they could afford when not totally alone. Although it didn't stop his eyes from being a little too soft when he looked at her. "Just a little more. I'm right here if you need me."
Thena's eyes weren't much better at keeping their monumental secret. "Thank you, as always."
Gil chuckled, taking the water bottle from her, "you know there's no need."
Her hand brushed against his on the way, "still."
A knock on the door signalled that their guest was back.
Thena sighed but let Gil hold her hand as she sat down again. He leaned down to her ear, "I'm gonna kill him if he asks you about being single again."
Thena laughed, although she couldn't reply. She gave his hand one more little squeeze, prepared to delve back into their work.
"Come in," Gil announced, although he stayed at the edge of Thena's chair. Eros nodded to him as he walked back into the room and to his own seat. Gil kept his eye on him, "limit personal questions going forward."
It was a very straightforward statement, and one that could be expected from her personal attache. No one would necessarily suspect it was her boyfriend telling this clown to stop hitting on her in front of him.

The Starving Prince of Lucis
Ship: platonic gladnoct, platonic ignoct
Rating: G
Words:1860
They really don’t feed people enough at these fancy events. Check the reblogs for the AO3 link.
It was thirty minutes until midnight at Boomerang’s Diner in upper Insomnia. Seventeen year old Myra’s twelve hour waitressing shift was almost over and her feet hurt. It had been a good tip day, though, so she could not complain much.
She had just finished clearing what she guessed would be her last table of the night; it was usually pretty slow after 10:30, maybe a few drunk stragglers here and there. Suddenly the door slammed open and the bells clattered and jingled against the glass. Myra looked up from refilling the salt shaker expecting to see such a straggler, but instead she had to do a double take at what she DID see. In the doorway of the hole-in-the-wall diner stood the very image of elegance. A young man, not much older than herself, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit with a silver sash and bowtie. She thought she recognized him, and the more she looked at him, the more she was certain that she would be a fool NOT to recognize him. Standing six feet away from her was the Crown Prince of Lucis, Noctis Lucis Caelum himself. He looked directly at the young waitress with…was that panic she saw?
“Please tell me you’re sill open!”
“Um,” she blinked rapidly and stood straight, smoothing out her coffee-stained apron. “Yes, Your Highness. We’re open 24-7.”
The prince gracelessly flopped into the nearest booth and sighed. “Thank the Six.”
Myra, still dumbfounded, produced her pen and guest check notpad from her apron pocket. “What can I get you to drink this evening?”
She watched the prince rub his temples, eyes closed and frowning. “Can I get, like, an entire pitcher of soda?”
Myra raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, sure,” having forgotten for a moment who she was speaking to, she corrected herself quickly. “I mean, of course, Your High-”
“Stop!” the out-of-place royal interrupted. “Stop it with all the Your Higness-ing. Do you have any idea what I’ve already had to put up with tonight?”
Myra shook her head wordlessly.
Noctis laughed humorlessly. “Well…”
Noctis paced up and down the tables of food, or at least what the Master of Ceremonies thought nobility thought considered food, grimacing at every hors d'oeuvre he came across.
They all had either unpronounceable (and equally inedible) vegetables, clumps of fish eggs, or both. Noctis groaned as his stomach growled for the fourth time in an hour. He was starving and this was not food.
Luckily, a familiar voice came to distract him from the hideous display.
“Enjoying the party, Your Highness?”
Noctis turned around to see Ignis approaching, carrying two glasses of wine. The adviser offered one to Noctis, who took it politely but had exactly -73% intentions of actually drinking it.
“Not particularly,” Noctis answered. “What is all this stuff anyway?” he asked, gesturing to the spread of not-food behind him.
Ignis withheld the urge to roll his eyes. “Those would be hors d'oeuvres traditional of Accordo, the country whose dignitaries we are honoring with these festivities. As prince, you really should familiarize yourself more with cultures and customs.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Noctis turned back to the table to make one last attempt to find something at least marginally palatable. He froze in horror when he noticed a trey of spiral shells with some sort of chunky green sauce in the opening.
“Ignis,” he said, pointing at the trey of…something, “Those. Are. SNAILS.”
“Ah, yes. That would be escargot.”
Noctis stepped back from the table, as if expecting the dead, sauce-drenched snails to leap off the table and attack him. “How about escarSTOP before I puke!”
Ignis really did roll his eyes this time. “Noctis, someday you’ll have to learn to at least stomach some of these food items. When you’re king-”
“No, when I’m king, I’m going to serve pizza. Pizza and beer, not,” he shook his head and set his glass of wine down on the table, “not snails and wine.”
“Noctis, you can’t-”
“If it crawled out from under a rock, I’m not eating it. If some chick’s feet have been in it, I’m not drinking it.”
“That isn’t how they press wine anymore and you know it!” Ignis argued, becoming irritated at his prince’s apparent lack of “culture.”
“I don’t care!” Noctis shouted, drawing the attention of several nearby guests, and walked off.
“Noctis,” Ignis called after him, “Where are you going?”
“To find food!”
By this point in the prince’s story, Myra had seated herself in the seat opposite Noctis in the booth. She laughed at his description of how he ditched his adviser.
“So, what then?” Myra asked. “You just left the party?”
“Took me half an hour to get out of there after I left Ignis,” he answered. “People I can’t stand kept coming up to me, all ‘good evening Your Highness’ and ‘spectacular party, wouldn’t you say, Your Highness’ or ‘Your, Highness, may I ask your opinion on blah blah blah’ I’m so passed done with it.”
“And so passed starving,” Myra added. “So what kind of food do you want? I promise snails are NOT on our menu.”
“That’s a relief. Tell you what, just bring me the biggest, greasiest, cheesiest heart attack between two buns that you can make. And a big pile of fries. No veggies on that burger. None. Like, don’t even let it touch a pickle.”
Myra nodded. “I’ve got you, Noctis.” she got up and left the table, disappearing behind a partition and returning with a pitcher of soda and a straw, which she set down in front of Noctis before taking a seat again. “We have a spacial here: the Boomerang Behemoth. It doesn’t come with veggies and if you can eat the entire thing, it’s free and you get a tshirt. Tanner’s cooking it up right now.”
Noctis grinned and took a drink of soda straight from the pitcher. “That’s what I’m talking about.”
“So while we wait, I’d like to here more about this Ignis character.”
“Well, I couldn’t ask for a better adviser. He IS quite the character though…”
Twenty minutes later, it took Tanner (the cook) and Elli (the waitress who came in at midnight to take over for Myra) to safely carry the trey. The burger was easily bigger than Noctis’ head, with a side of fries just as huge. Noctis stared with an awestruck smile as they set the trey gently on the table.
“You guys don’t fool around, do you?” Noctis said, a bit breathless. “Now THAT’S food!”
Tanner and Elli stepped back from the table and bowed, an overexaggerated gesture that was meant to be comical. “This, Your Highness, is the Boomerang Behemoth,” Tanner announced. “Two and a half pounds of meat and a third pound of cheese on a sesame seed bun, one pound of fries, seasoned to perfection with our special seasoning. Few have dared to take the challenge head on, and few who do succeed. But I’m sure it should be no challenge at all for our future king, right?”
“How to I bite it?” Noctis asked, still unable to stop staring at the enormous burger.
“Allow me,” Tanner said and produced a large kitchen knife from seemingly nowhere.
“Where were you hiding that!?” Noctis exclaimed. Tanner laughed and cut the burger into forths. “If you were an assassin and not a short order cook, I’d be in trouble.”
“The only thing killing you tonight is a heart attack from that burger,” Myra said, “so you best enjoy it. I better be heading home. Bring your adviser by some time, I’d like to meet him.”
“Yeah, sure thing.” Noctis assessed on of the burger quarters and carefully picked one up. It took some twisting, tilting, and almost dislocating his jaw, but he managed to figure out how to get his mouth around enough of the massive burger to take a big, cheesy, greasy bite.
And. It. Was. Heaven.
Almost half an hour and half the burger later, the door to the diner slammed open for the second time that night.
Noctis turned casually out of curiosity…
And died a little inside.
“Damn,’ he mumbled under his breath.
There in the doorway stood Gladio, phone in hand, looking at Noctis like the prince had just cursed the Amicitia name.
“Noctis what the HELL! I had to track your damn phone to find you!”
“Don’t start this, Gladio. In my position you would have done the same thing.”
“No, in your position I would have schmoozed up the some dignitaries and, I don’t know, THE NEWLY ELECTED FIRST SECRETARY OF ACCORDO and made connections that might come in handy in the future instead of RUDELY disappearing!”
Noctis shrugged and shoved three fries in his mouth at once. “I can’t politic on an empty stomach, Gladio,” he said with his mouth full.
Gladio growled and sat down in the booth opposite Noctis. “When are you going to learn your place in this world, Noct.” He absentmindedly reached for a fry on Noctis’ play, which resulted in Noctis slapping his hand away. Gladio looked wordlessly at Noctis with angered confusion.
“I have to eat this whole thing myself to get the tshirt. Order your own, and I’m not paying for you.”
“Tshirt? You better not have ditched a party your own kingdom was hosting in honor of the first female Accordian First Secretary for a tshirt.”
Noctis shook his head. “I ditched a party my own kingdom was hosting in honor of the first female Accordian First Secretary for a BURGER. Tshirt’s just a perk.”
Gladio shook his head and mumbled some sort of expletive. “You know, the only reason I’m not dragging you out of this diner, beating your bratty ass and hauling you back to the citadel over my shoulder is I know that food was nasty.”
“I know, right?” Noctis said around another bite of burger.
Gladio sighed and motioned to Elli to come over.
“Can I help you, sir?”
Gladio looked at Elli and pointed to Noctis’ plate. “Can I get one of those?”
The next morning, a photograph of the Crown Prince and his body guard exiting a diner dressed in ketchup-stained royal attire covered the front of the Crown City Times. The King was not pleased.
Also the next morning, Noctis and Gladio proudly sported their matching (pink) Boomerang’s Diner tshirts around the citadel. No one but them would admit to being amused, but the diner did have a seemingly random spike in business.
Myra was able to use the tip she received that night to replace the cracked windshield on her car, Elli used hers to but new cloths for her ten year old son, and Tanner bought an engagement ring for his girlfriend of two years. She said yes.
Noctis took Ignis to Boomerang’s one day to meet Myra. She was instantly smitten and slipped him her phone number with the check. She was slightly (extremely) disappointed (heartbroken) when he text messaged once, saying that she was a lovely young lady but, flattered as he was, she was too young for him and he was not interested in pursuing a relationship.

When heading to another country, do you study their laws or culture practices so you don't offend the people of the country?

“As best as I can, good stranger. Be it bowing or shaking hands, maintaining or refraining from eye contact, table etiquette, posture, or tone of voice, I do my part to represent Ylisse as politely as I can. From time to time, I’ll offer a lesson or two of what I’ve learned to Lord Chrom when he’s to treat with a foreign dignitary or some leader from another country, but milord tends to learn as he goes. Something about bonds and friendship and the like... *sigh* I fear he’s always been like this.”

“In any event, I find most cultural customs and greetings quite straightforward... with the Feroxi ‘chest bump’ being the obvious exception. *sigh* Only a nation descended from barbarian warriors would it be appropriate to launch oneself chest-first into another person as a way of saying ‘hello’.”

Fabric of society
Tumblr media
Words Emma Finamore; Photo Marcos Avlonitis
The bold, bright colours and beautiful, intricate batik patterns of wax print can be seen all over London, but they’re a visual symbol of somewhere else: Africa. From village to cotton field, from mill to market, a new film traces the story of how this fabric came to epitomise a whole continent – and it goes to some surprising places.
Peckham based composer Aiwan Obinyan, has just released ‘Wax Print’ – a documentary exploring this extraordinary material's relationship to Africa and its people, as well its journey. She wrote the film – as well as directing it, producing it, and even composing its soundtrack – after bering inspired by something her Nigerian grandmother said.
"I grew up with the prints,” she explains. “But when I heard my grandma call it 'Hollandaise'...and I was like, how is it Hollandaise? What does that mean? I noted it and got on with my life but then later I started making clothes and wanted to use that fabric, and thought it would be nice to show my customers where the fabric comes from and a bit of the history, and I thought it as going to be simple...but the more questions I asked the it just took me from one country to another, to different periods of time. For two years I traced the story." This took her and her camera to Ghana, Nigeria, the Netherlands, even to Manchester: "Wax print was made in Manchester for over 100 years, at ABC Wax, from 1908".
That’s because, despite being seen very much as ‘African’ fabric, wax print’s story is one of colonisation, international trade (including the slave trade) and industrialisation, across multiple nations, continents and cultures. During the Dutch colonisation of Indonesia in the 1800s, Dutch merchants and administrators became familiar with the nation’s batik technique. “They took it from Indonesia and figured if they could mechanise it, they could sell loads of it. It was originally a handmade print," explains Aiwan. The owners of textile factories in the Netherlands started developing machine printing processes which could imitate batik, hoping that the far cheaper machine-made imitations could outcompete the original batiks in the Indonesian market: creating the look of batik without the labour-intensive work required to make the real thing.
West Africans recruited between 1831 and 1872 from the Dutch Gold Coast to serve in the Dutch colonizing army in Indonesia would have seen these prints, and when retiring to Elmina, in modern Ghana, they may have provided an early market for the imitation batik. That’s one theory, but what we do know is that demand for the fabric grew in African ports and throughout West Africa, prompting Scottish, English, and Swiss manufacturers to follow the Dutch in producing and selling wax print.
The material quickly became a part of African apparel, and of society: women used the fabrics as a method of communication and expression, with certain patterns being used as a shared language, with widely understood meanings. It was soon also used for formal wear by leaders, diplomats, and the wealthy population.
Aiwan’s telling of this tale begins with her own story and relationship with the material. "Growing up in south east London, being bullied for being African - it wasn't cool to be African in the ‘90s - and wanting to hide my identity as much as possible,” she says. “And one of the most immediate, physical symbols of Africa is wax print. So you kind of wanted to push it to one side, and not be associated with it."
This has changed though, for her and many other people with African heritage – it’s now something to wear with pride. “I think it's being reclaimed by black people worldwide - in the diaspora and on the continent. It's being reinterpreted in terms of design, and it's being reclaimed as a symbol of Africa and African-ness. And something to be proud of."
Aiwan talks about how this resurgence means you can now get wax print earrings, glasses frames....pretty much anything you want. Part of the documentary is actually filmed at the Hub and Culture shop in Peckham, where customers can pick up everything from shoes, kimonos and capes, to handbags and head wraps – all in wax print, in every colour of the rainbow. Sales figures demonstrate the popularity of these products too. In Sub-Saharan Africa, wax print boasts an annual sales volume of 2.1 billion yards, with an average production cost of $2.6 billion and retail value of $4 billion. Ghana, to take one example, has an annual consumption of textiles about 130 million yards.
But it’s more than just a product to be bought and sold. "The film is kind of like the fabric,” explains Aiwan. “It's woven, it's many stranded. But the bottom line is about identity. It's definitely a statement. When someone's wearing wax print they're wearing it with intention. It's a statement: ' 'This is who I am.' The fact of the matter is that wax print is bold and vibrant and colourful, it stands out. So when you're wearing it - it's a statement."
These statements extend to places as well as people, as Aiwan discovered on her explorative journey. "So for instance in Congo their colourways are very bright, almost fluorescent pinks and yellows,” she says. “Whereas if you go over to Ghana the prints are a bit more muted, more burgundies and olive greens. And in Nigeria the prints are more strong yellows, strong oranges, really intense blues. And within Nigeria there are different colour ways for different parts of the country. So the colour way for Ibos over in the East is that blue with the orange, whereas the colour way for Yoruba would be different."
Another part of the wax print story that Aiwan unearthed was especially exciting: about a group of pioneering, formidable women called the ‘Nana Benz’, who played a key, pivotal role in the development of the wax print industry, operating during the 1930s to 1970s. "They were very, very powerful women who became millionaires during their time through trading in wax print - they were the gatekeepers,” explains Aiwan. “If they said it wouldn't sell, it wouldn’t sell. They were in touch with the local women so they knew what they liked, and they fed that back to the European merchants, who then made the cloth according to those specifications. They had economic power, political power, social power...they were so wealthy that they owned luxury cars like the Mercedes Benz - hence the name, Nana Benz. They owned so many of these cars that the government at the time, if they ran out of cars for local dignitaries, they would borrow cars from the Nana Benz.
“For me it was the most surprising thing [about making the film] - was the story of the Nana Benz, because I didn’t know it. I first got introduced to it at the Vlisco wax print factory  [in Helmond, the Netherlands] and there was a picture there of an old African woman, and I asked somebody who it was and she said, 'That's a Nana Benz' - and she explained briefly who she was. And at first I thought it was specifically who she was - I thought Nana Benz was a single person, Then I did more research and realised it was this group of powerful women."
Aiwan’s research saw her talking to professors, reading books, and then a bit closer to home: "Then I made the connection between the Nana Benz and my grandma." Her grandmother ran a sewing school and tailoring business in Ekpoma in Edo State, Nigeria – an entrepreneur who ended up supplying custom clothes to surrounding businesses. "There's a picture in the film of my grandma in the most amazing outfit,” Aiwan remembers, “standing next to a bright red BMW sports car....she was a Nana Benz!
“I'm glad I went on that journey, and that I was given the honour and the privilege to be able to tell that story. I'm really glad that the stories of the women have been re-centred, and the story of wax print has been re-centred. Very often when people write about wax print it's almost anthropological, sort of analytical and academic. So I was happy to re-centre the story of the Nana Benz's and people like my grandma - without them you wouldn’t have wax print, that's the bottom line, there is no wax print. It became what it was because of them, and their collaboration with missionaries and traders."
This big story calls for a big audience, and this month Aiwan is taking her film on the road. Wax Print has been accepted into the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, so Aiwan will be out there in February, then there’s an event with artist Yinka Shonibare MBE (whose work exploring cultural identity, colonialism and post-colonialism often features brightly coloured wax print) in Exeter, as well as at a wax print factory in the Netherlands, and screenings in Japan and Ghana  - poignantly on Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, a celebration of the abolition of slavery in Texas and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. "In the film I talk about how slavery was a big factor in wax print,” says Aiwan, “so it'll be nice to celebrate the abolition of slavery in Ghana where slaves were taken, while showing a film which is about our identity as a people."
If that wasn’t enough hard work, she’s just finished working on a play at the Young Vic Theatre – doing the sound for The Convert, a play written by Black Panther star Danai Gurira – and is currently working on a feature film in Nigeria called 'Nigeriana', following a young man’s struggle to engage in politics despite a corrupt system.
Like these projects, Wax Print is powered by Aiwan’s clear passion for storytelling, especially a tale that’s close to her heart. "It's hard work but I think it would be harder if it wasn't something I care about,” she explains. “I think it's important to work on things you truly believe in."

Totally-canon-non-essential-one-shot ft. Bradley x Guinevere
I’ve been impressively non-productive lately. Done very little writing or work. And I bought a new notebook at Target’s back-to-school section, so I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just a totally useless purchase.
So have a mostly un-edited, totally-canon-non-essential-one-shot featuring our favorite qpr marriage, Bradley x Guinevere.
He found Guinevere in the gardens.
It was where they’d gone during that first week, when they’d first been getting to know one another. He hadn’t known what to expect in those early days. The Paragon of Imivaria hadbeen a mysterious figure at the time, a foreign political dignitary who he’d never met, but whom he was still expected to marry. It had been hard, meeting her for the first time and knowing that the shadow of their engagement was lurking in both of their minds.
That hadn’t been the only thing lurking, either. An escort was a must during those early days, most notably the Paragon’s guard, Falmere. The flowers had been a decent distraction from the awkwardness of their first meeting, and he’d known he would find her in the gardens again today. She had an uncommon love of the gardens; she liked to spend time among the blossoms that couldn’t grow in her home country.
Bradley found Guinevere perched on a bench and thoroughly absorbed in a heavy tome. Falmere stood in his customary place, just behind the Paragon. He caught Bradley’s eye, offering the tiniest nod of his head in acknowledgement of his presence. No unnecessary bowing and scraping from this man, and Bradley preferred it that way. It saved time.
Clearing his throat, he stopped just before her and waited. Guinevere didn’t even acknowledge him until she had reached a point in her book where she could stop. Then she rested a hand on the page and looked up at him, a smile playing about her lips. Once he had her attention, he had all of it, and he suddenly found himself shaking. His throat had gone dry. He cleared it again, trying to remember even the tiniest piece of the eloquent speech he’d rehearsed over and over in his head. It had all disappeared in the brilliance of her smile.
“Bradley.” She tipped her head at him, both eyebrows coming up in question. “How kind of you to join me! Have you come to read to me again?” Her eyes twinkled at him, but all he could see was the glint of the piercing in her bottom lip.
“Ah, no.” His words came out rough, and he cleared his throat again, feeling like he’d swallowed a frog. His words had never failed him before now. He was a Prince, expected to speak publically, to stand before crowds and always have the right words to say.
But Guinevere was staring at him, and her guard behind her, and he couldn’t find his words.
He was just glad they were alone, only the three of them present to witness his fumbling. “I have something of great important to discuss with you.” He finally manage to make something approximating comprehensive words. “If now is a good time for you, of course.”
Falmere made a choking sound that might have been him smothering a laugh. Shooting a quick glance his in direction, Bradley was just in time to catch the guard passing his hand over his mouth. He couldn’t be sure, but he thought he saw amusement in Falmere’s face. He quickly glanced away again, but not before Falmere had quirked one eyebrow at him.
When he looked back into Guinevere’s face, he saw only casual interest. His heart plummeted.
“Of course. What is it?”
Now the words were coming. The speech he’d prepared was coming back to him, rushing back into his brain like it was being chased by wolves. “When I first learned of the alliance my father intended for my country and yours, I began researching at once. I knew of Imivaria from my lessons as a boy, of course, but I wished to learn as much as possible about the country we would be joining with before I met the foreign dignitary.” Now that he’d started speaking, the words came more easily.
He approached her now, sinking down onto the bench beside her. She made no objection, turning to face him more fully.
Pausing to collect his thoughts, he stared down into his hands. “What I learned,” he continued. “is that Imivaria is a country of beauty and culture. I also, as time passed, realized what sort of union between our countries my father intended.” A chuckle forced its way out of him, more from nerves than actual mirth. He still remembered the pile of rocks that had settled into his stomach when he’d first learned he was to marry the Paragon. That sick heaviness had settled deep inside him, remaining until this very moment, as he sat near enough to Guinevere to feel the warmth of her thigh against his.
Guinevere looked at him with a look he’d begun to associate with her grave moods. It was the look she’d worn when they’d first met, her eyebrows drawn down a fraction of an inch and her eyes intentionally blank. He could only meet that look for a moment before he looked away, glancing at Falmere long enough to spot his twitching frown before he had to look into his hands again.
“I’m sure you had similar fears about our union.” He wet his lips, looking into her face again. “The thought of marrying a stranger, well. . . it could only be an unpleasant and frightening thought, couldn’t it?”
“My father insisted I would be happy in Bedor.” She replied, breaking her lengthy silence. “He also assured me I would grow to love my young, handsome Bedorian Prince.” Her mouth twisted into a smile.
Bradley’s face heated, uncomfortable warmth prickling up his neck and into his cheeks. He couldn’t help the chuckle that came. “My parents told me the same. But I worried, and in my worry I studied. I thought, after all my research, I was prepared to meet the Paragon.” He took a deep breath, bracing himself. “I was mistaken.”
Falmere was definitely choking back laughter now, his shoulders shaking. Neither Bradley nor Guinevere looked at him, maintaining eye contact. Bradley reached out to take her hands, closing the tiny distance that remained between them.
“In my research, I learned that all Imivarian citizens are taught the art of combat, down to the smallest girl. Out of this interest in personal safety, a custom was born that I found to be completely strange to me.” He reached into his tunic, grasping for the knife where it had been resting, cold and unforgiving, against his skin for the better part of an hour. He saw Falmere flinch as he pulled the knife free, but Guinevere raised a hand and he stilled at once. She never took her eyes from Bradley’s face as he slowly stood and then took a knee before her.
She made a noise like she’d sucked in a sudden breath but said nothing. For that, Bradley was glad. He didn’t think he’d have the courage to keep on if she’d had much to say.
“I know neither of us were really expecting this. Not . . .” he couldn’t help a laugh. “Not that we weren’t expecting to have to marry for politics. But I’m sure some part of you never expected that you would be obliged to move to a new country and marry a man who’d never met.” And truthfully, Bradley had never had that fear, of being shipped off to a strange man and forced to marry. His only option had been to wait and see who his father would choose for his bride. He had to admit, as much as it shamed him, that as a younger man, his only fear had been of not liking his bride-to-be. That she would be old, or ugly, or vapid. Now, as he looked up at Guinevere from where he knelt in front of her, he realized how horrid those early thoughts had been.
And how fortunate he was that Guinevere was as kind and intelligent as she was beautiful.
Realizing he’d been staring, he offered the knife, in its soft leather sheath, to her. “I cannot express how glad I am to have met you. I don’t expect that you’ll love me right away, nor do I make this proposal out of love or romance. But I have grown fond of you in the short time since you traveled here, and I hope that we can learn to rule together. You have proven yourself to be kind, and generous with your kindness, and I would count myself very lucky, indeed, if you would consent to be my wife.”
There was something strange in Guinevere’s face, an expression he couldn’t make sense of. It was not quite surprise, nor disgust, nor happiness. Instead, as he saw her blink, chewing the stud in her bottom lip, he thought it might be sorrow.
She reached for the knife nonetheless, plucking it from his open palm and pulling it from its sheath. The blade glimmered in the sunlight, and she gasped. Pride surged in Bradley’s hest. He had commissioned the knife when he’d first learned of the Imivarian tradition, and the royal smith had outdone himself. The knife was elegant, the blade shimmering with a rainbow of colors that Bradley couldn’t begin to understand the process of making. The handle had been inlaid with a single crystal, the stone glowing with the same iridescent rainbow as the blade.
Guinevere’s voice croaked. “I never--” she paused long enough to clear her throat and tried again. “I never imagined I would find myself in this situation. I came to Bedor expecting to marry a stranger, resigned to it, you could say. But this. . .” The blade glistened as she turned it, admiring thep lay of light across its length. “You have surprised me with this.”
Bradley smiled, relief hitting him harder than he’d expected it to. Behind Guinevere, he could see Falmere’s face, staring and pale. He tried not to look, tried to focus on Guinevere and her smiling face, but he could still feel the guard’s stare, burning into his skin.
He shifted his eyes back to Guinevere’s face as she covered the knife again and reached for his hand. A smile had creased her previously somber expression. She squeezed his hand in hers, tilting her head slightly.
“I will consent to this marriage,” her voice had a hint of pomp, of the sort of airs this occasion might usually require. It dropped away as she went on, leaving a pit in Bradley’s stomach. “But I will need you to understand something, first.”
“If we’re to marry, we’ll be sharing a great many things.” He hadn’t considered that at any length, yet. Sudden nerves dampened his palms; he wondered if she could tell. “Please, tell me, and I will do my best to understand.”
Guinevere took a deep breath, her eyes closing briefly as though she were preparing for something difficult. Bradley mirrored the movement without meaning to, sucking in a deep breath. When Guinevere spoke, she did so all in a rush.
“I may never grow to love you.” She blinked, almost looking startled. “I don’t want you to believe that this is some comment on you! I mean that I do not--I simply have no interest in romance. At least, I haven’t yet, and I don’t wish to mislead you.” She fell quiet all at once, staring down at their hands, still intertwined between them.
In the silence that fell, Bradley sucked in another deep breath. Her words rang through him, meandering through his brain. No interest in romance? Did that make her unable to love? Could he survive a marriage that would never include that aspect? He let his gaze track to Falmere, remembering when he had said something similar: that Guinevere would never love him. Just now, that guard looked back at him with one eyebrow raised. It was a look of superiority. Of knowledge. It was a look that said “Didn’t I tell you?”
And here was proof, and a puzzling piece of knowledge.
Bradley frowned, almost afraid to consider how her guard might be privy to this particular piece of intimate knowledge about the Paragon.
Nonetheless. . .
Guinevere was watching him, he saw as he looked at her again. It proved difficult to tear his eyes from Falmere’s face, but he accomplished it all the same.
“I understand,” she ventured, hesitant. “if that changes things. But I, too, believe that we could make a formidable couple. And the peace between our countries depends on an amicable union.”
Understanding came, and Bradley squeezed her hand, finishing the thought. “Perhaps an amicable match is our best option.”
They stared at one another, neither breaking the stillness. Bradley remained uncomfortably aware of Falmere’s closeness. Having him so near during what ought to have been an intimate moment left him feeling flushed. Nervous. His own guards had stayed at the entrance to the gardens. He shuddered at the thought of always having them directly beside him.
Finally, Guinevere stirred. She blinked, breathed in a long breath like she was coming out of a doze. Then she smiled, sheepish. “I suppose it’s time to give you something in return.”
Curiosity welled, and Bradley watched as Guinevere pulled a soft pouch from the waistband of her saree. The garment had no pockets, but she made do. As he watched, she tilted the bag. A glittering object fell into her palm, and Bradley was suddenly laughing.
“Bedor has its own marriage traditions.” She laughed with him, and he thought he saw the hint of a blush in her cheeks. “I had this made by your own smith not more than a week ago.”
As she held up the ring, Bradley couldn’t stop laughing. Then she was laughing, too, and she offered the ring to him. It was a solid thing, a thick band of white gold, unadorned except for the elegant designs burnished into the metal. It slipped onto his finger easily. He was still laughing when he realized Guinevere had joined him on the ground, slipping down from the bench to kneel with him.
While he wiped moisture from his eyes, his lungs still spasming with mirth, Guinevere cupped his face with her hands. “I hope,” she said, gazing into his eyes. “that our match will amount to more than two amicable strangers who occasionally cross paths.”
Before he could respond, she leaned in and pressed her mouth to his.
After that, he wouldn’t have had breath to respond if he’d wanted to.

Shadowhunters recap - s2ep19 “Hail and Farewell”
SHADOWHUNTERS Recaps Intro and Masterlist
These recaps may contain spoilers from the books (that may or may not happen in the show.) Proceed at your own risk.
Recap and meta under the cut.
Tumblr media
I thought this was a really great way to lead into the episode. Throughout the season, we’ve seen this steady progression of Sebastian unraveling (yes, I know he’s actually Jonathan, but in the books he adopts the Sebastian identity For Reasons and others have a hard time thinking of him as anything else For Reasons, so we’re going with that.) His plans have been thwarted at every turn, with the possible exception of getting Valentine away from Clave custody, and that didn’t turn out the way he intended either.
In fact, it’s only gotten worse since he decided not to banish Valentine to Edom after all, because now Valentine is getting in his head all the time, chipping away at whatever is left of his sanity, preying on his need for approbation, manipulating him into playing by Valentine’s rules.
It makes you wonder what his plans were for AFTER he banished Valentine to Edom. What was his next step if he’d followed through there? Did he intend to just settle into an “ordinary” Shadowhunter life as Sebastian Verlac and hope he was never found out?
Tumblr media
Clary claiming she knew something was off about Sebastian—since when? Since she pretty much started confiding in him the instant he showed up at the Institute? Other than being put off by his romantic attentions, what indication did she ever give that she didn’t think he was A-OK?
Still LOVE seeing badass Izzy back in the field.
The dialogue about the “possessing” demon (like, is that the name of the subspecies? Because it’s spoken as if it’s the name and yet it’s more of a description) like the one that killed Jocelyn was a little clunky (like, when were we ever given an indication that the one that killed Jocelyn could take control of dead bodies?) But it did serve its purpose in establishing that Valentine can still control demons with the Mortal Cup. Which we the viewers already knew, but apparently the characters needed it confirmed somehow?
I did hate seeing that final indignity visited upon poor Sebastian Verlac, though. He didn’t deserve that.
Tumblr media
I thought this shot of Izzy and Clary responding with “hail and farewell” was interesting because of the difference in their faces. Clary recites the words, but Izzy closes hers, and her face is much more intent.
It reminded me a lot of the times that I, as a person who isn’t Catholic, have attended mass with Catholic friends.
It says a lot about the disparity in their upbringing. They’re both Shadowhunters, yes, but for Clary, being raised as a mundane, this is a foreign custom that she participates in out of politeness. She’s trying to adopt it but she doesn’t really feel it. Izzy, however, is legitimately devout. This is part of her cultural identity, and these words, this rite, is sacred to her.
Which makes the utter scorn with which she uses them at the end of the episode all that much more powerful.
Tumblr media
I literally spent this entire scene moaning “nooo, don’t tell anyone about the Mirror!” but of course they do. Which I kinda-sorta get because of course they need to get guards on the lake, but surely they should know by now that the Clave has more leaks than a sieve? Not to pat myself on the back, but I think the suggestion Maryse made in the short fic I posted last week, of notifying the werewolf packs in Idris and convincing them to patrol the lake, was far more sensible.
Admittedly, that could be because I’ve read the synopsis for s2ep20 and know there’s a traitor somewhere.
This scene is meant to give us the impression that Imogen might be that traitor, I suspect, but I’m 99% certain that’s a red herring. First of all, there’s simply no way she’s going to work with Valentine. She truly and sincerely despises him. Second, one of Jace’s family members turns out to be a traitor? Haven’t we already gone to this well a few too many times?
I actually suspect Imogen might die next week, though, because Inquistor Herondale in the books was long dead by this point (she dies immediately after realizing Jace is her grandson) and during the sequence of events in the books that the show is presently modeling itself after, Inquisitor Aldertree (who had taken her place) is killed by Valentine. Let’s hope Imogen’s death isn’t a gruesome as that one was.
So, Imogen here says “I’ll speak to Consul Malachi.” Let’s get into that, shall we?
The anti-Downworld/Nephilim-supremacist rant voiceover in the promo for next week’s episode is, in fact, Malachi Dieudonné. I didn’t originally recognize him as a character from the books because Izzy refers to him in s2ep15 ‘Councillor Dieudonné’ (closed captioning says ‘Consul Dieudonné’ but it sounded like ‘Councillor’ when I watched it) and in the books he’s called Consul Malachi. So Imogen referring to him as Consul Malachi here is the first time I put it together.
In the books, yes, Malachi is a traitor, and clearly he is going to be on the show as well. But on the show, we have literally ZERO investment in this character. Until now, he’s had two lines and, like, three seconds of screen time. So I don’t see what payoff there is, on a storytelling level, to making him the traitor—or at least the only one. Also, they’ve already given Malachi away in both the promo for the next episode and the promo stills they released. So I suspect this is a diversion to keep us from suspecting another traitor, one who will be more of a surprise.
My money is still on Robert.
Tumblr media
I really love Luke sort of calling Magnus out here and Magnus replying. I wish Luke hadn’t backed down.
I especially love the look Raphael shot Luke when Luke invoked Alec’s name. Like, “Wow, really? You’re going there?”
I feel for Magnus, and yet I’m really glad to see the Downworlders prioritizing the Downworld over the Shadowhunters right now. Despite their misgivings and personal stakes in all this, even Luke and Raphael have their priorities in the right place here.
Tumblr media
Can someone please give me one single rational reason why Clary and Jace are in this meeting?
Izzy I can see. She’s sort of functioned as Alec’s co-host/goodwill ambassador for previous Downworld cabinet meetings. But Jace and Clary serve absolutely no function in this meeting, and Clary specifically has been in the shadow world less than two months so what the hell is she doing attending high-level political meetings, sassing off to foreign dignitaries for no other reason than she’s still sulky over what happened the last time she saw the Seelie Queen?
A lot of people see Magnus’s expressions in this scene as being derision aimed at Alec, but I don’t agree. I think they’re irritation over the fact that he can’t respond when he wants to, as he’s clearly been ordered not to speak. “Such is the nature of our agreement.” He has to let the Seelie Queen do all the talking. Raphael and Luke are clearly under the same condition.
His behavior in this scene isn’t him being salty at Alec. It’s him being uncomfortable and frustrated with the position he’s been forced into. It’s meant to show us that he’s not sanguine about this new state of affairs in the slightest.
ETA: I take this back. Given the sneak peek of s2ep20, clearly he really is still salty at Alec. Which is sort of giving me whiplash because he wasn’t angry any longer at the end of s2ep18, just sad. So why is he back to that angry place now? I don’t get it.
Don’t get me started on the fact that, after watching Alec go through this, Clary and Jace look at each other, rather than Alec who must be suffering under what is happening.
Don’t get me started on the fact that we haven’t seen Jace express a single word of concern about anything having to do with Alec since season 2B began. Apparently their renewed connection from season 2A is gone and we’re back to Jace being about himself and his drama all the time and taking Alec for granted.
Tumblr media
I really did like this moment between Clary and Luke. Because it demonstrated two things. 1) that they still love each other and 2) that Luke is no longer letting his love for Clary drive him to neglect his pack. And Clary…actually understands that. Respects it. Who is this new Clary who recognizes the bigger picture (at least some of the time?)
What’s interesting, though, is that despite the Seelie Queen giving the Shadowhunters a definitive “no” on their request to help hunt for Valentine, Luke and Raphael leave the meeting clearly intending to do exactly that. And the Seelie Queen orders the warlocks to put up wards around the City. So…what exactly did her refusal in the council meeting accomplish?
“We’re going to do exactly what you’re asking us to do, but we’re not going to help you do it or work with you in doing it.” I’m not sure I understand what the point of that is, except to establish a new power dynamic and antagonize the Clave.
Tumblr media
Can we take a moment to admire the staging of this shot with Izzy and Raphael? Her standing in the sunlight, him carefully in the shadows. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; I’m firmly pro-Rizzy, as long as the toxic mutual-addiction thing isn’t an element. I like this ship. I know it’s not endgame, but as long as they’re both dealt with respectfully at the end of it, I can get behind it.
But if this shot isn’t a metaphor for the issues they face if they go there, I don’t know what is.
Tumblr media
Simon and Maia are so adorable. I just wish I knew how the producers plan on wrapping up their romance plotline without (just like Izzy and Raphael) treating one of them disrespectfully. Because I just don’t want to see that.
Maia eating off the plate going out to the customers just kills me. If only Ollie knew… But again, who are these people who operate and work at the Jade Wolf, that apparently all these werewolves going in and out of their kitchen getting into shit isn’t a big deal?
“I know that asking you for a favor right now might be a little awkward…” OMG what is this? Is Clary actually demonstrating…self-awareness? Really?
*sniffle* I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.
I adore Simon so much. There is just not a petty bone in his body, even when no one would blame him if there were.
What I would like to know is if Clary ran this plan to send Simon as an emissary to the Seelie Queen past Alec and got his okay with it. Because, like, maybe she should stay OUT of issues of shadow world diplomacy until someone tags her in on it?
Tumblr media
I can’t. I just can’t. This hurts too damn much. I need it to be Monday already and I need my boys to be all right. Sweartagod if they leave us this way over the hiatus I will…well, I don’t know what I’ll do, but I know that my enthusiasm for this episode was severely dampened by the Malec break-up and if they remain broken up over the hiatus, I will probably have a very hard time mustering enough enthusiasm to tune in for Season 3.
Look, I’m old. I’ve been battered and bruised and I’ve learned through many painful experiences that if the pain of rooting for your favorite characters and ships starts outweighing the enjoyment, it’s time to bail.
Madzie! Catarina! I love them both and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them more in Season 3. I was really hoping that Catarina would try to talk Magnus out of gambling on the Seelie Queen, but nope, she’s just that ride or die. No questions asked, she’s in.
“Thank you for coming.” Magnus thanks her! He doesn’t take for granted that she’ll just jump to. *heart eyes*
It’s interesting to me how Magnus tends to pull his face more, make more over-the-top facial expressions, when he’s not with Alec. This is much more the Magnus was saw in Season 1. Even here with Catarina, right now when everything is so raw, his walls are up and that’s one of the signs of it.
Tumblr media
I’m trying to decide whether or not I’m in favor of them making Sebastian so fixated on Valentine’s approval. It’s a bit woobie-fying, isn’t it? Like, are they saying that Sebastian could have been saved, if not for Valentine’s poisonous influence? Jocelyn didn’t seem to think so; she believed he was evil from birth. Are they trying to set up a redemption arc for him? Or merely foreshadowing what turns out to be his fatal weakness (letting Jace goad him about being the “favorite son” ultimately leads to his downfall.)
Tumblr media
Apropos of nothing, is it just me or does it look like that Circle member on the right might be pregnant? No real point to that, just sort of thinking of what it must be like to be a pregnant Shadowhunter, particularly in time of war. We know Maryse was in the Circle when she was pregnant with Alec (she’s lucky Valentine didn’t try any experiments on her) and was conducting raids with the Circle still when Alec was just a baby.
And Valentine wouldn’t scruple to use pregnant women as canon fodder, either, would he?
Tumblr media
They’ve done better with the Seelie ears this season than they did first season. I can still see a seam where the prosthetic is glued on, but it’s not nearly as messy as Meliorn’s were in season 1.
I do love that Simon gives so few fucks that he just sasses back to the Seelie Queen. Which I know is maybe a little hypocritical of me, since I was irritated that Clary was doing that earlier, but the difference is, Clary was in a diplomatic meeting and shouldn’t have been taking pot shots.
Tumblr media
This was a gorgeously filmed scene. I admit it, for someone who has been spectacularly unmoved by Clace overall, I was feeling it a bit here. Part of it may just be how beautifully it was shot, part of it may be because Clary hasn’t been irritating me nearly as much the past couple episodes, but I think what really got me was the embrace. Not a kiss, not passion, just…intimacy. Closeness. The protective way Jace was holding her and sense of safety and contentment Clary radiated in his arms. A respite in the middle of chaos. A moment when the world melts away. The need to wrap yourself around someone and just be pressed against them and just be in that moment.
That’s a very visceral thing and actually speaks to me a lot more than a kiss would have done.
Tumblr media
I almost asked who made the portal but then I remembered Clary’s rune.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Valentine make canon fodder out of innocents, but at least when he made Forsaken in season 1 he took volunteers (admittedly they were people who were sick and dying and didn’t have much choice.)
I and many others have already remarked on the way Jace assumes Alec would want to probe about his drama with Clary when he apparently hasn’t taken even a second to notice what Alec is going through. I don’t like these sorts of inconsistencies. Either they have this bond, and it goes both ways, or they don’t. Alec seems to be very consistently attentive to whatever Jace is going through, but Jace is hit-and-miss with Alec, and I really don’t want the writing to take them back to a place where Jace is taking Alec for granted the way they did in season 1.
I don’t have much to say about the ensuing fight sequences. Lots of Fighty McFight and Princess Stabbity stuff. They were amazing, ALL the characters got to have badass moments. And one lesson Valentine apparently taught Jace that he’s been playing close to the vest is the ability to talk his way inside someone’s head and manipulate them into playing by his rules.
I loved that Izzy got to confront Sebastian, though I do wish they’d kept the touch from the books where she amputated his hand with her whip. That would have been awesome, and sort of a parallel to Jace doing the same thing to Hodge after Hodge betrayed them at the end of Season 1 (though, maybe that’s why they didn’t go there again.)
Tumblr media
I will say, though, apparently Jace actually missed the spot where he could sever Sebastian’s spine, because otherwise Sebastian wouldn’t be able to stand upright here and grab him by the neck for their final tussle. His legs should have buckled the instant that sword went through him, if his spine was severed.
And, again, see the beginning of this write-up for why the disdain with which Izzy delivers the words “Hail and farewell” here is so amazing.
Tumblr media
I can’t even imagine what the Seelie Queen thinks she’s going to accomplish by kidnapping Maia. Clearly it has something to do with wanting Simon to capitulate, but how exactly?
And what could Valentine possibly be offering her here at the end?

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺!!!!!
During the time when she was Hokage, Toka would travel the countryside, stopping everywhere from big bustling cities to burned-out ruins of ravaged little villages, constantly keeping an eye out for promising young girls who were down on their luck but still had fire in their eyes.
Toka recruited prostitutes and other wayward women, victims of the civil wars of the Warring States period, orphan farm girls, young widows, dirt-poor street urchins, young girls who were either orphaned, lost or abandoned by their parents, and helped give them a new life full of prosperity by moving them into Konoha or smaller villages and cities around it. Some of these people, mostly women were offered positions as the new generation of kunoichi. Some even made it to the ANBU.
Toka did her best to help the children in her village and in orphanages outside it. She would often visit orphanages, giving donations and helping the children there, also singing to them since Toka had a talent for singing calming melodies. She often did this as a child to relax herself from the war that raged around her.
Toka awakens the Mokuton during her fight against Kinkaku and Ginkaku and slays them in battle, avenging Tobirama’s death. Her mastery of the Mokuton allows her to control and manipulate wood, trees, bark, grass, leaves, flowers, seeds, lichen, moss, fungi, vines, spores, pollen, fruits, berries chakra-eating plants and other things.
Senju Toka is the first female Kage in history, and therefore, she would promote the rights of women. During the Waring Era and the Founders Era, many women have been given too many rules to follow or risk losing her husband, family, children, because of certain regulations. In short, women of the past usually did not have much freedom, almost no voice in expressing themselves, very little education except with how to keep the household running or to please a potential suitor, and for some, martial arts, and no rights in deciding for their future in marriage. These customs changed during Toka’s reign. During feudal times, a woman has little, if not any say as to their marriage where it was arranged for them by their father, brothers and other male members of the family, and it was expected that the woman would obey all the rules set by the male members. The woman is only allowed to be wed once even if she outlived her husband’s life. The husband alternatively, can leave his wife if the wife is guilty with the seven sins of being jealous, barren, unfilial, lascivious, stealing, meddling, or subject to a disease. Women with a low familial and social status do not have much chance in place among the male dominance of society.
Senju Toka’s reign changed this and gave women the voices they deserved. Women had the same rights as the men and enjoyed the privilege of education, marriage choice, work and all other privileges excluded to men. They were also given a favorable law as to owning land, having the freedom to conduct business and other things that only their male counterparts could do in long times past.
Women of noble families, during Toka’s reign, were not subject to the marital restrictions or constraints much like the common people. In her law, a couple who wishes to divorce on the foundation of mutual approval and peaceful procedure were not punished. Her dynasty attached great value to education and the women were given much value on this as the men.
There were a lot of privileges women had during this dynasty and they were able to enjoy the freedom of their male counterparts. Marriage became an ideal and divorce was no longer shunned. Even the noble families enjoyed these privileges and granted the same rights that shook the foundations of traditional and feudal cultures as well as ethics. Women had the chance to learn politics, economics, history and military skills as well as participated in hunting, riding, sports, travelling or battles if that was what they chose to do. Female officials always participate in political events and give orders, playing a role that previously belonged to men, (with the occasional appearance of Toka, as she was one of the very few women who held the same respect as a man, and the only woman allowed to join and even voice out her opinion in the village assembly when not advising her cousins, a male-dominated affair during this time.)
Being given such freedom the women of the Sandaime’s reign could express themselves freely as well as carry themselves in society without much propriety. They conducted themselves in business, expressed themselves, even sung loudly, and drank to their heart’s content and other things that they couldn’t do centuries ago. The women could participate in any event they wanted, just like the men.
She’d also pass down a law that no slavery or servitude would exist in her village and in the surrounding areas. A lot of men became really irritated and even angered to see a woman on the throne, and tried to overthrow her. Toka responds by either imprisoning them after a trial when caught or straight out killing them, if they were going to try and seize it from her by assassination.
As Hokage of Fire Country, she was at the centre of a web of trade, wealth and political influence that shocked her nation. Before her reign, Konoha had been ruled by an aristocratic, elite Senju male - her two cousins before her - and so to overthrow this tradition, and survive in a man’s world, Toka had to break all the traditional rules.
She creates an embassy for the people who live in Fire Country but who aren’t exactly a part of Konoha, such as civilians or foreign dignitaries from other lands. The embassy is a massive and gorgeous building, once a hunting estate belonging to the Senju Ichizoku.
The Sandaime Hokage updates the Hokage Tower with the following: A fancy garden; The ANBU always check for ID’s, permission slips for those who’re not a part of the village, mission papers, and animal companions, people who fail to give ID’s are kept under custody of the Hokage until their respective Kage or leader produces the papers necessary to let them go.
Behind the Hokage Rock and Hokage Tower is an abandoned village that’s used by the ANBU. They use it for training purposes and war games. The Hokage Tower has a receptionist lobby. The tower now has different separate wings. There are two basements: one is a complex labyrinth which eventually leads to Konoha’s storage area and vault. The second (located at the very bottom) is a maximum security prison for missing ninja, enemy captive ninja, mass murderers, serial killers, etc. that’s under constant watch by ANBU and KMPF officers. No one has ever escaped. There’s another prison located in Konoha elsewhere, but it’s only for the petty thieves, kidnappers, bullies, etc.
Toka has her own laboratory and torture room in the Hokage Tower which can potentially lead to the I&T.
Toka commissioned a training area hidden within an ancient temple complex that was abandoned by monks after a devastating fire destroyed it. The Fire Daimyo gifted her with the reconstruction of it. when it was finally complete, Toka called it “The Golden Temple of Might”. Although already a splendid sight at any time of the day, it is the most beautiful during sunrise and sunset, when the entire building turns gold, giving it it’s name. Toka called upon the best masters of whichever jutsu style they mastered in that Fire Country had to offer, and they now live and train those whom wish to hone their skills as a shinobi. It’s very luxurious and a lot of people go in there. There are different training halls for each type of fighting style (ninjutsu, genjutsu, fuinjutsu, taijutsu, bukijutsu), and there’s a library and a foyer. There is also a hot springs located deep within temple, and not too far from it, there is a cold bath where people can cool off from intense training, as well as a courtyard.
Created a secret police force. She began a campaign to elevate the position and status of women, having famous scholars and poets write biographies of famous women. Toka states that the ideal ruler was the one who ruled like a mother bear with her cubs: protect and nourish, and should anyone get in her way, she will claw right through them. She did her best to find the best people she could to run the government, and treated those she trusted fairly. She was also fair to peasants or anyone who didn’t have very much by lowering taxes, raising agricultural production and strengthening public works and social services.
Close to the Golden Temple of Might, there’s the Konoha Research Facility, a huge facility of science and wisdom, also doubling as a animal sanctuary, a greenhouse, botanical gardens, and a library - all in one big package.
In honor of Hashirama and Tobirama, and the countless lives that have been taken by wars, Toka demanded that a memorial centre be built in the centre of the village called “The Obelisk of Tears”, as a reminder to the people on who fought for their freedom, as a reminder that they should always be remembered, and to be grateful for what one has.
Toka listens to the Uchiha’s protests after the First War is over, and therefore looks more after her village. She updates the KMPF  by opening it’s ranks not only to the Uchiha, but for other major clans like the Aburame, the Inuzuka, the Akimichi, the Nara, the Yamanaka, the Uzumaki, the Hyuga, etc. and even other civilians, if they’re strong enough.
The duties of the Police Force are limited to: Murder of one civilian by another, or murder of one shinobi by another, civilian and/or shinobi petty theft, arson, non-ninja and ninja spies, vandalism, greater acts of property damage, civilian and/or shinobi drug dealing, patrolling the village, riots, missing persons, civilian and/or shinobi hostage situations, civilian and/or shinobi kidnapping, civilian and/or shinobi assault, bribery, escorts, and the illegal transporting of stolen material. The new recruits of the Konoha Military Police Force will only deal with civilian matters but be able to deal with ninja on the off chance that the ANBU or more experienced officers are unavailable or arrive too late to be of any use to the situation.

CLASH OF CULTURES.
When Mercy Chidi’s husband died in a car crash she caught the eye of John Burke Baidoo, a human rights lawyer from Ghana who had worked on the 160 Girls Project.  John received his law degree in Ghana in 2006.  He served as the Ghanaian Ambassador to the Economic, Cultural and Social Council of the African Union, worked with African dignitaries such as Kenya’s Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai and was an advocate for many years for the rights of women  and children in Ghana and Kenya.  He is walking, along with a Kenyan, across Kenya to support those causes.
He fell in love with Mercy and her four children.  Together they had an unexpected surprise named Aida who Mercy gave birth to at an age when she thought she was not going down that motherhood path again.  We laughed that the social worker involved in reproductive issues in Kenya for so many years was taken by surprise by her pregnancy in her mid-40s.  Adia is beautiful and John adores his new family.  All six of them.
So, here’s the irony.  John is a King in Ghana.  There are dozens of tribes in Ghana and each of them has a chieftain or king.  One would think this is perhaps a ceremonial post, but no, not exactly.  Although King John is not involved in politics, the Kings of Ghana play an important role as they have an important role over traditional laws and customs and own all the land in their kingdoms.
In Ghana, the royal children inherit blood through their mother and their spirit through their father.  All inheritance is through the maternal line.  When a King of Ghana dies, The Kingmakers get together and decide which of the eligible male descendants through the maternal line will be anointed as the next king.  No kidding.  We heard a story that sounded akin to a kidnapping when John learned he was to be anointed king.  He feigned he had no idea, but acknowledged he was a favorite of his uncle, the previous king and Mercy, his wife, didn’t sound surprised when he was chosen -- though I think she expected it to be many years down the road.
John is Catholic.  The traditional customs are more pantheistic.  The king has a harem.  You heard me right.  This Catholic, happily married human rights lawyer has been anointed king of an area that has pantheistic beliefs and expects him to either select women to be in his harem or pay them off so they are free to marry another.  Crazy.  Navigating the world of different cultures.  I sense that his uncle may have urged the kingmakers to select John because of his human rights and justice inclinations.  I have high hopes he will navigate his responsibilities and his authority to resolve disputes in a manner that reflects his values.  It sounds like his kingdom generates enough funds for him to pay off the harem too.  As I said, crazy.

Paper代写:Modes of Gift Exchange
1)I chose the modes of gift exchanges as the topic of studying cultural variations from a global perspective.
Gift exchange is a common area of research in the humanities and social sciences. Gifts hold immense symbolism and social implications, far beyond their actual material worth or identity, and examining the process of gift giving allows us to examine the social means by which an object becomes a gift. For religious holiday gifts, they allow an examination of a society's understanding of the relationship between God and man, the relationship between humans and possessions, and methods of social communications and cultural symbolism in the relationships between humans and each other.
In ancient society, the offering, exchanges, acceptances, rebates, preservation, even sacrifices and rituals relating to gifts represent abundant social, relational, and symbolic connotations. Gift exchange could be used to explain the whole system of social interactions, and it provides inspirations to study in the modern societies. For example, Peter Whiteley (2004) conducted a 25-year ethnographic study with the Hopi among at understanding their history and culture through their modes of gift exchange. Hopi is a Native American tribe with strong distinct culture. In their culture, gifts served as message, offering, and gift of magical power. After their rational ritual gradually merged into the American society and through years of cultural change and development, it formatted a new gift exchange culture. Therefore, the gift exchange culture is not always immutable. Additionally, due to America’s dominant position, the American gift exchange culture also affects Hopi’s culture and even makes changes in their society.
To sum it up, Gift exchange has a significant role in studying cross-cultural issues. Gift exchange is inspiring people to take a fresh look at our old paradigms of knowledge and culture, and reveals how different cultures interact with each other and form new cultural changes.
2)Gift exchange is a universal phenomenon that is present yet expressed differently in every human society around the world. A truth widely acknowledged is that the meaning of the gift is far more important than the actual physical object’s worth or identity, and that the means and symbolism of its transfer from one person to another is what defines a gift as something unique or more than a simple transfer of material possessions. Given the importance of symbolism to gift-giving, I chose to examine the conditions under which gifts are given and various modes of gift exchange from different societies around the world.
The first example of gift exchange modes was given to me by a Japanese classmate, who explained that it is very common for people in Japan to give their neighbors gifts when they move to a new area. This is partly to introduce yourself and to break the ice with some of your neighbors, as well as apologize for any disturbances you might cause to their lives or environments. Traditionally, one is supposed to buy something small and practical for the neighbors. Small boxes of cookies, dish towels, or laundry soap are traditional—things that can be used by people of all ages and classes. In more crowded urban environments, they might just be left at the door with a small note, while in more rural or quiet environments this experience might be much more interactive and personal, and reciprocity is highly emphasized. It is not mandatory, particularly in high-density urban areas, but it is strongly encouraged and expected.

Speaking to another classmate, an American, taught me about the tradition of wedding registries. A couple getting married, instead of simply expecting friends and family to bring money and presents which might be redundant or unwanted, will create an electronic list at a popular supermarket like Target, and make a list of all the things they want or need to start their new lives, from silverware to home goods to appliances. The process is highly industrial and impersonal, yet extremely efficient at getting a couple the things they want and avoiding the giving of cash, which is largely seen as rude in American culture.

Looking at the gifts given between modern heads of state, we find a long line of bizarre and extravagant gifts. These are given usually in person, yet are coordinated through international staffs and foreign ministries, and steps are often taken to prevent corruption and give the gifts domestic political importance. For example, in America, any gift worth over $375 must be donated to the National Archives, such as the aforementioned sword, and gifts given to foreign dignitaries must be made in the U.S.

Modern diplomatic gift-giving can also be compared to the tributary system of Imperial China and the exchange of gifts between kingdoms and nations several hundred years ago. Large quantities of gifts were sent to and from China’s capital as a symbol of the neighboring countries’ acknowledgment of China’s cultural superiority and supremacy. In times of strife the gifts would have a net flow outward in an attempt to pacify aggressive nations, though the system was never formalized. By enforcing reciprocity, the gift process gave validity to China’s cultural imperialism and colonial efforts over “barbarian” regions like Manchuria, Xinjiang, Vietnam, and Korea, and to giving “face” to the Chinese state.
https://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/history/students/modules/modern_china/readings/peter_perdue_the_tenacious_tributary_system_2015.pdf
Giving lottery tickets is a popular activity in many countries. It is often done casually, with numerous examples of people buying tickets on a whim with whatever change was left while purchasing groceries, without any mathematical hope of winning. However, it is very interesting to examine what happens when the person wins, because a casual situation where no reciprocity was expected suddenly changes as the gift has enormously grown in value.
https://www.consumerreports.org/holiday-shopping/lottery-tickets-as-holiday-gifts/
By looking at the different examples and modes of gift giving under different historical, economic, and social conditions, we can learn much about the underlying principles and meaning of gift-giving.
3)Peter Whiteley’s research has already pointed out that gift exchange is hopi’s important diplomatic means with America. In fact, the relationship between gift exchange and colonialism still exists. In the context of colonialism, the dominant western value directly reflects in the material expression. For example, Hong Kong was under deep influence of the United Kingdom in the colonial era, therefore Christmas has been one of the most important holidays and exchanging gifts is also an indispensable custom. Also, in 1887, in order to transport tin more conveniently out of China, the French decided to build a railway between Vietnam and China. The Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was built under this background and became a veritable “colonial gift.”
We could also find the relationship between gift exchange and hegemony if we further extend the scope of gift. For instance, during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Chinese Tributary System was highly prospered. Japan, North Korea, Vietnam and other places were China's dependents back then. The gift they gave to China was called a “tributary,” but the materials rebounded by China to them were regarded as “rewards.” It clearly reflects the status of the state and the status of inequality and contains an attitude to show cultural superiority from China’s side.
Imperialism is also related to gift exchange. Cultural imperialism means that if a country has its influence (such as soft power) in its social system and culture, its influence changes the moral, cultural and social values of another country. For example, traditionally Chinese people think that open gifts right after receiving them is impolite. But due to the huge impact of American culture on modern China, the young generation in China usually opens others’ gifts right in front of them and shows gratitude.
4)Imagine I was going to conduct further research on the modes of gift exchange and engage in ethnographic fieldwork, I would use participant observation, interviews, life histories, and videos.
First of all, primary sources are very important for cross-cultural research. Ethnographic researchers usually spend a long period of time to observe personal behaviors and collective behaviors on various occasions. Participant observation requires me to conduct direct and long-term observation on the rail behavior of my subjects, which contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the motives and other factors that affect their behaviors and customs. Cooperating with structured or semi-structured interviews, including random conversations in households. This method helps to establish and maintain mutual trust with my subjects and offer relevant knowledge in details. In long-term interviews, I will build the system of the causes, histories, commonalities, and differences in the modes of gift exchange among a national or regional population.
Secondly, some of the subjects might be more interested in my research than the others and more capable of contributing special points of view. Or some of them might be delightful to deal with and more generous to help. At this point, life histories would be a really effective methodology. In addition, there are often surprises in the life histories or stories research process and chances of gaining original and meaningful anthropological research outcomes.
Finally, with the development of science and technology, ethnographic research presents more diverse ways. Compared to articles and photos, dynamic videos is better to visually restore the real state of life of the subjects, that is why I would like to make a video record of my research.
These methodologies would help me to establish a more holistic understanding of the modes of gift exchange.
