Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (dir. Paul Briganti).
SNL's Gen Z sketch comedy trio breaks out in their own feature-length adventure for an amusing but insubstantial buddy movie co-starring Conan O'Brien. Based around a lot of self-deprecating humour about the cast's perceived lack of masculinity, there's an abundance of jokes about reluctantly moving into adulthood as Ben and John start to grow up, look ahead, and Martin feels left behind as a manchild who's lost reliving his youth. How the treasure map plotline unfolds feels like an extended sketch with a series of oddball gags and a messy fight sequence ending.

"Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain"
The one-note comedy “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” is sloppily written, poorly acted, and lacks any semblance of an inspired comedic spark. The premise may be decent, but the large amount of failed and unfunny attempts at humor and the single-minded approach to director Paul Briganti‘s storytelling sink this one before it ever has much of a chance. Narrated by John…

BEST MOVIES OF 2023
2023 was a tough year for movie fans. In some ways it was good in that we had directors who took chances on a large scale, i.e. Christopher Nolan. But in other ways, fans of physical media and collecting movies like me had some major setbacks like Netflix discontinuing their DVD by mail service and then Best Buy announcing they’d discontinue physical movies as well. I completely get that most people prefer the convenience of streaming, but with physical media you have ownership of that movie that’s going to come and go from a platform. The biggest surprise message of a movie I saw in 2023 was Leave the World Behind. While it had a lot to say about society, technology and more, the most powerful statement the film made was the importance of physical media. Wow! A movie made by Netflix said this? The company that put video stores out of business in the 00s and discontinued their DVD mail service made this statement? But I digress. The biggest grossing movie of 2023 was Barbie. Here are my picks:
Honorable Mentions:
Showing Up Kelly Reichart
Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain  Paul Briganti
Joy Ride  Adele Lim
Asteroid City Wes Anderson
Creed III  Michael B. Jordan
10. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse  Joaquim Dos Santos / Kemp Powers / Justin K. Thompson
Tie. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One  Christopher McQuarrie
9. You Hurt My Feelings Nicole Holofcener
8. May December Todd Haynes
7. Barbie  Greta Gerwig
6. Killers of the Flower Moon Martin Scorsese
5. Past Lives  Celine Song
Tumblr media
Told over the course of 24 years, Celine Song made a remarkable directorial film debut about the way that people change, evolve, process and move on!
4. Air Ben Affleck
Tumblr media
The story of Air Jordans is a sports movie without the sports, where sales and marketing are more competitive than professional sports and even as you know the ending you’re fully engaged the whole time!
3. Flora and Son  John Carney
Tumblr media
Much like Carney’s other films about how music can bring people together, here it works its charm with a mother and son bonding through music and it had so much to say about how people connect in the age of zoom!
2. Oppenheimer  Christopher Nolan
Tumblr media
J. Robert Oppenheimer’s creation of the atomic bomb is a powerhouse biopic of visual spectacle and internalized drama! Nolan’s sheer cinematic ambition is on full display!
The Holdovers  Alexander Payne
Tumblr media
Payne’s 1970s New England boarding school dramedy was not just the best of the year, it is sure to get better at each holiday viewing. Payne’s mastery of combining comedy and tragedy is topnotch and here he’s wearing his Hal Ashby influence on his sleeve, but beyond the phenomenal cast, it’s reuniting with Sideways star Paul Giamatti that truly made this the movie event of the year to see one of the great actor-director relationships of this century!

A phone call from Fox News’ own lawyer is at the center of Tucker Carlson’s case against the embattled network, two sources familiar with the call have confirmed to the Daily Caller.
Fox News’ Chief Legal Counsel Viet Dinh allegedly called a close associate of Carlson’s on May 3 asking to have a message relayed to Carlson. Dinh expressed regret at how the previous week had played out in the media, according to two sources, reassuring Carlson’s camp that Fox News had “not authorized” the leaks that led to several negative headlines. Sources say Dinh also relayed that the head of Fox News PR, Irena Briganti, had been warned she would be “fired” if she were caught leaking. Critically, he also confessed, according to the sources, that the network’s leaders suspected a member of the board of directors had been speaking to the press about Tucker without authorization.
Carlson’s camp suspected either former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan or Anne Dias, a wealthy hedge fund manager, according to a source. Both were appointed to Fox’s board in March of 2019. Carlson’s inner circle has since ruled out Ryan, according to sources, and now believes it was Dias who talked to the press.
Carlson’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, told the Daily Caller the leaks amounted to a “smear campaign.”
“It strains credulity that, immediately after agreeing to pay almost $780 million to settle serious allegations of misconduct that a member of Fox’s Board of Directors would be engaging in an attempted smear campaign by illegally leaking information about Tucker Carlson,” Freedman said. “However, we have to trust that it is true when the Chief Legal Officer informs Tucker that he believes it to be the case.”

Obvious Child (2014)
Tumblr media
Being in your twenties is hard enough, but between struggling to make rent and dealing with her recent break up, Donna’s now faced with an even bigger reality check. On stage doing stand up, she’s an open book, but when she finds out she’s pregnant she has to open up to a more difficult crowd. Obvious Child tells a story that’ll hit home for so many women while making its audience laugh along the way.
Obvious Child is a honest look into what it’s like to be a woman today and for that I’m so grateful. Donna (Jenny Slate) reminds me of myself, she’s silly, honest, and just trying to navigate her way in life. While the movie’s sometimes vulgar humor isn’t for everyone, it reminded me of how real people talk. Her two friends, Nellie (Gaby Hoffmann) and Ryan (Paul Briganti), love and would do anything for her, resembling friends I’m sure we all have. All this combined with Donna dealing with her unwanted pregnancy makes for a very relatable and heartfelt movie. You know all the characters because you know them in real life and you know the story because either you or someone you know has gone through at least a variation of it.
All the characters have great chemistry but when Donna and Max (Jake Lacey) are on screen is when the sparks fly! I thought they were a great couple, even though I would have liked Max to be less funny seeing as he’s not a comedian. Some people might also complain that Max is portrayed as the perfect man (I know I rolled my eyes at times), but it’s a romcom, what do you expect? It was a sweet movie without hitting you over the head with romance. Donna and Max have a very silly relationship from the first drunken night they met and they keep that same fun vibe throughout the movie. I know romantic comedy’s are best watched when it’s almost Valentines day (especially since this movie takes place around V-Day), Obvious Child can be enjoyed no matter the calendar date.
I read a few reviews that slam this movie for its take on abortion saying the movie “glamorized” it and I just want to take some time to rant about how wrong they are. For this reason I’m giving you a minor **Spoiler Alert**. Ok, where to start.. First of all, just because Donna knew she wanted to have an abortion doesn’t mean the decision was “nonchalant.” The idea of having an unwanted pregnancy is something most, if not all, women think about, so it’s not unrealistic that she didn’t already have her mind made up on what she wants. She emotionally isn’t ready to have a child nor is she financially able to take care of her pregnant body. Are there scenes where she’s making light of it? Yes, because she’s a comedian and using comedy as coping tool is very common. However, we also see Donna struggling to tell others about her decision. Abortion is a very touchy topic and she knows that she might be met with very strong differing opinions. But, no matter how scared she is, she tells people anyway. She has conversations about it Donna didn’t face any serious negative repercussions for having an abortion, but that’s because she had a support system by her side. If all this makes Obvious Child seem like a “propaganda” film, who am I to tell you what to think. I’d still encourage you to see the movie because this might be a perspective you’re unfamiliar with. **Spoiler Alert Over**.
Currently on Netflix, Obvious Child was a very entertaining movie. It made me laugh and was definitely relatable, I just don’t know how memorable it’ll be. I’m not a huge romance genre fan, but the jokes and Jenny Slate made it all worth watching. Watch it with a significant other or with your close friends, you’ll have a fun time.
I give Obvious Child a seven out of ten!
