I’ve chosen not to ignore this one because I have something very important to say.

This is not a nice thing to say to a writer.

I’ve been writing for fandom for coming up on three years, and I’ve gotten plenty of comments and asks in that time, many of them rude or demanding. What I’ve learned is that those types of comments actually do the opposite of what the speaker intends: it makes me not want to write, either that fic in particular or not at all.

Two weeks. Only two weeks between an update! Omg! I know I can put out a lot of content, but my god, don’t we all have creative blocks? Or IRL responsibilities and deadlines?

“Are we not going to get any new chapters even this year?” This one might take the cake. I got this on January 11, a whole eleven days into the new year. And on my birthday, to boot.

I generally ignore those comments. I find it’s better for my mental health that way. I delete them, and think about how now I don’t want to work on that fic, or worse, how I feel contrition because I haven’t updated, and maybe that anon has a point, and maybe it’s rude of me to leave people hanging…

But here’s the fucking thing. I have poured almost 1.8 million words onto Ao3 since I started writing fic, and I’ve not been paid for a single goddamn one of them. I have written every single word, every single one of my fics for free (and there’s 188 of them, many of which are Zutara smut, so feel free to check them out if you’re so inclined). This is a hobby. I do it because it brings me joy; it’s a break from the stress and responsibility of my offline life — which has not been a cake walk, particularly in the last year, and I know that no one knows it because I keep these lives separate, but my god, do you people think I just sit at the computer all day writing stories? Do I not have a real life to you? Am I not a real person to you?

Anyway. Fanfic writing is a hobby. It brings me joy — or it usually does. Comments like these do not bring me joy. They make me sad, angry, upset. They kill motivation to work on these stories. Sometimes they make me want to delete all my unfinished WIPs. Sometimes they make me think that it would be better if I just left fandom altogether.

This is how you leave a comment. This is how you let a writer know that you’re interested in an update. This comment put a smile on my face for the first time on a Zutara fic this year. Because everything else has basically been like the ones above.

“You’ll probably ignore this one too.” Let’s break this one down a bit, shall we? This is manipulative language. You are attempting to guilt me into responding to you. This is not ok to do to anyone. If I haven’t answered an ask, it’s likely because I’m busy or I just haven’t had the mental spoons to do it. Or I don’t have an answer.

I’m also not Marvel Studios with an entire team of writers. I’m just one person. I write what I write for me above anything else. The moment I forgot that was the moment I nearly left this fandom. I’m not going to let that happen again. If I leave, it’s going to be my choice on my time. Not because another person made me feel so bad that they pushed me out.

I’m turning my anons off. If people have something to say to me, they can do it with their blog names attached instead of hiding behind anonymity.

Trick or treat! 🧡💜

Hello friend! I spent entirely too long trying to decide what little treat I could give you. So here’s a little drabble for my Living Statues idea I’d had for @zkmythicalcreaturesweek I never got around to writing:

The statue was a gift from the Southern Water Tribe for his father, placed out in the garden by the turtleduck pond. It was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, carved from some unfamiliar black stone that must have been native to the arctic south. Whom ever had carved it took their time to put in the fine details: the lines of the statue’s palms and each eyelash were carved delicately into the stone’s smooth surface.

It was of a young woman with flowing hair and round eyes that seemed to follow you wherever you went. Most of the Fire Nation court marveled over it for the first few weeks after its arrival (it had been on display during one of his father’s lavish parties to be admired), but for Zuko there was something about it he didn’t quite like, although he couldn’t place his finger on it.

Zuko was neither superstitious nor silly, but sometimes he felt as though somehow that statue was alive, that in the darkest hours of the night the girl would step off of her stone pedestal and creep through the empty halls of the palace, her stone feet scraping lightly as her round eyes roved, looking for him.

It was foolish and stupid, and Azula would have surely made fun of him if he had ever dared to voice that irrational fear. That’s what it was—irrational. Statues didn’t move. But it did not stop Zuko from hurrying away from that statue when the last traces of twilight fled the sky, his heart thundering in his chest as his skin prickled, fearful that one of those cold stone hands would wrap around his shoulder as he fled.

No, it wasn’t rational at all. Yet Zuko could not quite convince himself that the statue wasn’t some alive creature, waiting, biding its time, searching for the perfect moment to creep through the palace and murder him in his sleep.

Is critical role good for dnd newbies? I see it trending every week but I have no idea what’s going on lol

girl you have no idea what you just unleashed with this question i am so sorry for what's about to unfold here - okay so! while critical role is absolutely amazing and everyone in it is so accomplished as VAs and performers, i would not recommend getting into it as a total newbie. (i asked my bestie who is probably one of the biggest critters on earth and her answer was literally "nO IT ISN'T" lmao)

i can however recommend the way i got into it! i already knew the basics, have always known them because my uncle works for my country's dnd publisher so i've always been exposed to it, but i didn't actually know the full rules until i started listening to NADDPOD. that's a podcast called Not Another D&D Podcast and i personally think it's the best way to get your toes into the ttrpg world. there's only three players (with the occasional guest) + the dm, and the good part is that one of the players, jake, is a complete newbie, so the dm explains a lot to him as they go! which is very useful for when you're also a newbie, because you get to learn with jake and they start with level 1 characters so you're getting the full experience along with him.

i think you might enjoy it because it's heartwarming but also very unserious! they make a lot of jokes throughout the episodes, and they have great banter, there's a bit of spice in it (emily's character moonshine is always dtf and it's hilarious, and then jake's character hardwon is constantly pretending like he's not a virgin but he has ZERO GAME). and ofc if you do get into it, i expect you yelling at me about it in my dms. in fact, i insist you do because shit gets wild fast. have fun, and welcome to the wonderful world of dnd! <3
