I can’t tell if this supposed to be slightly sarcastic with using Bonnie’s full name, tone is hard to tell from text, but I think it’s an even tie?

Rietta doesn’t really try with the goth stuff, she’s just a vampire so. Yknow, kinda happens a bit naturally

Bonnie tries to go for the goth look, but shes also kinda unfocused and doesn’t go all in on it. It’s just part of her aesthetic, even if it does make her look cute!

In my mind these two begrudgingly work together but ultimately fight all the time. They are the only few people to know of each other’s past identity before joining the assassins guild: Rietta the Duchess of a fallen house, Ace a child of a demon. Rietta didn’t think he knew, though.

So here, Rietta reminded Ace of his failed attempt at killing the royal sorceress only because she happens to be his long-lost sister. Seething, Ace shot back

….got his ass handed to him since she’s a lot stronger. At least he’s satisfied.

Rietta I of Faysmond, age twenty-six. This is her yearly formal photograph, a portrait of her in state intended for mass production. Unlike most previous years, she sits rather than stands. Her court gown, dripping with various sorts of intricate lace representing different regions of Faysmond, engulfs her, as does an impressive train swept in front of her. The glove of her left hand is removed, revealing her famous emerald engagement ring and wedding ring. Seven of Blackberries: The Blackberry Bushes Heist AU

Drawn together by a desperate queen, a team assembles for the heist of the new 20th century.

The Client: Rietta, the young queen of Faysmond, sequestered in the country under the thumb of her corrupt Regency council, needs to get some of her fortune back before her government exiles her mother and destroys the nation. Robbing her own vaults may just give her the power she needs to take back her kingdom.

The Mastermind: Elystan, rumored to be the disgraced prince of Corege, may seem fragile, but he's the mastermind behind a rising criminal operation who's all too eager to get into the good graces of a foreign monarch while bringing the powerful to their knees.

The Forger: Amarantha has been Elystan's right hand for years. She's never afraid to call him out, suspicious of any newcomers to their circle, and a master of forgery rivaled by few in the continent.

The Scout: Rachel, has no interest in the criminal life, but as the queen's best friend, she's drawn into the plot, and her meticulous eye for detail makes her a natural at the work.

The Wild Card: Josiah, exiled prince of Lienne, fell in with Elystan against his will, but his love for the young queen moves him to lend a hand with the heist, despite his personal objections to the leader.

The Muscle: Tamett was once Josiah's servant, driven into exile by his master, but now drawn into Elystan's gang and loyal to all their plans. His athletic skills, love of mischief, and athletic skills make him an ideal thief, but he's torn between two masters who may not have his best interests at heart.

The Poisoner: Delclis, Elystan's brother and king of Corege, seems to be in league with the very government that Rietta wants to dismantle, and the knowledge of poisons gained from his botany studies make him a formidable opponent indeed. But there may be more depth to the king than his bitter brother assumes. The team keeps running into Delclis in the seedier parts of town--is he trying to foil their plans, or could he be a valuable ally?

For Rietta…

She was named by a friend! I don’t really. Talk to that friend anymore, but they gave me the idea for her name and it stuck!

I also don’t remember how I came with the idea for her. But “short, weird and kinda uncouth fancy chef vampire who’s black and is snarky” was a good end point for her! Mostly because I wanted her to be different than the stereotypical vampire. She’s like… the cat/raccoon equivalent of a vampire. In being a weird short lady, of course. And that’d you 100% find Rietta in your kitchen in the middle of the night with the lights dimmed, her eyes glowing creepily as she rummages through your food to make something good.

A lot of her personality, or at least the baseline of “looks sweet and friendly, but has a bit of a temper and is a bit of a loser” originally was Sina’s (one of my ocs) before I ended up developing her more. It suits Rietta better, given that she’s just a short vampiric chef and not a big time crime boss.

And despite being in her fifties and partially playing into the “vampires age slowly much” trope, Rietta does physically look like a thirty/forty year old! She was born a vampire, and while she’ll stay spry for a good long while, she is aging and she does have blemishes.

Speaking of, as a vampire, Rietta can jump, run and fly relatively fast still despite being portly. Granted, she’s not going to pounce on someone to drain them of all their blood, but she CAN hop around pretty well and easily get up in your face.

Oh, also, she can echolocate! Because while her type of vampire doesn’t have bat forms, they do carry bat traits. It’s also why Rietta tends to sleep wrapped up and rather enjoys fruits as well!

(And as a finisher, Rietta doesn’t burn up in sunlight, her reflection shows up in the mirror, she can enter anywhere she pleases, and really enjoys garlic! So don’t try pulling any of that shit on her, Rietta’ll just get pissed and nag you.)

Bonnie

As you can guess, Bonnie has the BRIGHTEST fucking smiles you could ask for! Ever her small ones are full of love and hope, and you can tell she pours her heart into it. But, when she’s really really happy, she does do a bit of a goofier smile- like, yknow how horses pull their lips back to show off all their teeth and gums? Bonnie does it too! Granted it’s silly and much, much cuter, but it’s still a thing she does! Because just because her face is human doesn’t mean she still doesn’t, yknow, have horse instincts!

And, as I’ve tried to show off with those sketches of her I did that are tacked to her bio, Bonnie wears black lipstick in her day to day life! It’s supposed to help with her goth vibes, but she also wears it because it makes her look cuter than normal! Her lips are naturally soft and plush though, so coating them just makes them look prettier. It also means that she has a tendency to get lipstick on the back of her teeth when she bites her lips sometimes, but she always gets time to reapply it! Same for when it ends up wearing off when she’s smooching a cutie ;)

Rietta

I’ve said this plenty of times before but Rietta has like. Smug cat vibes to the max when she can really get going. Other times, she has to put on a cutesy smile to try and get people to buy her goods; other times she’ll give her mischievous little grins and smirks to folks who deserve it. She also has tends to bare her fangs no matter what kind of smile she has, since it’s kind of just vampire nature to wanna show off your chompers! Her genuine, “I’m not prideful I’m really emotional in a good way” smiles are super precious though and if you ever see one of them, know you should treasure it and she treasures you.

Like Bonnie, she’s got lipstick on too! Granted I’ve been thinking about changing it from a generic gothic black to maybe some kind of dark blue? I want something that emphasizes that Rietta’s supposed to be different from the generic vampire but goes with her color scheme.

Barlai

Barlai is an absolute bitch. Her smiles are huge, her mouth is huge and her eye teeth (canines) are all meant to be huge—not just in an menacing way, but in a way that kinda looks goofy in the sense that they’re rounded down but still very large and still kinda sharp. (Her bites might also inflict some kinda status thing? I don’t fully remember!)

Given that her tongue is purple and that color carries over to her saliva and the rest of her, her smiles and smirks and grins all have a sort of air of “mean”, “I’m better than you and sexier too”, “I fucking love messing with people” and just emanate an absolute aura of big bad bully bitch energy. If she flashes any sort of smile at you, you better be worried if she hasn’t gotten to you already! And even if you’re on her good side? She’ll still probably have something planned for you (which might be good or bad depending on how you view her mischief and meanness)

And you know how I said that her tongue is purple? You’d prolly think that the same applies with her lips, right? Nope! She actually uses a special type of makeup meant for the undead to make sure that she’s got purple painting the rim of her smirks and sneers and smiles so she can tease you better with them! Also because, of course, theres nothing better than a big bitch of a bully marking you up and leaving several sorts of imprints on you >;3

Predictably, may I please have an OC of your choosing?

I chose this scene from A Constellation of Six because it’s been in my head since I first read it and was the first image that came to me when you were deciding which short story to revisit.

Perfectionism strikes again and until today left me unwilling to commit to something less spectacular than the image inside my head, and that’s my only excuse for why this took so long. The pose itself came together fairly quickly despite no references on that account, and the rest was a breeze thanks to your research. In the end I gave up on the background and scribbled the night over everything except the two of them, but funnily enough what remained after that came much closer to what I’d imagined anyway.

#Nyella is so wonderfully complex (like all your characters really) and I’m fascinated by the contrast between the warmth and lightness she #is to Josiah (I like that her gown is white because she’s like this beacon of safety to him and I got to try to bring some of that #out visually) not to mention the bright loving and curious woman she is for her own sake #vs the relatively young and inexperienced woman that she is when it comes to handling her stepdaughters—and Josiah when it comes to the #possibility of needing to discern the truth and discipline him! #And while I relate a little too hard to Josiah’s fear of the dark (at that age I was terrified for sure) and can certainly #understand and sympathize with his thought processes a great disservice was done to him as well as Ayra in the matter of the broken watch #Because I’m also all too familiar with his desire to stretch the truth to or outright lie to make himself look better #And by not even doubting what he said when Ayra had insufficient reason to lie *and* a witness on her side then I can guess that #The habit that gets him into trouble by book 3 had the seeds of it planted here. #ANYWAY I love how it turned out in the end. I tried a dressing gown for Josiah but I liked just the striped pajamas better #Bare feet are hard but I didn’t consider the possibility of slippers till just now oops #Nyella’s hair at first resembled Rietta’s a tad too much so I smoothed it out #Birthday sketches #I’m working on the next one already but wow what is up with me this month???

For no reason: this is what I imagine the OCs' voices sounding like.

Rachel: Soprano, but not excessively high. Rather softspoken and has trouble raising her voice. Has a distinctly higher and more precise "polite voice" for handling Social Situations but switches to a lower, more wry tone when among peers.

Rietta: Mezzosoprano. Bubbly, warm, and expressive, with a wide range of tones. Naturally louder than Rachel and significantly more confident in expressing herself.

Delclis: Will probably mature into a baritone once his voice is done changing. Sounds like he's reading lines off some unseen cue card--a bit monotone, not a lot of inflection or emotion. Tones tend to be softspoken and gentle, making it a surprise whenever he does raise his voice.

Elystan: Probably won't hit his voice change until at least Book 4. Usually a thin, somewhat nasal voice, unless he's been coughing a lot, which leaves him hoarse. Tones are not warm but very expressive. Tends to have a smirky quality to his voice when he's in a good mood and a whiny quality when he isn't.

Amarantha: Will probably be a mezzosoprano when her voice finishes maturing. Serious, measured quality to her voice, like she's weighing each word. Tends to sound tight and intense but shifts into a warmer range when she's feeling relaxed. Usually quiet but not afraid to raise her voice when angry.

Tamett: Just starting to go through a voice change at the beginning of Book 3. Lower, somewhat husky tones. Tends to sound bored or weary but not monotone. Much louder at home than when at the palace.

Josiah: Voice starts to change somewhere around the middle of Book 3. Stiff, precise, overeducated tones. Not especially emotional but not flat or monotone. Tends to sound pompous and smug. Generally quiet but not soft or timid-sounding.
