As y'all know I love TCM 1 and 2 but I find it incredibly funny that, despite the fact so many Texans worked on the movie, the geography in it is a fucking mess.

To start, the first movie is stated to take place in the fictional town of Newt, in the also-fictional Muerto County. Most people assume Newt to be located somewhere outside of Austin, given that's where it was filmed. Makes sense. The TCM game even goes with this interpretation, with a map showing them in the Travis County area.

But at one point in the movie, Drayton mentions needing to drive over to Childress. As if it's nearby.

Slight problem with that-

THEY'RE SIX HOURS APART. So then you think, okay, maybe Newt isn't near Austin, maybe it's farther North.

But the second movie throws a wrench into things.

If we go with this, then the Childress thing is again bizarre, as it's pretty far North. It also conflicts with the Austin area setting.

As seen here, Austin and Travis County are closer to Central Texas. Nobody from Texas would call this South, unless they were fudging it a bit I suppose.

Moving on, we have Stretch and LG's radio station being located in Burkburnett. Now, Burkburnett is another real city, and it's near the Oklahoma border. The movie seems to know this too, as the station is named K-OKLA, and the Red River (which separates that part of TX and OK) gets mentioned. Nice and realistic! However, at one point Stretch describes Burkburnett as being "at the top of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex"...

Personally, I wouldn't describe a two hour difference as being "at the top of" an area. And Lefty apparently drove two hours just to ask Stretch to play her tape on the air.

I will give them some credit though: One cops mentions sending Lefty back to Amarillo. There is in fact a Rangers department in that city. They also have the Texas vs OU game being played in DFW, which is correct, as they traditionally face off at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Points for those details! But in terms of picking a location for the main events, things are a lot more scattered.

Anyway yeah, I know it's just a movie, mistakes happen, no big deal, but the inaccuracies are just really funny to me, in particular the Newt situation. Feels like Newt is TCM's personal version of Springfield.

Acabo de descobrir que a famosa “fonte do gerador de caracteres da Globo”, que também frequentou alguns comerciais impressos da Volkswagen, com algumas alterações, SIM, chegou a existir em formato digital.

E mais, em um GC igual ao do SBT (na verdade, todas as emissoras, menos a Manchete e a TV Cultura, já usaram esse equipamento, incluindo outras empresas como Polishop, Radiobrás, Rede Gospel, Televisa e Walt Disney do Brasil - sei lá, acho que só eu não tive esse GC na América Latina mesmo - e era em Standard Definition, imagine se fosse HD - E mais, a TV Globo usava em programações secundárias, como aberturas de minisséries estrangeiras em uma época em que eles decidiram fazer um visual próprio para cada minissérie - e aparentemente também era o GC do TV Pirata de 1988 a 1990.

Era o da Rede Paranaense, em 1992 - a mesma daquelas telas paradas de 1999. Aquela que já me fez arrancar os cabelos de como seu padrão visual era diferente das outras, fora um certo mau gosto nas trilhas sonoras... (tudo isso a partir de 2023 vendo pelo YouTube, eu nunca estive tanto tempo no Paraná que pudesse assistir á essa emissora.)

Na Rede Paranaense, o logo do telejornal era feito pelo próprio GC, em vez de ser um gráfico importado de outro lugar, como costumava ser em outras afiliadas.

Reparem que NÃO É A VAG ROUNDED (que existe tranquilamente em TrueType e poderia até ser, mas não é). Imagens de 1994.

Esse GC, ao que tudo indica, baseava os tipos de letra em fontes TrueType. Ao contrário de equipamentos da mesma época (como os de Manchete e Globo), onde as letras eram pixel arts de, sei lá, 5 ou 6 tamanhos diferentes, com os dados gravados em placas de expansão - inclua-se o GC das aberturas das novelas globais - mas esse outro equipamento fazia letras de qualquer tamanho, inclusive intermediários que até então não existiam (como visto nas primeiras edições do Aqui Agora, onde as manchetes eram menores do que seriam depois). Qualquer tamanho e qualquer aspecto também (condensado, expandido, etc.), como vimos no Programa Livre. Fora rotacionar e até espelhar as letras, algo de necessidade zero em 90% da programação de TV convencional.

Outra prova é que eu, ávido colecionador dessas coisas, já encontrei todos os tipos de letra usados pelo SBT nesse equipamento em fontes TrueType que só podem ser as próprias, sendo totalmente idênticas - (Helvetica bold e normal, Univers Bold, Futura, Cooper Bold, Prestige, Latin 721 e Windsor - esta última muito rara, mas tá lá. E todos pelo mesmo fabricante, a Bitstream.

(Curiosidade, a Helvetica ‘roman’ nunca foi usada pelo SBT, mas foi abusada por outras empresas, como a Polishop.)

O que eu acho curioso é a, digamos “personalidade” na escolha de alguns desses typefaces. Cooper sempre foi usado a versão black antes desse GC aparecer. Prestige nunca foi unanimidade para quem teve máquinas de escrever elétricas, o pessoal usava mais a Courier.

(Esse typeface teve seu estrelato total no Canal 21, quando este ainda tinha infraestrutura e jornalismo próprio.)

Também existem da Bitstream outras fontes que eu vi em outros programas ou horários políticos e “acho” que é o mesmo GC só que numa segunda geração, como Handel Gothic, Brody e Futura Bold Condensed.

E onde estará essa fonte de terminações arredondadas? Porquê mesmo em sites profissionais nós não a encontramos?...

Essa pode ser a fonte digital mais exclusiva do mundo - talvez só perca para a Folha Serif, de Lucas De Groot, desenhada para a Folha de São Paulo.

Last night I got high and wrote a program to find all of the unused elemental symbols. It turns out there’s 585 of them and it’s much less interesting the next day.

RENAULT 5 ALPINE: O IRREDUTÍVEL GAULÊS

É curioso perceber como a história se repete. Numa altura em que a Alpine regressa em força ao estatuto de divisão desportiva do Grupo Renault e que até serve de inspiração para versões de vocação mais dinâmica no seio da gama da marca, recordamos o R5 Alpine, um pequeno desportivo que marcou uma era.

Após o lançamento do icónico R5 em 1972, a Renault continuou a desenvolver as capacidades do bem-sucedido modelo. Em março de 1976, o Renault 5 Alpine brilha sob os holofotes do Salão Automóvel de Genebra e deixa os amantes de pequenos desportivos ágeis e divertidos de conduzir extasiados.

Facilmente reconhecível pela sua decoração especifica, o R5 Alpine ainda hoje não deixa ninguém indiferente pela combinação da pintura negra com as riscas vermelhas. O "A5" envolto numa moldura vermelha nas laterais, na porta traseira e na extremidade do capô, os para-choques pretos com um spoiler na dianteira e luzes de nevoeiro integradas, o espelho retrovisor em forma de concha ou as jantes em liga-leve rematavam o exterior e davam um cunho claramente desportivo ao R5 Alpine.

No interior, inspirado no do R5 TS, a combinação cromática mantinha-se, mas invertem-se a ordem das prioridades e o vermelho passa a dominar. Os bancos desportivos e os painéis das portas adotaram este tom, enquanto a instrumentação específica ganha mostradores adicionais e inclui conta-rotações. Outros elementos distintivos eram o belíssimo volante Moto-Lita de três raios com acabamento em pele (em 1978 passou a ser Iso-Delta) e o novo manípulo das mudanças, também ele revestido em couro. Finalmente, o pedal do acelerador era ao estilo “tecla de piano” e a todo o comprimento.

Em 1978, o R5 Alpine recebeu as rodas de liga do tipo "bobina" e em 1979 o interior mudou quase por completo, adotando novos bancos e um novo painel de instrumentos, mas mantendo o volante de três raios.

A potência não conta a história toda

Embora, já em 1972, tivesse sido apresentada à imprensa uma versão mais “musculada” do Renault 5 equipada com o motor de 1,565cc dos Renault 12 Gordini, a marca tomou a decisão de pegar no motor Cléon do R5 TS já existente e de o equipar com uma cabeça de cilindro hemisférica e um carburador duplo Weber 32 DIR. Com isto, a potência aumentou substancialmente para os 93 cv. Esta unidade foi então acoplada a uma caixa manual de cinco velocidades emprestada pelo novo, na altura, Renault 16 TX. Uma vez que esta caixa de velocidades é mais longa do que a caixa normal de quatro velocidades de um Renault 5, os engenheiros tiveram de criar espaço adicional na dianteira, o que explica o porquê de o para-choques do 5 Alpine ser esticado face ao modelo “convencional”. Além disso, também já não havia espaço para a roda sobresselente no compartimento do motor, pelo que esta passou a estar colocada na mala, envolta numa cobertura preta e amarrada com uma correia de tecido.

Mas ninguém se queixava, já que com este conjunto motor/caixa, o R5 Alpine conseguia atingir os 175 km/h de velocidade máxima, um valor digno de destaque em meados da década de 70. Tendo em conta o peso-pluma de apenas 850 kg, o R5 Alpine movia-se com uma agilidade desconcertante. As alterações no chassis (40 mm mais baixo face ao um R5 tradicional, em parte, devido aos pneus de perfil mais reduzido) e a adoção de diferentes amortecedores e de barras estabilizadoras mais grossas em ambos os eixos, resultaram num comportamento muito acima da média para a época. A cereja no topo do bolo eram as pinças de travão dianteiras mais potentes, que permitiam reduzir significativamente as distâncias de travagem.

Por todas estas características, o R5 Alpine ainda hoje é um clássico extremamente desejado e, mais importante, um pequeno desportivo muito competente que pode proporcionar momentos únicos de condução numa estreita e contorcida estrada de montanha.
