In the 9th century, a German woman named Joan disguised herself as a man to follow a lover into his studies. She ended up being incredibly successful, and eventual moved to Rome, where she was elected Pope in the year 855. She served for about two years, but her sex was discovered when she gave birth during a public procession in the Vatican.
This story comes from the Chronicle of Popes and Emperors written by Papal Chaplain Martin of Poland in late-1200s. While the historicity this story – recorded some 400 years after it is meant to have taken place – is dubious, its presence in medieval conciousness did lead to some interesting conversations about gender: whether and why women should be excluded from the Catholic priesthood; how to define what a woman was at all; and how intersex people could be taken into account.

I’m sick of the localizers putting feminine diminutives for words that do not need them. Please just call Pope Joan the pope not “Popess” please I’m begging -

ConsJoan shippers/Pope Joan fans are weird. When I saw the Restoration Realm insignia in Constantine XI's newest CE, I posted on Twitter asking if the CE is about Traum Constantine. Nowhere in the post did I attack Pope Joan or the ConsJoan ship, but somehow Joan fans assumed that I hate Joan and was trying to attack her!? Then they talked about me behind my back in their Discord (which they forgot that I was also in there). When they remembered that I was also in the discord, they changed their tone about me. I was annoyed by that and left the discord room. I don't think it were brave of them to do that, they should have at least talked to my face.

"His mind was of a rigidly conventional and unimaginative cast, so he disliked the give-and-take of reasoned argument, preferring the safer ground of authority."

Summoned Joan and Constantine's non canonness is Ok, Actually, because *Joan* is the one designated as our bestie while Constantine is the one dipping us low, kissing us gently and revealing he prepared a romantic getaway this weekend
