Brooklyn 99/Pacific Rim crossover
The weird thing about being a cop was that it was pretty much the same whether or not the entire world was slowly being squashed by giant alien lizard ocean monsters.
Okay, yes, there was slightly more debris, so the roads were a tiny bit more difficult to navigate without a pickaxe and a shovel, but people still got robbed and murdered and carjacked and the very least Jake could do for his country and the human race was to catch the robbers and murderers and carjackers.
If only the pickaxes and shovels weren’t quite so necessary.
“This—was—not—one—of—my—better—decisions,” Jake grunted, punctuating each word with a jab at the giant kaiju—intestine? Heart?—that was currently slumped and oozing all over Jake’s car.
“Peralta!”
Jake turned, dropping the snow shovel he’d been using to hack at the kaiju guts.
“Captain!” He laughed nervously. “What—what’s up, man? I mean, sir. What’s up, sir? Um.” Jake blinked. “Nice hat.”
“You realize that kaiju blood is highly toxic,” Holt said. He was wearing a hazmat suit that Jake could only assume he made himself. It appeared to be mostly garbage bags and duct tape. He was holding a broom.
“Yeah, uh.” Jake turned back to the guts on his car. He didn’t particularly want to explain to Captain Holt that he’d taken some files home to review. Neon Gambit had made quick work of the kaiju this morning, chopping it into little bite-sized pieces with its—buzz saw?—whatever that was, but the unfortunate fallout was all over Jake’s car, trapping the purloined box. “Would you believe it if I told you I joined a cleanup crew?”
“I would not.” Holt angled the broom and used the end of its handle to lift Jake’s fingers, one by one, off the shovel.
Jake let go of the shovel. It hit the icy sidewalk with a clank.
“Inside,” Holt commanded. He pivoted on his plastic-wrapped heel and went up the steps of the precinct.
***
Jake walked into the bullpen literally thirty seconds after Holt. He looked around. “Captain?”
“Peralta.”
Jake turned. Holt was standing in the doorway of his office, looking immaculately groomed, no sign of the plastic bag suit anywhere.
Jake sputtered. “How—?”
“I will be hosting a friend from out of town this weekend,” Holt said, looking around the bullpen at his assembled detectives. “He’ll be staying with Kevin and me while he’s here. We will be having a late afternoon reception for him on Saturday and I would like you all to attend, if you are so inclined.”
Jake grinned. “That sounds like a wild party.”
“We will provide food and beverages,” Holt said. “Please, no wine drink.”
Jake raised his hand. “Hey, Captain?”
Holt blinked at him, which Jake took as a sign that he could talk. “Can I bring a plus-one?”
Amy frowned at Jake. “I thought I was your plus-one.”
“Technically,” Charles said, “a plus-one is someone who isn’t already invited to the event. Emily Post recommends a two-envelope system for inviting your guest’s guest. Do you have envelopes, Captain? If you don’t have some picked out, I can give you recommendations. There’s an excellent stationery shop—”
Holt interrupted, clenching his jaw. “I do not need envelopes, Boyle.”
Charles shut his mouth. “Right.”
“So, my plus-one...?” Jake let the question hang.
“Fine,” Holt said. “You may have one guest attend. Please ensure they are...” He paused. “Presentable.”
“Pssht.” Jake flapped a hand at Holt. “He’s totally presentable. Totally.”
***
To Amy’s credit, she did not scream when the tentacle fell out of the refrigerator.
She did, however, lurch backwards so fast that she crashed painfully into the island and knocked the open jar of peanut butter onto the floor. It didn’t break, so that was good, but peanut butter slopped over the tile and up the cabinets.
Amy backed slowly away from the tentacle, trying to figure out how to close the refrigerator without touching it.
“Jake,” she called, keeping her voice calm. An explanation. There was surely a reasonable explanation for a tentacle in the refrigerator. Right?
No answer.
She raised her voice. “Jake!”
“In here, Ames!”
Amy went to the bathroom and opened the door.
“What the—”
Jake was kneeling on the floor. A guy with glasses was perched, bird-like, on the toilet seat. They were both poking with sticks at the tub.
“Oh my God!” Amy staggered back. “What the hell is that?”
Jake looked up at Amy, grinning. “Hi, Ames. This is Newt.”
“Do you mean the person,” Amy snapped, “or the pile of guts in the bathtub?”
“Excuse me!” The glasses guy swung his stick around toward Amy. She jumped backwards for the second time in ninety seconds. “This is not a pile of guts. This is an array of samples curated by the finest brains in biology for an extremely important conference that Brooklyn is fortunate enough to host. Please don’t impugn them by calling them guts.”
“I assume this is the reason for the tentacle in the refrigerator,” Amy said from between clenched teeth.
“Proboscis,” Glasses Guy corrected.
“Jake.” Amy glared.
“Uh, Newt.” Jake put down his poking stick and stood up. “Maybe cease and desist for a second, buddy.” He got up and came into the hallway, closing the door behind him.
Amy hoped that the degree of bugginess of her eyes would accurately convey her extreme displeasure.
Jake held up his hands. “I can explain.”
“Please.”
“Newt is in town to give a talk at this, I don’t know, nerd convention.” Jake let his hands fall onto Amy’s shoulders. “He’s only here for three days and I thought it would be okay if he stayed here. Is it okay? Ames? Are you mad?”
“You didn’t think to run it by me first?” Amy said, because of course she was mad, they had a bathtub full of guts.
“He just texted me this morning.” Jake was starting to sound whiny.
“At some point we need to sit down and have a serious conversation about the rules of living together,” Amy said. She stepped away from Jake’s hands and folded her arms. “He needs to get the piles of slime out of all common spaces.”
“Done.” Jake grinned broadly.
“There is to be no Guitar Hero after nine PM.”
“No problem.”
Amy narrowed her eyes. “And I want to know what you mean by nerd convention.”
Jake stuck out his lower lip and shrugged. “Sure.” He pushed the bathroom door open again. “Hey Newt?”
“Hey Jake, you have any big bowls? Like mixing bowls? Glass preferably, but ceramic will work, you probably shouldn’t give me plastic unless you don’t want to use them again.” Newt shoved his glasses up onto his nose with a black-gloved finger.
Two of the slimy piles, Amy saw, had migrated from the bathtub to the sink. Amy smacked Jake on the back.
“Fix this,” she hissed.
“Okay, okay, okay!” Jake reached for the box of rubber gloves.
Amy shuddered. “Tentacle too,” she reminded Jake, and shut the bathroom door.

Imad Mughniyah was alleged to have responsibility for this particular bombing, however this has been disputed. These include 18 April 1983 bombing of the United States embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, which killed 63 people including 17 Americans whom among them were 7 CIA officers which included Robert Ames the head of Near East Division. Agreement is not entirely universal on Mughniyeh's involvement, and Caspar Weinberger, the Secretary of Defense at the time of the attack, told PBS in 2001, "We still do not have the actual knowledge of who was directly behind and responsible for the bombing of the American Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon and we certainly didn't then."” 1992 Los Angeles riots 63 dead, 2,383 wounded Date(s): April 29 - May 4, 1992 Target(s): Supermarkets and other business stores (including video stores, shoe stores, auto part stores, check cashing stores, five and dime stores, etc.), city streets and intersections, residential neighborhoods, parking lots, city squares, gas stations and liquor stores, apartment complexes, etc. Location(s): Los Angeles County, California; 3 died in San Diego (South Park); 1 in Fresno (Del Rey) Weapon(s): 40 by gunfire (including 5 who were shot by police), 23 by other causes; including 1 by strangulation, 2 stabbed, 8 vehicle-related, 2 from blunt force-related injuries, 2 were beaten to death, 3 from fire, 3 unknown, 1 from a fall and 1 from a heart attack Perpetrator(s): Odell Whitley Jr., Leonard Hampton and another unnamed teen(?) Rivera; blunt force), Fidel Ortiz and Leonard Sosa (Wallace Tope; beaten), three men, two of whom were teenagers (Matthew D. Haines; shot), 15-year-old boy (Juana Espinosa; shot), Samiee Farzan (Imad Sharaf; fire), Andre Webb and Lavelle "Frog" Williams (Charles Orebo; shot), most others no charges were ever brought against, because they were either unrelated to the riot (one person died with a cigarette in his mouth while he slept that burned the house down) or no arrests were made because, as according to the Chief Spokesman Bob Dambacher, "Would this person have died at that particular time and that particular place if riots had not occurred?" Was the criteria for his office. Also because some of them were by police/self-defense, were accidents or because the crimes were unsolved (22 - 23+ cases still remain unsolved to this day). Or at least I couldn’t find any articles naming the suspects for many of them. Smashy
Santiago, Chile: Incendiary Attack Against the Mother of Divine Providence Parish During the Visit of the Pope
“Anonymous attackers managed to break the padlock of the perimeter fence of the religious temple, then set the Vatican and Chilean flags on fire at the the feet of a sculpture of the Virgin, as well as throwing incendiary devices at the doors of the Parish. The fire began to spread both at the door and inside the Parish before being discovered by priests and security guards who extinguished it. At the scene they would have found anarchist leaflets which were not mentioned by the media, but would have contained slogans against religion and the Pope’s visit to Chile.“
Report Back from the Eagles Riots: A Chance for Solidarity, but More Importantly, a Chance for Joy | anarchistnews.org
“On January 21st, we took the opportunity to take part in the temporary autonomous spaces created by the post victory fervor of thousands of football fans. Realizing that the soon to be victory of the Eagles was an ample time for us to strike back against the domination of civilization, the police, and the prison walls built by our own deteriorating mental, we met up with friends outside of Lincoln Financial field with the intention of freeing ourselves, albeit temporarily. We joined up with fellow members of the continuous class war in their celebration, singing, chanting, lighting fires, and using this opportunity to attack ATMs and throw a little bit of art on the dismal walls of south Philadelphia. We moved down broad street with a roving party that the Philly PD just couldn’t seem to shut down.“

Arriving early in the morning, the cops were met with activists occupying blockading-infrastructure, including 2 tripods, 3 monopods, a skypod, and a 3 meter deep tunnel. The cutting of the Hambacher Forest was officially stopped early this season, on a court-decision, postponing cutting until October 1st 2018, however the risk of eviction of the occupation is as great as ever.

San Diego, CA: Report on Autonomous Activity Over Last Week - It's Going Down
“Food Not Bombs of San Diego/Drop the Ban held one of several actions defying El Cajon’s new law against feeding houseless people in public on MLK Day. Earlier in the day, reportedly a blue lives matter flag was captured from a local business in an increasingly gentrified, hip part of town, and the words “I CAN’T BREATHE,” were seen painted onto the side of the building.“
“Meanwhile, signs have been put up in all of the popular panhandling spots with the words “DON’T SUPPORT PAN HANDLING. CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION…” Suggesting people donate to other services online instead. These signs are promptly being vandalized. Lastly, on January 20th, in solidarity with the J20 defendants and increasing border struggles a very large banner was dropped over the busy I-15. This action was taken by non-Indigenous people as a minimal act of solidarity with the ongoing struggles of First Nations peoples.”
Infiltration
An Anarchist Survey of Amazon: Day Two | anarchistnews.org
“Security was very lose and we entered without issue or incident. This laxness was due in large part to the fact that Jeff Bezos was not going to be there. Our first observation was that the majority of Amazon employees in Seattle are between the ages of 25 and 35, many of whom wore Romanesque laurels around their heads. The only major exceptions were immigrant tech employees on H1B visas who were mostly in their 40s and early 50s. Our first stop was the silent dancing area where two hundred employees danced to music over specialty headphones provided for the occasion. It was eerily reminiscent of the celibate loner cult depicted in the film The Lobster who danced silently to their headphones in the middle of a forest. “
Union Activity
Portland, OR: Burgerville Workers Union Pickets and Expands Into More Stores - It's Going Down
“Our first picket of the year kicked off 2018 right: faced with yet another strong picket, Burgerville CLOSED THE STORE for the duration of the action for a suspicious “maintenance inspection.” This is the power of workers and the community coming together to show that we can and will continue to shut union-busters down!“

J20 Solidarity Demonstration in Grand Rapids, MI - It's Going Down
“On January 20, about 30 people held an event in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan in solidarity with the remaining J20 defendants. There was a short rally with speakers about the J20 case, ongoing struggles, and the importance of fighting back. Following the speakers, the crowd burned an American flag and a Trump banner before setting off on a march through the center of the city. There were numerous people masked up, anarchist flags were flying, and anti-fascist chants were plentiful.“
Berkeley, CA: Antifa Patrol Turns Up Zero Alt-Right Posters - It's Going Down
“Along the way, we were able to put several anti-fascist stickers up on campus and the surrounding area. So in the end, what was to be a 4chan propaganda night ended up becoming yet another opportunity to make it known that Berkeley is an antifa zone!“
Albany, NY: Anarchists & Radicals Stand in Solidarity with J20 Defendants at Benefit - It's Going Down
“The Albany anarchist and radical community came out en mass to celebrate and support J20 defendants at a benefit show thrown at community education space The Albany Free School in the city’s Mansion District. The event put on by “friendly neighborhood anarchists,” featured over a dozen bands from around the capital region, vegan pizza sourced and catered by Albany Food Not Bombs, and a raffle with anarchist themed prizes donated by groups such as It’s Going Down and AK Press.”
Phoenix, AZ: #MyBordersMyChoice Neo-Nazi Propaganda Efforts Foiled by Antifascists - It's Going Down
“Around 50 fliers were found in total, a large increase in prior instances, and it was determined that at least two people were involved, with the comparison of fliers, and techniques used to post them. After we were confident that we had rounded up the significant majority of fascist materials, we moved to a nearby park and disposed of them by fire.“
Stand With Tariq Khan As Alt-Right Outrage Machine Inspires Death Threats - It's Going Down
“It is questionable whether Khan and his partner will be able to continue their studies uninterrupted, putting their dreams on hold until racists can stop making harassment their pet cause.  This is disgusting, and it is not something we are going to stand by and just let happen.  Khan is a respected academic and scholar, a celebrated educator, a committed student, and an amazing father and husband.  We will not allow college campuses to be the killing fields for Alt Right terror, and we stand with Khan and anyone else who has been victimized by this kind of threat.”
Knoxville, TN: Neo-Nazis outnumbered 700 to 1 at Knoxville Women’s March - It's Going Down
“Less than two hours after they arrived at their barricaded protest area, the Traditionalist Worker Party members were escorted back to their vehicles in a nearby parking garage by several police officers in riot gear. A crowd of antifa and anti-racist activists followed them, shouting, “Go home Nazi.”
Outreach

Chile: Prison Officer Michelle Barahona, Responsible for the Harassment & Mistreatment of Anarchist Comrade Tamara Sol (Eng/Esp)
“Tamara Sol has been punished in a severe and inhuman manner. The last incident was provoked when two common prisoners, instructed by the gendarmarie, threatened Tamara and she defended herself. Tamara and two comrades who came to her aid, were brutally beaten, locked in ‘La Jaula’ (punishment cell) and shackled, with their hands and feet bound.“
Third Black Cville Resident Arrested in Wake of 'Unite the Right' - It's Going Down
“Mr. Blakney is the third counter-protester to be arrested and charged arising out of the events in Charlottesville on August 12, 2017. Corey Long and DeAndre Harris are both also facing criminal charges. All three are Black men and local residents who were attacked that day.“
Italy – The Italian government’s politics in Libya |
“With the shameless pretext of the ‘struggle against human traffickers’, the Italian State is lavishly financing war lords, guards and militias (those clumsily defined as the ‘Libyan government’) for the control and mass internment of the poor in flight. Patrols and refusal of entry along the Mediterranean coast, the detention of about six hundred thousand people in the Libyan concentration camps, the erection of a wall in the desert along theborders with Niger, Chad and Mali.“
The Heat is On: Update on Week 1 of #OperationPUSH - It's Going Down
“Prison organizers who correspond with these groups are being targeted for having their “security threat level” increased–a practice that translates into greater isolation and harsher conditions of confinement. One prisoner was told point blank, “As long as you communicate with these people you’re always going to be labelled a security threat and you’re always going to be put under investigation. ”Communication has been curtailed so severely that it’s hard to know how much of an economic impact the strike has had so far; we do know that in some cases scab labor has been brought in to keep facilities running.“
BREAKING: Rashid Johnson Tortured by Florida DOC - It's Going Down
“Kevin “Rashid” Johnson is being tortured at the Florida State Prison according to an “emergency note” Rashid’s lawyers received from him yesterday dated 1/19. It is suspected the torture began sometime between 1/12 and 1/19 since there was no mention of it in his 1/12 communication. No other details are available at this time but we will post updates here once we have them. This comes immediately after news that Rashid faces an “inciting a riot” charge for merely reporting on #OperationPUSH. Arrests and Injuries as Mexicali Resiste Defends Blockade Against Police Attack - It's Going Down
“For more than one year, residents of Mexicali have been organizing against the construction of a brewery and aqueduct by the U.S. company Constellation Brands. If completed, the facility would produce beer for export to the U.S. and consume seven to thirty million cubic meters of water annually. (A city of one million uses around 20 million cubic meters.) Earlier this month, members of Mexicali Resiste began blockading aqueduct construction. On January 16, state and local police forces attacked the blockade and an hours-long confrontation ensued. While the blockade was successfully defended, at least five were arrested and ten injured. Below is a translation of the statement released later that day by Mexicali Resiste.“

Cops, Cameras, and Condos: Bloomington Is Getting Worse - It's Going Down
“Bloomington is not an unaffordable, tightly-packed, constantly-surveilled dystopia yet. There are more condos, cameras, and cops now than in the recent past, and there will be even more of all three in the future. This piece is not meant to produce a feeling of hopelessness, but rather point out to those who are threatened by these new developments how the situation here is changing, so we can adapt. The forces of order are still not omnipotent, not even close.”

Trump panned over reports he called US war dead 'losers'

Image caption The US president has dismissed the reports as “fake news”
US President Donald Trump is facing a backlash over reports he mocked American soldiers killed in action as “losers” and “suckers”.
The alleged remarks were first reported in the Atlantic magazine, and some details were corroborated by the Associated Press and Fox News.
But the president and his allies have denied he made the remarks.
Veterans’ groups were among those who attacked the president over the reports.
Progressive group VoteVets posted a video of families whose children were killed in action. “You don’t know what it is to sacrifice,” says one.
Paul Rieckhoff of the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, tweeted: “Who is really surprised by this?”
Analysts say the comments could prove damaging with the president needing support from military voters as he bids for re-election.
What is Trump reported to have said?
According to The Atlantic, Mr Trump cancelled a visit to a US cemetery outside Paris in 2018 because he said it was “filled with losers”.
Four sources told the magazine he rejected the idea of visiting because the rain would dishevel his hair, and he did not believe it important to honour America’s war dead.
Trump loves the military. Do they love him back?
Trump says famed military newspaper will not close
During the same trip, the president also allegedly referred to 1,800 US soldiers who died at Belleau Wood as “suckers”. The battle helped to prevent a German advance on Paris during World War One and is venerated by the US Marine Corps.
In 2018 the White House said the visit was cancelled because bad weather had grounded the president’s helicopter. This account was backed up in a recent book by President Trump’s former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who has been a vocal critic of Mr Trump.
The Atlantic’s reporting was based on anonymous sources but the Associated Press said it had independently confirmed many of the remarks. A Fox News correspondent said she had corroborated some of the remarks.
What has the reaction been?
On top of the comments from veterans, President Trump’s challenger in November’s presidential election, Joe Biden, responded by saying his rival was “unfit” to lead.
“If the article is true – and it appears to be, based on other things he’s said – it is absolutely damning. It is a disgrace.”

Media captionTrump and the US military: Friends or foe?
Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs while serving in Iraq, said President Trump “liked to use the US military for his own ego”.
Khizr Khan, the father of a US soldier killed in Iraq who criticised Mr Trump during the 2016 Democratic convention, joined Ms Duckworth on the call.
He said: “When Donald Trump calls anyone who places their lives in service of others a loser, we understand Trump’s soul.”
How is the White House fighting the story?
President Trump has pushed back hard against the reports, calling them “fake news”.
“To think that I would make statements negative to our military and our fallen heroes when nobody’s done what I’ve done with the budgets, with the military budgets, with getting pay raises for our military,” he said. “It is a disgraceful situation by a magazine that’s a terrible magazine.”
Speaking to reporters on Friday, he suggested the source of the story was his former White House chief of staff, John Kelly. Mr Trump said the former US Marine general “was unable to handle the pressure of this job”.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News on Friday morning he was with the president for a good part of the trip to France and never heard him use the words described in the article.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper was quoted by Politico as saying Mr Trump had “the highest respect and admiration for our nation’s military members, veterans and families”, though the Pentagon chief did not explicitly deny the story.
Another former White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, and former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders were among those in Mr Trump’s orbit who rejected the story as false.
Where do Trump and the US military stand?
The US president has often staked claim to strong support among the military, and Pew Research Center last year found that veterans were generally supportive of him as commander-in-chief, with 57% in favour. Three-fifths of the veterans identified as Republican, the research found.
But there have been previous spats and controversies.
He caused outrage by saying the late Senator John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was not a “war hero” saying: “I like people who weren’t captured.”
President Trump has never served in uniform. He received five deferments from a military draft during the Vietnam War – four for academic reasons and one for bone spurs, a calcium build-up in the heels.

Opening Bell: January 17, 2020
Tumblr media
Yesterday, the third impeachment trial in American history opened when House impeachment managers, both Democratic and Republican, crossed the corridors of the Capitol, entered the Senate chamber and read the two articles. Shortly afterward, Chief Justice John Roberts crossed the street from the Supreme Court and took his place at the Senate’s podium to swear in the 100 Senators as “impartial” chambers and preside over the impeachment. The actual trial will begin next Tuesday and, in the meantime the Senate undertook other business, and at this point the outcome of the Senate trial seems little in doubt; with a Republican majority of 6 and two-thirds of the chamber required to convict, the removal from office of President Donald Trump seems unlikely. And yet it seems that failing to act was not in the cards either. A cynic would suggest that, even though following through with impeachment after it was threatened in the fall was necessary, what unfolds over the next few weeks seems unlikely to change the trajectory of the Trump administration.
Around the same time Chief Justice John Roberts was roaming the hallways of the Capitol, the Senate overwhelmingly approved the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Act, a week after it passed the House of Representatives. The free trade act, which modifies, but does not significantly alter the existing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), attracted a large number of Democratic supporters in both chambers because of the large amount of pro-labor provisions negotiated in by congressional Democrats. While passage does represent a political victory for the president, it also include provisions which a number of Democrats in Congress can campaign on in the election this year. And passage itself, it has been speculated, was pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a sign that Democrats can pursue its duties while simultaneously seeking to hold Donald Trump responsible for his actions; i.e. acting as a co-equal branch of government. Nonetheless, the new trade act and the so-called “Phase One” of the new trade deal with China will take months, if not years to undo the effects of Trump’s trade war and aggressive use of tariffs.
Yesterday, Alphabet Inc., the corporate umbrella that includes Google, but also a constellation of smaller companies with different goals such as Loon (wireless internet provided by balloons), Waymo (self-driving cars), Verily (health sciences), Wing (aviation), and several others, became the next American corporation to surpass $1 trillion in market cap value. Even though Google switched from being the sole corporate entity to one of the constituents of Alphabet, it is still common to refer to Google as the entire company. Google is known for its indulgent approach to its employees; at its weekly all-hands meeting the company’s CEO will answer any five questions put forth by employees so long as they receive enough votes from other Googlers. The company is known also for its flat approach to hierarchies: low-level employees are empowered to bring up issues as much as high-level employees and executives are. But this approach, this free flow of ideas, also allows for discontent to spread wide and fast. This account from Wire about the past three years of Google shows what happens when corporate culture reaches what appears to be an almost untenable scale.
In December 1981, Atlantic published a piece by columnist William Greider following David Stockman, a Republican congressman from Michigan who became Ronald Reagan’s first Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Stockman, an acolyte of small-government, pro-business approach which involved increasing efficiency and cutting spending, was tasked in December 1980 by the then President-elect, with cutting the federal budget while also increasing defense spending to record levels and not touching federal entitlement programs in the process. Over the thousands of words, Greider follows Stockman as he maintains his optimism that he could meet these audacious, if seemingly impossible, goals in the spring of 1981, through months of intense budget negotiations with members of Congress. By the fall of 1981, Greider is documenting a resilient and yet increasingly defeated version of Stockman who let slip a number of quotes to Greider—including a not-so-veiled criticism of the President’s “trickle down” economics by saying “none of us really understand what is going on with all these numbers”—which ultimately caused Stockman’s fall as OMB director towards the end of Reagan’s first term. This is long, but it captures the harsh reality of what occurs when economic idealism not anchored in any realistic tenets is exposed to the nature of government spending.
Louisiana calls itself “Sportsman’s Paradise” on its state license plates (or at least they used to, not sure if they still do). This is in reference to the fact that the state, particularly its south coast, is criss-crossed, riven, and bisected by sinuous waterways, wetlands, and swamplands created by the Mississippi River and its tributaries in the naturally low-lying land next to the Gulf of Mexico. The communities of coastal Louisiana were meant to be benefitted by decades of projects by the Army Corps of Engineers, projects which built levees, diverted water flows, and sought to protect the fragile patchwork of wetlands and spits of dry land in the parishes south of New Orleans. Instead, these flood control efforts have served only to funnel land-creating silt from the Mississippi River directly out into the Gulf of Mexico, thereby accelerating the loss of land along the coast. This piece in the New Yorker looks at the efforts to reverse this trend—which, though not described this year, give the appearance of putting a ban aid on a gunshot wound—and whether the unique culture of southern Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans itself, can survive.
Lastly, the U.S. commercial aviation market today is dominated by the three legacy carries—American, Delta, and United—along with the original LCC (“Low Cost Carrier” in the parlance of the industry) Southwest. To be sure, there are a number of other carries seeking to carve out their own niche—Spirit and Allegiant come to mind, as well as Frontier which itself was reborn out of the ashes of its namesake forebear—but there is not the polyglot of different national and regional airlines that existed in the decades leading up to the 1990s. Indeed, two of the biggest airlines in the world—Pan American and Transworld or TWA—of the 1970s, ceased to exist by the 1990s. This is an examination of the various American airlines that once graced the skies, occasionally in garish livery, showed great promise, but either due to corporate intrigue or economic pressure, ceased operations.
 Welcome to the weekend.
