You’re so right !!! I think he’s so used to seeing relationships in magazines and on tv, this fantastical romantic performance of falling in love and chasing and yearning; that he doesn’t see what’s exactly in front of him. And that’s on him being kinda dumb. Aki sees it instantly; the way you talk more animatedly, seeing them all more, always looking for Denji when you enter a room, searching for his praise and assurance and opinions, subtly fluttering your lashes and pressing yourself against him, asking if you looked pretty and getting a “yeah sure princess” in return.

God does it make your tummy tighten when he calls you that.

He’s so oblivious sometimes, but with very specific things. Denji knows when an advance is being made, he’s hot and cute and of course people have made passes at him so when you touch his thigh or measure your hand against his; he knows you’re sweet on him instantly. He’s all about touching you, getting touched in return so when it comes to the sweet talk and flirtations you shakily send to him; Denji balks and freezes up. He knows something’s up, that you’re trying something with him but he’s nervous and a little unsure with your compliments and adoring questions. He’ll answer you sure, asking for a twirl if you’re wearing something cute or agreeing that those two sweet old seagulls are the two of you but it’s with sweaty palms and a furrowed brow.

He wants to kiss the back of your hand like the good guys in movies do but he’s kinda sticky and he’s to embarrassed to rub his palms on his jeans - so you do it to him instead, bowing politely and kissing the back of his knuckles softly, lips pillowy and all he’s ever dreamed,

“Did Aki also tell you to ask me out? Cause that’s so cliche of him,” you giggle and sigh in some kind of defeat, looking down at your feet, “I didn’t think you’d catch on, thought I might’ve been too shy yknow? My sister always told me I had to be more confident if I wanted a boyfriend,”

Denji fizzes at the word. Boyfriend. His ears twitch and he puffs out a nervous laugh,

“S’cute that you’re shy,” he fishes something out of his pocket, a paper bag filled with three red bean taiyaki, kind of squashed but still warm from the street vendor, “I was kinda stupid about it to be honest, m’not used to the attention like that - the cute shy kind,”

You inch closer and cup his hands around the bag, visibly flustered but braving the intimacy. Your fingers brush his as you open the crinkled paper, pulling out the fish-shaped pastry and Denji swallows so thickly, he’s scared you heard,

“So?” You tear the fish in half and simmer at the steam hissing off the crimson filling. Denji blinks stupidly when you hand him the tail,

“Uhh, so what? Did you want the tail instead?”

Somewhere in a kitchen, Aki sneezes and curses his roommate.

“So d’you wanna be my boyfriend?” You nibble on the flaky pastry, humming at the sweet taste and Denji wishes he was the cause of your pretty noise. Your question sends him sagging with a weird kind of relief, glad you asked him instead of the other way around because he’s sure he would have probably either sounded too nonchalant or thrown up with anxiety over his wording of it,

“Only if you wanna be my girlfriend,” your cheeks heat up and Denji smiles brightly, shoulders hunching in an effort to get closer to you, biting into the cake with a noise of appreciation,

“I asked first you dummy, that’s not how you’re suppose to - you’re so silly sometimes Denji,”

He’s spooked. Eyes wide when you surge forwards, crushing the bag of snacks to his chest and leaning up into his personal space. Out of instinct, Denji leans away from you but you’re instant, eyes closed and lips parted.

You kiss him. Chaste and warm, nose bumping his and he nearly rips the bag he’s still holding, annoyingly. It takes him a second to respond, shocked at your boldness considering your previously shy nature but he responds either way. Denji cranes his neck down, forcing you backwards a little and you squeak at his reciprocation, mouth open and teeth nipping your lip. He can taste the taiyaki on your breath and you clutch at his wrists sandwiched between your chests with a sweet little sigh. The two of you part after a moment, his cheeks dark with flush and it feels like you’re shaking,

“You’re still silly,” you mumble and he lets out a heavy breath,

“M’your silly now,”

“That doesn’t even make sense oh my god,”

it seems to me that this entire chapter is denji killing that part of himself that cares, which he was still able to grab onto his own humanity. he's absolutely visceral here, mistaking his want to be chainsaw man for a want to ONLY be chainsaw.

and the worst thing is that we can't even blame him for giving everything up. he doesn't even have a home now, everyone is betraying him yet again, a cult and the government are throwing him around like a toy, the only girl that didn't hurt him was seperated from him... truly, nayuta was the only thing holding denji up. but, it became way too many things to pile up.

speaking of her... golly darn!!! this stung, a lot. specially since this came right after denji told her she was the most important thing in his life. i don't think he truly means this, and i don't believe he's saying this out of malice. it's more denji's final ember of care for nayuta.

he wants nayuta to be away from him so he doesn't hurt her, he can no longer keep her safe. nayuta IS the control devil, she is powerful, but she's also a child. it's not like she can fight against those people alongside chainsaw man, since i don't believe she is feeling superior to anyone at the moment AND this fight is way too crude for someone without any real battle experience.

chainsaw man grins, hugs, attacks and even hecking CANIBALIZES at the same time. it really shows how unhinged denji is right now. he never willingly took hits for pure "enjoyment", but he did exactly that now.... it's even weirdly intimate when you take a closer look at that happens during the fight. a part of denji is confused, looking for comfort, but he doesn't have time to rationalize his anger and need for care in a right way, smashing it all up together.

also, i'm super interested on how miri's and denji's relationship will develop from here !! will miri revaluate his decisions until now? will he lose faith on denji? will he be scared shitless? i'm extremely excited to see it. miri sugo is so interesting, he does have good intentions, but is being manipulated by barem to do wrong things while believing he's doing the right thing. comitting to other's wills was his downfall. sounds similar? (COUGH COUGH part 1 denji)

anyhow, this chapter succeded my expectations. the art had a glow up, the story was turbulent and scrumptious, it really left me thinking the whole day about it. poor nayuta... poor denji.... poor miri... 😭 i just want these little guys to be okay.

i wonder how nayuta will try to pursue denji, which she definetly will. at some point. maybe even form an alliance....???? (reze mayb??? blood fiend? asa?)

denji update-

its been rough especially today but since the evening he's been doing better. earlier today he had to go back to the ER cus he was throwing up but the ultrasound came back clear. after that we couldnt get him to show any interest in food whatsoever which the vet warned us is really concering, in such cases he wld need to go back in for iv fluids. he also couldnt lay down by himself.. eventually me n slimbo put him on the bed and after a long nap he was showing appetite again and ate some rice mixed w baby food <3

this is just really intense, i knew it would be & i was dreading it but nothing can rly prepare u to SEE your baby in such paralyzing pain. over something so preventable sigh. (for those who didnt see my post a few days ago my denji golden had to go in for emergency obstruction removal surgery after eating a ziploc bag, i deleted the post cus i didnt want it to start popping up on ppls recommended lol the tone was a little panicky.)

need your thoughts on csm and particularly part 1 now that you're caught up

I think my immediate reaction on finishing part 1 was like

loved the art, loved the characters def feel like the story has a lot further to go thematically, only really picked up for me with the reveal of the gun devil

I now think CSM's strength in the early arcs is the patience of the construction of Denji as an everyman resisting the reality that the promised capitalist horizon he imagines is a lie.

now that you can tell the horrible direction my thoughts are going in I will continue under the cut, this is so long oh god. cw: canon typical violence, sexual assault etc.

Initially the repeated invocation of wanting to kiss a girl and eat a good meal as ultimate dreams and Denji being presented as an idiot for it felt like a cheap way for readers to get to root for him in a very Naruto sort of way yk? Poor orphan boy wants a basic life. This is disrupted right from the start ofc, starting with the Himeno's assault and Makima's whole deal. I think this construction becomes more valuable in part 2 when with Nayuta there is a very intentional attempt to construct a family, where the horizon is a normality that includes saving up for college. Nayuta's resistance to some of it becomes more interesting than just jealousy or protection imo.

I think the complications of the "workplace" as it functions for Denji in part 1, living quite literally under Aki's supervision with Power invokes the very familiar team as family stuff under threat. The explicit knowledge of how he has exchanged one debtor for another is v effective especially when they take care of Power. You have him and the readers being forced to confront that purpotedly transactional relationships do not exclude the sort for the simple honesty of care we idealise. And that the care will be weaponised anyway. Aki's abortive attempt to opt out is chef's kiss.

The reveal of the use of the gun devil by nation states might functionally be the first moment Denji is forced to acknowledge the complicated incentives of the Bureau. You get to link the exploitation of people to the more obvious rot in liberal institutions. Part 2 then ratchets this up with the discourses on propaganda and mass participation.

I thought the "Killing of Makima" involving the use of the Bureau insiders led by the old man leaned a little too much on their heroism, vibes wise but I also get why narratively that needs to be done. Which is why Kobeni is so important to me lol. The art and creativity on display at the end of Part 1 was like gorging yourself on one of those early pictures of Paradise. The apartment scene could get read as Makima's personal cruelty but I think it's just making explicit the cruel seductions of modernity etc etc. As a violation of Denji esp. it is almost complete, structurally taking the form of kink and the parody of care after. Mwah.

With that, the reconciliation of Denji's past and present when his past in debt bondage is also constructed with the societal complicity about domestic violence becomes delicious. Nayuta is reborn out of a cannibalism not really done in the service of personal survival and def not out of a commitment to self sacrificing heroism.

I'm excited for Part 2, Asa esp lets you get at some of the same neuroses Denji has as a teenager but from a gendered perspective. Her relationship with Yuko is some of the strongest bit of writing about bullying and justice I have read in a while. I've enjoyed the lead up to Fami and War's apocalypse so far, but their motivations are still a little inscrutable and fallback on devils, wyd? despite their sisterhood. I think Fujimoto's focus seems to be the public discourses around devils in this arc, so thats probably why it feels like that but I'm personally always interested in all of it.

I got into Chainsaw Man during the time this blog was in a coma! if that wasn't obvious already ^-^

Fellow and Guidel growing up in poverty reminded me a lot of Denji and Pochita, and I listen to CSM ost often these days I'm only drawing Fellow as Makima for funnies because they both manipulate others without them knowing, and absolutely nothing else. he's too boyfailure for that.

"The country mouse gets to to live in safety, but doesn't get to eat delicious food like they have in the city. The Town mouse gets to eat delicious food, but runs a higher risk of being killed by humans or cats."

I've also been thinking of this line with them lately, either they live honestly and barely make anything when society rejects them as it is, or work at Playful Land despite its horrid conditions if it means their survival

in which I also headcanon that Fellow's drive in doing this in the first place is his envy, and to fulfill a sense of revenge towards people who get to live normal lives but fell for a "free ticket" the same way Pleasure Island also existed as a metaphor to punish people for giving in to hedonistic desires. So that's why he put up with it for so long especially under his greedy bosses

Not a lot of people talk about how as much as Fellow cares about Guidel, he still roped in a child into this job alongside him and exposing him to this sort of stuff, so I was hoping it'd be discussed more when analyzing their bond together and not just fellow's backstory (or whatever crumbs canon gave us), and that's what I had in mind when writing this

theres nothing wrong with finding guidel cute and silly! hes a cute little guy who is very much loved by his older brother, his... very irresponsible brother. but I think that's why I can still come to love Fellow and how raising and protecting Guidel could've played a bigger part in his change at the ending when he stops everything to start a school instead

I was really hoping that Stage in Playful Land would also give us Ortho-Guidel parallels the same way with Idia-Rollo and how they dealt with their grief in Glorious Masquerade, but this time with "little brothers" and their attachment to their "older brothers" but their autonomy outside of them being brought into question

Anyway, I was wondering how the Playful Land operations would impact Guidel, so I was thinking Fellow probably bullshitted some reasons so it isn't merely just guidel following his brother but also being in on it (that, and middle schoolers are built different.)

This worked until the NRC students brought up something sensitive to them, which was school, and it takes the veil off Guidel's eyes and ears for a second about what they're doing and what sort of lives he and fellow could've had seeing the nrc students have so much fun
