Director’s Cut!
"It's a rare edition these days. Keep this between us, but with Whiterun's neutrality, my buyer can't exactly come marching up the city steps." "Stormcloaks?" Wyndrelis murmured, stepping closer. Belethor shook his head. "I'll give you a hint, if you're so keen to know." He made a sweeping motion with his index finger along his ear, bringing it up high along the side of his head. Emeros' blood ran cold. "Thalmor," he whispered. He'd recognize the Breton sign that indicated standard Thalmor earcuffs anywhere, the shape of an eagles wing that would arch out from the ear of whatever Justiciar wore them. Belethor nodded gravely. "And if he doesn't get what he wants, well..." Belethor trailed off. Eventually, he turned on his heel, murmuring about writing a letter, something about a delay in the shipment, no problem, he'd miraculously get his hands on another edition, leaving the three to watch him as he shut the door to his shop. Athenath looked from Emeros to Wyndrelis, then back again. Wordlessly, the trio split to wander separate parts of the city, the conversation repeating in their minds like a stanza in a particularly cruel poem.
OOOOOOOOOHOHOHO okay there is a lot in that scene and i love it, thank you for sending this! >:3c
alright. with this scene, my main goal was to show that, well, there are consequences to not getting enough information and just grabbing whatever was wanted (whether to themselves or to others). athenath's actions in the previous chapter - stealing the Book of the Dragonborn - was done with good intent at the end of the day (hey, you and your new friends were just told you're dragonborn? okay, cool, get information on what that means), but… well, it was impulsive. and dangerously so.
this scene is like a warning, in a way. athenath stole something that was being sold to a thalmor justiciar (ondolemar, actually), but had no idea that was the case because they didn't even bother to search for information, didn't think this through, just went "i need this, he has it, i'll take it". if athenath had more foresight, they would have thought to check records in the shop, and while this wouldn't have changed their mind right now in the story, it would make him think this over a bit more. he would have hesitated.
it also acts to prop up the next chapter's conflict between emeros and athenath, two people who despise the thalmor for different reasons. some personal, some moral, and gives me a great way to show their perspectives. and it shows that while athenath is a damned good thief, that doesn't mean he always makes the best decisions. in my notes on this chapter, i have the sentence: "With how severe the consequences for Belethor could be, Athenath's impulsivity has the potential to cause genuine harm to others."
also it gave me a chance to give a nod to my headcanon thalmor jewelry >:3 which i need to draw more art of, bc it's very fun.
thank you again for sending this ask!!!! <33333333333

Postcards from Snagglepuss
"Ocean City, here we come!"
So here we are, Huckleberry Hound and yours truly, sitting in a somewhat cheesy-looking motel near one of our former hangouts back in the day, Kings Dominion by name, about halfway between Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia, having driven along US 1 as opposed to I-95 much of the night through Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia following quite an interesting diver's holiday with Peter Potamus and the Hair Bear Bunch off the Florida Keys.
Said motel, it turns out, being something of a staging area for many of us fellow Funtastics heading to the Character Convocation planned and timed to coincide with Springfest out Ocean City, Maryland way in a weekend's time.
Think of Springfest, if you will, as a sort of summer prelude on Maryland's Eastern Shore, particularly before the major crowds come over and turn an otherwise docile town of some 7,750 people (that's the year-round populace) into Maryland's third-largest city (as in as much as 163,000 people) on busy weekends. And the contingents of fellow characters bound to arrive ahead of same as a convoy of sorts, prompting Huck and I to find a party room of sorts nearby to explain the logistics of the warmup to Springfest as much as Springfest proper ...as well as a more direct, logically logical even, routing into Ocean City from our staging ground:
I-95 to US 301 (Virginia Exit 104), crossing Fort A. P. Hill and the Potomac River via the Nice-Middleton Bridge into Maryland, picking up US 50 near Bowie;
US 50/301 via the Bay Bridge to the route split in Queenstown;
US 50 to Maryland 404 near Wye Mills, continued into Delaware and joining US 113 near Georgetown;
Continuing on US 113 to the junction with Delaware 20, thence on Delaware 20 and 54 to practically the Maryland line, becoming Maryland 528 and, hence, into Ocean City proper.
Which, at any rate, means plenty of overtime for our trusty cell phones, and plenty of charging time as well, just to remind the whole contingent, Ruff and Reddy onwards to the Skatebirds, Kwicky Koala and even Crazy Claws--the Funtastic sort of crowd, mind you--of developments and the meetings ahead.
"And there's also the crab dinner to think about," Huck admitted.
"Not to mention," added I, "the meet-and-greets. Especially along the Boardwalk and at an outlet mall, even!"
So just be thankful that we're not turning to strong liquors as the way to maintain steady nerves as things press forward. And there's more of this where it all came from....

“Federal Plans to Aid the Jobless,” Kingston Whig-Standard. October 28, 1932. Page 7.
----
Dominion Opens 28 Camps to Level Landing Fields
---
(Special to The Whig -Standard)
OTTAWA — Relief plans by the federal authorities to meet unemployment thla this coming season now shape up as follows:
Twenty-six camps along the route of the future Trans-Canada airway are being opened up by the department of national defence for the purpose of clearing and leveling landing fields.
Temporary camps are being established under the department of the interior in the national parks at which brush clearing and road building will be carried on.
A relief settlement scheme along the lines of "back to the land” — sometimes known as the "600 scheme” — is in effect in eight provinces. Up to October 14, 943 settlers with 2187 dependent had been established on land in the different provinces.
The placing of men to work on farms, by which the farmer will receive $5 a month from the government and the man receives a similar amount, will be in effect exactly as last year when 9,500 took advantage of the scheme. This year the number is expected to be larger.
Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan have in operation work camps for the single unemployed men, toward the financing of which the federal government pays half. The work to be done is mainly roadwork.
Some public works are being completed, the cessation of which would have been detrimental. This will give employment to men up to the end of the year though in decreasing numbers.
For those who do not come within any of the above schemes, the federal government will continue the direct relief contribution of last winter. The organised municipalities are contributing one-third, the province one-third and the federal government one -third. In unorganized districts, province and the federal government share fifty-fifty.
In the provincial road camps, the men are paid from $5 to $7.50 month and are given their board and housing, with acme provision either by the municipality or other agency in most cases for clothing.

Something I made around Halloween-time, based on a Sisters of Mercy album cover. I liked the idea, and the album being from ‘87 and having a sax solo right in the opener helped it along 🎷
(I’m still around - may post some more relevant art going forward)
