"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living and, above all, those who live without love" is such a fucking raw line. Miss Rowling obliterated Emil Cioran Soren Kierkegaard and Jean-Paul Sartre with it. All those male pessimist or existentialist philosophers who are worshipped in academia because they jerked off in their bourgeois appartment saying life sucks are made to make you feel bleak. But the way JKRowling talks about life, death, grief and love, which are the main themes in all of her main books (Harry Potter, The Casual Vacancy, Cormoran Strike) is so human and moving and comforting, but of course, because she is a children book writer and, even more awful, a "TERF bitch", she isn't heralded the same way male philosophers are. There's a reason so many people find solace in Harry Potter, it's because it doesn't shelter you from the awfulness of death while, at the same time, it brings you an optimist perspective on life and offers positive values. As such, JKRowling's philosophy is counter cultural in that it challenges the existentialist worldview that has been embraced by the arts and academia. In this essay, I will-

Lloyd felt strange all of a sudden. He couldn't believe that a man like Javier was following him. How? Why? This moment, following his instruction, sharing jokes, and sitting around the bonfire with him, suddenly seemed bizarre to Lloyd. The Knight of Blood and Iron. When I read it, he was this fictional character I found cool and could only hope to hang out. Lloyd stared hard at Javier, sitting across from him. Javier, feeling the gaze, looked back strangely. "Master Lloyd? Why are you staring at me like that?" "Oh, your brows are slightly asymmetrical." "My brows?" "Yeah." "So...?" "What do you mean, so? That shows you're human too." "It makes me human that my eyebrows are not proportionate?" "Yeah. I means that you're not perfect."
i wish this energy had been carried through the entire novel in a more overt way you don't understand-
the idea of javier starting as this flawless, unreachable character who is just too perfect to be real and then as the plot goes on, as lloyd gets to know him, as they start sharing the role of protagonist, he starts turning into more of a real person, with his own quirks and flaws and imperfections. he starts making mistakes and maybe struggling at things that he would've easily accomplished in the original novel. he gets in a fight and by the end of it his face is covered in dirt and scrapes. he wakes up and his hair is messy leaning less towards perfectly tousled and more towards rat's nest. he's still infuriatingly handsome but he's also a little awkward and dorky.
and all of it making him even more endearing to lloyd than the character he read about all those years ago. because this is real, this is javier as lloyd knows him, this is the person he befriended, the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with, the person he's willing to die for.
basically i wanted javier to be lloyd's velveteen rabbit. loving him so long and so much he becomes Real.

shadow nia being an ass is perfectly in line with what's been established so far actually, that being that light and shadow are not inherently good or bad and that a mix of both is ideal. nia turning from "nia" to "shadow nia" is another case of one taking over, one being too much. we can confer from what's been shown that a focus light has always been with undercurrents of self-sacrifice and service at the cost of your life/self, what we see as typically "virtuous". meanwhile, shadow is seen as more indulgent and self-serving, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily "bad".
shadow nia's outburst and personality is because of a lifetime of suppression of her natural inclinations to be selfish or self-indulgent. no matter how kind she is nia is still a person and thus "imperfect", who still wants, feels, and desires things not typically endorsed by her religious upbringing and lifestyle. basically she bottled up all her negative "sinful" feelings because she thought it was bad and it blew up in her face in the form of shadow completely taking her over.
nia's story is one of how society and institutions can make you believe that denying yourself feeling all "negative" emotions and acting on "negative" inclinations is bad, how that isn't true and how everything should be taken into moderation, and how women's emotions are often ignored and downplayed until it's too late, which by then it's gotten so bad that most people would just brush them off as irrational anyway. yeah shadow nia's an ass, but you have to ask - what powers were at play that made her act this way?
still, i fully believe nia is going to eventually find a perfect balance of both, mastering "true" magic like cherta's.

I know it’s been said, but the ending of rgu really is so crazy like utena and anthy leave the story they leave the confines of the narrative to write their own story and you have no idea what happens to them after that because they’re not characters anymore, they’re people. Instead of being dictated by what’s written, they’re the ones doing the writing. They go from characters to people

Papyton Week Day 1: Movies "You Are Right Where I Belong"
Papyrus hasn’t seen this movie in a long time. No. Papyrus hasn’t seen this since he was small, and he and Sans watched it Underground on the TV in their house in Snowdin. He liked it well enough, but they didn’t usually have much time for movies. Besides, Sans always fell asleep which made it boring to want to watch movies anyway. There was no one to share the suspense and joy with when Sans decided to nod off.
However, Papyrus finds that watching movies with with Mettaton is very different.

always really funny to see a post explicitly go "this frustrating thing the fandom does that is not supported by the campaign or the way the characters behave at all" and then people in the tags read it as "this is a post criticizing the cast and an opportunity for me to rant about how the cast is doing the aforementioned frustrating thing that the post specifically said is not happening in the campaign"

thinking on it, i’m not sure i know what the midnight channel actually is yet. i’ve been lead to believe that what appears on the midnight channel are shadow selves, but it’s been bugging me that those appearances don’t have yellow eyes like shadow selves do. and for something that’s assumedly broadcasting their shadows, the midnight channel shows are pretty different from what their shadows actually represent. like, “scoring a hot stud” and “wanting to be saved by a prince”, aren’t really the same thing? it’s persona so i figure the tv world is the collective unconscious, and (though im less certain about this) dungeons are largely rooted in personal unconscious, but i guess the midnight channel stems from the collective unconscious, or the perception of that person in the public eye rather than the person themselves? to borrow a term from the future, the midnight channel shows are cognitions of the public or something. i’m not sure how that feeds into dungeons and the appearances of shadow selves though, is it a ‘i’ll become what you want me to be’ situation or are they more influenced by the collective unconscious than i had assumed they were?

I'm going to be completely honest when i saw everyone salivating over this fic and calling the reader jane I was heavily suspicious because x reader fanfic of quality is a bit impossible to find and i always hate when people tag oc stuff as "x reader".
But then I opened the fic and the reader was like "idk man duck" and i immediately fell in love. I'm only 3 chapters in n and I'm already so impressed by how true to character your Matthew is. Like this is a holy grail fic so far.
Also when matt was all spooky like and saying "your lucky I dont tear it off and beat you with it" I 100% thought that he was talking about the jacket and not the guys arm lmao
I know this feeling, so I totally get it! I've had some readers wonder the same thing - 'everyone calls her Jane so uuuuuh???' Which is hilarious cause when I first wrote her and gave her fake identity that name, I had no idea it would become as commonly used as it was. 😂
I'm so, so happy you're enjoying it! Red Thread's definitely my love letter to Daredevil, and to Matt especially, even if I love the whole of the world and characters and themes built there, too. I wanted to craft a Reader character we could all relate to, that embodied a lot of how we fans feel about the universe, while still using her to explore and develop and dig down deep into what this world and the characters and their flaws/trauma/outlooks mean. And I'm just happy other people were happy to come along for the ride!
fun fact the duck is based on the first woodcarving i ever made
Now I'm imagining Matt beating someone with a sleeve and you know what? With his level of rage, he could, go for it matt

if demons and grimms are “godless” species then where did they come from?
They were still Created, just not by Auberon and Abaddon. Soft system I'm always tweaking but the ranking goes
- Major gods (Auberon/Abaddon)
- Minor gods (created by fallen scales of major gods)
Then at the bottom is
- Neo gods (Fictional gods & minor gods who lack sapience)
The Godless species, chimera/demons, grimms and werewolves are all created by minor gods but the circumstances are what class them as godless.
Grimms killed their minor God because they are staunchly anti religion and didn't want to fall into blind worship of their mother. Werewolves immmm still figuring out.
And chimera's minor God was never known, it wasn't sapient and wouldn't have been classed as a valid minor God if it was public and not limited to a specific catacomb. Need to tweak all this too but basically it Died and chimera emerged from the earth that they used to live under, horrifying the world ect. They're an extreme outlier in how species normally arrive to the world and speculations on where they came from run rampant, the most popular being the idea of a third major God who is responsible for all corruption in the world ect. Bc they don't have a God they also often create neo religions which is looked down upon.
Pretty much all the setting boils down to is if you have a bragging for existing and if the thing that made you can vouch for it. Chimera, grimm, werewolves and the ocean are considered physically Not part of the world as a whole because they either never had a creator in the worlds eye or have outright rejected the one they did have, or adopted a neo religion which is considered akin to rejecting the physical truth of the world. Ect
I hope that's coherent I'm literlsly about to enter the nap zone

I had a pretty scary computer malfunction happen yesterday and while everything is fixed now, I'm still kinda reeling from being in a Big Anxiety state for many hours. I was working on a New Year's drawing but I don't have the energy or interest to finish it in time. So the last thing I drew in 2023 was a silly Bad Batch drawing that'll post when I have a chance to color it.
Anyway if I don't get around to making a 2023 reflection post... I just want to say that this was a pretty good year for my art and I feel so blessed to have interacted with so many new people and especially to have read so many fics that inspired me as a fan and a storyteller.
May your new year be blessed with good tidings. :)

Most people: Let’s add Cub to the poly ship!
Me: But how about the angst potential of that instead?
Like, just imagine Cub looking over them years after everything settled or in a little gap of peace, happy for Scar for finding happiness and love, but sad that he can’t be part of it.
I like to think that Cub and Scar had that “There is nothing worse than meeting the perfect person at the wrong time”
The unintentional betrayal Cub had done to Scar, can’t earn back the time Scar lived in fear of betrayal and abandonment.
They could obviously still have feelings for one another, but what is love without trust?
Belle has you locked in their crosshairs, Anon <3
Everyone knows I love a good angst mmm but I love a good happy ending even more. That being said, if Cub ever does join the polycule, it would be WAY into the future, beyond the end of the series, when they've had time to reconcile everything. So Midnight won't ever be explicitly Mumconvexian (unless I write some self indulgent future fics) and as far as the main series goes I'll probably leave it open ended to how Mumscarian's relationship with Cub can go, but I'm a bit of a romantic when it comes to fictional men and, as someone who had a bit of a "childhood romance" (as much as literal children can have, anyway), the idea of two people who were "right person, wrong time" coming together again, finally at the right time, is just so... mmm.
Now there are absolutely YEARS of this, Cub being the "family friend" who is so so so happy that Scar has finally found a place that he's happy, finally has that family he always wanted and just wishing he could be part of it, so you're definitely right at least for a WHILE.
More thoughts below the cut thank you~
So the thing with Scar and Cub is that... things will never be the way they were before, but that doesn't mean they can't find forgiveness and rebuild trust, rebuild some kind of relationship again. It would take years to do (on Scar's side) but I'm a sucker for stories of forgiveness and moving on. And at its core, that's what Midnight is; it's a story about moving on from the past, about forgiving (others and your self), it's about breaking cycles and confronting the darkest parts of yourself- and of others- and finding it in you to love anyway. It's about not erasing the past but learning from it, growing and looking to tomorrow instead of living in yesterday. It's a story of grief and loss and hope and dreams and love.
And yes, there are things that can't be forgiven, but everyone gets to make their own choices on that.
As far as Cub's unintentional betrayal- there is time for Cub to prove to Scar that the way he thought things were, wasn't how they were. There's time for him to prove that he was Scar's friend because he wanted to be, time to show him that what they had wasn't fake, to prove that he really did love Scar as much as any fourteen year old could love another. And life's too short to linger in the past. It's been more than fifteen years by now, and really... Scar is so tired of being afraid and alone, and now he isn't alone anymore and he's not afraid anymore, and nothing will ever erase those years but god, he just wants to move on from it already. And despite it all, Scar misses Cub.
They haven't had time to talk about it. They haven't had time to even begin trying to come back from it- but that doesn't mean they never will.
And honestly, after what I'm about to put Cub through, I think Cub deserves to be loved hjgfdjkkjfsd-
