Robe à l'Anglaise, c 1740–60 ℹ Women with coquettish airs were imposing in robes à la française and robes à l'anglaise throughout the period between 1720 and 1780. ℹ The robe à l'anglaise developed with a fitted back after the style of dress worn in England. The silhouette, composed of a funnel-shaped bust feeding into wide rectangular skirts, was inspired by Spanish designs of the previous century and allowed for expansive amounts of textiles with delicate Rococo curvilinear decoration. ℹ The wide skirts, which were often open at the front to expose a highly decorated underskirt, were supported by panniers created from padding and hoops of different materials such as cane, baleen or metal. ℹ The robes à l'anglaise are renowned for the beauty of their textiles and the meticulous fit of their bodice back. I really love the embroideries of the 1780s robe parée style, of which this drawing is an example. The robe parée is somewhat mysterious - I have seen arguments that the term is itself a nineteenth-century anachronism, and that it refers more to the occasion or to the embroidered style than to the actual shape of the gown. Dress created by the Atelier of Rose Bertin (probably) for the Queen Marie Antoinette (and altereted in the late XIX century) The clothing items belonged to her and survived until today are very very rare so this is an incredible and stunning piece. Robe à l’Anglaise | c. 1790 • • • This dress beautifully illustrates the relaxation of fashion between the American and French revolutions. With wide hoops now reserved for formal occasions, hips were still padded but the silhouette was bouncier and new emphasis was placed on the bosom. To accentuate this shape, dresses with tight-fitting backs, called robes à l'anglaise, were preferred; often made of lightweight cotton, these could be delicately embroidered, as in this open-skirted, trained robe. On the front bodice, satin forms an inverted stomacher called a "zone."
