That one is also @upatreewithoutaharness's fault! It's a rule 63 fic in which the amis go to a masquerade ball, and Grantaire goes dressed as a sans-culotte (and also a very silly pun). What's the actual plot? Don't know, I just wanted an excuse to make them lesbians tbh.

The ballroom is baroque, and hideously gaudy, even if the chandelier is no longer real crystal, and she suspects the silverware of being merely silver-plated. The walls retain their elaborate carvings and fine wood-panelling, though many of the paintings and tapestries that must once have added to its grandeur have been stripped out, leaving only patches of silk that are less discoloured than their surroundings as evidence of their former placing. The floor is polished to a shine that reflects the pools of yellow light with a water-like quality, seeming to shimmer as the dancers' heels flash across it like fishes surfacing in a rippling pond. Even the ceiling is embellished; the painted cherubs that smile benignly down on the dancers are a plump, pink-cheeked reminder of the exorbitant wealth and sickening inequality that permitted its construction.

Being present in such lavish surroundings, even if her motivation is to further their cause, feels unseemly; insensitive, to the reality faced by those many in this room would claim to serve. Almost all the great and the good of Paris's fashionable society that are present tonight would claim to be progressive in their politics, though a distasteful number of them have welcomed the new Louis with open arms.

She can almost see the ghosts of the Ancien Régime lingering in the shadows. The backs of the chairs that line the edges of the hall still bear traces of powder from the wigs of long-dead aristocrats.

The bourgeoisie, Enjolras has long decided, are little improvement.

Would she be more feminine? What would her temperament be like? Would the abuse have been less or worse based on being the only daughter? complaint time? complaint time! let's talk about my annoyance relating to sapphic, especially lesbian, characters, relationships, and mxtx! because apparently, i love kicking hornet's nests these days (this isn't new, i just usually confine it to dms). this got long, my apologies, so it's going below the cut.

first off, i'd like to clarify that i am not talking about fanfic that makes mxtx characters sapphic/lesbians. i think that's great. i love rule 63. if you want to write these men in an au where they are sapphic, i have been there and support you wholly. this isn't what that's about, though—this is specifically about mxtx.

i've seen the same sentiment over and over trying to go through the chinese gl tag (baihe): people wishing mxtx would write about sapphic characters, wishing that mxtx would write sapphic novels, etc. and honestly, this pisses me off for a few reasons: my thoughts on how mxtx handles lgbt characters generally, the way that these posts clog the tag, and, finally, the way people going "wish mxtx wrote sapphic novels :( too bad she didn't, i guess there's no sapphic cnovels!" cheapens the extant, vibrant baihe field.

one: my thoughts on how mxtx handles lgbt characters

first of all, i'd like to preface this by saying this is only going off of what i know about mxtx, and mxtx works. as far as i'm aware, mxtx is a straight woman, writing about same-sex male relationships. she's the author of svsss, mdzs, and tgcf. i don't know if she's written anything else, but for this post, that doesn't really matter. let's go over these, shall we? mdzs' main couple has a rape kink, svsss' main couple is a teacher-student relationship, and tgcf's main couple is a man who saved a young child who later grew up to worship him. this isn't a judgement—i am a tgcf fan, so i'll be upfront about that; i think the way that specific scenario is handled in canon makes sense, and isn't objectionable to me specifically because of the way it's handled. i haven't finished svsss, and i haven't read mdzs, so i can't make commentaries there. i simply say this to point out the fact that, generally, mxtx couples play into a number of uncomfortable stereotypes about gay men, especially that their sex lives must be particularly "freakish", or that they must be older men pursuing younger men, especially those who idolise them. whether or not this is the message intended in these works, and whatever the characters themselves may think about these situations, they are not their own, real people; they are characters created specifically to be the way they are, by an author who is not a gay man. you can probably see why i, as a lesbian, do not want her writing lesbian characters specifically, and sapphic characters generally.

point two: posts like these clog the tags

any time i scroll the baihe tag, i inevitably run into at least one post where people wish that mxtx would write sapphic characters. while i understand wanting your favourite author to write about characters you feel better represented by, the truth of the matter is that when people make these often-one line posts that aren't actually related to baihe content in any way, and then tag them as #baihe, this leads to the clogging of a tag meant to be specifically filled with content about and surrounding baihe works.

point three: these posts draw attention away from extant baihe (chinese sapphic) works

as surprising as it may be, sapphic cnovels exist! there's actually a decent number of them, in fact. not many are fully translated, but there's a few big ones that are—and, i would say, the quality of the ones that have been translated are at least as good as extant mxtx fantranslations. baihe suffers from being ignored by the mainstream and official english-language publishing/translation houses, for a number of reasons that would take an entire post to even begin to try and unpick, but it does exist. however, when there's a bunch of people acting like no baihe exists and wishing their favourite danmei author would write baihe so it would exist, it creates the false illusion that baihe doesn't exist, drawing attention away from extant baihe—and thus perpetuating the tendency of those in fandom spaces to only ever talk about and promote male-centric works, and erase or marginalise female-centric works, as well as sapphic fans themselves.

in conclusion: i don't have a solution to this. i'm just frustrated by the tendency to act like mxtx is the paragon of lgbt fiction in cnovel spaces, and the way that, rather than looking for extant sapphic cnovels and characters, people seem far more willing to wish that mxtx would write sapphic novels, something that i, as an individual lesbian, think is a foolish idea, and just a generally annoying sentiment.

Sweet Damsel, a genderbent/Rule 63 AU

Ed thinks she can go back to the way things were before Stede, but Stede is determined to find her and make amends. (4102 words, one-shot.)

Something was niggling at her attention as her crew swarmed over the little ship and confronted its men, but she shook it off and continued staring at its mistress, who had backed up to the far rail. She drew her sword, hilt decorated with a multicolored knot of ribbon, and held it before her: high enough to be a threat, but not high enough to really be a threat.

“Sweet damsel,” Ed began. That had been a line in a story Stede had read the crew one night while they all sat on deck together, and it had struck her at the time as unbearably romantic. “I’m afraid we’ve come to ransack your yacht, but have no fear, I won’t harm you.” That had been a line Stede had used one time when Ed had let her try to menace a ship’s captain, and it just felt right.

I wrote so much for an end note that I decided to just ramble here beneath a cut.

Fun with anachronisms! If the show can have Pinocchio in 1717, I can surely represent chemise gowns and big hats as Caribbean fashion in the same period.

I’m a little obsessed with the idea of fem!Stede and fem!Ed because my own gender presentation is ludicrously feminine in such a way that it’s still rather queer and stands out – I wear full skirts with petticoats and have curly hair down to my waist, and pre-Covid I was a big fan of bright Besame lipstick. So while conventional wisdom might be that a cis female Stede would find it easier to fit into her colonial society, I can see how being “too feminine”/falling into negative feminine stereotypes of the period could have been an issue for her (and she’s still autistic anyway, imo), though at the same time she has plenty of “unfeminine” interests that would also be seen as a problem by society.

Female Ed fascinates me in another way because, just like in canon, liking fine things doesn’t necessarily mean she’s “feminine” or that some kind of biologically essentialist innate female drive is pushing her into her assigned role. She’s a fancy butch who likes to wear nice perfume. I did give her a different pirate name/title, because “Blackbeard” stretched the limits of my suspension of disbelief. “Blackmane” refers to her wild, curly, Natasha Lyonne-esque black hair.

At first I thought I would have Izzy still be a cis man, but that introduces a weird dynamic I don’t like, so she’s a toxic lesbian instead.

It’s amazing how switching the genders immediately triggers the “am I allowed to do that?” alarm in my brain. Oooh, romantic conflict between women, is that sending a bad message? If I make Izzy a femmephobic butch woman, is that implying that I think all women need to embrace stereotypical femininity? It never occurred to me to interpret every single thing related to female characters in my writing as either and only good examples or condemnation until fandom started doing it.

I think this is at least the third reunion I’ve written and I love that it’s utterly unlike the others. I have NEVER speculated that Ed might want to steal some of the Gentleman Pirate’s shtick and impress a potential aristocratic victim with fancy clothes and manners, but it suddenly seemed totally rational, probably because I’m weak for gentlemanly butches. I do read a lot of metas, though, and people have been pointing out that Ed’s not angry about Stede leaving, he’s sad, so I was trying to envision what the reunion might look like if we deliberately avoid the angry!Ed characterization. It’s a lot quicker.

Asjdkljsakldjlsa Stede is the kind of person who desperately loves the idea of having her chin raised with the point of her rival’s sword, she absolutely engineered it to happen and she was hoping Ed would be angry enough to hold her that way for a while. Maybe even to slice open her chemise gown a bit. So there’s an audience, she trusts them all to look away if there’s too much skin to be decent.

I’m casting Juliet Stevenson as Izzy. I think she’d play the role well. Maybe Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell for Ed, although she’s slightly on the young side? I don't know who to cast for Stede yet.

This is not the last of Izzy! I just feel like in canon, we’re going to see something like what happened in Ted Lasso s2 with Nate, i.e. leaving to become more of a villain. And then presumably coming to realize that a huge mistake has been made and making amends. I am actually a proponent of Izzy redemption in the long run, don’t take this ending as my thinking the best thing would be for Izzy to disappear forever. I may come back to this AU ’verse and write her return.

Where is Lucius in all this? Still hiding or something, I don’t know.

2022 was not a bad year for femslash fanfiction.

In particular, 2022 was a surprisingly robust year for femslash. No polyships made it to the top 100, tragically for me. But there was a 10% increase in women of colour!

Which means +5.

But still!!!!! Nice work, everypony!

On a personal note, I focused primarily in 2022 on collecting fics with trans characters, which makes f/f recs that much harder for me to give.

But!! I do have some bangers!

These are listed in order of my bookmarks, not in order of preference.

First up (thus, the most recently bookmarked) is this Yu Gi Oh fanfic featuring Rebecca/Téa(Anzu)

At 4k words, it has a roughly 20 minute read time and is terribly sweet. It's not fluffy, mind you, just heartfelt in a way that little autistic lesbians will relate to. It follows many years of Rebecca's life, from learning about sex, to learning about girls, to learning about the trials of being an adult.

Next up, this Deltarune porno featuring Noelle and Susie.

It's about going into heat as a consequence of HRT as a deer. It's Very Good, if you're into that kind of thing (I am).

This next one is for a fandom I'm not in and will have to copy paste the name of.

Fandom: 山河令 | Word of Honor, with the ship Wen Kexing/Zhou Zisou

It's breeding kink porn. It's Really Fucking Good breeding kink porn. This is distinct from heat porn, to be clear. These characters are specifically trying to have kids.

Next is Utena fic. I mean is it REALLY femslash February without Utena and Anthy? Is it really?

This is a gore/horror/delirium piece with some truly compelling and hypnotic wound fucking.

Next, let's talk genderbends. Specifically, let's talk this rule 63 by way of transition Harry/Draco piece. Obviously I'm a big believer in violently ripping HP away from JKR and letting fans use the framework to make better things. And this is one of those better things!!

A sweet but emotionally brutal little piece about realizing you like girls in a gay way because you are one. Only, you're an adult and quite a famous one, so it's Very Stressful Actually.

This last one is far and away my personal favourite of the list. It's a Young Justice fic, though because it's from early in the canon and diverges hugely, you really only need basic familiarity with the concept of Superboy as a character. The ship is Supergirl/M'gann(/kind of Kaldur, who is kind of a girl at the time)

God it's so fucking good. It's so good that it literally caused me to start a trans-and-t4t collection on ao3. I want everyone on earth to read this goddamn fic. It's not really focused on the femslash, it's more of a gender fic, but still!! The premise is simple. A magical attack swaps the sexes of everyone on the team. They all experience crippling dysphoria, save the already fluid and alien M'gann, and Superboy, now Supergirl, who for the first time in her miserable life ISN'T dysphoric, but has no words for any of the joy, or the fear of going back.

That's enough recs for now, surely?
