On Thursday, the Social Security Administration announced its largest cost of living adjustment for beneficiaries in four decades, an inflation-driven raise of 8.7% that will take effect in January 2023. That increase matches the average annual COLA from 1975 through 1982, an era of recessions and high inflation. Annual Social Security raises declined after that year. From 1996 through 2021, they averaged 2.3%, and were zero in some years. The 2021 raise was substantially higher: 5.9%.

The new increase in benefits will be pricey. On the other hand, the cost to taxpayers of the entire Social Security program pales in comparison with the cost of federal subsidies for rich Americans enrolled in private or supplemental retirement plans, such as individual retirement accounts (IRAs). According to Federal Reserve data from 2019, only 31% of households from the poorest half of the wealth spectrum contributed to such a plan, while 91% of households in the top wealth decile did.

This suggests that low-wealth retirees rely heavily or exclusively on Social Security, but all US workers get to collect benefits starting at age 62. As of last month, nearly 66 million Americans, rich and poor alike, were getting monthly checks. Most are retirees, but there are also spouses, disabled workers, survivors of deceased workers, and dependent children. The largest and best-compensated group, the retired workers, averaged $1,674 a month, or about $20,000 per year.

The SSA now pays out about $1.2 trillion a year in benefits all told, but those outlays are largely funded by payroll taxes paid by workers who will later reap the benefits. In 2021, the price tag of the entire program—benefits plus administrative costs—totaled $1.14 trillion, of which $1.09 trillion was covered by payroll taxes, income taxes on benefits, and interest. In other words, the federal Social Security subsidy was only about $50 billion.

Compare that with subsidies for private plans and IRAs, which cost the government nearly eight times as much—about $380 billion a year, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. And unlike Social Security subsidies, these subsidies skew heavily toward the highest earners.

There’s a reason I noted the year 1996 above. Before then, as I point out in this earlier exposé about America’s retirement system, private retirement accounts were strictly regulated and not heavily subsidized. Starting that year, federal lawmakers—led by then Reps. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), began introducing bipartisan retirement “reform” packages that pumped more and more federal dollars into bolstering private retirement savings, mainly to the benefit of high-income workers and Wall Street.

University of Virginia law professor Michael Doran, who dug deep into the subject for a January 2022 paper titled, “The Great American Retirement Fraud,” suggested that lawmakers, rather than helping rich Americans shuffle even more of their money into tax-­deferred or tax-exempt retirement funds, could instead pass laws to benefit Americans who actually need help in retirement. That might include simply beefing up Social Security, he wrote.

Instead, yet another bill that benefits wealthy savers sailed through Congress. And Republican Rick Scott released a set of aspirations for his own party—an 11-point “Plan for America,” of which one provision would let all federal laws “sunset” every five years—including laws governing Social Security and Medicare.

I WAS UNWANTED — that's all I have ever known since I was born to this world of cruelty and evil; tranquility serving as a veil of illusion that everything was under control in this land of blood and chaos.

My name is Avalon LeFay Peregrine — the very daughter of the youngest and most gifted ymbryne of the peculiardom; Miss Alma LeFay Peregrine — I am only sixteen years of age inside the loop, but when I step out of its protection, I am decades older than my physical appearance.

Misunderstanding is what sets people on fire, but fear not, there would be not a trace of flame of misunderstanding in what I'm about to say — My mother loves me with all her heart, all of my flaws, all of the things I wish I did not have; even though sometimes, she trembled intensely while crying her heart out; holding back sobs as she apologized why she couldn't look at me for so long.

Ooh the internet is getting REAL WEIRD for me these days. It wasn't until after he died that I learned the reason my paternal grandfather was so into college sports (especially basketball) was because he thought professional sports were rigged, so college ball fandom was the only pure and honorable option. It's taken me a while to get into Conspiracy Grandpa status but it's starting to happen in a very particular way.

Specifically, I find myself seeing the way people craft their internet identities and output and saying: I don't believe it. Recently a young woman's thrift haul went viral on TikTok for being impressive and jealousy-inducing, then broke containment and went viral on Twitter where a lot of people were mad at her for scooping up cheap duds and reselling at a premium.

The original impressiveness of the video was supposed to be about buying a lot of desirable clothing all on the same day from the same store — I watched the video and was like, how are we supposed to believe that unless we watched her shop live? Twitch-streaming a purposeful skulk down the aisles of her local Goodwill?

Maybe she was collecting the best bits from a few different trips and combining them. After all, you don't go viral for buying just a couple cute things. You go viral for extremes: the most, the least, the cutest, the cheapest, the "most insane". I edit videos for a living and you have basically 2ish seconds at the beginning of a video to get peoples' attention so you can promote whatever it is you need to promote (in that thrifter's case, her cornucopian Depop shop). Your chosen thesis statement better be Entertaining.

Now there's a woman who has gone viral for being a tradwife, breasting boobily around her house and making terrible-looking home-baked bread for her alleged husband. The whole thing is sooo cosplay, and everyone's getting so upset about her content that they are forgetting she is not a housewife at all — she is a content creator. If you look at her Instagram from before she picked this particular Shein Marilyn Monroe Don't Worry Darling-style personal brand, she was trying to be a fitness influencer, posting about gains and doing that thing where you place a barbell over your hips and thrust vigorously.

The current internet is built for being reactive to the smallest and most impactful bit of information available. It is why people freak out about tweeted headlines without reading the full article, and why that account Pop Crave loves taking celebrity quotes out of context and riling up bloodthirsty fanbases for engagement, and why you can see one video of a "tradwife" looking like a Mad Men extras casting reject and don't bother looking back in her post history to see her recent-past self, striving in contemporary spandex and using hashtags like #fitfam.

That Natalie Portman movie Vox Lux was terrible but it had a silly line in it that I loved, where Nat's deranged Staten Island pop star character talks about personal branding for artists: "“It doesn’t matter anymore if you’re Michelangelo, or if you’re Mikey and Angelo from New Brighton. All that matters is that you have an angle." Internet fame is the carrot dangling on the stick, and to catch the fame, you need the angle, and you edit what you need to edit in order to hone your particular angle. In a sea of thrifters, you must get the most "insane" haul. In a sea of identical blonde fitness influencers, you must find a path of lesser resistance. Sweating to the oldies, indeed!!

Can you be mad at these people? I would say mostly I am impressed. I am excited to see in particular which sponsors the tradwife will secure in order to fund her future endeavors, because I do not believe her supposed single-income household will provide the financial backing she will need once she reaches higher levels of internet fame/infamy and wants a lifestyle to match. After all, the main brands who do influencer marketing are generally those who cater to girlbosses, not tradwives — subscription meal kits for homemade flavors on a time budget, blue light-blocking glasses for long days spent content creating on the computer, online therapy for the anxiety caused by capitalism.

That's the last question you need to answer when you are making content for free on the internet - where will the money eventually come from?

walking before she crawled, amelia was a combination of stoicism and heart. she was never an easy one to pin down and made sure of that. growing up in the bones’ household there was a constant push-pull of how to present oneself. it felt like she and her siblings had to choose sides. their mother, yael, was full of light, love and compassion. their father, uriel, was all business, no play and his family was second to his career. it’s no wonder amelia was torn between who she should be. she saw edgar come to blows with uriel but gentle with yael. she saw edgar’s obvious struggle and didn’t want to repeat it so she learned to keep any bubbling emotion inside. she wasn’t going to allow anyone to see a weakness in her. whether she liked it or not, she was unconsciously following in uriel’s footsteps more than she imagined she would. she longed to have the warmth her mother had but she saw what would happen to with too soft a heart. amelia only gave her heart to those she deemed worth it. and when she did, she did she did it hard and strong. never an easy one to pin down.

growing up, amelia was lucky to have the siblings she did. they didn’t always get along but that was the nature of siblings – loving them and shared annoyance at the same time. she wouldn’t let him know it but amelia looked up to edgar. he was strong in a variety of ways and she, without his knowledge of course, wanted to make him proud. she longed for the wherewithal to stand up for herself no matter who liked it or not. amelia wasn’t one to stand up for herself the way he did. whereas she saw others abuse “standing up for themselves,” amelia learned to keep her composure. she wanted to be seen as having her life together, even if it made her appear cold to those who didn’t know her. — which couldn’t have been further from the truth.

while at hogwarts, the sorting hat surprised her. she assumed she would be placed in ravenclaw. her smarts and curiosity – they were all things she knew she had at just eleven years old. however, amelia didn’t realize that the sorting hat saw other prevalent traits inside her. gryffindor traits to be exact. remaining curious, amelia didn’t ask the hat to place her in ravenclaw. she trusted its insight and was happy to discover parts of herself she didn’t know were there. at such a young age, amelia was more in tune with who she was than those in her year; she was more in tune than others in years ahead of her, to be honest. as she grew, the courage, loyalty and bravery became obvious to her. of course she would be placed in a house to teach her to look inside and find more of herself. it was this that propelled her forth.

as a child, amelia never suspected she would be the type to fall in love, get married or have children. for perhaps the only time, the universe had a twist for her. she found a boy – or rather, a boy found her – following a game of quidditch. she was a beater for her gryffindor house. she was sweaty and in full gear, making her tiny frame much bigger than she actually was. her helmet covered most of her face yet this boy approached her. she had no recollection of who he was or why he would come to her in the aftermath of a quidditch game but there was something endearing about it. amelia found herself wondering about him. eventually that wondering turned into feelings. those feelings turned into honest love. the love could have turned into a wedding but amelia would have her heart broken before that happened. she turned back to believing that her work was where she was meant, not as a wife and definitely not a mother. the wedding provided a beautiful life. one day she would find out what the universe had in store for her and what a surprise that would be.

even before the war began to explode, amelia knew she was meant to assist in keeping order in london. the wizarding world was far too important to her to have vile witches and wizards in the streets. she needed to know she was doing her part for the safety of the innocent. she needed to be a watchdog, a protector – and a member of the wizengamot her father took for granted prior to his death. although she had started in uriel’s footsteps and although she took the spot where he once sat, amelia took her vows to mean something much different. for her, it was not about power. for her, it was about caring for those she walked by on the streets whether she knew them by name or not. if that wasn’t growing into a combination of uriel and yael nothing was. even if it wasn’t intentional, amelia found herself taking some of the best characteristics of both parents — her mother’s love and grace and her father’s passionate iron fist.

amelia’s decision to join the order of the phoenix was not taken lightly – just as any decision she made. she weighed her options and took her entrance into the side of the war she saw just and fit. although there was no chance amelia would come to the side of the death eaters, she did look into what it would mean and where it would bring her. staying neutral appeared to be a solid choice but the problem with that was that it didn’t keep scum away from families, children – the world – at bay. the order. it appeared to be the best option. it was aligned with reasons she became part of the magical law enforcement department to begin with. so it was: amelia would join the dedicated group fighting for the good cause, the just cause. the good cause had always been amelia’s and there she found herself, proud of where she stood in life.

Born August 13th 1942

* William was born and raised in England

* He was born to a military father and an unstable mother

* He had a good relationship with his father. He was the only thing keeping his mother stable

* He also had 3 older siblings

* His father raised a strict military household, raising his children with fear tactics

* William, still being only a child, loved his father more than anything anyways

* In 1944, his father died in Normandy

* His mother broke to pieces over this, and became even more unstable

* She became neglectful and borderline abusive

* She turned to drugs and alcohol to cope

* William was forced to be raised by his older siblings, who blamed him for the death of their father

* The death of his father made William absolutely terrified of the concept of death

* William also began to show signs of antisocial personality disorder and severe OCD, but in a neglectful household, these signs often go unnoticed

* He was a troubled kid in school. Extremely intelligent and charismatic, but troubled nonetheless

* He often did questionable things, such as killing small animals or suggesting sadistic activities

* He also had an extremely misogynistic view on women, viewing them only as incubators

* He was rather good looking, which made it easy for people to dismiss his actions

* His goal was to go to America and be an engineer

* He originally wanted to go into the army, but his mom flipped out when she heard that, going as far as to physically threaten him

* This incident resulted in him having a chipped canine tooth. He never got this fixed, as he didn’t have the money or motivation

* His mom passed away of a drug overdose when he was 16

* At 18, he decided enough was enough and he immigrated to New Jersey

* Henry was the kindest soul William had ever met (which isn’t saying much, considering he’d never been shown real love before)

* He was selfless, caring, fun loving and kind to everyone he’d ever met

* Safe to say, the two hit it off immediately

* They went to the same college in New Jersey for their undergraduate degree (Henry in business and William in mechanical engineering)

* Both of them went to a small college in Utah for their graduate program, getting a head start on their business

* They bought an apartment off campus together that they lived in

* Eventually, they started to develop slight feelings for each other

* They would do things together that most boys in the 60s would never do together

* William would go out with girls on occasion, but none of them ever made him feel the way Henry did

* One day when they were both 25 and drunk, they hooked up

* William got irrationally angry, screaming at Henry and blaming him for “ruining everything”

* He stormed later that night, where he eventually encountered Clarice Portman in a bar

* She flirted with him and he slept with her, seeking revenge on Henry

* He gave her a fake number after leaving the next morning

* He spends 2 weeks avoiding Henry at any cost, making Henry worry especially about their future business

* 2 weeks later, he sees Claire at his front door

* She’s pregnant with his child

* He had no intention of marrying her or even being involved in the baby’s life

* But after Claire’s family found out, William was harassed and pressured into marrying Claire

* Henry, though slightly heartbroken, was more than excited for William, even becoming a second father figure to Michael

* The four of them moved to Hurricane Utah to start their first restaurant

* Everything was decent for a while. William’s urges to kill had been greatly reduced and his OCD had calmed down a bit. He was a family man now

* Claire pampered him and showed him love. So much love

* He tried to appreciate it and reciprocate it but he just… couldn’t

* His business with Henry was also going downhill. Business was a lot harder than it seemed

* His life was kind of shit. Money was tight, Claire was no help, and on top of that there was the new baby

* In 1970, he and Henry are finally able to open FredBears

* It’s an immediate hit

* William quickly started to up his paycheck… and up his workload

* His OCD started to get bad again and he was starting to get violent irrational tendencies

* William is the epitome of Jack from The House That Jack Built

* He would spend all his time either sleeping at home or working

* Whenever he did attempt to spend time with Claire or little Michael, it would turn violent with him taking his frustrations out on his family

* Every day Michael would get smacked upside the head or yelled at by William

* On one stressful day when he was facing a lawsuit for moldy pizza, he beat Claire until she was unconscious

* But this wasn’t enough to satisfy his violent tendencies

* In 1974 on a Saturday night, Claire got pregnant again after William came home from the bar to a drunken Claire

* Michael was also starting to become adaptable, starting to become a golden child to his father

* Later that same year, Claire gave birth to Elizabeth

* But he still couldn’t get rid of his urges

* In 1975, he discovered the perfect outlet

* Who had ruined Williams life? Henry after that one night they shared together

* What’s the best source of revenge for taking away his life? Take away the source of his life

* Outside of FredBears, he ended the life of Charlotte Emily

* The itch had finally been scratched

* Henry was devastated. His only daughter. Gone

* His beloved Charlie was dead. He had no idea what to do

* He ran away back to New Jersey. William never saw him again

* Even though FredBears had shut down, William had never been happier

* So happy that he decided to finally sleep with his wife

* But when she refused, he couldn’t help but get violent

* That’s how Evan was conceived (and later born in 1976)

* The next few years, he no longer had to spend his hours trying to think of ways to feed into his violent tendencies. He could finally focus on his business

* Claire came in handy with this. Her secretary job got him a partnership with Fazbear Entertainment

* He didn’t spend much time with his kids or his family

* Whenever he did, the interactions were typically negative

* Michael was starting to get mouthy and sarcastic. He was a little dickhead in his eyes

* Elizabeth, on the other hand, was his favorite. She reminded him of himself in many ways

* And Evan? Well, Evan barely existed to him

* He came up with a foolproof plan: use the animatronics as weapons. Fazbear Entertainment was simply a front

* He spent his days locked away in his basement working again

* He had a deep hatred for his family (a slight exception for Elizabeth though)

* He didn’t see them much thankfully

* He was irritable constantly

* In 1980, the plan with Fazbear finally came through. Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza opens up with 4 new animatronics (all four with their bellies hallowed out)

* FredBears also reopens

* Michael gets a small part time job helping out at the restaurants. His children love going to them as well. His wife starts working again. Everything is a hit

* In 1981, his murderous batch of circus animatronics are finally finished. A third sister location is planned to open too

* He also discovers remnant. He’s always been scared of death. Maybe he could actually cheat it

* He tests it out on his new batch of animatronics

* He tells his kids to stay away from them. Even he didn’t know if this was reverse psychology or not, since he knew Elizabeth would love the animatronics

* He told Elizabeth he made the main one (Circus Baby) just for her, since she loved clowns so much

* Yet he told her not to touch her, knowing full well that Elizabeth was exactly like him and wouldn’t listen

* He should have seen it coming when Elizabeth died that day

* Though he would admit he was a little sad (it was a genuine accident after all), he decided to not waste time mourning and to use the opportunity to see the effects of the remnant

* He knew Elizabeth was trapped in Baby

* That’s when he knew what he needed to do. He needed to kill more. Not only would it scratch that itch, he could finally live forever

* In the same year, his wife was finally fed up with him

* After the death of Elizabeth, she couldn’t take it anymore and was finally standing up for herself

* She tried to run away with his remaining kids. He couldn’t have that

* Thankfully, his charisma kept her in check

* He won custody in court with flying colors

* He never saw Claire again after that. Her body was discovered in the lake the next day

* Michael was acting out of line with teasing his little brother. Not that William cared. He was too busy studying remnant

* It was Evan’s birthday on June 30th 1983

* Evan was terrified of Williams animatronics. He was there when Elizabeth died, after all

* Michael wasn’t. Michael only knew that an accident happened and that it was covered up by saying there was a gas leak

* Therefore, the depressed, hormonal, angry Michael bullied his brother to no end, pulling all kinds of pranks on him with his Foxy mask and at FredBears

* Michael’s prank on his brothers birthday went a little too far

* Michael wasn’t aware of the spring locks or how they worked

* Evan died later in the hospital

* Michael was a wreck afterwards. William couldn’t care less though

* In 1985, William killed 5 children and put them in the animatronics, using the Spring Bonnie suit. The itch was scratched and he got to study remnant more deeply

* But the animatronics started acting odder and odder. William had no idea why

* In 1987, Michael moved out and a new and improved Freddys opened up after the last one shut down

* He killed 5 more children. But the animatronics kept acting funkier and funkier

* He needed to find out a way to get rid of the souls

* He used the decommissioned Circus Baby (with Elizabeth’s soul inside) as a test subject

* He obviously didn’t want to go down there. Going down there could risk death

* So he sent Michael, capitalizing on his guilt

* He got a call more than a month later. Michael had died, yet he was still alive. He knew what William had done and was going to do everything in his power to stop him

* In 1993, Freddy’s closed down. The animatronics with the childrens souls closed away

* He had to get rid of them. He went back one rainy night to decommission them

* If he decommissioned them, they couldn’t get him

* After he decommissioned them, he found himself surrounded by the souls of the children he killed

* Terrified of what the vengeful spirits would do to him, he climbed into the spring bonnie suit. They couldn’t hurt him in there

* But the rain mixed with the nervous sweats worked against him

* William Afton died a very painful death that day.

* Yet he was still somehow alive?

* He spent 30 years locked away in that room, feeling his own corpse decaying inside him

* Until one day, he was found. He could finally go out into the world

core: dragon heartstring;; produced wands with the most magical power, and which were capable of the most flamboyant spells. dragon wands tended to learn more quickly than other types. while they could change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bonded strongly with the current owner. the dragon wand tended to be easiest to turn to the dark arts, though it would not incline that way of its own accord. it was also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.

BIO.

walking before she crawled, amelia was a combination of stoicism and heart. she was never an easy one to pin down and made sure of that. growing up in the bones’ household there was a constant push-pull of how to present oneself. it felt like she and her siblings had to choose sides. their mother, yael, was full of light, love and compassion. their father, uriel, was all business, no play and his family was second to his career. it’s no wonder amelia was torn between who she should be. she saw edgar come to blows with uriel but gentle with yael. she saw edgar’s obvious struggle and didn’t want to repeat it so she learned to keep any bubbling emotion inside. she wasn’t going to allow anyone to see a weakness in her. whether she liked it or not, she was unconsciously following in uriel’s footsteps more than she imagined she would. she longed to have the warmth her mother had but she saw what would happen to with too soft a heart. amelia only gave her heart to those she deemed worth it. and when she did, she did she did it hard and strong. never an easy one to pin down.

growing up, amelia was lucky to have the siblings she did. they didn’t always get along but that was the nature of siblings – loving them and shared annoyance at the same time. she wouldn’t let him know it but amelia looked up to edgar. he was strong in a variety of ways and she, without his knowledge of course, wanted to make him proud. she longed for the wherewithal to stand up for herself no matter who liked it or not. amelia wasn’t one to stand up for herself the way he did. whereas she saw others abuse “standing up for themselves,” amelia learned to keep her composure. she wanted to be seen as having her life together, even if it made her appear cold to those who didn’t know her. — which couldn’t have been further from the truth.

while at hogwarts, the sorting hat surprised her. she assumed she would be placed in ravenclaw. her smarts and curiosity – they were all things she knew she had at just eleven years old. however, amelia didn’t realize that the sorting hat saw other prevalent traits inside her. gryffindor traits to be exact. remaining curious, amelia didn’t ask the hat to place her in ravenclaw. she trusted its insight and was happy to discover parts of herself she didn’t know were there. at such a young age, amelia was more in tune with who she was than those in her year; she was more in tune than others in years ahead of her, to be honest. as she grew, the courage, loyalty and bravery became obvious to her. of course she would be placed in a house to teach her to look inside and find more of herself. it was this that propelled her forth.

as a child, amelia never suspected she would be the type to fall in love, get married or have children. for perhaps the only time, the universe had a twist for her. she found a boy – or rather, a boy found her – following a game of quidditch. she was a beater for her gryffindor house. she was sweaty and in full gear, making her tiny frame much bigger than she actually was. her helmet covered most of her face yet this boy approached her. she had no recollection of who he was or why he would come to her in the aftermath of a quidditch game but there was something endearing about it. amelia found herself wondering about him. eventually that wondering turned into feelings. those feelings turned into honest love. the love could have turned into a wedding but amelia would have her heart broken before that happened. she turned back to believing that her work was where she was meant, not as a wife and definitely not a mother. the wedding provided a beautiful life. one day she would find out what the universe had in store for her and what a surprise that would be.

even before the war began to explode, amelia knew she was meant to assist in keeping order in london. the wizarding world was far too important to her to have vile witches and wizards in the streets. she needed to know she was doing her part for the safety of the innocent. she needed to be a watchdog, a protector – and a member of the wizengamot her father took for granted prior to his death. although she had started in uriel’s footsteps and although she took the spot where he once sat, amelia took her vows to mean something much different. for her, it was not about power. for her, it was about caring for those she walked by on the streets whether she knew them by name or not. if that wasn’t growing into a combination of uriel and yael nothing was. even if it wasn’t intentional, amelia found herself taking some of the best characteristics of both parents — her mother’s love and grace and her father’s passionate iron fist.

amelia’s decision to join the order of the phoenix was not taken lightly – just as any decision she made. she weighed her options and took her entrance into the side of the war she saw just and fit. although there was no chance amelia would come to the side of the death eaters, she did look into what it would mean and where it would bring her. staying neutral appeared to be a solid choice but the problem with that was that it didn’t keep scum away from families, children – the world – at bay. the order. it appeared to be the best option. it was aligned with reasons she became part of the magical law enforcement department to begin with. so it was: amelia would join the dedicated group fighting for the good cause, the just cause. the good cause had always been amelia’s and there she found herself, proud of where she stood in life.
