the white-lined sphinx, which is about the size and shape of a hummingbird and hovers in midair to sippy from flowers

the elephant hawkmoth, which is colored like a frickin pokemon

the poplar sphinx moth, amongst which gynandromorphs are unusually common (intersex moths!), as pictured here

the oleander hawkmoth, which looks like someone spilled green and purple paint all over it and eats mostly poisonous plants

the gardenia bee hawkmoth, who imitated a bee so hard that their wings are clear and they got fuzzy butt pompoms

In a previous post, you've mentioned that even Pokemon would wear shellcaps, such as Dewotts. And, Pokemon like Slowking have proved that evolution can occur if you use an item that was originally from another Pokemon.

Are there any Pokemon that are known to evolve while wearing a shellcap? And if so, are there any changes or adverse effects to the evolution?

As far as I'm aware, there aren't any pokémon whose evolution can be induced by a shellcap, although you could argue that Karrablast's evolution into Escavalier is essentially it evolving due to gaining a shellcap -just not a human-made one.

However, one historical text by the... dubiously credible medieval scholar Poplar states that if a Karrablast is given 'Halfe a Shelmet's armour' (presumably referring to the upper half, most likely a typical shellcap) it does not fully evolve into Escavalier, but rather a slightly smaller pokémon which does not fly, but still bears some of the armour of an Escavalier. This 'hypaspist' (a reference to dismounted soldiers of ancient armies) or sometimes 'Half-escavalier' was allegedly two feet tall and carried 'broken lances', which would have made it somewhat suboptimal as a fighter in a battlefield where much larger pokémon and perhaps more notably armoured humans were prevalent.

Now it's generally considered that Poplar is not a reliable source of information -he has written about many things we know to be false, like Zigzagoon storing Applins in its fur- and considering that we have almost no other accounts of hypaspists existing, other than one or two artworks by Arcean monks (which were probably based off of Poplar's description!) it's quite unlikely that the hypaspist existed. However, it does continue to be an interesting little oddity of middle ages' extensive breeding of Shelmet and Escavalier.

So... I remembered my scrapped Galar fic story.

Just to let you know, please do not expect anything to come of this, this is just an incomplete framework for a scrapped story. And nothing more.

a variation of these events occurred in the pasio fic, which release has been delayed, but will be here shortly, I promise.

things of note: the twist initially was going to be that Rose was Ash's dad, which I changed because Peony is more fun. Also, the story was going to reveal that 2 years had passed since Ash left pallet town, hence all the hints towards it, and Ash just forgets his birthdays.

What if Ash got a genuine Galar journey, without ‘hey remember this?’

Galar, and like in every pokemon anime timeframe is non-specific (for now heh heh heh)

Main characters

Ash - 10(?) years old, similar to how ash is in the X & Y anime, not immature but still young, has lots of experience (Spoilers: About 2 years worth), and is willing to pass it on to others.

Gloria - 12 years old, forced by her overbearing mother to wait a couple of years before she can start her journey, so naturally, she's very passionate about the sport, starts out iris/misty-like before character evolution hits and becomes the in-between of Serena/dawn and iris/misty character types

Hop Dande - 10 years old, young, and very similar to Ash when he started, but even more headstrong if you would believe it, he let being the champion’s little bro go to his head and thus thought he was champion material himself. Leaves at some point to truly learn how to battle and makes his return during the Galar conference.

Allister Nion - replaces Hop after he leaves, his arc is just to build confidence in himself.

Secondary characters

Marnie Nezu - ash’s rival (14) is pretty much the same in-game, the only difference is she and Gloria were once friends. 

Bede - Gary but worse, belittles Ash any chance he gets 

Leon Dande - is less stupid than his in-game counterpart, and is quite similar to Ash. 

Sonia Magnolia - introduces him to Gloria and hop

Prof. Magnolia - a wise old lady that gives our heroes their starters.

Rose Patak - is near 1 to 1 but seems like he’s hiding something. 

Oleanna Olive - fakes being motherly but is very very rude and angry underneath

Team Yell - is just a bunch of street punks that interfere with anyone they perceive as a threat to Marnie.

Gym leaders

Milo Yarrow - the stereotypical kind farmer’s boy 

Nessa Ruina - ash’s cool big sis in a metaphorical sense

Kabu Hibana - gives ash a mentorship program (tony stark peter parker-esque)

Bea Saito - antisocial but very kind also being mentored by Kabu (might become ash’s companion during the isle of armor)

Opal Poplar - kind old lady who mentors bede (being his reminder to be kind)

Melony Makuwa - kind and motherly off-field, an ice-cold battler on the field.

Gordie Makuwa - overconfident almost to a fault and really rude sometimes.

Piers Nezu - snarky but somewhat kind, and very protective over Marnie, but still her brother.

Raihan Kibana - I can't put his personality into words but he live-streams his fights.

Ash lands in Galar and is introduced to Sonia and Leon

Sonia then takes ash to Professor Magnolia to get his starter and he meets Gloria and Hop

Leon then takes him to Motostoke to announce the start of Galar’s gym challenge

Our heroes go to budew inn and meet Marnie.

Battle against some team yell grunts.

Our heroes than just hang out and bond

Milo gym fight: ash wins, Gloria wins, and hop needs a rematch.

After hop’s rematch milo teaches ash how to cook curry.

Gloria and Ash get into an argument over methods of travel.

Team Rocket gets the focus in this chapter James catches a galarian Weezing and Jessie catches a sandaconda 

Hulbury but Nessa’s gym is closed.  

As it turns out Nessa's prized Drednaw is very, very sick. Which ash cures with some herbs.

Nessa Gym Battle: Ash wins, Hop wins, Gloria rematch.

Gloria catches a Yamper.

Gloria's rematch.

Our heroes then go to motostoke

Before any of them fight Kabu the first team rocket clash happens

It's a near standstill, but team rocket blasts off due to Gloria’s Yamper and Ash’s Pikachu.

Kabu introduces himself to Ash and the two have a “Queens. Brooklyn.” moment 

Grooky evolves into Thwackey during Kabu’s fight. 

And ash loses but he’s not upset given both Thwackey has evolved and that Kabu is really respectful to him.

Ash goes and trains with Kabu and the two bond a lot.

Ash accidentally calls him dad and kabu is kinda flattered.

Rematch! 

And a great surprise occurs Pikachu can Gigantamax!

Everyone looks on in aww.

Ash wins and Kabu gives him the most dad-esque interaction ever.

“That was some real fighting, ash, great job!”

Hey there! You study antuquity, right?

Something I had a look at recently was an account by Poplar the Elder about a sort of half-evolution between Karrablast and Escavalier. He stated that if you gave a Karrablast only half of a shelmet's armour, that it would not fully evolve but would still adopt a partially armoured form with 'broken lances'. But perhaps most notably he referred to it as a 'Hypaspist' -An allusion to hellenistic armies as I'm sure you are aware. While in the middle ages we only have one or two Arcean frescoes depicting a 'Hypaspist' -and these depictions were probably based on Poplar's work. But considering the Hellenistic-based name, I was wondering if you've come across any evidence of this half-evolved Karrablast existing in any sources from antiquity?

apologies for getting to it late, life tends to life quite hectically. plus, i decided to do some further reading for this!

whilst the hellenistic period is something i've studied (one of my a-levels was dedicated to classical studies, and i took one module on the era this year), it's mostly a hobby at this point - i tend closer to medieval history now. however hammerlocke's library has a large source collection i was able to check out yesterday, and some were helpful for answering this.

so there was at least one account from a set of poems i was able to find from the period, that refers to a pokemon of a certain way. the translation used described it as "half-true", but it is likely that this is a metaphorical description for a potential half-evolution rather than actual pseudo-fiction.

one book (sheen, n. "the evolution of battle, 800 bce to 1500 ce", 1985) did include an interesting tidbit about battle formations from 100 bce, too, and ceramics and depictions from the time show armies working surprisingly extensively alongside ancient equivalents to escavalier and accelgor. and whilst some of the depictions on the artworks show unique pokemon that don't resemble either entirely, it's hard to say whether or not they are further evidence of the hypaspist or yet another ancient pokemon that we've not yet discovered. it seems likely that there was a potential evolution in such a manner, though, yes! if that is replicable in modern karrablast species, i wouldn't know. i've not seen any around, recently, to much dismay...

i would really recommend that book, by the way. it's got a lot of good historical background, alongside historiography from others in the field. there's a solidly sized section on kalosian warfare, i do believe, from 500 ce onwards.

A little update on Bladeless's story

I still don't think I'll be officially returning to writing my muses on here anytime soon, since I've recently started trying to make the outline for Bladeless's story. I'm still not entirely sure if I should go with text or comic format, but I've been thinking about maybe just doing text with occasional illustrations.

I know that due to my poor attention span, every project I start inevitably gets left unfinished, but... this one is actually showing some promise so far. There's just something about Bladeless that makes him bounce off of other characters REALLY well, and his story keeps on growing.

I get the feeling that it's going to get pretty long though, because I had decided to start from the VERY beginning of his life (in the prologue), where he and his siblings hatch from their eggs and grow up over time.

Currently I'm at the part of his life where he's wandering around in the wilderness, trying to figure out how to survive with all his broken blades. I won't spoil what I've been writing (in case I do finish this), but I feel like it kinda showcases how unforgiving life in the wild can be for pokemon (which is a reflection of what I know about real-life animals). Bladeless has to start thinking outside of the box in order to get by, and he ends up using a rock as a weapon in order to compensate for his poor offense. He would sometimes use it to knock down berries from high branches, but would also hurl it at low-level bird pokemon to hunt them. He would still be struggling though, because it's not guaranteed that he'll even find anything to eat every day. Sometimes there's just... nothing.

Anyways, this'll probably be my last post about Bladeless on this blog. I've been thinking that I really should start a new sideblog on my personal account where I can post my other art and talk about my non-Repliforce OCs. I also need a place to upload my fic about Bladeless, but AO3 grosses me out and Fanfic.net isn't as poplar as it used to be. So... I might just post my fanfic on the sideblog too. I've never done anything like this before though, so that's why I'm hesitating a bit.

If anyone has any tips for starting an art blog, I'd be happy to hear them. ^^

Pokemon Next Gen (Competition Kids): Marionette “Mary” Poplar

Marionette or Mary as she prefers to be called is the daughter of Bede and Klara. As a little girl, a lot of people often compared her to a doll given how she looked cute and how she loved Fairy-type Pokemon they also thought that it was cute how she wanted to train Poison-type Pokemon as well as Fairy-types, thinking that she was trying to decide between which type her parents mastered in. Like her father, Mary can be prideful but she’s very mellow as oppose to when Bede started out as a trainer and like her mom, Mary likes to perform and got an interest in doing something from show business but she didn’t know what until she found out about the new battle facility that combined Pokemon Contests, Pokemon Showcases, and the Battle Chateau so she traveled to Kalos to give it a try and ended up meeting Riley, Zach, Coast, and Acorn. With them, by her side, she managed to sign up for the facility and ended up enjoying it as she got to both perform and battle at the same time, she also enjoyed the thought of dressing up for each battle she had, even if she had to dress up like a denizen at first she still enjoys it a lot. Unlike her mother, she focuses on training her Pokemon and doesn’t like being doted on. While she does enjoy being called cute, she doesn’t want to hear it all the time, she also has an interest in being a pop singer like her mom but she’s too shy to sing in front of a crowd, but she will like to do it when she gets more out of her shell.

Her main colors are pink and purple. From pink, Mary is feminine and at times affectionate to those she’s close to. It also represents a part of her passionate side and her sensitive side, as well as her sweet side and her innocence. At times she can be immature and very girly, but she’s still a calm and compassionate girl who will always help her friends. From purple, she’s imaginative and sometimes arrogant but she’s also selfless. It represents how she wants to be her own person, she doesn’t want to be a gym leader like her father and while she does admire her mom for being a pop singer, she wants to try her own thing before she actually goes through with being a pop singer. Purple often helps Mary get inspired and it gives her a lot of empathy and it helps her stay control in her emotions. Both colors also represent the two types she uses, pink being Fairy-types and purple being Poison-types.

Her Pokemon:

Spritzee- Mary had received her Spritzee as a gift when she was ten years old and the two of them have been best friends ever since. Spritizee is a friendly Pokemon, she loves to meet new people and new Pokemon and she has a fondness for letting her trainer smell any of the scents she creates and she’ll happily flutter around Mary to spread it around her. Despite her small size and the fact that she’s still unevolved, Spritzee is a capable battler and is great for contest-like battles, she’s also one of Mary’s stronger Pokemon due to how well she was trained since both of them were young. Spritzee also has no problem with unleashing a foul-smelling scent to anyone who makes her angry and she will laugh to herself as she watches her victim cringe in disgust. She doesn’t fear Poison-type Pokemon and has no problem dealing with them due to training against her teammates over the years.

Ability is Healer.

Moves are Sweet Kiss, Fairy Wind, Draining Kiss, Sweet Scent, Attract, Psychic, Trick Room, Aromatherapy, Moonblast, and Gyro Ball.

Dustox- Mary caught Dustox back when she was a Wurmple, she was hoping that her Wurmple would evolve into Dustox as she thought that Dustox looks cuter than Beautifly. She was ecstatic when her Wurmple had evolved into Cascoon and was even happier when she finally got her Dustox. Dustox is a proud Pokemon, she also loves to have her time in the spotlight. Dustox works hard to make herself look as appealing as possible due to how she knows that most people think Beautifly is more appealing than a Dustox, she also has a personal vendetta against Beautifly and will always try her best to one-up any Beautifly she faces against or sees and she will become deeply upset if she looses against a Beautifly, thinking that people are right but then she’ll snap out of it and will train harder against any other Beautifly.

Galarian Weezing- Mary had gotten her Galarian Weezing back when he was a Koffing, she had evolved him before her journey to Kalos so he evolved into his Galarian form. Weezing is loyal and kind Pokemon, he also doesn’t seem to care if someone looks at him strangely since he knows that regional variants are something not many people have seen before. Like Spritzee, he will use his gas on someone should they insult Mary in any way. While he doesn’t understand much about contests or performances, he does his best with Pokemon battles and he tries his hardest to make his battles look appealing instead of just making it a straight-up brawl.

Moves are Double Hit, Strange Steam, Sludge Bomb, Toxic, Venoshock, Dazzling Gleam, Flamethrower, Play Rough, Sludge Wave, and Dark Pulse.

Galarian Slowbro- Mary caught her Galarian Slowbro back when he was a Slowpoke, after a while of training him she had let him evolve thanks to giving him a Galarica Cuff. Slowbro was a rather tense Pokemon, especially when he feels Shellder biting on his arm, he’ll end up flailing around and will sometimes attack whatever was close to him. After a lot of training, he calmed down and no longer is so tense when he’s in battle and it’s thanks to his quick reflexes that he’s able to make dance-like movements when he’s battling. When not in battle, Slowbro is laid back and he often zones out or just relaxes. He still trains hard so he doesn’t end up getting rusty.

Moves are Shell Side Arm, Psychic, Ice Punch, Trick Room, Poison Jab, Sludge Bomb, Future Sight, Shadow Ball, Drain Punch, and Belly Drum.

Wigglytuff- Mary caught Wigglytuff when she was a Jigglypuff and around the same time she had caught Clefairy. When she and Clefairy had heard of these competitions that Mary was going to take part in, both of them were happy to agree to compete and was ready for whatever Mary needed them for. The two of them evolved when Mary managed to get a Moon Stone for both of them. As a Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff loved to dance more than sing as she felt she wasn’t that great at singing anyway so she spent more of her training dancing with Clefairy showing her how to dance while she showed Clefairy how to sing. After evolving, Wigglytuff still expressed a love for dancing and kept up her dancing skills to make sure she could still dance with her new body. Despite not having an interest in singing, she still likes to sing with Clefable so long as they’re together as both of them are mates. They’re ideal for being together during double battles as they work perfectly together.

Moves are Charm, Hyper Voice, Play Rough, Draining Kiss, Psychic, Wish, Helping Hand, Thunderbolt, Wake-Up Slap, and Double-Edge.

Clefable- Mary caught Clefable when he was a Clefairy and around the same time she had caught Jigglypuff. When he and Jigglypuff had heard of these competitions that Mary was going to take part in, both of them were happy to agree to compete and was ready for whatever Mary needed them for. The two of them evolved when Mary managed to get a Moon Stone for both of them. As a Clefairy, Clefable likes to sing more than dance as he felt like he wasn’t that great at dancing anyway so he spent more of his training singing with Jigglypuff showing him how to sing while he showed Jigglypuff how to dance. After evolving, Clefable still expressed a love for singing and kept up his singing training to make sure he could still sing with his new body. Despite not having an interest in dancing, he still likes to dance with Wigglytuff so long as they’re together as both of them are mates. They’re ideal for being together during double battles as they work perfectly together. He often gets jealous if Wigglytuff’s Cute Charm ability activates on a male Pokemon.

Moves are Sing, Life Dew, Metronome, Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, Focus Blast, Sweet Kiss, Meteor Beam, Retaliate, and Cosmic Power.
