The following fan art is done by @anona1wholovesbelos : )
They drew two different fan arts. I will be posting them separately since the other one has sexual content. The other one will only be able to be seen by the older audience : o
Now, I wanted to say @anona1wholovesbelos, you are an amazing artist and love how you drew Belos here, he is so cute here :'3. Like, I can't stop staring at him still o.o. And luz is so funny here, and well drawn too :'3
They may be drawing more stuff, so please follow them~
And this is based on "was not the hero" fanfiction : )

Are au's where Belos is "good" or get's a redemption an insult / offensive to abuse victims?
I don’t think so. I’m going to share an example of something similar that happened in my family for an explanation.
My dad grew up with a pretty terrible alcoholic for a father. He would yell, hit his family, and threaten them. A couple times the police were called from what I heard. One of the stories he ever told me specifically was when my dad was young. My grandfather threw a mug at him from across the room, and it hit him in the head. Dad still has the scar from that, and it was forty years ago.
In short, it was hellish and incredibly unsafe. My dad got himself out of there, put himself through college, and did a lot of really amazing things.
When dad was older, my grandfather started going to alcoholic support groups and therapy so he could work on his addiction. He was able to go to my parents’ wedding, and was an actual part of my dad’s life again. When he died, he was more than twenty years sober, and my dad speaks fondly of him.
If people can change that way in real life, I don’t understand how it could be harmful to depict it in fiction. It would need to be done carefully, because abuse is a complicated situation. It doesn’t always get better, and people don’t always redeem themselves from that.
But it’s possible, and I find it heartening to read.

Was Not A Hero
For those who want to read a Philip/Belos redemption story, or a more complex Philip instead of the ‘He was just evil’, then give this story a try by @chiconisroc:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/39336213/chapters/98440977
A lot of anguish/drama.
Spoilers:
Philip goes through guilt later in the story and it does its best to dive deep into his psych.
Luz’s parallelism with Philip is looked into in an interesting way.

New chapter of my Philip Redemption story! :D
https://archiveofourown.org/works/39727794?view_full_work=true
The local witch hunter catches his first ever witch... or is it some kind of demon? It seems like a gang of strange kids knows what is is but they are not interested in working with him. Their loss!
A Philip/Belos redemption story and my take on season 3! What can I say? I love a challenge. The more of a complete monster he is the more I want to hurt him, but also fix him <3

not spop-related but i can't post this on my main blog so.
i do find it funny how most of the fan depictions of belos were far more interesting and detailed than s3 belos. i've seen fanart and fanfics of him where he's a complex villain struggling with religious guilt and then the canon is just like.. lmao yeah he's pure evil. kill him.

The Dawn AU Masterpost
Short summary: after the Day of Unity, Philip spent ten years in prison under a sleeping spell. He has forgotten a lot, he barely remembers himself. But he is still remembered by Luz and Hunter, who need help from the former emperor.

Shadow Puppets au - Charlatans
This is actually planned to be part of a larger sequence involving a third character who calls Belos out as not talking to the Titan, but we haven't gotten to this part in the RP yet so said character's dialogue isn't set in stone, but this exchange is
For anyone seeing this au for the first time
Philip and the Collector "Astrophel" are genuine friends in this au, and have been since Philip was eight years old
No one can see or hear Astrophel unless they have touched the Collector's tablet or the Stella-Luna Amulet that Belos wears around his neck
Astrophel is an active and equal part of Belos's scheme to deceive and destroy the isles, consulting with him and using his limited power to affect the outside world to cause natural disasters on command in order to make it look like Belos is communicating with the Titan
Philip is also actually cursed in this au, and I don't think I've mentioned this before, but his eyes glow when the curse is acting up

Sometimes I'll be vibing and then I see a post like "Weh Belos could've been perfect for a redemption arc but no he's just a 2-D villain" and it's like congrats you missed the point. The fact he has reasons and a backstory already makes him more dimensional than your basic "I'm doing this for money/fame/power" or "I'm doing this cause it's funny" villains.
A redemption arc is not needed to make a villain more interesting or more 3 dimensional. That is such a stupid take. That's just a disservice to Belos as a villain. Not every awful person is just waiting for the right person to change their minds and show them the error of their ways so they can work hard to do what's right and fix what they have done. Some people would rather DIE on that hill. Some people would rather dig their grave even deeper because admitting they are wrong is just so far out of the question it might as well not even be mentioned. Some people would rather choke than have their beliefs questioned and be confronted with the idea that everything they've worked for was in fact WRONG.
And the fact some Belos fans don't get that is just ASTOUNDING to me. I love redemption arcs do not get me wrong. But if every dang villain got redeemed my GOD it would actually have been so wasted on Belos. Not everything has to have a Steven Universe ending. Especially when unlike the Diamonds, he actually was the one to kill his brother.
And just in case I need to repeat this louder for those in the back
A redemption arc is not needed to make a villain more 3-dimensional.

Chapter 34 is up
This is a Philip Wittebane redemption story in case anyone is new
Let me know what you peeps think of it
I apologize for the long delay and the short chapter :c
Summary:
He lost…
Many years of planning and sacrifices for nothing.
He has failed to eliminate the dangers that his fellow humans may face in the future…
Now he’s back home after living centuries in a wicked world full of monsters, yet he has not realized he was the monster of Boiling Isles all along.

What do you think of good Belos au's / au's where he's not a complete piece of garbage?
I like them!
There are a few that I like, such as “Humanity and Its Consequences,” which is an AU where Philip and Luz swap places with each other. A few other fics I like are “Reasoning With Crazy,” “Blunt Force Trauma” (Philip gets hit on the head with a collapsing ceiling and ends up believing the backstory he made up to be Belos is real), and (naturally) “Was Not The Hero.”
Some AUs you can find here on tumblr that I’m fond of are The Bone of Ortet AU, the Twin Rulers AU, the AROFAM AU.
I love the way these different works illustrate the various aspects of Philip’s personality and show his growth and/or descent as time goes on. They’re interesting and well thought out. If that’s your cup of tea, I’d really suggest you give them a look!

It's abundantly clear that they're not going in this direction but the whole puritanical thing is why I always thought redemption would've been the best way to defeat Belos. Sure if you kill him, you defeat him, but if you force him to admit both that he was wrong the whole time and has done horrible things AND that he is still capable of changing and doing good instead of being doomed to Hell forever, then you defeat his IDEOLOGY. That's much more powerful IMO.
1000% agree with you there, anon. If you simply kill Belos in battle, he will die thinking himself a martyr. If he dies after a complete mental breakdown and realizes that all he did was for nothing, then sure there will be tragedy and some schadenfreude for those who hate the character, but you did nothing to confront the ideology that made Belos in the first place. You just killed a man. You did nothing to actually address where bigotry comes from, or how trauma can deeply warp a person, especially without proper help.
Honestly, the worst form of punishment for Belos is not death or to be eternally trapped somewhere (that idea is ironically enough, a very Christian worldview) but to hold him accountable and to bring true justice. Make him realize that the people he hated for so long had good in them and that they are willing to accept his change of heart if he takes the proper steps to repair what he nearly destroyed (and to also acknowledge that most people may not even want to be anywhere near him but he should still takes steps to atone regardless).
Puritan ideology teaches that people are born sinful and are either predestined for Heaven or Hell and no action in life can change that. What better way to counter that view then to go the opposite route and say that people can change for the better BUT actions must be taken to address and repair the harm done to the community.
Give me restorative justice not retribution!
Unfortunately, the show doesn't really go too deeply into ideologies, it's a very relationship-centered show, which is one of its strengths. But I can't help but think of the missed opportunities of not showing more of Gravesfield and how toxic ideas are grown and cultivated in communities and not from individuals. How much stronger the show would be if it didn't pin all of its evil on one bad dude and if the Boiling Isles had systemic problems that were present before Belos.
Giving Philip a redemption arc would be the ultimate repudiation of Christian fundamentalism because it would break the cycle that allows hatred and bigotry to grow.
Thank you for the ask!

Collector's existence confuses me
To add such an important character this late to the show would've been understandable if he wasn't a last addition after the shortening, wouldn't the cancelation mean that there needs to be more focus on belos instead of reducing his screentime? this show's lore was already underdeveloped thanks to disney but now we're also speedrunning a new one
I hope the last episode proves me wrong and actually shows why he matters so much because I really can't see how his presence is so necessary to the point that he overshadows the main villain
