🌟 Happy March 8th! 🌟 On this day in 1983, astronaut Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly into space. Talk about reaching for the stars, literally! 🚀 Let's celebrate this cosmic achievement by channeling our inner space explorer and shooting for the moon (figuratively, of course)! Remember, the sky's not the limit when there are footprints on the moon! #SpacePioneer #SallyRide #FunnyFriday #March8 #Inspiration #WomenInHistory #ReachForTheStars #GirlPower 💫👩‍🚀

There are days where I think that Kathy Sullivan and Sally Ride once kissed each other. I know. I'm crazy for thinking that...

Uomini! TRANSLATION When Sally Ride became the first American to go into space in 1983, apparently NASA scientists who weighed everything with a scale because you can't put an extra gram into space, gave Sally 100 tampons for her menstruation, Sally had to stay six days in space, and evidently these scientists had no sisters, had no mothers, had no idea how many tampons a woman needed for a menstrual cycle, didn't even know if poor Sally would have her period during those six days, they thought it better to abound than to run out of tampons, because you never know. Seriously, she was actually offered 100 tampons, they asked her, is this the right number? And she said No. The NASA scientists, apparently, also prepared a makeup kit to give to Sally Ride to take into space, and Sally Ride, I don't know if she laughed and said, no, thank you, honestly about the makeup in space I don't need it. Sally Ride was the first American and the third woman, and guess who were the other first two women who went to space? Two Russian cosmonauts Valentina Tereškova in 1963, the first woman to go into space, and the second woman, also a Russian, Svetlana Savitskaïa in 1982. Then evidently the Americans, feeling the breathing down their necks, said we must hurry up and send a woman into space, because otherwise the Russians keep screwing us all the records. For the record, the first Italian in space, it will not surprise anyone to know that it is our Samantha Cristoforetti, who went into space in 2009. This story of Sally Ride's tampons happened actually in 1983, but it returned to the headlines in 2020, when the comedian and musician Marcia Belsky wrote a song entitled 100 Tampons in which she retells in a very funny, in a hilarious way, what happened when Sally was preparing to go into orbit for NASA. Eh 2022, maybe some of you remember it, sorry 2020 the year of the pandemic, and in fact the song was very successful, also because in 2020 we were all locked up at home watching videos on YouTube. Anyway I will put the link of the song, as well as other information about Sally Ride and the Russian cosmonauts in the program notes. Yes, it really made me laugh not only at the song, but also thinking about Sally being sent into space with 100 tampons and makeup kit. Men!

On this day, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for standing for equality and justice.
We know him as a leader and a civil rights activist, but did you know he was a fellow #blerd? In this post, @NPR journalist Michelle Martin interviews Nichelle Nichols to discuss his impact on her career in this January 17th, 2011 episode of "Tell Me More". King convinced  Nichelle Nichols to continue with Star Trek as Nichols considered quitting after the first season. SOURCE: NPR Tell Me More.
Nichols' role of Uhuara would inspire the careers of Dr. Mae Jemison, Sally Ride, and Dr. Sian Proctor!

It always ends the same. With him walking away. And she knows she’ll wake up, go to work and he won’t be there. Knows that’s what he’d done. Knows there’s no biscuits and questions waiting for her. But he’s supposed to be there, in 3 years worth of memories. But even in her dreams, before he’s supposed to be gone, he is leaving.

Happy #womenshistorymonth! I submitted this piece to Pitch Black Printing Co.'s Nasty Women art show! Check out their Instagram story to see all of the art! "When she blasted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, she became the first American woman—and, at 32, the youngest American—in space. Sally's historic flight made her a symbol of the ability of women to break barriers and a hero to generations of adventurous young girls." - sallyridescience.ucsd.edu

@nytimes has a feature article about Anna May Wong, the first Asian American on U.S. currency, up today. People have been feverishly tagging & DM’ing this account and for good reason - it’s kinda of a big deal! Wish the article wasn’t behind a paywall, but still cool nonetheless. I try not to get upset over the comments area where some people question “Why her? She doesn’t deserve it!” or who have never heard of her or have a “who cares?” mentality. Rather I would think of what AMW would do or think. She would rather think it amusing, make a witty remark about it, and find a way to advocate for others - especially BIPOC. Because that’s who she was.
