Still 1 Analysis
This one is pretty straight forward in my opinion.  Penelope is in her bedroom, the wallpaper, curtains/drapes, and paneling are the same:
Tumblr media
She is already dressed and ready for a ball as to me the dress definitely reads as evening/ball gown.  This is also the same dress, jewelry, hairstyle as in still 4.
Now what I could over analyze is where Penelope’s window faces, but I will say for various reasons I believe Penelope’s window is at the front of the Featherington house and overlooks Grosvenor Square and the Bridgerton’s.  I think these are her windows:
Tumblr media
This is maybe not all that interesting but what I took note of is that to me, it seems like she sits at this window a lot as she has a new piece of furniture set in front of the window.  This bench/chair was not here before, so I imagine she maybe looks at the Bridgerton’s frequently while contemplating her previous choices or perhaps spying as she no longer has regular access to them via Eloise (or both!).
I also think that at this point Lady Danbury’s ball has taken place (as this still is also from episode 2 and Lady Danbury's balls have happened in episode one of each of the previous seasons), and maybe Penelope already tried and “failed spectacularly” (as stated in the synopsis) at flirting with a potential suitor and is anxious about the next ball.  Maybe she already had a confrontation with Eloise and her new “unlikely” friend (who I think is Cressida*).  So many possibilities!
*I think Eloise’s unlikely new friend is Cressida for two reasons.  In episode 1 of season 2, Cressida tries to befriend Eloise and this is where Cressida calls Penelope an insipid wallflower.  This of course, is the same insult Eloise uses against Pen during their conflict at the end of episode 8 of season 2.  To me the befriending attempt and book-ended insult kind of foreshadows a possible Cressida/Eloise friendship.

Baby Bridgerton meet cute au
Today on another episode of Bridgerton fics I really want to read. But can't write because I lack both the time and the creativity to do them justice
Baby Bridgerton meet Cute au
Saphne:
Young stuttering Eton aged Simon Basset meeting Anthony's little sister on a visit to the Bridgerton home and immediately being pulled into a game of house by Anthony's tallest little sister. Who forces him to play husband and she will be the wife and all her siblings now are their kids so they must listen to her of course. Because she's the mom. And him the dad. Simon stutters the whole time but leaves little Daphne with the most organized pretend household he can manage before running off to find Anthony to ask to come over more often
Kanthony:
Young 10 yo Anthony finding a scared toddler Kate afraid of storms, asking him to help her find her papa and pretty Miss Mary in Hyde Park. Because she can't find them and its started to rain and she's scared. And Anthony being the gallant kid he is, shelters the little girl from the rain with his coat under a tree, and returns her to her father as soon as he hears voices looking for her. The day after he meets her, he finds out that the little girl Kate, is the daughter of the man who just ran off with the season's diamond. He wonders if he'll ever see her again
Benophie:
Benedict met Sophie in the theater when Sophie was four, since her mother was an actress and Sophie would have been trained to appear on stage. Benedict saw little Sophie play a little Christmas angel in a opera and immediately asked his father if they could meet the actors, just so he could give the little angel girl a flower and tell her she was pretty. Sadly Sophie's mother died not soon after and rather than see the little girl starve, grandmother left her at the doorstep of the Earl of Gunningworth. But she never forgot the dream of the nice boy in the theater who once called her pretty
Polin
The first time Colin met newborn Penelope with her red hair and Rosy cheeks, he wanted to take her home with him and share with her his favorite cake and biscuits. Penelope would cry if Colin was too far from her cradle and Colin declared to all sundry that baby Penelope was "his Pen" for almost all the time it took Penelope to learn how to talk and say it back. Even if adults tried to convince him that Penelope wasn't "one of his" thinking he was confused about his many siblings growing in number. Colin remained insistent for most of Penelope's early years, that Penelope was 'his' Pen the way he was 'my Colin' for her. they only outgrew the habit after he left for school and made more friends his age. Still Penelope never forgot that he was 'her Colin'. Even if Colin did as they grew older. (or maybe he's always been sure she's 'his' Pen too)
Philoise
Their first time meeting was on one of young Phillip's visits to London with his father. Little Eloise had snuck out behind her parents back to a particularly busy bookshop and happened to see an older boy, buy the exact same book that little Eloise had been eying for ages. So of course like any Viscount baby sis...She threw a tantrum. Phillip was terrified of the crying girl who kept accusing him of stealing her book, but he wanted to keep the book, so he just, found something else to give her, shaved ice? did she want shaved ice? he got it for her, maybe a toy, yes, little girls liked toys, here's a toy, just don't cry, don't cry. By the time Edmund found Eloise again, she was grinning, sitting atop of veritable mountain of trinkets, eating shaved ice, with a devoted young boy profusely apologizing to her. Phillip went home with his book and every time he read it, he remembered fondly the cute little tantrum thrower who warped him around his finger that day in Mayfair. While Eloise never quite forgot that moment either.
---
guys you should write this, I want to read it!!

Bridgerton Rewatch S1E1 - Diamond of the First Water (Part 2)
Here's part 2 of the S1E1 Rewatch
Something I noticed is that Eloise has a lot of sympathy for Daphne when it comes to the whole Berbrooke thing. She tries to stay with Daphne when he’s the only one who calls on her. In general, they’re a lot closer here than they are once Berbrooke is out of the picture.
Thinking back on it and watching the show again, Pen is the only one who could have ever been Lady Whistledown. Given the derision and abuse she’s been through by the entire ton, especially her own mother, she’s a teenager who’s lashing out. She’s an afterthought to everyone except Colin and Eloise.
Speaking of Colin and Penelope, he has always thought highly of her. When he’s leaving the Featheringtons after calling on Marina, Pen is the only one he says goodbye to. He doesn’t even bid Marina farewell; it’s just Pen.
Daphne and Eloise have very similar views on their place in the world. Daphne does not like that marriage is her only option. She has just made her peace with it.
Lady Whistledown’s dig at Marina’s “pretty little slippered feet” was so obviously Pen, I don’t know how anyone thought it wasn’t her.
The Queen’s dismissal of Daphne is a good early indicator of how much she cares about LWD’s opinion.
I need more Violet/Lady Danbury scheming. They’re both so clever, the matchmaking worked wonders.
This next note says “Anthony shut the fuck up challenge.” Again, no idea what that’s in reference to but it’s applicable to any scene he’s in.
So they plant a Cressida/Colin dynamic really early on of her wanting to be with him. Not much on this here, I’m just looking forward to seeing how that plays out in season 3.
What drives me crazy is that Colin DOES NOT LET GO OF PEN’S HAND when the music stops. They aren’t dancing anymore but Colin is still holding Pen’s hand. Idiots in love at its finest.
Not gonna lie, those lights are sick.
Season 1 Anthony has 2 modes: pompous idiot or callous asshole. He manages to be both when he tells Daphne that he promised her to Berbrooke.
Quick Marina sidebar - first, I couldn’t imagine just having to bleed through on my period. That sounds like hell. Second, it would never happen but I would love if Marina slapped Lady F back. Full on “They Call Me Mr. Tibbs!” action.
Back to Daphne, we’re at the attempted assault scene. Something that I noticed this time around is that Berbrooke is pissed at Daphne because, to him, she thinks she’s better than him. The thing is, she is technically higher class than he is. He comes from a barony; she’s the daughter of a viscount. In a purely hierarchical sense, she is better than him. She comes from a better family. And I know that there’s the gender politics involved here but I’m choosing to ignore them because they are stupid.
I’ve watched this show several times. Daphne punching Berbrooke in the face will always be satisfying as fuck.
I’d like to take this bullet point to say that Simon is iconic. His dialogue is so well-written. Love it.
End of episode thoughts: This is a really well-done pilot. It marries romance, drama, and comedy amazingly. I’m looking forward to seeing what else I find on a closer inspection of the series.
Thanks for going on this journey with me. S1E2 will be up tomorrow? Maybe? It depends on how busy I am with grad school.
Have a great day!

Gothic!Pen just oozes confidence. I love it.
She's not married yet simply because she refuses to accept anyone less than what she deserves. And nobody in the Ton was truly aware of her dark and alluring charms until she decided she was ready to finally put more effort in looking for a husband.
Anon asked: I love the Addams Featherington family au idea! I love how Portia seems more supportive and laid back. I can see Penelope just going for a walk at night in the dangerous part of London to deliver her latest issue of Whistledown, poisoned knives at her side. But lord the fit Colin has when he follows her one night, and she’s just so chill about it. Oh would his temper come out.
Penelope is still her generation's wall flower, but this time it's because she's bored by the men of the ton. None of them bring any passion that her family desires. Penelope has more fun gathering gossip for Lady Whistledown.
The only one of her sisters that has married thus far is Phillipa who found a passionate man in Mr. Finch. Though his passion laid in cheeses, but he won their mama over when he brought manchego curado and viejo as a courting gift.
Of course she still loves Colin and should he ask she might marry him but she has yet to see any real passion from him. If only she fell in love with Anthony or Benedict, she's seen passion from them. Eloise too. Maybe it skips every third sibling? Francesca is pretty mild mannered.
A marriage without passion or love? Penelope was at a conundrum. Was it selfish for her to want both in her marriage?
She was still debating this as she walked into the church. There was a last minute edit she wanted to add to the next column and she unfortunately didn't have time to make her way down to the print shop tomorrow. She had tea with Gen she absolutely could not miss.
Letter in place, Penelope turns to leave, only to see the man she was just thinking about, half hidden in the shadows, and stalking towards her.
"Co-Col-"
"That would be Colin," Colin said, now standing in front of Penelope.
Penelope looked everywhere but the pew she left her note. It would do her no good to lead him to it. She settles her gaze just over his shoulder. "What are you doing here?"
"I could very well ask you the same thing," Colin shot back. "Your family was never the church type."
"Well not during mass we don't, all the best ghosts come out during confession."
"Penelope!" Colin exclaimed.
There was a change in Colin's tone of voice that caused Penelope to look directly at him. This was new. For once Colin did not have his charmer's smile on. He was staring her down, his mouth set in a frown, eyebrows arched inward, and his arms crossed. His body screamed angry, but his eyes also showed a hint of fear.
Penelope was fascinated. Gone was the man with a silver tongue, in front of her was now just raw emotion.
Penelope glanced away.
Damn it, she accidentally glanced at the pew where her note was hidden.
"You know I'm suddenly developing a taste for prayer."
Penelope raised her eyebrow. "Prayer?"
"Yes, but not for me. For you."
"Me?"
"Yes, because prayer is the only thing that is going to save you!"
With that Colin dove for the pew and her note. Successfully grabbing it and holding it above both of their heads.
"Colin no!" Penelope exclaimed. One hand gripping his arm, trying to pull it down, while the other is reaching for her note. "That's my note! It's a secret!"
Honestly how rude can he be opening up something that doesn't belong to him?
"A secret worth risking your life?"
Penelope debated stabbing him with one of her knives, but sadly she doubts he has the poison tolerance that she and her sisters do.
Colin ripped open her letter. Penelope ran out of the church. She had to examine herself, while she was not too happy about him ripping open her private correspondence like that this new side of him has piqued her interest.
They argued in the carriage. He was confusing her. One minute he is angry, the next worried for her and her secret of being Lady Whistledown, then he's back to angry when Penelope says she is proud of her accomplishments.
"I'm proud of what I've done, of the business my passion has built! I do not expect you who runs and does not even feel passion to understand," Penelope bites back.
Colin grew silent at that. "You think I don't feel passion?"
"You are a silver-tongued Colin," Penelope said. "A snake charmer. While I admire that, it does not breed passion."
Penelope isn't sure who kissed who. All she can feel is Colin lips on her lips, her neck, her breasts. Her hands running through his hair, and then under his shirt scraping down his back.
Was this the passion her mother said to find in a match? This all-encompassing fire that sings through her body that grows with every new touch she or Colin make to one another.
They stop in front of her house. Colin is insistent on coming inside with her. Penelope said if her family sees her she can just tell them she was wandering the graveyards again looking for new names. It's not the first time one of the ghosts tripped her.
Colin, already out of the carriage, reaches for her hand.
"For god's sake Penelope are you going to marry me or not?"
Well Penelope did say if Colin asked she would consider it. Maybe she can get both passion and love in the same marriage.

I feel like this fanbase needs to realize that ALL of these characters are grey and because of your own set of morals, biases, and life experiences you may side with one character in conflict over the other.
I’m the oldest sibling who’s been parentified so Anthony and Kate are right up my alley…while characters like Pen, Edwina, and Eloise might get on my nerves from time to time. THATS MY BIAS.
Moving on:
What I can’t stand is the fact that people act like certain characters shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions. (Looking at you show) coughs Penelope coughs
The show does feel like with its poor writing that it picks and chooses favorites amongst the cast and I feel like it’s backfiring in their face currently. The writing is very much being called out and people have made SOME points.
What’s your opinion on why people don’t like Edwina?
For me personally I had problems with Edwina… she’s not this major villain that people make her out to be but I do think some people have points with their dislike of the character. I chalk this up to writing mainly.
Kate made some major mistakes as well which is why I understand why people would also have some issues with her.
ANTHONY YOU NEEDED TO SAY SORRY TO BOTH OF THESE WOMEN…YUP I SAID WHAT I SAID. And you are definitely at fault here I didn’t forget about you 🙄😂I am sorry about your trauma though and I still think you’re a good person you just made mistakes.
I think why Edwina gets picked apart so much is because the show doesn’t fully acknowledge her faults. I BLAME THE WRITING. The petty reason for disliking Edwina is people were aggravated with how she stood in the way of Kanthony…as a Kanthony fan I’m going to need people to be honest about that there’s some internalized misogyny somewhere in there. BUT it’s also not fair to say that ANY criticism of Edwina is internalized misogyny.
I really love that line where she said to Kate that she didn’t like the people they were playing and they made up in the end.
I think they needed to write more for the Sharmas, because then we would’ve fleshed out all three of these women and the discourse would’ve been little to nothing. Wasting time on that dumbass Featherington plotline ultimately disservices making these 3 WOC on the show 3D with their positives and their negatives.
Like I said though characters from Anthony all the way to the ring fitter in ep5 are flawed. Not one of these people are completely perfect and that’s ok.
I think you summed up my thoughts fairly well. In terms of power differentials, Anthony is advantaged far more than either Edwina or Kate, and he should have done better by both of them. Obviously this is HR and they're expected to fuck up, but I can't stand the fanon idea that Anthony's behavior can solely be blamed on daddy issues, and these same people rip apart Edwina for being a brat or some bs (like, this girl found out her almost-husband wanted to fuck her sister! she reacted pretty well all things considering). I blame the writers for writing the characters the way they did (especially the development of Mary, Kate, and Edwina), but also, we do need to recognize that none of them are like, perfect.

OK. So let me start off by saying Hi and I'm pretty new to tumblr and definitely have not learned how to properly # so I figure I would write you. I found you via AOO and I LOVE Seducing Mr. Bridgerton!
Since joining Tumblr I have discovered how intense people can be over examining Polin and their interactions and I find it fascinating! Now I've started looking for things as well and I'm not sure if they have been noticed/mentioned or not, but I had to share them with someone would understand my plight.
So please indulge me as I list them here for you in no particular order. (And again these may have been mentioned previously and I haven't seen reference to them.)
(This has been mentioned before, BUT) if you look in the background of the swan there is indeed a brown duck behind it and a quacking sound. Just gotta defend Colin on that one.
When playing Pall Mall, both Colin and Eloise are using mallets that are shades of yellow (Colin-light, Eloise-dark).
If you watch the scene where Pen runs down in her green dress to meet Eloise and Colin at Aubrey Hall you can see Fike behind her in the distance leisurely strolling and looking at them.
(I just noticed this after watching the Everybody Loves Me Video (Colincentric) for the umpteenth time that when Colin visits Marina there are in a Yellow room. I mean come on!
Thanks for listening! I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but if I do, fear not, I will dutifully be back!
Well, let me start off by saying: HELLOOOO!! WELCOME TO TUMBLR!! Thank you for supporting SMB! It always brings me joy to hear from readers.
Here’s the thing: It is really rare for me to start a show or movie without knowing anything about it. But that’s what happened with Bridgerton. I’d known nothing about the books, or what it was about. It was a show I started on a whim because my sister hyped it up.
But then, Once I watched it, Eloise had me entertained, Benedict had me charmed but POLIN left me NEEDING to know their fate. I didn’t cave and read the books until S2. *Confession: I haven’t read books 1-3. Only books 4-6*
In saying that, when I read the books and started writing SMB, I decided I wouldn’t re-watch the seasons to avoid show bias influencing SMB. I only re-watch scenes via fanvids and TikTok hehe.
So everything you’ve listed is fascinating, and kudos to the show for being that detailed.
You’re very welcome to keep sending me your observations, who knows what ideas or inspirations they might prompt for me :)

I'm pretty sure there's a interview with CVD where he said he purposely had Francesca absent in season 1 because she spends a lot of time in the other Bridgerton books off screen. So unless I'm mistaken it's more likely Ruby did that movie because she didn't need to be on set that much for season 1.
Of course he did, listen I trusted him for a while thinking Shonda had him at gunpoint or something but after what he said about Eddie not attending the wedding with this whole chest, I take his words with a grain of salt again.
That being said he might have used that as an excuse to make up for Ruby doing her movie and not being available for the days they needed her (See: the full family shots and scenes) It could be a mix of both - that she did the movie cos of little screen time or they gave her little screen time cos she booked the movie; as they say the truth is always somewhere in between.
I just wish they gave her more substantial roles in S1 and 2, they could have easily attached her to Eloise since in book canon they are super close.
She and Eloise were the closest of all the Bridgertons in age - exactly one year apart. Francesca would have given her life for Eloise, of course, and there was certainly no other woman who knew more of her secrets and inner thoughts. - When He Was Wicked
I got tired looking for this quote and it wasn’t coming up on Goodreads online but here is the post I found it from. Not only were they super alike in features - hello Simon literally mistakes them for twins at his first family dinner - but they were literally the closest in age and bond!
As much as I love El/Ben my queer sibs, show me this relationship!! It has SO much potential and while I think El’s LW hunting in S1 was stupid and a waste of her time, it would have been so funny if Fran went along with her and immediately figured it out. Then she just waits for El to put together the pieces.  This is an iconic dynamic worth exploring in the show and fics because JQ didn’t nearly give us enough.
In S2, instead of hunting for LW cos they solved it and Pen is in jail now for Marina now, they just explore the town area and bump into Theodora who gets them some books on feminism of the time and helps expands their minds. Shoutout to @hptriviachamp for talking to me about this and I can direct you to her for more info but I imagine Madames De Gouges & De Stael, and Wollenscraft's work would be amongst those books! They had all the feminist takes of the era and also Madame De Steael was in London in 1813 to 1814 so they couldn't have sought her out! All of this according to Triv so please thank her for the info!
Anyways CVD can be a liar 90% of the time and I wouldn't trust him as far as I throw him and this is how we could have gotten more Frannie screen time!

So my dad (and I) finished both seasons of Bridgerton yesterday. Quite amazingly, it took him only two days. So, one season a day. Anyway, here's what he thinks about all the siblings:
Anthony: "He was a huge asshole in season 1 but he grew up into a good kid in season 2. I like him. He's a good egg. Find yourself a man like that, or I'm not gonna give you my blessing... Another thing, I think he's better looking than the Duke."
Benedict: "He looks a lot like Timothy Hutton. And Clive Owen. Both my favourites. I guess I'm a bit bias when I say he's my favourite. But he IS an interesting character. Kinda remind me of you, if you were over 6 feet tall."
Colin: "Hm... I can't say much about him because he wasn't around much. But I'll admit, because of his puppy love for Marina, and he's treatment toward Pen, he's not my favourite Bridgerton brother at the moment."
Daphne: "I'm sorry but God, I find her so annoying. She's really very pretty though, I'll give her that. And I guess she redeemed herself in season 2, because she wasn't as annoying as before."
Eloise: "Good kid. Perfect role model for a strong, independent young woman who needs no man. Another controversial opinion, I've always thought she's prettier than Daphne. So definitely my favourite Bridgerton sister."
Francesca: "Unfortunately, we saw her even less than the rest of her siblings. So, I can't say anything about her. So far, she seems like a good kid."
Gregory: "Honestly, the kid reminds me a lot of your uncle, my little brother. Cheeky little brat. I really hope he'll turn up even better than his dumbass brothers."
Hyacinth: "Such a sweet kid. A lot like you and your sister when you were her age. And yes, this is a both a compliment and a critic on how you and your sister were sooo annoying. Still are, actually."
BONUS, the new addition to the Bridgerton family:
Simon: "I can't stand him. I absolutely hated how indecisive he was. And no; this has nothing to do with him being Henry Cavill's competition for the role of James Bond."
Kate: "Perfection. She's almost as mean as your mum. She'd have been my favourite Bridgerton if she'd been born into the family instead of married into it, and if there was no Eloise."

series masterlist
Tumblr media
You awoke startled, sweaty, and with tears streaming down your face. It had been from a nightmare, of your first season’s debut. You knew that things could not go as horribly wrong that night did, yet, you were afraid deep down it might.
You could never forget the piercing scream that rang through your body as you watched helplessly, your worst unknown nightmare becoming real in front of you, and being able to do nothing for your parents.
After sitting in your bed for what seemed like hours, you decided to get dressed at the start making a list of what you had to do in haste to get ready for the season’s rush.
There was so much to do and so little time, so you knew one worry could be put at ease if you planned it all out. At least then your mind would hopefully quiet down the thoughts in your head.
Tumblr media
Sitting near the window with it open, you watched the sunrise, wondering how your dear William was doing. You had left hastily, not even with a goodbye to him. It was too painful to be in Grosvenor square where all your fondest memories had been with your deceased parents. He was of course in those fond memories, yet it was too painful as you saw your father in him, and the man he became because of your father being a parental figure to him.
You wondered how he was handling being the earl, especially without the guidance or help of anyone. Especially since your presence is missing. You wrote to him all the time, yet he had no return address to send it to so you knew not much of how your dearest sibling was doing.
You knew not much of duty of being a man and running an estate and the burden weighed on society of being an earl, yet you knew the pressures and gossip and betrayal all too much so you knew it could not have been easy.
You only wished as much that you could have stayed for William, yet you knew your body would not let you stay as the fear would crawl into your bones, rotting you into some sort of insane spinster.
You stretched your body out after sitting for too long on the uncomfortable chair, deciding it was time to head on out- “the earlier the better”- you thought.
As soon as you stepped out into the hall you had turned, and collided with a strong torso, almost falling to the ground. Strong arms had caught you before you took a nasty spill.
“Pardon me-” you whispered quietly, as you then realized the close proximity of you and the man that had caught you, his face very close to your own.
He looked disheveled slightly, with his golden locks out of place slightly, and a small amount of dusting of freckles that adorned his face. His icy blue eyes had been staring into yours, almost too cold to even look into, yet you felt a sense of curiosity to capture the color of them in your mind. You also had noticed the closeness of your bodies in this very moment, almost too scandalous to even think of in society’s ton.
“Apologies, Miss.,” he said with a slightly crooked smile that could make any woman melt at this moment.
He helped you regain your balance on your own two feet, before heading towards the stairs, giving you a lopsided smile again, nodding at you, and went downstairs.
You were almost too stunned to move from the interaction. You had never been as close as that to a man in your life. It gave you a small chill down your spine, even thinking about him, the mystery man.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when your maid, Lucy, was walking out of the adjacent room to yours.
“Madam, shall I fetch the carriage?” she asks you politely, suddenly snapping you out of your entranced state.
“Yes, we should get going.”
Tumblr media
Arriving at the Bridgeton home was, interesting to say the least, in a good way. It had been around noon, after your stop at the modiste, picking up dresses for the most -well- dreaded season, and you had been welcomed by most of the Bridgerton ladies in the drawing-room, embraced by Violet, asking for your time heading to their home. It was quite a shock as the chaos yet love could be felt in the room, as whom you were assuming the two youngest were arguing of some hair ribbon, and two of the other elder brothers of Daphne’s were in some heated debate about god knows what, and one sister was writing in a journal of some sort as the other played the pianoforte.
“Welcome dear, to our home. I apologize in advance for the chaos, we are getting ready for Elosie’s first season, and our masquerade ball.”
“No need to apologize, Lady Bridgerton. Thank you for letting me stay until William gets in tomorrow. I just couldn’t stay in the house alone.”
“Please call me Violet! And any friend of my family is welcome here. Children, This is Lady Y/L/N.”
“If I am to call you Violet I insist you all call me Y/n” she smiles warmly towards you, “Eloise, could you please show Y/n to her room, I’m sure she is but tired from her journey.”
She comes out of her trance of writing responding to her mother, “Of course Mama.”
As you walk out of the drawing-room with her she looks as if she’s in deep thought.
“I have so many questions to ask of you! How were you able to travel? I only thought men such as my brother could do so, yet here you are!”
“Well when my parents passed, I just- well, couldn’t stay here, so I ventured off with what my bro- erm, cousin, William had given to me. I went to visit some other cousins in France and had gone off to other parts of Europe. It was better than I had ever imagined. But now my duty is to my family, and the adventure has stopped, for now at least.”
You had stopped walking when you reached a door, that you assumed was your room.
“That is incredible, I shall wait to ask more of you, later on of course.”
“Why don’t you show me the grounds and I shall tell you more, right now, and you can tell me about yourself, Eloise.”
Her face lit up.
“I would quite enjoy that!”
Tumblr media
After walking around their grounds, you had sat on the swings on a tree, telling her all about your adventures, and she told you about herself and even told you quite a bit about Lady Whistledown and her venture in trying to find the writer behind the pen. It had been a few hours, probably nearing dinner time, but you felt at ease with Eloise. At least, you knew you had a friend in her, that hated society almost as much as you,
“I cannot believe you went in the ocean on the beach! Most ladies here would assume it unlady-like!”
“Well, I am especially not one for lady-like behavior! Especially structured by vicious mamas!” you both laugh together at that comment. Oh how you both knew of the shocking behavior of the ton’s mamas.
“I believe we should head in now, Dinner will soon be ready, and I can only assume you are starving since we only had biscuits earlier.”
You both get up stretching your legs lightly, before heading indoors.
You felt warmth sitting at the dinner table, though not typical, it felt like they truly loved each other, and actually enjoyed each other as a family, something you had longed for from your own family, especially for William’s sake.
William had never felt like he belonged in your family, at least not fully. The warmth you and your parents tried to give to him almost did not get through his thick skull, that you had accepted him as an esteemed member of the family. You had always wondered if it was because his true father never accepted him until he needed him to fulfill his wants.
“So, Y/n are you excited for the season?” Anthony cuts through his current conversation, to include you.
“Probably something of the sort. I am quite intrigued to see how people have changed.”
“Well, most have not, especially the men.”
You laughed slightly at that.
“Well do tell whom to stay away from.” you joke.
“If you have not read the most recent lady Whistledown I assume you don’t know.”
“I’m not quite sure I’ve ever heard of a Lady Whistledown?” you question, curiosity getting to the best of you.
“Lady Whistledown is a gossip writer, under a pen name, whom, however, mentions people in the ton in name, by name in full.” Eloise cuts in.
You raise a brow quizzically. That was unheard of.
“She mentions you in her most recent edition” Hyacinth mentions, before going back to throwing peas strategically when her mother wasn’t looking at her brother Gregory.
“I’m sure Eloise has it if she hasn’t already shown you.” now you were fully intrigued. There was truly only one main thing you thought the writer could write about.
“She wrote about Lord Holland today, and might I say he is pretty dreamy.” Francesca pipes up, before earnings glare from Anthony and a kick from Eloise.
“Ow!”
“If I didn’t do it, Anthony would have and he kicks harder.”
You giggle at the family’s interactions. You only hoped you could have one as close as the Bridgertons.
“I see we are quite the entertainment for our guest tonight. I guess there’s no need for Eloise to get on the pianoforte. God knows I’m in motion for that.” Benedict adds before earning a kick from Eloise as well.
“Ow!”
“Back to the topic at hand, I’d stay away from Benedict for certain.” Eloise says, which erupts you five into a fit of giggles, before getting your end of the table gets a hard stare-down from Violet, almost as if to say ‘behave’.
“So I'm assuming other than Daphne missing, the letter C, Colin, must be the one travelling? Daph did mention he would be writing me asking about the best places to travel.”
“Yes, Colin is the one travelling, but was the letter system too obvious of whom is which?” Benedict asks in an amused manner.
“I think it’s adorable, and if you must know I find it orderly.”
“Don’t tell my mother that, or she won’t stop talking about how ‘Lady Y/n complimented her naming system’.” Benedict jokes.
You laugh before you see Eloise bringing out what you assumed was the gossip sheet. She hands it to you before you read it over, turning slightly pale at the mentions of your family so intimately.
Tumblr media
Harrison had made it into town earlier that afternoon, only to be wondering why Mama’s, and Ladies alike- married or not- had been whispering and pointing at him. On the other hand, he had been met with a warm embrace from his wonderful sister Charlotte, and loving Mother, Phil, only to be dragged by Charlotte for her to tell him to read the latest Lady Whistledown, a woman he knew he hadn’t heard of, nevertheless thought he’d fucked.
He however listened to his sister and her worry, before being shell-shocked by what was on the page.
“Charlotte what the hell is this? And who the hell wrote it?"
“Lady Whistledown is but the biggest anonymous gossip columnist, and everyone reads it. Haz what am I to do if no suitors show interest when I am eligible for marriage? What if I end up a spinster?!”
“Char, I won’t let that happen I promise you.”
Harrison was determined to make sure charlotte never had to worry. She was the most lovely of any woman on the market and he would make sure she had a shot.
Tumblr media
“Wait Osterfield, you’re saying, you’ll Woo whoever is the most desired by the queen and marry her?” Tom askes very confusedly as to what sparked this in his bestfriend.
“Yes Tom, That is my plan,” Harrison replies before taking a sip of his drink again.
The two men had reunited at the Bridgerton’s gentleman club, talking over Harrison’s not so genius plan, according to Tom.
“Do you know how many mamas loathe even the sight of you right now? Especially because of Lady Whistledown.” Harrison’s face scrunches up, cringing at that.
“Yes, I know already. But if I can just get in the good graces of Lady Whistledown, then I know any mama will turn around! maybe if I form an attachment with someone she might see that I’m serious about marrying. Don’t you have that cousin? Zendaya?”
“That’s a terrible idea, Harrison. Also, Zendaya is now going to be under my care according to my mother. She told her father, who is ill,  I’d watch out for her during the season to find her a suitable husband.”
Harrison gets a mischievous, conniving look on his face as the gears turn in his brain. “I said suitable Haz! Her father would have a heart attack if you came near her!”
“Fine, but can you at least convince her to show interest in me to the other ladies? So I can find a wife?”
Tom rolls his eyes before downing his drink mentally hating the idea, but agreeing to try for his almost brother,  even if he didn’t think he’d find a wife.

I am looking forward to seeing Penelope give Colin the cold shoulder. I'm also looking forward to Colin learning that she's Lady Whistledown?
I mean, the angst potential alone .
Like, I knew Eloise and Penelope were going to fight, I saw that a mile away but it still hurt. Their friendship breakup was the most cry inducing moment for me. So I'm wondering what will happen when Colin learns about it.
Show, give me pain.
Oh that's the only part I'm looking forward to in s3, not just the angst, but the whole Penelope getting angry pottential gives me life.
Because her best friend hurt her and the love of her life said pretty mean things about her and if the show doesn't let Penelope be angry about that. I will feel robbed. She shouldn't just be devastated, she should be pissed off.
When Colin learns that Eloise and Penelope fought the same day he said he'd never court her he's going to blame himself so bad, and I for one am here for that! yes. I love it.
But also is it wrong that I want Penelope to get angry? I mean one of my favorite parts of romacing Mr Bridgerton is that the moment Colin touched Pen's bottom line with Lady Whistledown, she was claws out.
Penelope in the books, even when she was angry at what Colin said about her, she never actually showed it. She never let Colin see her most vicious side....Until he pissed her off by ordering her to stop writing, and Penelope was like 'okay dude, kid gloves off, I'm this close to kicking you'
And Penelope who arguably has been swallowing up her anger and her mean girl bone all this time...lets him have it! and its glorious.
Just Penelope letting Colin see that she's pissed off at him, that he crossed the line by dismissing her life's work and there's a lot of insults she can take but not thins one! she's darn proud of Lady Whistledown and if he doesn't like it he can go to hell.
And Colin gets angry as well. Because he sees her point but also wants to protect her, so screw her, she can't keep doing this.
And it gets hot.
my point is that I love the fact that Colin and Penelope were at their hottest when they were both angry as hell and wanted to kill each other. Because as a couple they are always so friendly and kind and indulgent towards each other. Penelope gives Colin a pass for everything and Colin is always at the height of loving gentlemanly behavior with his Pen.
And then there's the scene in the carriage where they are both furious to the point of tearing their clothes off. I LOVE IT.
They're very good at pretending to be cute okay! Colin is super unhinged, but he doesn't show it, and Penelope can be terribly mean but she only lets it out in Lady Whistledown and its in this scene when they are both showing each other the dark side of who they really are. that it clicks how much they belong together.
I cannot stress enough how much I love angry Colin and angry Penelope. And that's the tea.

Okay I'm finally done the Bridgerton books, here's my official ranking, a guide, a best and worst aggregate, a post so I don't forget these books in a month
The good ones
These books are all great and could easily be my favorite depending on my mood
The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony and Kate) the closest Bridgeton gets to enemies to lovers, with a compelling and funny hero and heroine. Best moment? Bees baby! Their wedding night! They're obsessed with each other and they hate it! That's my jam Worst moment? Kate loses a bit of personality after she gets married, the dick literally can't be that good.
When He Was Wicked (Francesca and Michael) in love with your best friends girl! this is the hot one! Also the saddest one! Francesca is the best Bridgerton sister by a lot. Best? Michael is doing the most in this book guys, also this book made me cry? Fran, love of my life Worst: it's sad. It's not the one I would pick if I want to turn off by brain, which is not bad! But it's a consideration
Romancing Mr. Bridgeton (Colin and Penelope) proving that friends to lovers can occasionally have rights. Best? The carriage scene/trophy husband Colin/etc they are crackling. Worst? Colin sulking about Pen's success. Also stop mentioning that Penelope is thinner now I hate-
The ones that are fine
Not bad! But not great
It's in His Kiss (Hyacinth and Gareth) this books is kind of a redo of The Duke and I? Gareth has a messy family secret and needs a Bridgeton to make it better. Hyacinth is much more interesting that Daphne, there's this almost heist thing going on? It's fun Best? Just generally Hyacinth is good fun, and they've got chemistry. She wears pants at one point. Worst? This book is in offensive to the extreme, it's just kind of dull.
On the Way to the Wedding (Gregory and Lucy) le grande finale, lots of references to other books. Lucy is a nerd and Gregory has not read any of the Bridgerton books. Best? Kate is there :) Worst? BORING
The Duke and I (Daphne and Simon) le grande beginning! A kind of lackluster start but you gotta start somewhere. You can picture how pretty everything is in the show so that's a plus. Best? Fake dating got them again Worst? You know what's worst :/
The ones that are bad
I know I'm burning bridges here, this is my personal taste, but, I mean, is it surprising that these are the 2 in the show that have the most not hetro implications?
An Offer from a Gentleman (Benedict and Sophie) the Cinderella story. Sophie (imo) is the most boring heroine and Benedict lacks either Anthony's burden and angst or Colin's humor and self assurance. He's boring and a dick. Best? Violet and Sophie have a really cute mother daughter relationship, legit made me emotional. I like Cinderella too I mean I'm not heartless Worst? Benedict and Sophie have the worst sex scene in the series.
To Sir Philip, With Love (Eloise and Philip) look, Quinn seemed to want to change things up a bit after the whistledown arc concluded. Both Eloise and Francesca's books take place far from the London season (the county somewhere I don't remember for this one, Scotland for whww) dealing with heavier themes (depression and being a step parent here, miscarriage and grief in whww) both have non standard courtships even for this series. For me, when he was wicked is wholly successful, and to Sir Philip with love fails. Eloise and Philip have very little chemistry, Philip is supposed to be our manly man but not in a hot way ladies! It's not like he's a wild mountain man, he's an intellectual who just treats people poorly. Best? When the brothers come. Which says a lot about our couple tbh. I also liked benophie better here. Worst? Everything about how they treat Marina. I just hate Philip tbh.
So my ranking is 2 6 4 7 8 1 3 5 please send me all the reasons I am wrong besties

Hello it’s me again back with AMD because I am addicted:
So I had this idea that like when Francesca elopes with Micheal (even that even still happens) Edmund is like strangely cold about the whole thing. Like yes everyone is shocked and it take time, but Edmund is not just distant with Micheal but even Francesca a little. Eventually someone is like hey what’s up with you and Edmund is like
“Every time one of kids gets married it is one the happiest days of my life. Seeing their face light up and knowing they are in love… they will always be the small children I tucked into bed and kissed in the head… but I know they have grown up. I just… I liked being a big part of their wedding because it meant they still needed their old man… but Francesca didn’t need me. She doesn’t and that fine she’s grown up and that’s fine… I’m jsut a little sad that the little girl that used ti sneak into my office after bedtime doesn’t need her dad for anything anymore.”
and idk that’s just a little bit of angst that exists in my head. Also I am sorry if this in intruding on your au I just like to think about it
I had thought about each of the other siblings and how that would happen with Edmund alive and how they would go about their HEA... and this is sort of how I see it going...
Colin would still take an age to work out that Penelope was the one from him, despite the fussing and matchmaking attempts of BOTH his parents and his sisters-in-law... the whole "I will not marry penelope" fiasco happens but his father hears... and he marches Colin around to apology to Penelope and then allows him to go travelling... but he and Penelope stay in contact. When he comes back, he sees Pen in another light and the whole LW drama happens but it is Edmund Colin goes to for help... but the whole thing
Eloise was writing to Sir Phillip as was in the books, but when Marina died, Edmund also wrote to Sir Phillip, she was the daughter of one of his cousins after all... so when Eloise decides, shortly after Penelope's marriage to go find him... it's not the whole band of idiots that goes, but Edmund with his two eldest son's, mainly because Romney Hall was close to My Cottage. The Earl also assists as he knew the former Sir Crane... and didn't like him... they marry (and Phillip still helps save Charlie and literally becomes the favourite over night with Edmund and Richard)
Francesca: Francesca attempts to run away but Edmund catches her and they have a heart to heart and she stays in London and all the wicked things happen in Kilmartin House in London rather than Scotland and she agrees to marry him but they go to Kent and marry there. Edmund doesn't give his daughter away this time around, Francesca asked if Janet could. Edmund cried at the thoughtfulness of his daughter. it was a small wedding with just her parents, Helen and Janet in attendance. it is here that Edmund gets word that Eloise had gone to Gloucester...
Hyacinth: goes pretty much as it does in her book... but Edmund cries for 3 hours after Gareth leaves... Gareth also speaks to ALL of Hyacinth's brother's after speaking to Edmund to ask for permission. (Edmund punches Gareth's father in the face at the wedding reception... Richard was being held back by his son in law...)
Gregory: by the time Gregory meets Lucy... Edmund is just done with the drama and begs his youngest son, and after Kate caught the young Lord Abernathy and Miss Watson in his orangery, and he saw the way Greg was watching Lady Lucinda, he knew the dopey in love expression... but when he heard Lucy was to marry Arthur Hasbley... Edmund did not expect the drama to unfold as it did...
so when he saw his youngest son barge into the church and then the reception... he had to go home and have a stiff drink... it was the next day he had found out what occurred from an excited Hyacinth and when he sat and had a drink with Richard and Miles two days later after dealing with the drama he groaned "and here i thought Anthony and Benedict were going to be the ones to give me the biggest headache..."
He did find it rather fun to watch his son's and daughter's dealing with their children as they entered society...

Penelope/Colin: “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t leave.”
YAY SOMETHING BESIDES BRETTSEY. (Not that I don’t love them.) I’ve never written Polin before! I’m excited to play! 🙌🏻 Thank you!
How about a modern AU for this one? Just cause.
******
It all started because of the pandemic.
He’d been perfectly happy traveling. It’s not like he had anything else to occupy his time. He wasn’t particularly talented and he didn’t have any hobbies or interests. Aside from eating but he doubted his mother would approve of him becoming one of those professional hot dog eaters and he didn’t care enough for the piddly portions of fine dining to become a food critic.
The only thing that truly distracts him from his lack of drive or ambition is traveling — learning about the world and it’s many cultures.
He has journal after journal full of his discoveries and experiences. Travel is really his only love.
Which is why he’d stopped and started his studies so many times. He took a year between high school and college to backpack through Europe. Then another year after freshman year to “study abroad”, not that he actually studied. Which is why his mother forced him to come back and finish his third year stateside. After that, he’d set off traveling again. Every year he found another excuse not to come home for any longer than a month or two, allowing him to put off his final year.
It’s not as if he’s getting a degree in anything useful. He’s an English major. And it’s not as if his career isn’t already decided for him. Upon graduation he’ll be given an office at Bridgerton Family Publishing. Doing what? Well, no one knows. Not even him.
So, what’s the rush?
He’d still be gone abroad right now if not for COVID forcing him to return home. God, he hates 2020. What a waste of a year. He came home too late for the spring 2020 term so he’s spent the last several months going absolutely crazy.
He’s a man of the world who is not being allowed to go out and see it. He can’t imagine anything more cruel.
Actually, no, he takes that back. There’s one thing:
Using the time he’s forced to stay in Mayfair to discover he’s completely and stupidly in love with his little sister’s best friend.
The friend who overheard him, last time he was home for any considerable length of time, declaring to his brothers that he would never be interested in her.
Because, of course, Colin Bridgerton is a colossal jackass who doesn’t know a good thing when it’s been staring him in the face his entire life.
There’s laughter coming from the direction of the foyer. Very distinctive laughing. One high and tinkling like a pretty little bell and the other deeper and hoarser. The alto to the other’s soprano. The alto in this case is his younger sister, Eloise, and the soprano is Penelope.
The woman he should have noticed long before now.
He gets up from where he’s lounging on the sofa, mournfully watching the Travel Channel, and takes his plate full of sandwiches with him.
He finds them giggling and applying lipstick in the mirror by the front door. They look dressed to go out. Eloise in her slick tailored pant suit and intricately adorned lace top, in monochromatic lavender. And Penelope in…
Holy shit, what is that?
Apparently, it’s the instrument of his imminent death if the erratic beating of his heart is any indication. He’s going to have some sort of attack and go into cardiac arrest right here in the foyer of his childhood home.
It’s a tight forest green dress that has an off the shoulder neckline. It hugs her curves so perfectly that he thinks someone must have sewn it onto her. It shows the perfect amount of skin along her neck and shoulders, giving just a tiny glimpse of cleavage.
And she’s had a haircut since she was here yesterday. Her ginger locks now rest against her cheeks in a wavy stylish bob. She was beautiful before. He was never blind to that as some other people around Pen have proven to be, but now...
She’s absolutely stunning.
So stunning that other people will surely see what he sees. And he’s grateful for that, truly. She deserves to be seen as she is — brilliant and beautiful — but that means he’s about to have competition while trying to win her over. And he is not grateful for that.
He’s been trying to be more forward with her when they’re alone but that doesn’t happen often and he’s not sure Penelope takes him very seriously. (No one does.) She seems to always be in disbelief when he flirts with her.
“Where are you two off to?” He asks, leaning against the wall opposite the mirror.
“Double date,” Eloise says, fluffing her hair in the mirror. “Pen arranged it. She met someone extremely gorgeous at the library today.”
Penelope blushes and grins demurely. “It’s the magic of a fresh cut,” she says motioning to her new hair. “He was there with his friend and we were all scrambling for resources for our bibliographies together and he asked if I wanted to get dinner and I asked if Eloise could come. No big deal.”
“It doesn’t look as if it’s not a big deal,” Colin observes, his gaze sweeping over Penelope from head to toe.
“His father owns that new super exclusive restaurant Kate’s been begging Anthony to take her too. You know, La Table Gourmande?” Eloise explains.
“The one that told Anthony the next available reservation was in two months? That restaurant?” Colin asks, trying not to scowl.
Really, there was no need for this guy to show off. He seems a bit full of himself.
“That’s the one,” Penelope replies with a nod. “He says he can get us the Chef’s table tonight. I’ve never done anything like that before. It sounds exciting. Might be the closest I ever get to authentic French cuisine. For a while anyway.”
Okay, so now he feels like a heel for wanting to keep her from going out. He knows he’s lucky his family is so well off. It allows him to travel. Penelope’s family, while not destitute, has spent most of their surplus funds putting three daughters, soon to be a fourth, through school. In fact, if not for a distant rich aunt who died they wouldn’t even have been able to afford that.
Any money Penelope used to travel would have to be her own, and he isn’t sure how much of that she has.
“Pen,” Eloise calls, interrupting Colin’s thoughts. “Have you seen my clutch? Did I bring it down?”
“I don’t see it anywhere,” Penelope says with a shake of her head. “Did you leave it on your dresser?”
Eloise groans in irritation, turning toward the main staircase of their massive house. “I guess I did. I’ll be right back.”
Finally, they’re alone. Colin clears his throat and sets the plate of sandwiches he’d been snacking on down on the hall table. He crosses the space until he’s standing mere inches away from her.
“Don’t go out tonight. I can take you somewhere else. Somewhere better,” Colin suggests.
“Better?” Penelope asks skeptically.
He nods. “I have a friend who opened a restaurant here that I met while I was in Nice. It’s smaller than that La Table Gourmand monstrosity and not quite considered fine dining but it’s real. It’s better. It’ll be closer to actually being in France than anything in that obnoxious place.”
“I don’t see why I can’t go with Marcus tonight and then you some other time,” she tells him, lifting one perfect brow and pursing her lips.
“This guy sounds like a prick,” Colin says with a scoff. “Bragging about his father’s connections on the first date? That’s not a good sign, Pen. Trust me, I know these things. I’m a guy.”
“Maybe,” she says with a shrug, a small knowing grin on her lips. “But I think I should decide that for myself. Don’t you?”
That grin…
She knows exactly what he’s trying to do.
She’s being difficult on purpose.
“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t leave,” she challenges him, continuing to grin smugly.
Well, if that’s the game she wants to play then so be it.
“Why waste a night figuring out what I already know when you could just let me take you out instead for what, we both know, would be a better time?” Colin asks, caressing the length of Penelope’s arm with a light tender touch.
She sucks in a breath at the contact, but doesn’t show any weakness in her expression. “Yes, but going out with Marcus would be a date that might actually lead to something. What would be the purpose of ditching a real date for you instead?”
“Oh, you want it to lead to something?” He asks, a smirk growing on his face as he backs her up toward the wall.
“Y—yes,” she stammers, her grin slipping as nerves shine in her eyes.
Her back hits the wall and he brings one hand to her cheek, cupping her face and trailing his thumb along her cheekbone.
He leans down, nearly closing the distance between them but stops just short of kissing her. “Come out with me, Pen, and you can choose where it leads. I’ll give you whatever future I have, even if I have no idea what it is. You set the terms, you call the shots.”
Her eyes widen and her cheeks flush but she instinctively leans into his hand. Call him a cocky bastard, but that’s the moment he knows he’s won. The moment he knows she’ll choose him.
“I set the terms?” She asks, biting her bottom lip while she stares at his.
He nods, waiting for the moment she leans up and kisses him.
“Well, then you know what I think?” She asks, rhetorically while she rests a hand on his chest.
“Tell me,” he pleads.
She smiles wickedly and pushes him away by one step. “I think you could do with some healthy competition.”
She sidesteps him and saunters off to the front door, leaving him gaping at her like a fool.
Like a besotted, astonished, completely smitten fool.
Eloise reappears, patting Colin’s shoulder as she follows after Penelope. “Tell mom we’ll be back late.”
They leave, the door shuts, and all he can think is…
Well played, Penelope Featherington.
But the Bridgertons are famously competitive and this game is only just beginning. He’ll win her over yet.
Wait and see.

what's happening with genevieve 👀
Okay, to preface this, I could be totally wrong. The closer we get to the season, the crazier my theories get. But just in case, I'm gonna leave my answer under the cut because I do feel like it could be a spoiler spoiler.
Let me put on my detective hat:
Tumblr media
The short answer: Genevieve is Penelope's partner in crime. This isn't a Ghostface situation where they're both Whistledown, but rather, Gen is more than likely her boss or her soliciiter.
Now here's how I came to that conclusion:
When we initially got the still of Penelope and Genevieve,
Tumblr media
I assumed Pen was just using her Whistledown money to get Gen to swap out her yellow dress for... a less yellow dress. And then two new leaked stills of them together popped up from different episodes than the original still.
And then, Netflix released a tv exclusive promo centered on Whistledown. The only characters included were Penelope (who is Whistledown), Eloise (who is looking for Whistledown), the Queen (who is also looking for Whistledown), Theo (who works at Whistledown's printing shop), and Genevieve (???).
But it still doesn't end there. In the "behind the scenes" video with Claudia and Nicola, they bring up Genevieve. Claudia says, "What sort of role does Madame Delecroix play in season 2?" Nicola just looks at the camera, smiles, and says, "Huge!" Claudia then says "We can't say too much but I think people will be shocked by Madame Delacroix in season 2."
So what does all of this mean? Well, pretty much since Theo was introduced, everybody seemed to be convinced that he was the one working with Pen on Whistledown. I mean, Pen can't possibly be doing this all on her own right? Even in the books, she has a solicitor and a publisher. Plus, it would be pretty boring TV if all we saw was Pen writing in her room. She needs someone to bounce off of. But then the EW article came out and everyone realized Theo was more involved in Eloise's story. This left me confused. If it's not Theo, who could it be? When those leaked stills were released it started clicking. Theo was just a red herring for the fans. Everyone is so busy looking at Theo as Penelope's potential partner, but in reality, he's just someone who works for the mysterious Lady Whistledown.
Penelope's partner is the very person Eloise suspected was Whisltedown in season one!
Now to be clear, it's very possible that Genevieve has only just found out about Whistledown, or maybe she and Pen are together for some other reason. But I was watching 1x08 last night for my rewatch, and the scene where Eloise confronts Gen is kind of weird. If you look at it from the perspective that Genevieve knows who Whisltedown is, it makes a lot more sense.
There are a lot of layers here, but I'm gonna try and break it down. "I know why you are here, Miss Eloise. You are very smart, and you care very much about the people in your life, as you should. But you must know I have no intention of compromising anyone." In this scene, Eloise is talking to Genevieve as if Gen were Whistledown and is trying to get her to fix what she did to Colin's and the Featherington's reputation. And we as the audience are meant to be left wondering, is Genevieve interpreting what Eloise is saying correctly? Or is Genevieve interpreting Eloise's words as a way of protecting Benedict because Genevieve is sleeping with him? This question is seemingly answered with the Whistledown reveal at the end of the episode. We're left to assume the latter. But what if she's actually, specifically talking about Penelope? "You care about Penelope. I have no intention of compromising Penelope." Gen's last line only adds to that. "I believe Whisltedown is smart enough to take care of herself." "I believe Penelope is smart enough to take care of herself." What if Gen is subtly trying to reassure Eloise about her best friend. Maybe Gen thought Eloise figured it out but also knew Benedict was listening in and didn't want to confirm it out loud, or fully risk outing Pen altogether?
Again, I could just be overthinking, but it makes sense to me. And as much as I roast the writers on this show, I'd actually be kind of impressed if they were able to turn a character who was originally a red herring for Whistledown into a character directly involved with Whistledown.

look at what you taught me
fandom: bridgerton series
pairing: colin/penelope
summary: Colin and Penelope have never been awkward with one another. Except for this one time.  (AO3) (book spoiler ahead)
In the beginning, when he travels, Colin can think of nothing else but the present moment: a ship under his feet, the lull of a carriage, the wide expanse of the world all around him. Whatever destination is coming next, if he is certain enough – if not, he’ll just make it up as he goes. The furious scribbling of his quill against paper, as he races to put down in words all his eyes take not but a second to admire. It feels like everything he never knew he wanted to do so desperately. It feels right.
Then, it becomes more difficult to return home, the more he travels. But soon enough, the travel starts to wear him down. He begins to look forward to when he’ll return home: despite his own mother’s incessant remarks, despite the brotherly arguments, despite having to see another sister married off. Even the most loving mamas trying to marry off their daughters to him seem somewhat adorable, if he is gone long enough. But the need to travel comes back, like an itch that won’t go away unless he scratches it away. He makes promises to his sisters – so that he can stay as much as possible, but he goes insane with anything more than a couple of months. He likes to believe that by now his family simply made peace with his many eccentricities, and simply paid the cook more when he was around.
He treasures the pockets of familiarity he gets when in London as much as the breathes of fresh air he gets when he’s away. He imagines he drives his mother wild, with all his coming and going across the continent. He knows what Lady Whistledown writes about him as well, and he’d strangle the woman himself, for alerting everyone of his return so punctually. Ambitious mamas are hard to fend off when you’re a young man, and it only gets worse the older he becomes, because the expectation of marriage dawns ever closer.
***
“You must agree, Colin,” his mother says, and at the mention of his name, he straightens in his chair, because it’s a terrible thing to be singled out in a conversation by Violet. “Penelope is quite an agreeable young lady.”
Colin agrees, both because he truly believes so, and because while his mother doesn’t need his confirmation, she’s kinder when she has it. Benedict, from the other side of the room, leans closer in his chair, so he can hear better whatever commentary their dear mother is about to impart with them.
“I dare say she’d make quite a suitable bride for you, really.”
All hell breaks loose. Benedict drops his foot to the floor with a loud thud, while Colin drops his sandwich, eliciting a swear for which he’s reprimanded by three of his sisters. And then.
“Mother!” Eloise shrieks, quite offended – which Colin finds surprising, considering that the two of them are best friends. “That is entirely too daring!”
Colin agrees, but he is too busy desperately trying to cough away the piece of sandwich stuck in his throat. Eloise, though still quite shocked, pushes her cup of tea in his hands, just to get him to make less noise. He downs it in one go, grateful to not have died of this particular cause. His heart, quite in override still, might provoke a heart attack soon enough if his mother does not change the subject.
“I believe you misremember your ABCs, dear mother,” he jests, because he does not want to take the idea seriously. “There’s one son for whom you haven’t found a bride quite yet.”
Benedict shifts in his seat, suddenly finding his newspaper way more interesting. But this time around, Violet doesn’t rise to the so delicious bait of teasing her second, not when her brain is so set on match-making her third.
“I don’t see why not. Isn’t she a friend to all of us?”
She stops, waits for a nod from each one of her children currently engaged in eaves-dropping on the topic.
“She’s polite, witty,” she continues listing reason after reason, all to which Colin is entirely familiar and now that he thinks about, has noticed himself, several times over, in Penelope. “And quite darling.”
He imagines darling is what girls who aren’t called beautiful get stuck with by kind mothers. He never actually stopped to even consider Penelope in any of these ways: she’s always been there, ever since he was in short pants – and that’s almost already half their lives. A fixed presence by the side of his younger sister, and a favourite of his mother, despite all the awkward wallflower tendencies in Penelope. But he doesn’t recall ever trying to pick apart her character, find her individual traits, even consider her as a… woman.
Colin is suddenly shamed by his wilful, manly indifference. Violet arches her eyebrow at him, clearly still expecting an answer.
“Mother,” he adds with a sigh. “I can promise you most certainly that I am not marrying any time soon.”
“One never knows,” she murmurs, though she allows him his momentary peace, and returns to her embroidery.
***
Only that his mother doesn’t stop with her comments, and they seem to grow in number each time she meets Penelope, which unfortunate for him, is often enough. The next morning, as she returns from shopping, she comments on how nice she looked in a dress of her own picking, and not her mother’s own distasteful choices. Each time any married sibling sends a letter, or comes visit, her efforts in getting Colin to marry are reinforced. She jabs at him with comments: morning, afternoon and evening.
And suddenly, Colin can find that there’s nothing else much that he can think about, but Penelope, and how exactly this insane idea came to live in his mother’s mind. So he starts paying attention.
He supposes parties would be generally more enjoyable if he didn’t have to attend them with his family, as much as he loves them. He can physically feel Violet’s eyes drawing across the room, and then settling, decisively, on his back, a list of eligible ladies for marriage already compiled in her mind, alongside one for dancing partners. Colin can already guess what her mother is about to tell him.
And he is right. She pokes at his elbow with her fan, nodding to the edge of the ballroom, where Penelope Featheringston stands, card empty and looking like she’d rather be anywhere else but here. Well, at least they do have that in common.
“Colin, darling,” and really, that’s all that Mrs. Bridgerton has to say to any of her children for them to do her bidding.
He makes his way across the room, trying his best to avoid getting roped into introductions by mothers or old friends alike. The faster he’s getting this over with, the faster he can return to the appetizers, and to a reconnaissance of the room of his own.
“Pen,” he says, and she startles, turning around to him with the widest of eyes, and the shyest of smiles. Huh, maybe she does look quite darling.
“Colin!” she exclaims, smoothing down a hand over her dress, and while it’s a gesture driven by nerves, it looks quite adorable.
“Would you do me the honour of a dance?”
He extends out his arm, which she takes – an answer without needing one. And it’s quite a shame, to all the other men in the room, because Penelope is a wonderful dancer, and a most attentive conversationalist during them. She asks him of his most recent travels, destination known through the letters he sent to Eloise, most likely. He’s received his fair share of foot stepping and the occasional elbow in his side, but never with Penelope.
She animates with each step, blushing at his hand around her back, smiling at a spin. He never considered how soft her body feels under his fingers, underneath the thin material of her dress, but now he is acutely aware of her warmth seeping through. He asks of the books she’s been reading, which he knows are plenty.
And at the end of the dance, he finds that maybe dancing with Penelope Featherington is not such a tedious task, after all. And at the end of the night, he’s quite certain she’s been his best partner.
***
Art exhibitions are not really Colin’s thing, really. His interest lays in a world painted in words, not in colours. But considering the fact that one of Benedict’s pieces is to be exposed to the world for the first time, of course his entire family must be present. He is proud of his brother, for having found a path in life, having chased it so full of determination.
Colin’s good at chasing as well. He’s just been proven, more and more lately, that he chases only things that cannot last, which displeases him greatly. It doesn’t mean he is not entirely supportive of his older brother. What other reason he’d have to be present here, at all?
“Penelope!” Eloise shouts, gathering the attention of her friend.
Penelope spins around, red curls jumping with the movement, and she blushes. Colin is pretty sure she’s done this every single time he’s seen her, though maybe he now begins to understand why. She nods her head in their direction, all Bridgertons replying in kind. Eloise lets go of his arm, rushing instead by her best friend’s side, hands entangled in a most obvious display of friendship and affection.
Colin knows Penelope’s family – and so he knows there’s no such camaraderie between her and her sisters, as it can be so easily observed between himself and his own siblings. He’s glad these two have each other then: a friend is one’s most fearful champion.
He walks by his mother’s side, going through the gallery, the two girls just a few feet ahead. Eloise is the taller one, yet both their heads are bent together as they discuss, such an air of ease and comfort about them. His sister says something, and suddenly Penelope turns a bit more to the side, laughing: a sparkle of mischief in her eyes and the loveliest pull at her mouth. Now, Colin finds himself quite taken with her mouth, staring because he finds it impossible not to. The soft pink of her lips, as she’s worried at them trying to come up with a comment about this and that painting. The white of her teeth, as she smiles. Her tongue, wetting her lips, from time to time, as the rooms grow hotter, with all the people passing around.
He’s lucky that the art pieces all around are distracting enough that Penelope herself doesn’t notice. His mother does, though.
“Quite darling, no?”
And she looks at the exact same person that he is, and most certainly not at the painting of a fruit basket in front of them.
“Mother,” he warns, a slight squeeze around her arm.
“Oh,” she sighs. “You can’t blame me for caring enough to try.”
Maybe not. But he can blame her for opening his eyes to something that he, like everyone else – he begins to realize - didn’t really know was right there.
***
So Colin Bridgerton, like a true hero of his days, leaves for Wales. And like the caring gentleman that he also is, he uses one of his friends as his excuse. It helps – it’s quite a useful distraction, for a while, walking over the hills, staring out at the sea, spending evenings eating hearty meals with someone that knows him well enough, but not too much. And he writes in his journal, of his quiet passing days.
By contrast, the nights are not so quiet. While he tries so hard to forget the society back in London, at night there are no distractions: and even so, while asleep, he cannot really control his unconscious mind.
So Colin dreams: at first, the most innocent of shadows, people that he can vaguely make out. Then the visions get clearer, and longer, and more tormenting. It starts with Penelope’s smile, and that mouth of hers, which in a dream he can admit to wanting to desperately kiss. Which, in a dream, he has leave to do. He knows, upon waking, that whatever taste lingers on his tongue from his haze, it certainly has nothing on the reality, and hates himself all the more for it. Then her body, close to his, the press of her bosom hard against his chest, the roundness of her bottom in his palms. The next morning, he is in need of a change of bedsheets, like he is nothing but a horny teenager.
He is sure his mother must have cursed him. The dreams continue, sweet haunting that only makes the guilt rise in his throat. She’s his sister’s best friend, for heaven’s sake, and here he is, conjuring her up in his dreams with no respite! It’s like his body has decided to take an entirely different path from his mind.
Colin is miserable on a travel, for the first time in way too long.
***
Maybe that’s his excuse. He lacks sleep, and for him, the most pressing issue is, obviously, still the one of his marriage. Violet Bridgerton is popular for many things between her children, but her cutting words and sharp mind are not necessarily one of those, especially if used against one of them. Colin has found himself at the receiving end of exactly that for weeks and months now, so he is apprehensive when he is summoned back to London.
But if his mother has need of him, then he must make haste. Of course, the real reason is simply the news of Daphne’s new pregnancy, which is incredibly happy. Colin loves to be an uncle way better than he likes being a younger brother.
Especially since right now, Anthony and Benedict have taken the liberty to pick up with the teasing where their mother stopped.
“You left in the middle of the season,” Benedict remarks, and Anthony clasps his back in a way that only eldest brothers can do, when they require an immediate answer.
“Oh, very well,” and Colin actually scowls. “I needed to get away. Mother has been incessant with this bloody marriage thing.”
And because they’re his brothers, of course they joke and jest more, at his own expense. Everyone in their house knows that his mother has her eyes set on Penelope, and everyone in their house is already tired of her insinuations, Colin most of all. That doesn’t mean that Anthony, or Benedict are going to pass up the opportunity to rile him up on the subject. It’s been a while, after all, since they’ve had reason to laugh at him in particular.
It’s the damn lack of sleep, and all of these comments, which are entirely unwarranted and so overwhelming, despite his protests, that make him throw all decorum out the window.
“I am not going to marry soon, and I am certainly not going to marry Penelope Featherington!”
“Oh!”
The softest sound, really – feminine and delicate and belonging to the single person that he didn’t want to see right this moment. With much slowness, burning red with shame, Colin turns around to look at Penelope Featherington. And he knows: by the expression on her face, the haggard breathing with the desperate rise and fall of her chest, and her eyes, that he just broke her heart.
What he says right there on the spot, he cannot truly recall. A fumbling of stupid, empty nothings, apology too small, too unfulfilling, because Penelope draws herself up and protects the little bit of her dignity left.
And she leaves, so fast that he doesn’t have the time to do what he wants: follow her to clear up things.
Benedict punches him in the arm, quite terribly hard. It still doesn’t feel as bad as the gut-wrenching guilt building up inside himself, or the self-loathe that he so much deserves. Because just as he was beginning to make up his mind regarding how dear, truly, she has grown to be for him, he has done the worst thing a person who cares about another can do: hurt her.
***
He shows up at the doorsteps of her house the following day, surprised to find Penelope alone in the drawing room.
“As you might suspect, Mr. Bridgerton,” she says, when he inquires after her mother and sisters. “Many men before you have made the same declaration, though maybe in more private settings. I am afraid any hope of marriage left in this household falls upon my sisters.”
It is the fact that she doesn’t use his name that stings the worst, and makes him understand exactly how much harm he’s done with his extremely horrifying comment.
“Penelope, I am so entirely sorry for the way I behaved yesterday. You must believe me when I say I did not mean to offend you in any way.”
“Must I?”
He stops, opens his mouth: no words come out. She looks the picture perfect of peace, and maybe this is what should worry him the most. It is his first time seeing her as more than a blushing young woman, and suddenly maybe he realizes why she is Eloise’s best friend: she’s made of tougher stuff than what he’s been led to believe so far.
“What I said, the way I’ve said it. I’ve hurt you… It’s entirely intolerable and I apologize for the situation you’ve been put in because of me being an ass.”
Situation that she handled entirely fine, given the fact that he so singled her out in a market of numerous others undesirable young ladies. She sighs at his curse, something that sounds like Colin, that has the tiniest of fondness in the tone. Something in his chest tightens with fondness of its own, for this woman in front of him, who has been nothing but a most beloved friend, to his entire family – and to him, as well.
“I…” she stops, taking in a deep breath, her hands shaking. “I already told you, no feelings were hurt. You’ve made no remark that wasn’t already obvious to everybody in the ton,” she says, and she waves in the air the latest number of Lady Whistledown.
Of course, even when he misses it, his sisters and his dear mama are quick to fill him up on the happenings of the season. In today’s fresh paper, Whistledown has written down that were the two of them ever to get married, she’d have to give up writing altogether – such an unfitting match never having been seen before.
“You can’t possibly believe those writings,” he says, suddenly offended at the paper, though he’s not quite certain on whose behalf anymore.
“I didn’t, until –”
Until he has reinforced them all the more, with his declaration. Colin suddenly feels himself flush from head to toes, at being so openly chastised. His brother Benedict has already told him, that he has cruelly overstepped most demands of polite society when he lost his temper in that way, in such a public place.
“I really do apologize, Penelope.”
He hadn’t realize how much he enjoys saying her name until now, when he so desperately wants her, needs her to say his own. A sign that things between them can be mended, move from the terrible awkwardness between them.
“Pity doesn’t feel that nice to those who already know how pitiful they are, Colin.” His gaze snaps up at her, and finds her already smiling at him – quite charming, even if so utterly self-depreciating. “Though you are forgiven.”
He bows at her in thanks, lower than he’s gone in months, if not years, just to show how entirely grateful he is. Of course, Colin is yet too young, rich, handsome and charismatic to know the meaning of her words, and too stupid of a man to try and understand where she is coming from.
But he will, in due time.
For now, maybe his favourite sight to see during his travels becomes the shores of England, when returning home. Because home has just started to mean just a tiny bit more.
