It was the day before Mahiru's birthday.
He and his mom were at the supermarket shopping for groceries. As they passed the bakery section, Mahiru saw a cake in the display fridge. It was just simple looking cheese cake with no frosting or toppings But it looked like it would taste good, and it was cheap! So he begged his mom to get this cake for his birthday. He probably didn't notice it then, but he remembered his mom looking sorry for a short moment before finally relenting.
When they finally reached the cashier, Mahiru was bouncing off his feet. He couldn't wait to have this cake on his birthday tomorrow! But then-
"Sorry ma'am, but I'm afraid there's not enough in your card."
Mahiru didn't fully understand how 'cards' worked for adults, but he knew what 'not enough' meant. Just as his mother was fretting over the payment, he took the cake away from the cashier.
"It's ok Mom. I can just put the cake back. We don't have to buy it."
It was the obvious choice. They needed everything else, the cake was just an extra expense. He tried to ignore the looks and whispers from the other shoppers as he made his way to the bakery section.
Suddenly, the cake was lifted out of his hands. "I'll pay for the cake."
Mahiru looked up to see who it was that offered to pay. It was a man who was standing behind them in line. He had white spiky hair and green eyes. He was super tall, probably taller than Uncle Tooru.
"O-oh! You don't have to do that, sir!" His mom quickly said to the tall man.
"It's fine. I'm not really buying much for myself. I can just pay for the cake." The tall man started rubbing his ear for some reason. When Mahiru looked at the the man's basket, it was filled with instant noodles and bottled water. Even so, the man still paid for his things and the cake as well. Mahiru thought that he would just leave after that.
Except that wasn't all he did. Not only did he pay for the cake, he also helped to bring the groceries back to their apartment. As it turned out, Arago-san (he later told them to call him that) was renting the apartment right next to theirs.
Mahiru had heard about guardian spirits sent by the deities. Maybe Arago-san was one, it would explain why he was so pale.
Suddenly, Mom got a call from work. She needed to help cover a shift for one of her coworkers. And Uncle Tooru was also busy with work. Koyuki and Ryuusei were also busy that whole day, though they didn't tell him why. Which means that Mahiru was going to be home alone the whole night.
Which was fine. Mahiru's a grown boy anywa-
"I can help accompany him for the night." Arago-san suddenly volunteered.
Mahiru looked at Arago-san with wide eyes. Not even the aunties that live next door would be able to make time to take care of him. And Arago-san was willing to do it even if they've only met that day?
"A-are you sure? I wouldn't want to trouble you anymore." His mom was concerned.
"Yeah, I'm sure. As long as you can make it for Mahiru's birthday tomorrow, right?"
That day, Mahiru saw his mom show the happiest smile he had ever seen.
"You are a saint, Arago-san."
That made Arago-san's entire face go red. "G-geez, you don't have to go that far. I'm sure anyone would've done the same," he stuttered out.
Mahiru's mom chuckled. "Oh, how modest. I'm sure your parents are proud of you."
That made Arago-san look a little sad suddenly, and he started rubbing his ear again. "Yeah, I'm sure they are...." He let out a small cough. "Anyways, don't worry about it."
"I just wanted to help. That's all."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mahiru was buying supplies at a local supermarket alongside Koyuki, Ryuusei and Sakuya for their school festival. They were waiting for their turn to pay as Sakuya was sharing another of his silly ghost stories (something about Hanako-san and how she lived at their school) and asking them how much of what he said was a lie. Just as Mahiru was about to smack Sakuya on the head,
"Sorry ma'am, but I'm afraid there's not enough in your card."
That caught Mahiru's attention and he turned to the front. The woman had a few groceries on the counter. To the side, her daughter seemed to be taking a set of colour pencils off the counter.
"It's ok Mama. I can put these back. We don't have to buy them."
Subconsciously, Mahiru stepped forward. "Wait, I can help pay for those."
The woman immediately interjected, "O-oh no, it's fine. You don't have to do that."
"I don't mind. I'm not buying much for myself. I can pay for the colour pencils."
Mahiru ignored the weird looks his friends were giving him as he paid for their supplies and the colour pencils. They bought quite a lot to prepare for the festival, but he was going to claim whatever amount of money he spent on the supplies from the class budget so it wasn't like he was lying.
After that, he helped the woman and her daughter to load the groceries into their car. "Oh, thank you. You really are an angel."
The comment made him blush, and he started rubbing his ear. "Don't worry about it. I just wanted to help. That's all."
As he and his friends walked back to Koyuki's house to organise their supplies, Sakuya suddenly piped up, "Hey Mahiru, why do you rub your ear at times?"
"Huh, seriously Sakuya? He's been doing that for years now!" Ryuusei shot Sakuya an incredulous look.
"I-I know that! It's just that I never thought to ask him why until now!"
"That is true, we've been seeing Mahiru doing it for years now, but I don't think we ever questioned it," Koyuki added.
All three of them stopped walking and looked at Mahiru hoping to get an answer. He just sighed and said, "It's not some grand story or anything. I just accidentally picked it up from one of my neighbours. You guys know him."
"Oh, you mean the gaijin from England?" Ryuusei asked as the four of them continued walking.
"Who...?"
"Don't you remember him Sakuya? He accompanied Mahiru while we were planning his birthday surprise."
"Uuummm... oh! Yeah, that's right Koyuki. Shit, I'm sorry Mahiru, for not being there for you when you were alone."
Mahiru sighed. "It's fine Sakuya. I know you guys were just trying to make my birthday more fun that year."
"Anyways, Arago-san helped to take care of me whenever Mom or Uncle Tooru was too busy for about a month before he had to go back to England to deal with something. Must've picked it up from him during that time."
Everyone hummed in agreement before Sakuya started speaking. "Y'know Mahiru. You could've met an angel."
"....Is this another one of your jokes, Sakuya?"
"Wait, wait, hear me out first! They say that each child is blessed with two guardian angels to guide them through life. When the child is going through hardship, one of them would appear to the child in a form that is most welcoming. The angel would help to care for the child until they believe the child is in a good situation and then leave to return to their post."
Everyone went silent at Sakuya's words. Mahiru thought about how Arago-san went beyond the kindness one would normally show a stranger. Maybe angel was a bet-
"Now who wants to guess how much of what I said was a lie?"
"Ow! Hey! Mahiru! You didn't need to hit me that hard!"

So the servamp role swap au, Ay?
thanks @bluelovestoship for letting me spit ball this nonsense to you, love you 💙
Exhausted 20 something older brother of 8 siblings Ash and feral as all fuck servamp of obsession Shiro/mahi
Shiro looks mid twenties, has serious gifted kid burnout. Picture a 20s radio host mixed with a prohibition bootlegger and that’s basically his aesthetic. Shiro keeps his spear in the form of an umbrella, for that sexy gentleman vibe.
It’s also another dragon mahi, bc I literally have no chill
Shiro wears nothing but suits and Ash has never worn anything over 30$
Ash works like 2 jobs and is in college. Give him a break. Lives alone in a flat, visits his siblings often.
the others vamp siblings are between 2 and 20.
I will take my twin headcanon to the grave (Fight me on this) so Ash and Tsubaki are twins. They have a good relationship, Tsu mainly takes care of the younger siblings.
Tsubaki x Sakuya bc it’s my keyboard and I can do whatever I want.
Servamp of lies Sakuya
Chaos servamps and their perpetually exhausted and concerned eves vs the C3
Subclass background boyfriends! Ryusei and koyuki being so done with Shiro’s obvious pining for his eve
That’s all I have right now. With update you if I have more brain worms.

Oh damn everyone living in the same house would be chaos, but hey Sakuya is happy he gets to live with Mahiru, and Licht gets to see Mr. Fox and Mr. Cat more
Sakuya is SOOOOOOOOOOO happy he gets to live in the same house as Mahiru! He's not so happy that everyone else is there. Team M has made it an infuriating habit to bother the both of them when in common areas together. Sakuya wants to strangle his stupid family.
Licht is a menace. The Servamps all try to avoid being in their animal forms at first but Licht starts kicking them and demanding the animals so they have no choice sometimes.
Ildio is Mahiru's worst nightmare because he keeps eating more than Mahiru would make and forces him to completely readjust his grocery budget and fucks up all his pricing planning sheets and shit. After Mahiru adjusts to his appetite, its a nightmare because Ildio insists on trying to cook everything he sees that he thinks would taste good and makes a mess Mahiru will have to clean up the majority of. Niccolo helps expand Mahiru's budget as apology.
Kuro now has to get the complete Sibling Experience as an older brother and his siblings keep coming into his room so often to mess with him that they had to call C3 in to install locks on all the bedroom doors. It barely helps.
They have a music room! It has a piano for Licht and a lot of other instruments that some of the servamps know how to play + a violin for Mikuni. Sakuya sometimes scopes the place out to make sure its empty to practice his guitar because it sounds better in this room than his bedroom.
They do karaoke sometimes. Enough said, really.
Sometimes Tooru visits. He visits far more often than he would to his apartment because C3 needs someone to go check up on them and Tooru is least likely to get into a fight with anyone there. It makes Mahiru happy to see him more and he even stays the whole day sometimes and has dinner with them. Sakuya is a bit more nervous around him bc of the whole C3 and "I memory fucked your nephew in order to shimmy a spot in his life and you know and I know you know" thing.
That being said, Tooru has gotten into a fight with one of them before bc it was a particularly shitty day for Hyde and he thought he could pull it off. He could not. He got his ass handed to him and now he has a crush on Mahiru's uncle.
They end up living there for a very long time, all going about their individual lives but coming back to live together now that things were mended. So long, in fact, that the teenagers are no longer teenagers and everyone got to watch as Mahiru and Tetsu grow up to be hunks. Misono ages into an adult beautifully, of course, but he barely grows any taller. He's extremely mad about it.
Now, a tibit of the drama that i love especially:
Lily and Belkia would constantly, and I mean constantly, be at each other's throats. They are throwing shade at each other like nothing else and bitching and insulting each others fashion sense and choice of shades of pink. Everyone there is very lucky they don't have to share a bathroom.
Once, Tsubaki hid one of Jeje's wip ship-in-a-bottle and got shot when Jeje found it and found out he hid it.
Sometimes Ryuusei and Koyuki come over to visit Mahiru and everyone they dont know gets insulted hardcore at first before they get familiar. Freya really likes Koyuki bc he's interested in plants and loves her apples. Ryuusei once asked to work out with Ildio and Tetsu and... well... Never again. Lawless and Tsubaki are the ones that get subjected to Koyuki's rare verbal smackdowns and they sulk for like a week because of all the things said. They behave a little more around him. Sakuya has both of these incidents on record.
Kuro and Sakuya warm up to each other enough that Sakuya gets to bother Kuro without concequence (Sakuya and Kuro are like cats in a very similar way so they chill together mostly) and Kuro's siblings think its so unfair the first time they catch them cuddled up together playing their video games. Mahiru loves it.
Tsubaki and Team M play so many fucking pranks its insane. They prank Mahiru at a distance after the one time they scared him and Mahiru punched Tsubaki square in his face and broke his nose.
Higan hit on Tooru once and almost got jumped by Mahiru.
Speaking of Higan, he and Hyde are feuding, and he avoids Lily when he can.
Sometimes Tsurugi visits for Mahiru and causes some chaos.
And sometimes he drags Touma with him and many fights have to be stopped each time he sets foot the front door. This is why they send Tooru.
Mikado visited once but got so intimidated by all of the vampires that he swore he'd never visit again. Tries to get Misono back in Alicein Manor but it doesn't work and he sulks about it. Boohoo bitch.
Thats all I got for now.

Shorter than usual this time, but that's because there's a special illustration at the end ;3 Yes it's supposed to be that messy lol
Something Mahiru had noticed over the years was that Kuro… Was actually pretty talented. Lazy as his Servamp seemed to be, he had skills up his sleeves that constantly surprised those around them, including the other Servamps. Usually, though, those were the more modern things, the things Kuro had only gotten the time and energy to learn because he was in such a better place now (and it always made Mahiru’s heart swell with pride when he remembered that little fact).
Still… It truly was incredible. Not just for Kuro, either. For all of them, each Servamp seemed to have an almost inexhaustible list of professions they could go into, specialties they latched onto and continued to develop even in the present day. But, well… Of course he was the most interested in what his partner could do, right? Right!
His favorite, though, was unquestionably the fact Kuro was just… A good artist.
Finding it out was a complete accident, really. A study date at the library between himself and his friends, prepping for yearly final exams (had it already been almost three years since he’d met Sakuya and two since he picked up Kuro?) and trying not to crack under the stress, which meant that while the four of them huddled over their books and passed notes and guides back and forth, Kuro remained all by his lonesome at the end of their table. A pair of headphones and a handheld gaming system kept him occupied, something Mahiru was grateful for, but at some point, Kuro’s interest had started to wane, and, well. They had so many supplies strewn about, a notebook and a pencil weren’t going to be missed. He certainly hadn’t noticed Kuro snagging them to amuse himself, and if he had, well, he simply would have assumed it was to write.
Writing was something he had learned Kuro could do last year. Not because his Servamp had done it in front of him, oh, of course not. He learned because the British Museum decided it was the perfect time to digitize some of the historical records of a certain mysterious family that just so happened to be composed of seven siblings, and a certain werewolf had given them a call to warn them that certain journals were now publicly available, and wow he had never seen the blood drain as fast from Kuro’s face as he did the day his partner had been made aware that the fiction he had written in the past as a means to pass the time had not, in fact, been lost to the ages, but was now up for anyone and everyone to read in all its glory.
Suffice to say, Kuro had not been happy.
Mahiru had also not been happy, but only because he couldn’t read a damn word, what with it being written in not just English, but old English. Still, what Youtarou had kindly translated for him had been, well… Beautiful. Even if Kuro was embarrassed by his old hobby, there was no denying that his writing was good. It made him wonder what else was in those journals, not that he went prying. He got the distinct feeling there were lots of things written there that he didn’t want to know about… After all, Lawless’s past words were immortalized, too. Trying to make sense of that would make his brain leak out of his ears, he was sure of it.
Just like trying to make sense of the math material was doing to Ryuusei, although Sakuya was making a valiant, if not altogether unsuccessful effort, to prevent such brain leakage.
“What’s the equivalent of becoming a stripper for dudes…?”
“You’re still a stripper. The decision comes with whether you wanna strip for girls or not. The problem is, if you strip for girls, their boyfriends might try to beat you up.”
“I can take ‘em.”
“In that tiny little thong? No you cannot.”
“Guys…! We need to focus!”
“Oi,” Mahiru suddenly spoke up, catching the attention of all three. Koyuki, bless his heart, looked grateful for the distraction. Ryuusei just looked like he was on the brink of killing himself. Or Sakuya. Whichever was easiest, probably. “Why don’t we break for lunch?”
“God, please,” Ryuusei groaned, flopping dramatically across his workbook. A few of Koyuki’s colorful gel pens went rolling across the table with the disturbance, much to their owner’s annoyance. “Spare me from this torture…”
“If you had studied more this wouldn’t be a problem.” Sakuya’s scolding only earned another series of whines, Ryuusei bemoaning his preemptively ruined winter break.
“He’s right, you know…” Koyuki’s mumble went unheeded, which seemed to suit him just fine, since his attention was soon grabbed by where his school supplies had ended up. Namely, coming to a harmless stop against the edge of the notebook Kuro had claimed for himself. A notebook which had an entire page covered with a hazy sketch Mahiru couldn’t quite make out from his position across from the other. “Guys, look.”
With the new and sudden scrutiny being paid to him by four people, Kuro summarily shrunk. “... What.” To most people he would have sounded irritated, but Mahiru knew he was only self conscious. He couldn’t really blame him. Kuro still felt awkward tagging along as a person at the best of times, but this had been the vampire’s idea to begin with, so until he was given some kind of signal that Kuro was all tapped out on social interaction and needed a reprieve, dealing with his rowdy friends was still on the table.
“Did you draw that?” Sakuya asked dumbly, voicing the question they all had the answer to but nonetheless wanted to ask. A blink, the other looking down at the paper, head tilting as if Kuro wasn’t entirely sure how the lines on the pages had gotten there. His lips pressed together, brow furrowing as Kuro worked his jaw, no doubt trying to come up with some snappy comeback. Briefly Mahiru thought about how sarcasm and teasing were part of Kuro’s love language, and how unappreciative Sakuya could be when those came from people he didn’t already like. He needed to work on that with them…
Ultimately, Kuro gave up on being witty, and instead opted for being petulant. “No.”
“Liar?!”
“Don’t ask dumb questions if you don’t want dumb answers… Can’t deal…”
“Okay listen here ya damn cat…” Sakuya stepped forward and Kuro hunkered down, covering the pages and preventing any of them from getting a better look. An offended noise. “I’m not going to try and take it?”
“Shhh, you’re being too loud… Um… Excuse me…” Koyuki flashed Kuro a hesitant smile before plucking up his wayward pen, setting about cleaning up their space while trying not to be too obvious about how interested he was in the Servamp’s work. Mahiru only shook his head and followed suit, but not before giving Kuro a pat, and Sakuya a pointed poke in the side that made him jerk.
“No fighting.”
“I-I wasn’t!”
“No. Fighting,” he repeated, and, satisfied with the sulky nod he received, allowed Kuro to withdraw into himself while they all packed up. “Where do you guys wanna eat, anyhow?”
Gratitude filtered back to him through their link, and Mahiru smiled. Even if it was selfish, he kind of enjoyed knowing that he was the only one who Kuro truly felt… At ease around. Still. He couldn’t help but let more of his curiosity about what the other had been doing get back to him than he should have, because in the next moment, their link closed off, shut up like floodgates while Kuro possessively dragged the notebook closer to himself.
“Sorry,” he murmured, shouldering his bag, “You don’t have to show me.”
“... Later,” Kuro promised, and that was enough to make him happy.
***
Mahiru never did get that notebook or pencil back. Which was fine by him because, in their place, he got treated to little doodles and comics, silly drawings left for him to find around the apartment, and Kuro accompanying him more often on outings as a human being. He supposed it was because it allowed the vampire to redirect his nervous energy into action, rather than just mindlessly slapping buttons, and that was good enough reason to encourage Kuro to take up a hobby he’d long put to rest once more.
(A selfish part of him reveled in being the only one of the Eves to know about it, and the only person, period, Kuro willingly showed what he had done to)
A simple notebook, and a simple pencil, could do so much. Including show him exactly how he appeared through his Servamp’s eyes.

Part 1 Mahiru sat at his desk, trying to diligently take notes but finding his focus kept slipping. He tapped his pencil against his notebook before staring at the back of Ryuusei’s head.
“How do you do it?” Mahiru had asked Jun after his first day at school since he left. “Go back.” Jun hesitated, then dropped his gaze to the table. “You can’t. Or,” he smiled a bit sheepishly (though didn’t look back up), “not that I’ve found.” “Then….” Mahiru tried to piece together his words, making them simple and easy, but they vanished from his tongue. “How am I supposed to?” Jun’s brief smile had disappeared and his eyes were still on the table. “I’m sorry.”
The lunch bell rang and Mahiru jumped, his knees hitting the underside of his desk. The door was only a few feet away and two people were within arm’s length. “Jeez, man, are you okay?” Ryuusei had turned in his chair, looking at Mahiru. “Yeah, I’m fine!” Mahiru painted his face into an apologetic expression and chuckled nervously. “I just zoned out for a second.” His breath stuttered and he held it, counting to 10 before weakly exhaling. He picked up his books and supplies, nearly dropping his pencil from his hands shaking. He could feel Ryuusei still staring, making his skin prickle.
Tsurugi’s legs swung back in forth as he sat, perched on Mahiru’s balcony. “That’s called hypervigilance, least according to the docs!” He shoved the bun Mahiru had given him into his mouth, muffling his next words. “Course, putting it in a file doesn’t really mean anything at the end of the day.” “Does it ever stop?” Tsurugi shrugged, then leaned back, hanging off the balcony with his legs hooked around the railing. “Dunno. Nobody ever tried to fix it with me. It’s a good thing, being aware like that, when you’re hunting things.” Mahiru folded his arms and set his head on them, looking at the view. After a few seconds, he spoke up again. “What did you want for dinner?”
His fingers ran over the soft fabric of his wristband as he looked through store windows with Koyuki. “Do you see anything?” Koyuki shook his head. “Maybe somewhere else.” Mahiru checked their reflections in the glass before nodding. “Maybe there’s a fabric store around here. I could try and make a new tie or coat.” Nothing but them and the few passersby on the sidewalk. He still looked around as they walked further down the sidewalk, idly tugging on Sakuya’s gift, and scanned every dim alley they passed.
Kuro meowed as he laid on Mahiru’s pillow, paws up. “You can always become a shut-in.” Mahiru shook his head emphatically. “That doesn’t fix anything.” “Yeah, but,” he yawned, stretching out and rolling over, “does going out help either?” “I think so.” Mahiru thought it over. “A little bit. It’s just…” Kuro waited patiently for the rest of his thoughts, his tail swishing against the pillowcase. “It feels like the world changed, except it hasn’t.” Mahiru pulled the needle through a tear in one of his shirts. “Things should be simple again.” Kuro hummed, looking at his Eve. He opened his mouth, and then closed it. “It’s not your fault, so don’t try and apologize. I would still have picked you up.” He looped the thread over itself, knotting it, and snipped it with a pair of scissors. “If the world didn’t change, then, simply, I must have.” He smoothed the shirt out over his lap, the stitches almost invisible to the naked eye.
Mahiru’s eyes snapped open. He stared at the dark ceiling of his bedroom, waiting for his vision to adjust as he gasped for breath after breath. “Mahiru?” Kuro’s sleepy voice came from nearby. He steadied his breathing. “I’m okay.” “Mmm…” Tiny paws touched his shoulder and Mahiru felt Kuro curl against the crook of his neck. “It’s alright if you wake me up. Sometimes.” The words caught in Mahiru’s throat for a second and he swallowed, blinking rapidly. “Thanks, Kuro.” He closed his eyes, and after an eternity, the sound of his servamp’s dozing lulled him to sleep.
Maybe the morning would be easier; the sun would remind him that it was over now. All he had to worry about was his project and buying the game Kuro wanted. But he knew when he woke up, the heavy feeling in his bones would still be there and his eyes would chase shadows. He would trudge to school and sit in class, feeling like a misplaced brushstroke on an otherwise flawless painting. Something had changed about Mahiru.

I just…. I just love these boys so much. Happy birthday, Ryuusei!
Ryuusei is generally an amicable person. Sure, he gets irritated and, sure, he gets bitingly sarcastic. But he likes to think he’s an amicable person with simple needs. One of which is not being bombarded by balloons whenever he walks out the door. But that is exactly what happened, he grouses as he pushes them away to see Koyuki. Koyuki, still giving him a smile that weakens his knees, pushes the package into his hands and watches as he tries to handle them all. It’s a basket, Ryuusei notices sourly. A basket with at least four balloons tied to the handle, candy spilling over the sides, and a party popper held in between two chocolate bars. Koyuki plucks the party popper out of the basket and blows it in his face.
Ryuusei transfers the basket to one hand and wipes the confetti away from his face. “Really,” he says flatly. Koyuki merely links his arm with him and starts down the sidewalk, humming all the while.
“Yes. We do this every year, Ryuusei, you’d think you learn.”
“Yeah, well, I shouldn’t have to expect a loud noise at seven in the morning,” Ryuusei replies grouchily. He doesn’t actually mind his birthday - he got cinnamon rolls for breakfast instead of his usual eggs which was nice - but he hates this tradition. Mahiru started it when they were ten as a prank and Koyuki had carried it on. He’s stuck with it, unfortunately, and has been for five years now.
Koyuki laughs, the sound of it like bells. “You say that every year.”
“Because it’s true every year,” Ryuusei shoots back without missing a beat, and Koyuki rolls his eyes. The morning crowd mills around them in the train station - his house was a mere two minute walk from it while Koyuki’s was at least a ten minute walk - and nobody bats an eye at the two of them. They’re used to this because every year on the twenty-third Ryuusei showed up with Koyuki on his elbow and a basket on his other arm.
God, that makes it sound like they’re dating. Which they aren’t, no matter how much Ryuusei wishes otherwise.
“So you say,” Koyuki counters. He gets their tickets and hands Ryuusei’s his, as he does every other day. “But I think you like it.”
“I do not,” Ryuusei objects loftily, and Koyuki gives a smile that’s mild as milk. “I don’t!”
“Of course you don’t,” Koyuki replies, not unkindly. “That’s why you keep the balloons until they deflate and keep all the candy for yourself.“
Ryuusei glowers at him. “It’s candy, what do you want from me? To not eat it?”
“Of course not.” Koyuki pats his arm. “That’s not what I’m saying at all.”
That is exactly what he’s saying, Ryuusei knows, and when he sends a look towards him, he has this angelic appearance on his face that only Koyuki can pull off. “Uh-huh,” he says dubiously, and Koyuki wrinkles his nose at him for doubting him.
“I’m hurt,” he complains, pouting a little. Ryuusei bops him on the head and Koyuki leans down obligingly to let him do it. Ryuusei hates being so short; he’s shorter than literally everyone else. Sakuya teases that his temper is because he’s so much closer to hell, to which Ryuusei knees him in the stomach. Damn tall bastard.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” Ryuusei teases, thumping the basket on his foot. Koyuki winces and hisses through his teeth, sending him an evil look. Ryuusei smiles sweetly as the ding comes from overhead, the train jerking to a stop in front of them. Ryuusei gets on without a word, putting in his earbuds as he takes a seat; Koyuki follows him sedately, sitting down beside him and letting Ryuusei thump his head down on his shoulder.
The train ride goes like that the whole time, Ryuusei occasionally adjusting the volume of his earbuds when it gets to a particularly loud song and Koyuki messing with Ryuusei’s hair once in a while. It’s peaceful, and Ryuusei nearly falls asleep so Koyuki has to nudge him once in a while to get him to stay awake.
“I’m not a child,” Ryuusei tells him when they leave the train. Koyuki gives him that little, condescending smile that he only gives his friends. It’s like he knows more than he does. Not for the first time, Ryuusei wonders if Koyuki has secrets - big ones - that he should know about because he gives that look quite a bit.
“I know you’re not,” Koyuki says, and they bicker the entire way to the school.
Ryuusei is staring warily at the door to the classroom when Mahiru pops up behind him. Out of literally nowhere.
“Ryuusei,” he says, then waits while Ryuusei jumps then calms down. “Ryuusei, what are you doing.”
Ryuusei doesn’t take his eyes off the door. “Sakuya,” he says gravely. “Sakuya knows today is my birthday and you know how he is. I’m not sure if I want to go in there.”
Mahiru laughs a little - it’s more of a cackle, and Ryuusei realizes, with slowly mounting terror, that Sakuya is beginning to rub off on him.
“It won’t be that bad,” he says teasingly. Ryuusei stays unconvinced and stays standing, not moving. Mahiru sighs, drops his bag, and literally drags him, what the hell, into the classroom. And, as it turns out, Ryuusei had reason to fear going inside because Sakuya had decorated the entire room with birthday stickers, the words happy birthday, Ryuusei! in a blistering orange , and in the middle of it all is Sakuya, grinning widely with his hands on his hips. He’s clearly proud of himself, and the banner that says happy birthday almost touches his head. The room is so eye searing that Ryuusei has to cover his eyes before he goes blind.
Mahiru merely takes a look around and throws Sakuya an amused glance. “You went all out,” he says. “Farther than what you told me you would.”
Sakuya laughs, entirely gleeful. Ryuusei can feel a headache from the orange. “I can’t stay predictable, Mahiru!”
“I predicted this,” Ryuusei says, speaking up. “I so fucking predicted this.”
“He did,” Mahiru agrees solemnly. “He so did.”
Sakuya droops, like a dying flower, and Ryuusei refuses to feel guilty. He refuses. Sakuya deserves that for nearly making him blind.
“Mahiru!” Sakuya wails, crocodile tears streaming down his cheeks as he turns to their friend, and Mahiru stands stoically as he clutches his shoulders. “Mahiru, I’m predictable.”
“You are,” Mahiru agrees woodenly as he pats Sakuya on the back.  “You so are.”
Sakuya collapses to the ground and Mahiru kneels beside him. “Same.”
“Shut it.”
“Never.”
“You both are ridiculous,” Ryuusei interrupts, and Koyuki wraps an arm around his shoulders. “Koyuki, tell them that.”
“You’re both being silly,” Koyuki says, not unkindly, and Mahiru and Sakuya give him blank stares. “But happy birthday, Ryuu-chan.”
“Yeah, happy birthday!” Mahiru choruses, sending him a grin that’s nearly as blinding at the orange. Ryuusei gives them a nod, smiling a bit himself, and he thinks that this birthday will not be so bad when -
“Happy birthday to the tiniest person in the class!”
(Sakuya gets an aching gut for the rest of the day for that comment.)

It's already July 23rd in Japan, and to celebrate Ryuusei's birthday, the official Servamp Account posted this image along with a caption
Tumblr media
"Today 7/23 is the birthday of Ryuusei! He's Mahiru's friend since Elementary school, and he can have a rough personality. He, Koyuki, Mahiru and Sakuya were always hanging together. His favorite food is Yakisoba Bread."
Congratulations !"
Happy birthday, Ryuusei-kun!

hiiii ive said before that i miss the concept of kinkmeme where you can write down a prompt and several people can fill in on that prompt but i don't feel like making dreamwidth for such a small fandom so let's do it on tumblr, servamp fandom
send me a prompt of a story you'd like to read and i'll post it on my blog so other people can see it. you can add bonus points for specific things you want to see in the fic
here's an example of a kinkmeme prompt format:
([put ship name here or tag it as gen]) [put prompt here] ([put possible tw or kink here]) +put bonus point here -put what you don't want to see here ex. (Kuro/Mahiru) Mahiru introduces Kuro to Ryuusei and Koyuki +bonus point if they don't know about vampires yet -no sakuya wank please ex2. (Touma/Tooru) Touma drags Tooru to a love hotel on the day he promises his nephew to watch his play for the school festival (dubcon) +pre-canon please, preferably when Mahiru is still in grade school +i want to see Tooru's guilt for breaking his promise :3
anyway ask is open
