Previous Captain: “long ago when I became a detective and first joined the precinct there was a rapist the worst New York has ever seen more victims than we could count. Despite many people working tirelessly we couldn’t catch him and one of my coworkers got killed. In our darkest moment we were given a miracle this flashlight became a magical device that would never turn off. It blessed detectives and Adas with gifts to help the citizens of this city. However after years some of them decided they were too old so they stepped down and gave up their gifts. Now I’m leaving it’s your turn to lead this precinct…—————————————-

Estrella held her breath as she walked up the stairs into the building where the 16th precinct is housed. Two years she spent as a uniform officer and now she was finally promoted to a junior detective. She stopped briefly to re-read her resume making sure it was written correctly before continuing on her way. When she saw the door reading special victims unit she gulped hesitating to open it. There had been many transfer requests to this particular department thoughts of ‘what if I’m not good enough?’ Ran threw her herd after all only the best of the best would be accepted.

After what seemed like forever she opened the door and walked in. The area seemed cramped but cosy including desks filled with papers and a investigation board. It didn’t seem like any of the detectives that worked here were in at the moment. Estrella noticed a bald man sitting in an office with the door closed this must be the captain. She knocked politely and he looked up motioning for her to enter.

“Are you Captain Cragen?” Estrella asked walking in?

“Yes and your are?” Cragen asked

“Officer…sorry junior detective Estrella Juliette GracÃa” she said handing over her resume with a nervous smile

“Please take a seat” Cragen said she did as told and waited for him to read it she tried to gauge his reaction by his facial expressions but he wasn’t giving much away. Finally he looked up “this says you have an iq of 146, you graduated high school at age 13, got a scholarship to Harvard where you earned both a doctorate in criminal justice and an SJD in law by age 18, you then served in the army for three years as a private where you saved the lives of two fellow soldiers, you were awarded the silver star for your bravery being one of only 10 women to get that medal, you then joined the police academy where you graduated top of your class and now you have been promoted to detective after being in uniform for only 2 years….am I missing anything?” He asked

“I don’t think so Captain?” Estrella said a little confused

“I’m sorry the position has already been filled..” Cragen started Estrella frowned at this she knew the competition was huge but she thought he would at least think about it before making a decision “But I’ve thought about it and your resume is exemplary I would be lucky to have you on my team, so I have decided to call detective beck and tell her I am going with someone else” he finished smiling at her and handing her resume back to her

“R..really? You mean I got the job?” Estrella said shocked but excited she struggled not to jump and down in her seat

“Welcome to the special victims unit detective” Cragen said shaking her hand

“I won’t let you down Captain Cragen, when do I start?” Estrella asked

“You start tomorrow officially, today i’d like you to get to know your coworkers and then tonight will be your gift ceremony” Cragen explained

“That is fine with me” Estrella said

“Good your new partner Elliot Stabler should be at the courthouse testifying, go meet him there” Cragen ordered

Estrella got out of the cab looking for this stabler man. Instead she was disgusted to see a man kissing what looked to her like a child.

“What is going on here?” Estrella asked trying to hide the slight anger in his voice

“Butt out she’s my girlfriend” the man shot back

“Your girlfriend? This is a child that makes her your victim” Estrella said frustrated

“She is 17” the man said

“Do you have proof? I’d?” Estrella asked the girl

“She isn’t showing you anything take a hike lady” the man said

“You have to be really stupid or really cocky to molset a child in public” Estrella said pushing him down on a car hood and putting his hands behind his back

“Let me go right now! Who do you think you are” the man yelled trying to fight her

“Hey el cabrón, i’m a detective just got promote and your under arrest under the New York penal code 130 sexual abuse of a minor” Estrella said turning the man around and handcuffing him.

“Please stop he’s my boyfriend, leave him alone” the girl pleaded

“There a problem here?” A man with short brown hair and blue eyes asked he had a detectives badge much like her own in his hand

“I caught this man molesting a minor” Estrella told pointing to the handcuffed guy who yelled at the detective to “get her off me”

“Tell her” the girl said

“It’s legal the girls 17” the detective explained

“Really the girl was telling the truth?” Estrella asked still confused she let the man out of the handcuffs

“Come on let’s go home” the girl said and the couple walked away hand in hand

“That’s not right even if she is legal that guy is like 30” Estrella said

“Tell me about it, but it’s what the court ordered” the detective agreed with her “what’s it to you anyway?”

“Are you detective Elliot Stabler?” Estrella asked

“Yeah” he answered

“Well that was an awkward introduction…I’m detective Estrella GarcÃa your new partner” she introduced herself

“Welcome to the world of grey” Elliot said clearly unhappy about the courts decision

“The captain said I should get to know my co workers so I guess there other others” Estrella says

“Yeah I’m meeting them for an after work drink at a bar down the street if you want to join us” Elliot offered

“I don’t really drink but sure id like to meet them” Estrella said they then headed to the bar she let her new partner lead the way since she was familiar with the place. When they walked in she realised there was a lot of police and lawyers drinking here. Elliot walked over to a table where two men were sitting one white man in his late 40s to early 50s wearing glasses and the other a black man in his early 40s his long curly hair in a ponytail. They looked familiar and Estrella got a serious feeling of deja vu but she shrugged it off.

“Guys this is my new partner Estrella GarcÃa” Elliot introduced sitting down at the table next to fin.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you both” Estrella said sitting at the remaking seat

“Hey I’m Odafin tutuola but I prefer just fin, this is my partner John Munch” fin said shaking her hand

“Welcome to the squad and a life of regret and suffering” John said jokingly while also shaking her hand. A waitress came to the table the guys ordered beers and Estrella got a fruity cocktail. While waiting for them to arrive the guys got into a work related conversation. Elliot was still upset about the 17 year old girl case.

Estrella sat deep in thought she realised the names Tutuola and Munch were familiar to her. Then it clicked there was a detective Munch that worked in Baltimore homicide and a detective Tutuola that worked in Manhattan narcotics they were pretty much the reason she became a cop but I couldn’t be them? Could it…

“Excuse me John did you ever work in Baltimore Homicide?” Estrella asked the table went silent

“Yes a life time ago, why?” John sighed obviously not wanting to discuss his old life. Estrellas eyes went wide so she was right about one of but what about the other. She turned to look at fin

“What about you Fin did you work in Narcotics here in New York?” Estrella asked

“Yeah how’d you know are you stalking us” Fin said raising an eye brow suspiciously

“No nothing like that…do either of you remember a case fifteen years ago where one of the biggest drug lords in America was arrested he also had many trafficked girls that he would use and pass around to his men. He and his gang was responsible for a long list of murders they operated mainly from Maryland and New York but he was living in the state of Pennsylvania. He had three kids and older son and two twins a boy and a girl. The mother of his children died under mysterious circumstances.” Estrella recounted

“Have you been studying our case notes? There’s not way you could know all that if you didn’t” John said

“No i didn’t” Estrella said

“A lot of those details weren’t released to the press theres no way you can not that stufd” Fin told her

“I can explain you know that scared little ten year old girl that had to testify and put her father in prison? I don’t like to bring it up much but that way me” Estrella admired both men looked her jaws hanging open in surprised even Elliot looked shocked and he hadn’t even worked that case.

“Nah no way that was you” Fin said

“Yes way” Estrella said

“I read about that case in the paper, sorry you went threw that” Elliot said the group then changed the subject and spent the rest of the hour eating, drinking their drinks and talking about the recent case of the 17 year old that looked like a little girl. Estrella listend with interest since she just joined she wasn’t up to speed on that case.

That night the big gift ceremony was going to take place. Politicians and police from other bureaus were in attendance as well as the current members of svu. Since the prescient was small but people still wanted to know what was going thousands gathered in Times Square watching a live feed of the event. Estrella smoothed over her suit and fixed her hair ready for the ceremony to begin. Music begun to play signaling that it was time for her to emerge from behind the door she nervously complied. This was it that thing they would make or break her if she got a gift she’d become a permenant member of the squad if not she’s soon be gone like Brian Cassidy and Monique Jefferies before her. People clamped for her as she walked. She was nervous and this resulted in her only talking about a step a minute. Every so slowly she mad her way to the glowing lockers.

The lockers were large probably big enough for a person to fit inside. Each one glowed with magic displaying the name of a person and a symbol showing what their gift was. Stabler had a dumbbell on his symbolizing his gift of super strength, Tutuola had a chameleon showing that his gift is shapeshifting and Munch had a speech bubble with words in different languages on in since he had the ability to speak, read and understand all languages fluently. A new locker had appeared next to the others out of thin air this one was blank but still had an aura of magic around it. Captain Cragen was standing. He had the magical flashlight in his hand

“Will you use your gift to honor our miracle? Will you serve this city and strengthen victims hope” Cragen asked

I nodded and placed my hands on the flashlight it felt warm and calming. I went up to the locker door and hesitantly reached out touching on the combination lock. A magical light moved over the door transforming it and my name appeared in gold glowing letters ‘Estrella GarcÃa’ underneath was a love heart. I felt lots of eyes on me waiting for me to do something revealing what my gift was. Nothing happened! Everyone waited not knowing what to do and after a while Cragen addressed the crowd

“We have a new gift I don’t know sure no one knows what it is yet but it’s a gift all the same” Cragen said i ran my hand along the door confused but happy at the same time. I was now an official member of the squad but my gift hadn’t manifested itself yet..I wonder what it could be?

SVU 20 x 24 | Peter and Olivia

I’m mad that Peter’s leaving SVU, and his exit arc very much resembles that of Rafael’s. But his reason for leaving, in my opinion and after watching Chicago Justice, was very much in line with his character. So, as much as I didn’t like how he’s subtly blaming Olivia as an indirect cause for his departure, I am kind of okay because that’s what Peter Stone would’ve done: be as objective as you can, don’t let any emotions get in the way. And being with Olivia was clearly holding him back, as a lawyer (it limits his objective views) and a person (as he sees himself being weak because of this).

So here, enjoy what I’d think would’ve passed in both of their minds during this abrupt goodbye:

“Thank you.” Olivia said with gratitude, finally feeling the burden on her shoulder disappear as the case was finally wrapped up.

“What? Because I put my integrity, my career, and everything I believe in jeopardy for a good friend?” Peter asked, pointing towards the courthouse while sounding exasperated. He wasn’t only frustrated because of the case. Peter looked back towards the woman standing in front of him, this fearless woman who wears her heart on her sleeves, and his heart aches as he let his last moment with Olivia sink into his mind.

“Yes. Yes. And I didn’t ask for this.” Olivia emphasized, wanting to get the message through that she’s grateful of his help.

“I know you didn’t ask for this, but I did it anyway. I was always going to do it.” Peter paused, finally letting a glimpse of his feelings to her, and she sees how her eyes widen in shock at his confession, “I hope you find someone like that again.” As if that wasn’t enough, he could clearly see the gears in Olivia’s mind starting to turn. She tilted her head, trying to search his eyes for the meaning of those words.

“What does that mean?” Somehow, she didn’t need to hear Peter’s answer to know what his sentence meant. His job was cursed in a way after all, not many ADAs was able to maintain the job for a long time. They’d all left: Alex, Casey, Rafael, and now joining them in stepping out of the office is Peter.

“Look at what I just did there? Now I don’t regret any of it for a minute, none of it. I’ve simply lost perspective. This is on me. It’s a weakness, and it’s a crack in my character.” Peter felt his throat tighten as his short time in New York flashed in his eyes: lamenting after his father’s death, the grief after Pam was killed, and the relapse of his drinking habits. He was weak, and Peter couldn’t be weak anymore, he had to be strong to fight in court, he had to be rooted to reality and get his head in the game. “But the fact is, you became more important to me than the case I was trying, and that is not me, Liv.“ And he could see the emotions Olivia displayed disappear as she registered his words, and now all that was left in those brown orbs was pain.

Peter leaned closer and grasped her shoulders with both of his hands, wanting to take one closer look at her, “You could look at a case with an open heart. I can’t do that, I have to- Stop.” He disregarded Olivia calling his name, he had to tell her what he needs to tell, this was his last chance. “I have to look at a case with clear eyes.” And he couldn’t do that with her. Not with her emotions slowly seeping into his career, not with her life gradually mixing up with his.

“Hold on.” Olivia protested, and she remembers Rafael’s painful good bye, and she didn’t want that to happen again. But Peter continues to talk.

“Stop. Just listen. I have to move on. I have to go, or risk getting blinded again.” He reached for her hands now, and as the seconds pass by, he could feel his heart tearing apart quicker. Peter’s now glossy eyes connected with her, and she could feel his own pain, the conflict in his soul was raw as he opened up to her, but she couldn’t seem to open her mouth to speak.

“Wait.” She could only mutter, asking for more time to collect her thoughts, because Olivia didn’t want him to go so soon, and not like this. It didn’t have to be this way, she thought, but Peter was very clear that his goals were already set.

“Take care of yourself. “ Peter shared one last glance with her, before every so gently breaking apart from her, and finally parting away from her. Olivia stood there as she held both of her hands up, the warmth of Peter’s grip still lingering just slightly. As his back disappeared among other civilians walking along the street, her eyes becomes dazed as she was lost in her own thoughts, because there were so many things she also wanted to say, but Peter didn’t even gave her the chance to change his mind about leaving.

At this point, I don’t actually care who Olivia ends up with. Be that Rafa, Brian, Elliot, Trevor, Peter or some unknown character that may show up in the future. As long as she’s happy getting the good loving she deserves. That’s all I’m here for.

Sure, having EO endgame will be a fucking dream come true. But I don’t want it if it’s at her emotional expense (fucking Elliot being a dumbass and getting involved— and SLEEPING with other people? Whilst pushing her her away, telling her that what goes on in his life is none of her business? Fuck that very much). She’s suffered enough. I’m with her. I want HER happy.

Side note, I’m in absolute awe of Mariska, she’s a fantastic human and phenomenal actress. It’s no secret why she has chemistry with every male character that Olivia comes across (this dates back to Porter, I remember shipping them so hard. Broke my heart really that he lied to her back in season 11).

Summary: Barba realizes maybe getting under someone isn’t the way to get over someone else.

Everyone says heartache takes months, even years to get over, sometimes never. Some say to get over someone you have to get under someone else.

It had been two months since you and Rafael had called it quits, it was gut wrenching to throw away almost three years of a relationship, but it had to be done. Deep down, you knew when you both took your anger out on each other, spent more time wrapped up in a blanket than in each others arms, the quiet breakfast together and the blank stares at the office weren't personal. When you and Raf broke up, you both admitted what had went wrong and that maybe it was best to lay things to rest for a bit, maybe a few days or weeks or maybe forever.

You knew it was forever when a young, blonde, short skirt and high heels popped into SVU with Rafael. Of course everyman in the unit was drooling over this girl.

“And who is this Barba?” He smirked, and introduced her as Lillian Gomez, his new assistant of course he had to check to make sure you were paying attention to the scene. You just looked straight ahead at your computer, trying your best to focus on the work you had. Something in you just wanted to rip Barba apart, how could he? Three years and now he comes in drooling over his assistant for you to see? How cold is that?

Weeks had passed, you were slowly dying on the inside. Why did his assistant have to be everywhere? You sat in the courtroom ready to get this hearing over with and praying that this perp would be behind bars. Carisi made his way over to you.

“Hey! How are ya?” You looked at him, arms crossed and rolled your eyes.

“Sonny, I’m ready to flip my fuckin’ lid! Why does he have to bring here everywhere? I mean everywhere! I’m surprised when I go to the restroom she’s not fuckin standing there behind me!” You whispered, Sonny laughed.

“I know your hurt,” He put his arm around you, “Have you talked to him? At all?”

“Nope. He hasn’t talked to me.” Sonny rolled his eyes.

“Look you can’t be that way, what are ya in highschool?” You scoffed.

“No! Why would I beg him to talk to me?” Sonny rolled his eyes, once again. You looked up to see a harsh, cold stare from Barba. Once he noticed you he turned to take his seat.

“Did you see that? He just cut through me using his eyes.” Sonny laughed and grabbed your hand.

“Look, you can do one of two things. One, tell Barba how you feel! You guys broke up cause what? Work, stress all that good stuff? Okay, talk to each other like adults. Two, keep watching him with that random lady and probably a lot more random ladies and suffer.” He paused, looking like he was trying to think of something to add. “Oh! You do have a third option, get under someone!” You slapped him lightly, you chuckled but quickly became serious when the judge stepped in.

The trial finally ended at 6:42PM. Guilty on all charges, 25 to life, no chance of parole. This was a tough case for SVU, and Barba. Fin of course had the idea of going out for drinks at the local bar. You sighed, getting ready to walk away but you were stopped by Sonny.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.” You smiled, getting ready to turn again.

“No, you are going to come to this bar. You were a big part of why this sick bastard got convicted.” You smiled and blushed.

“Well, you do have a point. I’ll go on one condition. Don’t let me do anything stupid. Like don’t let me get drunk.” Sonny threw a thumbs up.

“I’m your guy! I got your back and you know it!”

Well, after six shots Sonny should watch no one. He half way lived up to his promise, but you were on your third drink so who knows? You may catch up with him in a bit. You sighed deeply, checking the time on your cell phone, no texts, no calls, go figure. Rollins came over to you as you slowly stirred your drink, occasionally looking up to see Barba and Lillian. Rollins scooted close to you.

“You know, I can baby sit Carisi if you want to bounce.” You turned your head quickly.

“How do y-” She smiled, taking a sip of beer and then cut you off.

“I had to do the same thing you are once, Nick Amaro. I had to watch him drool over his ex wife, wife, baby mama whatever you wanna call her. Sucked the life out of me, it was a real low blow, especially when he knew how I felt. I can understand you not wanting to see that.” You looked back to Barba, his hand on Lillians leg. Amanda was right, you couldn’t take that. You thanked her and paid for your drinks. You darted out of the bar, past Barba and Lillian, slamming the door shut. You sat down on the hard sidewalk and decided you needed a cigarette. You lit up and leaned your head back onto the brick wall. No sooner than you did this, you heard the bar door open. You couldn’t bring yourself to look, you didn't want eye contact with anyone from work now.

“Really? When did you start smoking again?” You heard Rafael say. You turned your head, blowing the smoke near him.

“When did you start to give a fuck? Mhm. Finally get your hands and mouth free for a minute instead of all over that woman!” You shouted, pissed off, hurt, all of it would be out tonight. You threw the butt on the ground and stomped on it to make sure it was out.

“You know what? I don’t give a shit. Go, go be with her! I can’t even think about another man, but you’re out here able to stick your tongue down the first girls throat! Did you really care? Did you really hurt when we broke up, or was that some kind of act?” Barba walked closer to you, grabbing your hands and holding them tightly.

“I can't listen to her talk without hearing your voice.” He whispered. You felt less tense.

“What?” You asked, hot tears flowing down your cheeks from anger.

“I can’t listen to her without hearing your voice. You’re all I think about, even when I’m with her, I think of you. I want you, I was happy with you. Right now I’m just here. With you I was living.” He grabbed you and embraced you tightly.

“I love you (Y/F/N). I want you back, I want us.” You smiled into his shoulder, trying not to cry on his suit.

“I love you Raf.” He kissed you softly on the lips.

“So, you’re my girlfriend again?”

“Not that easy, you have to take me to my favorite restaurant, then we’ll talk.” He smirked, grabbing your hand tightly.

“Well what are we waiting for?”

The Mourning After

“Hi, everyone.. my name is Y/N. Um. I’m here because I lost my sister in a tragic incident last year and I’ve been holding it all inside since then. My therapist suggested that I come here and meet people who are having the same experiences in life as I am, so that’s why I’m here. Anyway, I’m really hoping that I can find some peace and maybe meet some people that can help me feel normal, again.” You smiled briefly and then sat back down in your metal folding chair in the circle. Around you were people from what you assessed to be all different walks of life: men in suits, women in yoga pants, old, young, healthy, ill.. everything. Truth be told, when your therapist had suggested you join a grief support group you thought he was being stupid; what a stupid idea. Why surround yourself with people who were just as mournful as you? But then, when you really thought about it, it was probably better to be near people who felt like you did. You didn’t have to explain yourself to people who were just as sad as you.

“Welcome, Y/N. We are very glad to have you. Our goal here isn’t to remove grief but to learn how to adapt and overcome the feelings that can be associated with such painful emotions,” a woman, who you later learned was Jennifer Holmes, a licensed social worker and certified grief counselor. She would come to be a huge help in your corner, a constant ally.

SIX MONTHS LATER

“That’s an entirely normal feeling. We can’t wake up every morning and think that life is going to be perfect. We’ve seen the ugly and the horrible in life, but look, we keep waking up and choosing life even when we don’t always want to, and I think that’s the most important part of what we’re doing here,” Jennifer explained from her spot in the circle. “Y/N, tell me what improvements you’ve made since our meeting last week?”

You smiled softly and cleared your throat. “Earlier this week, a co-worker of mine was having a really bad day. Her mother is terminally ill and she’s having a really hard time grasping what’s going to happen after she’s gone. She.. uh, she knows about my situation with my sister and she had lunch with me. We talked about it, and I think maybe I helped her see what the possibilities were. Like, it doesn’t have to be just pain, you know? Celebrate life and find the good. If you don’t you’re just gonna..” you stopped and twiddled your thumbs for a moment. “End up here.”

A small chuckle went around the group and you felt relieved - sometimes your sense of humor was dark, cynical even.

“That’s great, Y/N. You’ve made a lot of progress since you joined. It’s a wonderful thing to see you here every week. Thank you for being a part of the group,” Jennifer said with a warm smile.

For the past three years you’d been working as a social worker for the State of New York. It was thankless from your employer, but you were always happy when you were able to see improvement in a family’s situation. Of course, it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows, but sometimes you had to focus on the job and not the details. That, however, was the hardest part. You were too tender-hearted, your sister always told you. She was right, but you had begun to develop thick skin.

During your time with the state you’d met a lot of people, but most of them were acquaintances, not friends, not confidants. You had contacts all over the city - lawyers, police officers, detectives, doctors - all to make sure you had your bases covered in the event that you needed to call on someone for support in a case.

“Social Services. This is Y/N. How can I help you?” you answered your phone, staring at your case load on the screen of your computer. How were there always so many kids in need?

“Hey, Y/N. It’s Detective Rollins at SVU. I need you to check out something for me.”

“Hey Amanda! Sure, what’s going on?” you asked, pulling up your database on your computer and waiting for her next question.

A few minutes later you had what she needed and hung up the phone, leaving the office at setting out on foot to the SVU squad room. It wasn’t very far and you needed the exercise. It was a brisk day, but it was beautiful, and one thing that you’d learned from your therapy was that fresh air did more good than we realized.

You were thankful for the SVU team. Lieutenant Benson and Detective Carisi had been the first on the scene to your sister’s murder. You couldn’t be more thankful for their work in helping put her murderer behind bars. They saw horrible things everyday and they also chose to keep going. They were a testament to how you should feel - at least outwardly. You never really knew how they felt on the side. Their happy smiles and cheerful banter had you fooled for all you knew.

Detective Carisi met you at the entrance to the squad room and greeted you with a brief handshake. “Thanks for bringing those by so fast. You’re a life saver. The mom is in here claiming that her boyfriend has been beating her, but swears that he hasn’t been living there.. just checking our bases, trying to figure it out,” he explained as you handed the file over.

“Yeah.. he’s on the list of residents in their apartment. But anyway everything you need is in there,” you said, smiling for a moment.

“Thanks. Hey what’s for lunch?” he asked, looking at his watch and then back up at you.

“Work. We don’t all get to break for lunch, Sonny,” you said with a roll of your eyes - playfully, at least. “I’m kidding. I dunno, I was thinking about lox.”

“Let’s go. I need to talk to you,” he insisted and spun you around to walk you out of the door.

Sonny was someone you trusted and held dearly to your heart. He was kind and warm hearted, but even more than his personality, he was someone who you trusted based on your experiences with his police work during your sister’s case.

“So what’s this about?” you asked as you sat down and moved a few capers around on your bagel.

“You can say no, but I hope you don’t. Alright..” he breathed in and exhaled slowly. “Our ADA has been through some stuff and he’s just.. spiraling, I think. I’m friends with the guy and I’m worried about him beyond work, Y/N. I know you go to that group every week and I was wondering if you could tell me where it is and what time? I wanna get him to go to at least one meeting to give it a shot.”

You couldn’t remember who the new ADA was, because the last one you’d met was Barba. You knew he was gone, unfortunately, and had never made the time to meet the new one.

“Sure.. here, I have a card, actually,” you offered and pulled one from your bag. You slid it across the table and looked at Sonny very sternly. “If he comes, though, he can’t just sit there. That’s not how it works. So, I’m just saying, if he’s an ass or something.. maybe don’t give him the info?”

Sonny laughed and pocketed the card. “No promises. His name is Peter, by the way. If you see him there be nice. He needs a shoulder.”

The night of the meeting rolled around again, finally. You stood in the corner sipping a cup of watery coffee, scanning the new faces that were sitting nervously in cold metal chairs. A man, in his fifties, looked like he could be a lawyer. A young girl no older than 24, she was so young and so hurt. A man who looked like he was in his mid to late thirties, in a suit and tie, staring down at his phone. A handful of others trailed in as the meeting began and you took your seat next to the new girl.

“I see we have some new faces! That’s great. Thank you for joining us. Let’s start by standing and introducing ourselves if we’re new, and then we’ll begin.”

The older gentleman stood up and straightened his tie. “My name is Malcolm. I’m here because my wife passed away a month ago and we were married for 30 years. I don’t know how to.. to be me without her. Ah.. um. Anyway, hope to find some resolution here.”

“Hi, I’m Lindsay. I’m here because my boyfriend of four years passed away in a car..” she paused as her voice broke and sat back down abruptly. “Accident. I’m sorry. I need.. some time,” she insisted and accepted a tissue as you held out the box to her.

A few new faces stood and said why they were there, some from natural deaths, some from senseless crime. You were familiar with the crime, as that’s how your own sister had been taken from you.

Lastly, the man who was focused on his phone before the meeting stood up. “Hi. I’m here because my sister was murdered.. and,” he stopped and cleared his throat. “Sorry. My father also passed away and this has all happened within the last few years. I hadn’t thought about dealing with it but I realize I’m not doing well.”

“Thanks for joining us.....?” Jennifer asked, hinting at his name.

“Stone.”

You looked him up and down for a moment, realizing that you’d not yet seen anyone so attractive in your group before - not that you were there for companionship of that nature. It was just hard to take your eyes off of him. He was beautiful.

“Is that your first or last name?” Jennifer asked, writing in her notebook.

“Oh, I’m sorry. That’s my last name. My first name is Peter.”

Your eyes widened and you looked down, busying yourself with the box of tissues you held. Suddenly, group had gotten a lot more interesting.
