So THIS is why I came … It takes a while for humans to acclimate to each other’s hearts, but here we are. Mom and I decorated our fresh Christmas tree together, and every ornament is from someone we love or have loved and is no longer living … Mom and I are so Present with each other. This …. is why I came.

There are gorgeous #strawstars that she and her friends made in the 1960’s. Every time I see her straw stars I am inspired to make my own, but they are SO much work. The quilling ornaments are ridiculously beautiful, and makes me want to learn quilling ... Having real candles on the tree is such a sacred space. Don’t worry, we take every kind of safety precaution - a fresh fir tree, close all surrounding doors so there are no drafts, someone is looking at the candles at all the time, it’s a quiet watching event, not just for decoration. The Stimmung of watching candles on a tree is so soothing.

I baked this meringue tree cake with orange curd and ‘snow’ (powdered sugar) on the ‘branches’ (lavender) and am making a mental note that there is art and design in everything.  :) For now I have to just keep building what is inside my heart … And trust that I will be guided about how to make it my ‘outside world’, too.

When I was a kid, my Nan and I would make jam and curds every summer. We would come home from our holiday in devon with pounds and pounds of plums from my uncle's garden, or the lovely gent who lived in our village would bestow upon us all the strawberries from his allotment that he couldn't get through. We would set about the task of turning these ripe, delicious fruits into glorious jams that could be enjoyed year-round. There would be pans, more jars than you could count, sugar for days and always, always that trip to the chemist to get an extra bottle of pectin in case we didn't quite have enough. Fruit and sugar would bubble away together like a Witch's brew in a cauldron, turning from sugar and fruit into a thick jewel-coloured goo that would happily grace any sponge cake or slice of toast. Until today I hadn't made any preserves in probably 25 years. I have had oranges glaring at me from the fruit bowl, demanding to be used. So use them I did. I brought out my faithful kitchen companion The Farmhouse Kitchen Cookbook and found the recipe for Lemon or Orange Curd (I chose orange obvs 😉) 40 minutes of gentle stirring and I was rewarded with this beautiful jar of summer. My whole kitchen smells deliciously of oranges and I am anxiously waiting for the curd to cool so I can spread some onto a slice of bread 😋 and tomorrow a good portion if it will be making it's way into a Victoria Sponge. I can't believe it has taken me so long to make it again. I certainly won't wait so long next time.
