WRITING TIPS🗣️

hello and welcome to my soup. my letter soup. someone asked a very long time ago if i had any writing advice, and i said no, because writing is very in my head for me, but having thought about it there are some tips over the years that have changed the way i write! so

no. 1

youve probably seen this before. its what i call in my head the 70% rule -

- characters should never communicate more than 70% of what they feel to those around them.

70% is an absolute max, too. most of the time, characters interacting with each other should only articulate 50-60% of what they mean. think of your own life and how much you can struggle to say what you want, or say what you need. you can’t say it perfectly, right? it might be due to the strength of what theyre feeling, difficulty being honest, where they are. the likelihood of ever being to perfectly articulate yourself is low. utilise that, it makes conversations so much more fun to read!

no2

adding onto this, unreliable narrator should always, always (imo) play somewhat of a role in a narrative voice, unless omniscient third person is being used. i used to write a lot of first person pov, and now i prefer third person (growing up🤝🏻) but in third person a narrative voice can and still should be just as strong as in first person - tall ask, but its possible.

we are seeing the world through this character’s eyes: act like it. even if another character is a mess, if your pov character wouldnt notice it, the pov is going to be affected by that. they dont know what others are thinking or feeling. theyre guessing. and those guesses are going to be informed by their own experiences or perceptions of those around them, along with the world in general.

show not tell. this kiiind of links back to no2 bc its sort of related to narrative voice. trust your readers to pick up on implications and read between the lines. every single interaction / scene has purpose - and it doesnt have to be clear!! i promise that even if readers dont get the purpose, they’ll pick up on the vibes🫵🏻

you do not have to solve every plot hole or character flaw to show development. in fact id encourage you NOT to, especially if ur work is <30k.

i <3 toxicity and rancid vibes, so im a bit biased on this one. its definitely sort of an acquired taste. 😕✌🏻 but in short one shots (anything under 40/50k, id consider short, lol) fixing everything is unnecessary!! you can leave things unfinished! it makes everyone feel incredibly human and raw!!

relating to no4 slightly, tension.

never never never show your full hand. theres always something left to be revealed! whether its about the world itself, another character, or someone’s motivations, it needs to be kept secret. riiiight until the end

(this is more for longform writing)

finally

world - your characters have to be casual about where they are, with little exception. the BEST aus ive read are where the characters feel casual about the crazy things happening bc this is THEIR normal, and its taken for granted so much but it really makes or breaks a work.

slang or language, reactions to stuff that we as readers might be alarmed by but they arent - think a burn in a hospitality au or injuries in sports aus - they might not be as big a deal to the characters since this is their normal.

exceptions include charas thrown into ur world brand new / really big events - essentially you pick and choose where the biggest reactions are to events for plot🫶🏻

any writing tips for beginners?

First off, can I just say, it is genuinely such an honor to get asked this question? It makes me so happy.

The biggest thing I would recommend for beginners is just to write. The more you write, the more used to it you get. I know that doesn't sound like very productive advice, but it is the truth. I have been writing fics since I was twelve and I am twenty one now. My first fics were shit. One of my earliest ones (its a BSD Akutagawa x Reader fic called Project X I started when the show first came out back in 2016 and finished in 2022 that is still up on my wattpad, which is linked in my pinned post, if you want proof I am not lying) is genuine shit, but I put a lot of passion and a lot of time into it (to the point that if you read the book, you watch me learn how to write). It was the practice and time spent that did the trick. So write and write and write. You don't have to post it anywhere or show it to anyone until you feel like you are ready (or at all). The more you do it, the more everything will fall into place.

The second thing I would recommend is to write the stories that you want to read, whether fanfiction or not. You have to be invested in whatever you're making in order for it to work. If you don't care, you wont put the effort in. You wont take the time for it. The only reason I started writing in the first place was because I would read fic after fic and I never saw anyone else putting the ideas I had on to paper (this actually lead to me starting a mini trend in the BSD fic community on wattpad lol). This will also help, if you are putting your work out into the world in some way, with the idea of reward. Whether through notes or readers or whatever, as long as you like what you are writing and you want to read what you are making, it is worth it and it is enough.

Third is to read. One of the ways I developed my own writing style was by taking note of the things I liked about other peoples writing styles (doesn't matter whom. I take a lot of the way I write from poets and authors like Annie Dillard and Terry Pratchett as well as other fic writers). So much of writing is about aesthetics and personal preference. Once I knew what I defined as 'good writing,' I could figure out how to morph my own work into something I deemed 'good.' This also counts for reading the things you yourself have written. I go back and re-read and edit my own work all the fucking time, both out of an enjoyment for the stories I create and in an effort to make them better. The best thing you can do is to read your work out loud. Listen to what you change when you read it out loud, what sounds odd or uncomfortable, where there are gaps. It really helped me when I first started writing fics almost ten years ago, and it still helps me now.

This is a weird one, but when you're writing about emotions, try to feel the emotion yourself. Think about what something like fear does to a person. Picture the situation you are writing and take the time to think about the ways in which you personally, or your character, would react to it. Writing reactions, body movements, things like that, has always been the most difficult for me, especially when its in-between dialogue and not just big blocks of text. Taking a moment and closing my eyes, feeling the shiver down my spine or the burst of sudden joy, really helps pin down the ideas and figure out how to describe them.

Also, if you know other languages, think about the things you like about the way those function and how you can incorporate that into your work. A lot of the way I structure sentences comes from ancient Greek, for example, with my usage of participles and timing. It doesn't have to be an ancient language though! And it doesn't even really have to be another language. All that matters is that you are actively thinking about the way the words interact with one another and what is pleasing to you. English is such a flexible and fun thing, there is so much meaning in every word and if you want to, it can be really fun to play around with. (I am a philologist. I am sorry for the little rant.)

That being said, it is important that you understand the grammar of the language you are writing in. This might just be a personal thing, but incorrect grammar tends to really bug me. Once you know the rules, they are easier to follow and it makes a huge difference. Also, incorporating techniques like varied sentence length/structure and literary devices like metaphor, allusion, ekphrasis, and simile can really make a piece more enjoyable for a perspective reader (whether the reader is yourself or someone else.)

Write what you know, write what you love, write what you want, write what you need, write. Don't worry about it being 'good enough,' if it is on the paper it is good enough. The hardest part is starting. Once you've got that under your belt, anything is possible.

Now that this post is almost excessively long, I am gonna make myself stop. I really hope at least some of this made sense and that you find it helpful.

That's a little broad, but hopefully these help!

A nest/den can be anything! It doesn't *have* to be your bed you sleep in every night, although that's common. Maybe you make it underneath a table or desk, or in your closet! It's up to you

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to nest! Sure, you can have a "depression nest" which may affect your mood, but messy nests are not inherently bad

Feel free to peruse your smelly stores! Bath and body works, Yankee Candle, hell even the perfume section of your local outlet store (like JC Penny). It's okay if you don't have your scent 100% figured out yet and if it fluctuates. That's life, baby!

Personally, I haven't found a perfume/spray of my alpha yet but I have found a candle. I love burning it, and his flannel has a place in my nest. I do have perfumes I mix with my main scent (strawberries) though I know my mate is getting me a perfume that'll be perfect for the upcoming holidays.

You don't need a pack to be a/b/o! I know it's tempting and maybe you feel pressured to find your mate or your pack, but being solo is okay!! Especially if it's the safer option

Back to every day aspects, I scent my nest with a room spray, I do "goofy" things like refer to my feet as "paws" or my toes as toe beans. Don't be embarrassed, do what makes you happy and don't care what others think.

Personally I'd definitely go look at the kin and therian communities. They can also be good resources and good friends!

On any normal day, you wouldn’t attend the Hellfire club while in little space. The whole thing being too long and scary for your little brain, but today you were feeling extra small and didn’t want to let your daddy go,

“alright pumpkin, you can stay but if it get too scary - you have to tell me ok?”

you nodded excitedly, it’s not like you’d never been or see him play. you knew how extravagant your daddy gets, how well he tells his stories. you didn’t care, you wanted to be with him,

“otay dada, i pwomise!”

you held out your pinky for him, which he of course accepted, locking his much larger finger around yours. you were about to take a seat on floor next to his throne, when he wrapped a hand around your bicep,

“now what do you think your doing, baby cakes?”

before you could answer, he was already pulling you onto his lap in his throne. you were sitting with your legs hanging over the side, “you sit here silly, with me” he tickled your thigh, “you and i are the only ones allowed to sit here ok?”

you smiled at him, he always makes you feel special. as everyone started flowing in they said hi to you and eddie, and the game begun. you were doing pretty well, only fidgeting some, twisting around so you were facing him. you had your head on his chest, loving the rumble against your ear as he spoke. giggling at how it tickled you, making eddie smile. as the game kept going, you felt yourself getting tired and let out a small yawn, which he obviously saw.

“here baby, hold on,” he grabbed your small blankey out of your bag, as well as your stuffie and paci. he wrapped you and your stuffie in a burrito and gently slipped the paci past your lips. “there, is that better?”

you nodded in his neck, snuggling deeper into him. he kissed you on the forehead, then nose, then over the guard of your paci. “i love you sweetheart, it’s ok to fall asleep. i’ll be right here”. the rest of the group making mock gagging sounds, making eddie throw something at dustin’s head. you started to doze off, jumping a bit when everyone cheered,

“shhhh! my baby is sleeping”

eddie whisper yelled at the kids, glaring at them. he shushed you lightly when you let out whine, kissing your cheeks. “shhh, i’m sorry lovey. go back to sleep” he rocked you the best he could with your current position, which was more just swaying. “i love you” he mumbled into your hair, “wuv you dada,” you lifted your head to give him a kiss through your paci, and snuggled your eyes into the junction of his neck.

moments like this are his favorite, him just holding you, protecting you from the world. same for you, knowing you are safe and sound in your daddy’s arms, the best place in the world.

ill do figure skating purely because i am a figure skater, not a hockey player, and i would wanna do quite a bit of research into how NHL drafts work in canada / the US before id write it but a lot of these probably could apply to both aus

- gojo singles skater, one of the greats, holds some world records (id base his skating off nathan chen’s or yuzuru hanyu’s, probably) and he keeps trying to land 4a even though yaga chews him out for it

- shoko / getou in pairs (PAIRS, NOT ICE DANCE!!!!!!) and they’re pretty dominant too

- getou used to skate singles and had a rivalry with gojo in early juniors but switched to pairs after a minor injury that made it difficult for him to continue to work quads/triple axel. shoko can land quad throws though

- yuuji, megumi and nobara are all singles skaters, still in juniors

- mechamaru and miwa are ice dancers :)

- yaga coaches all the singles skaters

- gojo does biellman spins which are rare for men - hes flexible compared to his competitors

- haibara is a hockey player and hes like the figure skaters’ pet even though they all hate hockey players

- thinking about making maki and yuta a pairs team but honestly they also could both be in singles

- yuki and choso were in pairs until choso sustained a pretty major injury, yuki coaches getou and shoko now

- yuki and choso ice dance on a national level post retirement

- most of them work the counter at the ice rink for extra cash, especially the juniors who are straight up BROKE lol

- gojo is super popular with the locals and when he comes into the rink everyone starts behaving immediately

- gojo and getou, when they work the counter together, have this uncanny ability to a) not bang into each other and b) to send hand signals at each other from across the rink so that they can steal penguin skate aids from children who are annoying them

- nanami is the long suffering rink manager, who used to skate singles but got priced out of the sport, when he comes down to actually work the counter they all know theyre in deep shit

- gojo’s best jump is 3A and 4Lz and his technique is pretty perfect too

- toji is banned from the sport for pulling a tonya harding

- yuji started late but he’s annoyingly good at picking stuff up fast. he turned up at the rink begging gojo for lessons and gojo was like alright kid seeing you fall will be fun and then yuji is acc mad good and gojo’s like .. wait..

- megumi is the most technically proficient of the three, he has a quad salchow and a triple axel, yuuji has a quad flip and a quad lutz but can’t land a 3a to save his life (hes working on it!)

- mai would be like trusova/valieva/sherbakova. horrible technique but quads!

- nobara has a 3A which makes her competitive, but yaga refuses to teach her quads

-stsg dating rumours at the rink go round every year at xmas. theres a betting pool for when theyll finally get together. only shoko getou and gojo know theyre already dating and have been since their junior days

- nanami also knows, but doesnt care

- gojo drives the zamboni and honks at kids who watch and getou rides on the back sometimes

- yuji asks to learn how to drive the zamboni and gets it stuck. he never asks again

- megumi throws a penguin at an annoying customer one time on christmas eve because they come back and ask to switch skate sizes six times in thirty minutes

- getou’s artistry and musicality is unmatched but gojo’s performances are almost as good

- gojo shakes the vending machines to get free food even though hes a millionaire from sponsorships

- theyre based in japan! :]

anyways yeah my thoughts on this au is that it would be SO SILLY
