The role of the shark in our oceans is to keep our ecosystems healthy and in balance! This is critically important as over 50% of the air we breathe and over 70% of the food we eat comes from our oceans! Without sharks our Oceans would collapse and this would cause our own demise as well! So why have we allowed shark populations to collapse? Greed for money! Although our species claims to be intelligent, we are the only species that destroys our only home! Presently over 90% of the large sharks are already gone and over one third of the shark species are listed with some type of endangered status. We must end their needless slaughter! We must let our oceans heal! The diversity and abundance of wildlife was incomprehensible in those days! Although I have absolutely no regrets about my childhood in the sea, these days, it seems as though I reflect back to the much better days, when life flourished everywhere you looked! Sadly my baseline is so early that it's very difficult sometimes for me to focus on the now, because I'm missing the then, the past so much! My generation was taught that the sea was an in exhaustible resource and we took and took and took before we learned that we were decimating the planet! I believe that's a big part of why I am such a hard core conservationist doing everything I possibly can To protect the few animals that we still have left! Caribbean Reef Sharks are at more ecotourism shark dives worldwide than any other species of shark. I'm incredibly grateful for these sharks because this specific species is what starts most normal scuba divers into becoming life long shark divers. And soon as they realize that everything they've been taught about sharks is completely wrong by 1st hand experience, they usually quickly become obsessed and start diving with every species there is as well as and most importantly help save them! They essentially show the true nature of sharks for millions of first timers! Sadly the relentless drive for shark fin soup has decimated shark populations worldwide. In 1967 it was put on the endangered list. The huge demand for their skin and meat nearly wiped them out however huge conservation efforts actually reversed their collapse and the American Alligator is no longer on the endangered list! Cousteau said it best, "We only protect what we love! I love all wildlife, so thank YOU very much for all your help! My favorite Alligator in the wild, Fluffy!
