#sandman comic spoilers
so the netflix show has already shown us two of dream's other aspects, kai'ckul and the king of cats, but one of my favourite things about the endless in the comics is that they have a different incarnation for every single species and culture that has ever experienced them, in this case, if your people dream, you have a personalised Dream
and the comics are also part of the dcu, which means there are a LOT of other species out there to dream
many of these screenshots were taken from one issue which involves a meeting in dream's head between all of his different incarnations, some are just from other places in the comic, but my personal favourites include:
l'zoril, dream god of the green martians

whatever is going on here with the tentacle robot, the teen titans looking motherfucker, the dragon, and the guy in the witch hat (all equally dream of the endless)

Sometimes I think that’s a little funny how the sandman fandom fixated into the dreamling ship when in canon they interract so little and seem to be good aquintances at best, but then I remember that the actual, canonical ending of their storyline in the comics is that after Dream’s death, Hob has a dream where he is reunited with the ghost of Dream and they walk off into the sunset together, with and this is a quote from Hob himself: “there’s only one way to end a story, they lived happily ever after.”
Like, Hello!!?? The fuck was that supposed to be??

Hob Gadling - A Queer Romantic?
I have been listening to The World's End chapters of The Sandman on Audible lately and just finished Hob's Leviathan. I didn't pay this story much attention when I first read the comic, as I tended to read through the stories quickly and put more focus into the stories where Dream had a larger role. But one of the reasons I like listening to the Audible book is because it allows me to absorb each story more thoroughly and take my time thinking about each one and the (usually multiple) meanings behind them.
Hob Gadling is a character that fandom has fallen in love with. I think this is clear to anyone that takes even a partial glance at Sandman fandom. This isn't a criticism - Ferdie's performance as Hob in the Netflix show has done wonders for Hob's character. He has made his version of Hob very easy to fall in love with!
But the truth is that in The Sandman comics, Hob is a minor character who we only get to know very little about. The story Hob's Leviathan appears in The Worlds End Sandman book. We only meet him twice before this, once in The Doll's House, where we are introduced to him in Men of Good Fortune, and again in Season of Mists when Dream comes to let him know that he may miss their next meeting. In both these issues, Hob is introduced via the narrator, and therefore I like to think that we are given a fairly honest representation of the kind of person he is. We watch him grow and learn throughout the centuries in MoGF, but one of the major takeaways from this I believe is that he tends to always be on the wrong side of history. He makes bad choices and can be a bit narrow minded. He is rude and selfish and also rather self-absorbed. I actually think that the performance of the voice actor who plays Hob in the Audible book emphasises these character flaws making him even more unlikeable in many ways, though I am aware that this could just be my own experience and opinion.
But Hob's Leviathan takes a different view of Hob. Literally. The narrator of this story is a young boy of 16 called Jim. Jim met Hob on a ship travelling from Bombay to Liverpool in 1914. Jim was working on the ship as a cabin boy and Hob had bought his passage back to England - though it is revealled at the end of the story that Hob actually owned the ship they were travelling on. It is clear that at this point in time, Hob is extremely wealthy.
Jim attends to Hob throughout the journey, and grows very fond of him. In Jim's tale, Hob is a good man, who is kind and thoughtful and cares about others. He saves the life of a stowaway (who turns out to be another immortal). He is shown to be patient, and funny, and very intelligent. Jim waxes poetic about how smart Hob is, and how much he impressed him. It is particularly clear in the Audible book that Jim is taken with Hob, to the point that it could arguably be a crush.
It is fascinating how much more likeable Hob is when narrated from the viewpoint of someone with a crush on him, whether this story is exaggerated through rose tinted glasses is of course something to consider. All the tales in World's End are just that, tales. There is a constant undercurrent of exaggeration and make believe to them where even the other patrons of the inn question elements to each of the stories. We are not supposed to take these stories as absolute fact, rather they are supposed to reveal to us more about the narrators as well as their own experiences existing in this magical and strange world.
When it is revealled that Jim is actually a girl called Peggy in disguise so they can get work on the ships, the quite obvious crush makes more sense to a heteronormative audience, but what I particularly like about this story is its queer potential. See in the comic, it isn't really clarified if Jim goes by Jim because they feel more themselves as a boy, rather than a girl, or if they are disguising themself as a boy just to get work as a means to an end. I would argue that the latter is the more obvious interpretation. Jim tells the other World's End patrons that they are getting too old to keep up the disguise and will eventually have to stop working in shipping, and that when that happens, they will take on a new name, a new identity and do something else, but that for now, the patrons can keep calling them Jim.
*for a lack of clarity around the point in the comic, I am going to use gender neutral pronouns for Jim going forward*
Now from Hob's POV, he figured out that Jim was a girl, and they talk about it briefly along with the sea serpent they saw. I think that at this point, Hob is impressively progressive compared to the previous times we have met him. Now whether or not this is biased storytelling from someone who has a crush on him remains to be seen, but if we take Jim's word as truth, not only is 1914 Hob a fair and honest man who is willing to pay the way of a stowaway and fully respect the secrets of a young girl disguised as a boy so they can work on ships, but he's also totally comfortable flirting with them.
Tumblr media
I like that he calls Jim the "handsome cabin boy". I like that this version of Hob, whether real or an exaggeration skewed by Jim's feelings for him, respects Jim's identity. Jim may be a girl in disguise, but Hob doesnt call her pretty, he calls him handsome.
It's all just a bit subtly queer and I like that for Hob (But then I would do, I'm a Dreamling shipper HA)
When Jim finishes their story, they state that they didn't see Hob again after that, but the comics later do give us a possible outcome to Jim's story...
We next see Hob in The Kindly Ones where he is mourning the death of his girlfriend Audrey. He briefly reveals that Audrey was the first person he had loved since Peggy, who was his lover until her death during the Blitz. Whilst it isn't made clear that Hob's lover Peggy is the same Jim that we meet in World's End, it is a bit too much of a coincidence. The timing adds up. If Jim was 16 in 1914, they'd be in their early 40s during the Blitz. Hob remains forever in his early 30s so I'd say its a safe bet that Jim eventually found Hob again and they were together. Hob loved them enough that he wasn't with anyone again until Audrey in the 80s. That's 50 years worth of mourning. A long time not to be with anyone, even for an immortal.
It's funny because we know so little about Hob, but one thing that I have seen commented on here a lot is that comic Hob is deemed to be as Straight as an arrow. Now I admit that the voice actor in the Audible book plays him very straight, but that is still only one interpretation.
All this is to say that I am fascinated with how the Netflix show will adapt this, since Hob in the show already comes across much kinder and more selfless than his comic counterpart. He already has an entire fandom viewing him as queer, and the comics certainly don't outright shut down such interpretations. There are moments in the comics that you have to wonder on. He does call Jim handsome rather than pretty, and when he talks to Audrey's grave he mentions his wives and loves as separate groups. He talks about finding it easy to get sex if you want it, and he talks about it in generally gender neutral terms. In Sunday Mourning Gwen reveals that she thought he was gay when she first met him, though her reasonings were that he knew so many dead people (a dark reminder that these comics were published at the height of the Aids epidemic). He reacts very badly to the news of Morpheus' death. He states on several occassions just how much he liked Morpheus, and he is one of the few people to wake up from the Wake with tears running down his cheeks. I would arguably state that its between Hob and Matthew as to who had the worst reaction to Morpheus' death, showing just how much both Hob and Matthew cared about him, and placing Hob on par with Matthew in the comics is a big deal. He seriously considers accepting Death's gift when she offers it, simply because Morpheus is dead. He doesn't, because at the end of the day, its just not in his nature to do so, and given he then dreams of Morpheus, I like to think that it was a test, that he passed.
When it comes to how the show will adapt all this, I genuinely think it will take a new approach with Jim/Peggy. I think they will be either a trans man, or at least non binary. But I think having Jim be a trans man is the better option. In the comics, Jim's tale is only very subtly queer, Jim clearly likes being Jim, but it seems like its a means to an end, a convenience in order to get work on the ships, rather than being something that is core to Jim's feelings on their gender. Besides, if we assume that Jim is indeed the Peggy Hob talks about in The Kindly Ones, then we know that Jim goes back to being Peggy when they get older and apparently continues living as a woman whilst they are with Hob, otherwise I doubt Hob would have referred to one of his greatest loves by a name they themselves rejected and only used she/her pronouns when talking about them. Nevertheless there is no reason for the show to take this approach, and if they DO decide that Jim should be a trans man, then their relationship with Hob is canonically a queer one. Trans men are men and if one of Hob's greatest loves is a trans man, then Hob is a queer man himself. I genuinely believe the show will take this route and I can't wait to see it.
Going back to my point about narrators bias, if MoGF, SoM, tKO, and TW are all narrated by a neutral third party, then this must be the true Hob. A not overly likeable rather selfish man. He has his good points, and he has certainly grown and changed over the centuries, and carries a lot of guilt for his past mistakes, but he is still quite self absorbed. Jim paints a picture of a rose tinted Hob that is far more the dreamy romantic older gentleman that took a young person under his wing. Which is fair enough.
The show is of course its own adaptation, with changes from the comics as it sees fit, but I do feel it's my duty to remind you that the show also has a narrator guiding the audience through its many stories. Dream of the Endless, Lord Morpheus, King of Nightmares and Prince of Stories himself. Take from that whatever you will.

[Spoilers for Sandman Overture]
I finished Overture last night and I feel like you might when you clean out a recently deceased relative's house and find all their diaries. I feel like I understand Morpheus's character so much better now, and I can't focus on anything else.
I'm thinking about how it must feel to have everyone give you shit about how cold you are, when you're the only one who remembers the catastrophe that came from your softness and mercy.
How little you'd want to reach out for help to people who, the last time you saw them, rejected you when you needed them the most, even when you begged them. People who are your family. Who are supposed to fucking care about you and the things you care about.
And how you might think that whatever terrible thing is happening to you might be deserved anyway because of how badly you've fucked up.
How agonizing it must be to just barely have a taste of freedom and realize that the very thing that fucked you up last time is happening all over again.
How close you'd be to the end of your rope, and how good it would sound for someone else to take over for you.
The line during his battle with Lucifer, "I am hope," which seemed so fucking corny to me before, absolutely breaks me now.
And don't get me started on how much more fascinated I am by Desire, how heart-wrenching that whole relationship is to me, and how when everyone says, "You two are so similar," to Dream, they probably have no idea how right they are.
Everything in the Sandman is cast in such a different light, I feel like I need to tear down everything I thought before and start over.

Sliding into here with a concept that I'm not sure I'll get around to writing in detail. I know it's been talked of before but I gotta bring it back 'round!
We've got Dream and Hob and they've finally gotten to a point where they've started shaking things up in the bedroom. Hob was perfectly happy with the traditional Human Sex they've been having so far. More than happy. It's Dream. It's his Friend, his Stranger. How could he not be?
Then Dream opens his mind to all the possibilities one can have when lying with an Endless, him specifically. So they enjoy their exploration through the impossible. Hob discovers he quite likes feeling small against a massive eight foot Dream. He's also particularly fond of the seemingly endless (ha) rotation of non-standard genitalia Dream can conjur up.
For their second Christmas together - a holiday he only celebrates because Hob does - he wraps himself in soft silk woven of stardust and lies under the tree for Hob to "unwrap" once he wakes. And it's just as wonderful as every other time, especially as the stardust ribbons come to life and start stroking and coiling around Hob's very eager form and restrains him while Dream feasts upon his warm body.
Then things in Dream's work life take a turn for the worst. The Kindly Ones come, Daniel takes over, and Dream is no longer Dream. He's Morpheus, for the time, but even that name doesn't fit as it used to. Murphy, when Hob's been cheeky about it and his new found humanity. But he's still "Duck" and "Dove", "Sweetheart" and "Love" and every other name Hob has bestowed upon him.
So he moves in with Hob and learns to be human. It takes a while. Things are very different than they used to be. But he gets better. And finds he almost enjoys his new life. Until they make their way to the bedroom after many months.
He can't contort his human body like he could before. There's no more mystery or change or intrigue. It's just him and his human flesh and his mortal cock and he's honestly unsure of how to handle it.
Hob notices because of course he does. He notices how his darling is still hard and leaking but his gaze and mind are elsewhere. So they stop. And doesn't that just send Morpheus spiraling.
They talk. Eventually. It's still a bit like pulling teeth with Morpheus. Humanity didn't do anything to dampen his pride and ego. But eventually the truth comes out and Hob swears to do everything in his power to show the love of his life that the sex has been fantastic because it was with him. Not because of his powers - yes, he'll admit, it was a perk - but humans have come up with quite a few ingenious ways to spice things up in the bedroom.
And when his first Christmas as a human rolls around, he decides to do his best to embrace humanity as Hob would. He grabs the soft red rope he had bought from the sex store they had visited together many times before and does his best to tie himself up like a gift as he had back when he was still Dream.
He lies under the warm glow of their tree. He had woken early, knowing well he could not sleep under here the whole night, but he rests and waits on the plush tree skirt for his lover to emerge.
And when Hob sees him all wrapped up for him that morning, he doesn't hesitate to show his appreciation for such a fine and thoughtful gift.
Ohhhhhhhh Dream. My heart. I'm screaming at the idea of human, vulnerable, darling Dream waking up early and wrapping himself up - looking down at his frail human form and trying to see what Hob sees. Something beautiful and worthy of love. The red rope looks nice against his pale skin, and he implicitly knows that Hob will think that he's perfect.
And Hob’s face when he sees Dream lit up by the lights on the Christmas tree, wrapped up like the gift he is... he's crying a bit, and smiling, and he's also genuinely super horny about this whole situation, and mainly just so arse over tits in love with his darling, darling Dream. The man that he loves with all his heart, sex or no sex. The man he will undoubtedly spend the rest of his life with.
He sucks Dream’s cock right there by the tree. It's not magical or earthshattering, it's just really fucking nice and lovely. And when they both go back to bed afterwards with a cup of tea, Dream doesn't feel less than what he was before. He feels more. More loved than ever.

Hello my love! I have a prompt for you which will hopefully be a good one!
Due to a certain situation involving the key to Hell, the Dreaming is hosting a vast party of Gods and Goddesses, Angels and Demons, and strange beings of Order and Chaos, to name a few.
Lucienne, being second in command, has been busy making sure everyone is comfortable, putting together the preparations for a successful banquet, and making sure no unwanted guests mess up her precious library.
Finally the days events have come to an end, and the guests have settled down in their chambers (although Lord Morpheus will be busy throughout the night). Lucienne just wants to put her feet up and read a good book - Roses latest novel looks quite thrilling! - but her night isn't quite over, as someone has come to visit the library out of hours, and Lucienne is perhaps in for more thrills than just Roses book!
Ooh, thank you for the excellent prompt! Who could it be?
Lucienne’s feet were finally up, and she’d just opened her book to the next chapter, when she heard unfamiliar footsteps in her library. It was not Gault, whose footsteps were as familiar and beloved as the dimple when she smiled, nor Morpheus, whose footsteps were silent when he visited as a cat and only barely less silent in his other forms. And it was definitely not Mervyn, whose footsteps were always accompanied by muttered swearing and the clatter of ladders or buckets. (He didn’t work this late anymore anyway, since Matthew introduced him to the idea of unions and time off.) Lucienne sighed and resigned herself to putting down her book. One of the guests must have wandered into the Library, or perhaps there was a dream or nightmare who needed counsel, but in any case, her day was not quite over yet.
Page number memorized, she put her book down on her desk and stood, facing the sound and pulling on her suit jacket once more. Might as well look official.
It was not hard to find the visitor. The grace of their steps made it apparent that they could tread silently if they wished, and only made their footsteps audible to give her warning. The slave of Lord Kilderkin, Manifestation of Order, approached carrying the cardboard box that was the current incarnation of their master.
“Welcome to the Library,” Lucienne greeted them with a slight bow.
“I thank you,” answered the slave. “I have an interest in Order, as you might imagine, and wondered if I might see how you manage to effect it here, in the Dreaming.”
“Of course! I’ll give you the tour, shall I?”
“Wonderful! I’ll just…” and the slave set their master (the cardboard box) down on Lucienne’s desk. “It’ll be safe enough here, right?”
“Certainly. I get very few visitors at this time of night.”
“Excellent. Now, I’ve been very curious about the categorization system you use in this Library. Surely it must be very difficult to find things back.”
“It’s actually not a problem, generally.” Lucienne waved her hand at the nearest corridor as they began to walk. “You see, early on I realized the recursive nature of categorizing information, how every branch divides into smaller and smaller categories, becoming more and more precise. And having recently been a raven, at the time I became librarian, I was reminded of the design of my feathers — one main shaft, with barbs coming off it and barbules off those. So I designed the Library in a similar way…”
“Fascinating! And that works well for you?” The slave didn’t seem sceptical but inquiring, as if he might try to implement a similar system somewhere.
“In fact, it does! In almost all cases. This section here, the Tumblr section, is a bit of an exception. I can never seem to find what I’m looking for here. But I have a feeling that’s a characteristic of Tumblr and not an issue with my system.”
“Ah. I would not know. The Lords of Order have no familiarity with Tumblr.”
“I would expect not. It seems to belong more to the realm of Chaos.” The slave nodded sagely and seemed to almost regretfully put aside their curiosity about the Tumblr section.
Just then, Morpheus streaked past them in his cat form. (Lucienne secretly thought of him as Meowpheus when he was in this form. But she’d never tell him that. Maybe she’d tell Matthew one day, if only she could trust him to keep it to himself.)
“Oh! A cat!” The slave was obviously startled to find an animal in the Library.
“Yes! It is not uncommon in some places for libraries to keep cats. In fact, here is the section on library cats and other cats who have jobs.”
“Fabulous!” Lucienne waited attentively as the slave browsed the shelves and eventually chose a couple books to borrow for the night. One was on library cats, and the other on library design and information categorization.
“Let’s just bring those back to my desk to enter in the Ledger, and you can pick up your master as well,” she suggested when they were finished.
“Of course. Thank you for the lovely tour, you’ve given me much to think about.”
“You are very welcome.” Lucienne smiled warmly but then turned to follow the guest’s eyes at the sudden shocked look on their face.
On her desk was the cardboard box, Kilderkin, Lord of Order. Sitting in it was Meowpheus. He stared at them with his haughty cat gaze (well, his normal gaze), obviously perfectly content with his place and in no mood to move.
“I. You. Um.” The slave looked at Lucienne in panic. “The Library Cat can’t just sit in the Lord of Order!”
“I’m so sorry,” she apologized smoothly. “I’m sure he will find his way to another comfy spot, Quite Soon Now.” She glared at Lord Morpheus, and he glared right back. But then he deigned to stand and saunter out of the box, shaking his back leg to show his disdain of her before leaping off the desk and onto the nearby window reading nook where his cat nest was.
The slave shakily picked up the Lord of Order, reaching inside the box for the note which had appeared.
“Get this cat out of me,” it said. “We are done here.”
“I’m sorry, Lucienne, I must go,” the slave apologized, bowing deeply.
“Of course. I’ll hold onto these in case you can come borrow them later.” She set the books aside on her quick reference shelf and escorted him out of the Palace to ensure no other offences would occur on the way.
Back in the Library once again she hesitated before picking her book up, looking at Meowpheus in his window nest.
“Really, my Lord,” she chided.
He blinked his cat eyes at her, looking smug and extremely proud of himself. She sighed and picked up her book, hiding behind it to roll her eyes. She might never fully understand the King of Dreams, but they had a good understanding.

honestly though i do think dream and destiny have one of the more underratedly funny sibling relationships
do they get along? no, not really! they care about each other, sure, and it looks on the surface like they're on good terms, because there's never any anger in it and they're both excessively formal
but then you actually look at their interactions and it's like watching two kids fight in slow motion while speaking only in a monotone

and my personal favourite - dream gets imprisoned in a black hole, in overture. desire is the only one who cares to do anything about it. but they don't have the power to pull dream out of there by themselves, only destiny has that
so what do they do instead? pull a ship out of the dreaming and drop it in destiny's garden. so that destiny summons him out of there to be like "dude get your shit off my lawn"

Sandman Inktober 2023, Day 3 Paths.
Tumblr media
So I wasn’t going to do today’s prompt but I was going through my Sandman comics ( as one does) and was reminded that Orpheus sings a song to open a portal to get to the dreaming! and I thought “hey a path! that’s gotta count, right?” lol
Anyway.
Don’t know if I translated the idea very well and I couldn’t do more detail work on this but I’m happy with what I did in the time work I put on it !! I might re-work it later if I have the time 🖤

Every time I write a new meta exploring the Netflix adaptation of the Sandman comics and what they changed, I draw the same conclusion. Even if I don't start the meta even considering that conclusion I can't get away from it. I've been wrapped up in the comic canon for a while now and the comics only have one ending and no other ending is really possible unless you really hyperfocus on Hob's dream. I totally support comic analysis that concludes that the ending is paramount and fixed and cannot be changed. Comic focused meta writers are adament the story must play out as per the comics and I respect that reading.
But then I delve into show meta again and I once again reach the same conclusion: they are changing it. They must be changing it. The show canon doesnt allign with the comics. Its too hopeful, too kind, too supportive.
Maybe too much hope is as much of a bad thing as not enough? There was never any hope in the comic universe. Overture makes that very clear. But the Netflix universe? Oodles of hope. Hope in all corners. Filled to the brim with hope.
I'm completely at a loss and in two minds about it. I'm fascinated and terrified about it. Perhaps we wont even get that far though. Maybe Netflix will cancel the show before we get a chance to see its natural ending. Season 2 could also totally do a 180 on the groundwork season 1 laid down so there is that. I don't know... I'm so confused by it all.

Why I love the idea of a great big Good Omens x The Sandman Crossover Gaimonverse ... (Ineffable Husbands and Dream of the Endless hobnobbing aside).
Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer ruling over the hopeless disasters which are the GO demons... Chef's kiss! Give me a twenty part, workplace comedy. With Lucifer being driven ever closer to a complete nervous breakdown by their shinnanigans. Until they throw Mazikeen over their shoulder, yell 'Fuck this, I'm out!' and rage quit.
The Endless and the Horseman existing in the same universe... Meaning there are tiers of Anthropomorphic Personifications. What does that make the Horseman? Insanely homicidal middle management?
Following Death around like obbsessive little ducklings.
Getting into all sorts of devilment with the Twins like their little chaos groupies.
Constantly checking in with Destiny like,
War: Is it the Apocalypse now?
Destiny: (Turns a page) No
Famine: Now?
Destiny: No
Pollution: Now?
Destiny: Do not make me leave this garden and come down there!
Being one of the main contributing factors in making their direct supervisor (Destruction) become a master hermit.
Most of Hob's down time being spent avoiding/messing with Sergeant Shadwell (This headcanon is stamped across my heart in glowing neon letters).
Adam Young being the bane of Destiny's existence. A reality warping, fate changing... Doodling all over the margins of Book of Destiny in crayola menace!
The image of Anathema and Johanna Constantine as professional associates of the British supernatural community is a thing wonderous to behold.
