Sanders Sides Musical Madness (A Songfic Series) Part 2: Lover 🩵💔 & 💚💛

Content Warnings- Patton angst, mention of intrusive thoughts (not in detail)

A/N: I put the song lyrics in this oneshot as well, so the lyrics are in parentheses. There’s also brackets around what’s supposed to be a text message on Patton’s phone towards the end of the oneshot. Also, this was inspired by the several Gacha Life/Club music videos that exist for this song on YouTube. The AO3 link and link to the previous and next part will be at the end of this oneshot.

Patton looked at his reflection in his vanity mirror and smiled at himself. His blonde hair was brushed nicely and he was wearing his favorite sweater and jeans. Today was the day he’d confess his feelings to Remus. Patton never thought he’d fall for one of his childhood friends, but here he was. He only realized his feelings a few weeks ago, so he hasn’t told any of his other friends about it yet. Patton wanted to process his feelings on his own first and avoid drawing attention to them, in case Remus ended up rejecting him if he eventually confessed.

“You’ve got this, Pat. And if he rejects you, hopefully he’ll still want to be your friend.” Patton says to try and comfort himself. He quickly grabs his backpack and exits his room. He waves goodbye to his parents before leaving the house and walking towards his high school.

Patton arrives at school and walks over to his friend group’s usual meeting spot, which is by the big tree in front of the school. He sees Remus and Roman already there, but he also notices someone new. Remus is the first to notice Patton approaching and smiles widely, waving at Patton to call him over.

Patton finally is close enough to speak to the twins and whoever this new person is. The stranger has dark brown hair than stops a few inches above their shoulders. They also have a birthmark on the left side of their face as well as heterochromia.

Remus motions to the new person and speaks to Patton, “Pat! This is Janus, he’s new to this school and Roman was asked by the principal to show him to his classes.” Remus then smiles brightly at Janus, and Patton can’t help but pay attention to the way his crush looks at Janus. Remus never looked at him like that before. Remus never looked at any of his friends like that. Soon Virgil and Logan arrived and the friend group plus Janus talked to each other for a bit before heading inside for their homerooms.

Throughout the school day, Patton kept thinking about Remus and Janus. Maybe he shouldn’t confess today after all….

Patton didn’t end up confessing that day, and Janus ended up joining the friend group. Everyone seemed to like Janus. Roman now had someone to speak about theater with. Logan had someone to talk about ethics and philosophy with. Virgil had someone besides Remus to watch horror movies with. And Remus finally had someone other than Logan who was comfortable hearing about his darker thoughts.

Patton was happy for Remus. His crush now had Janus to help him deal with his intrusive thoughts. Logan was there to listen to Remus when he needed to discuss his thoughts, but Patton could tell that Logan got a bit worn out from being the only one there to help.

Still, Patton couldn’t help but wish he was the one there to comfort Remus. But the intrusive thoughts were too much for Patton to listen to. He’d never be able to compete with Janus in that regard. So all Patton could do was watch as Remus started spending more and more time with Janus. Patton wasn’t going to let his jealousy cause him to try and separate Remus and Janus. His crush needed Janus’s support, and clearly appreciated Janus’ company.

A month after Janus joined the friend group, Remus and Roman invited everyone over for a sleepover. Patton was one of the last people to arrive. When he got there, he saw Janus talking with the twins’ mother. They were discussing musicals, and she seemed to really enjoy the conversation. Patton had spoken with the twins’ mother many times before. But it took a while for her to warm up to him when she first met him. Meanwhile, this is the first time Janus is meeting her and they’re already getting along really well.

The sleepover activities included watching movies, playing video games, and just chatting. During the movies, Patton noticed how close Remus and Janus got to each other. Janus was resting his head on Remus’ shoulder and Remus wrapped his arm around Janus’ shoulder. Patton’s heart ached at the sight since Remus used to let him rest his head on his shoulder during movie nights.

That night, Patton couldn’t fall asleep. He kept thinking about how his crush clearly liked Janus. This thought hurt, but Patton wanted to be happy for Remus. Remus was his friend after all. And he probably wouldn’t be the perfect lover for Remus anyway…

Remus liked to talk about Janus a lot now whenever Patton hung out with him. Remus would talk about how he and Janus have so much in common. They both have similar music tastes and like the same types of horror movies. And Janus is comfortable letting him vent about his intrusive thoughts when they become too much to handle alone.

Was that all it took to win Remus’ heart? Just having enough common interests and being able to listen to him vent? Patton wished he could meet these standards if that was the case. But he can’t change himself that much.

Patton wishes his crush would go away, so he’d stop feeling heartbroken every time he saw Janus and Remus spending time together. But maybe if Patton kept waiting, Remus might end up falling for him still. After all, Remus and Janus aren’t dating. And Remus hasn’t even confirmed that he has a crush on Janus. So maybe this jealousy and worry is all for nothing….

A few days before the last day of school, Remus pulled Patton and Roman aside on their way to the cafeteria for lunch.

“Hey Pat, Ro, there’s something important I have to tell you two…” Remus says, and fidgets with the bottom of his shirt.

“What is it Re? Should I be worried? I don’t see you acting this serious often ....” Roman asks, his voice sounding both curious and concerned.

Remus takes a deep breath before replying, “Well since you two are my best friends I just wanted to tell you that I have a crush on Janus. And I want to confess today, so that way if it goes badly I won’t have to see him for a while since the last day of school is soon. And I wanted to ask you both for advice on how to confess.”

Roman smiles brightly and says, “It’s about time you act on your feelings! I noticed your crush a long time ago and I was starting to think I’d have to knock some sense into you to get you to confess.”

Patton is speechless. His fear came true. Remus has feelings for Janus and is going to confess today. And there’s nothing else he can do to try and win Remus over. So Patton fakes a smile and replies, “I’m so happy for you Remus! And I’d love to offer you some advice.”

Patton and Roman then help Remus plan out his confession.

As Remus takes Janus by the hand at the end of the school day to go and confess, Patton watches with teary eyes. He knows Janus will say yes and Remus will get the happy ending he deserves.

Later that night, Patton sees a notification from the group chat on his phone. It’s from Remus.

[Remus 💚🐙: Guess what everyone! Janus and I are dating now :D]

Patton immediately shuts off his phone and starts to cry. He will never be what Remus wants in a partner. He’ll always just be a friend.

Maybe he’ll never be the perfect lover for anyone….
