For years, Derek Gow worked his 400-acres in western England as a conventional sheep and cattle farm. But as both a farmer and conservationist, he knew that wasn’t right for nature. Now, he’s using his experience with British rewilding projects to return his land to what it once was: a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem.
He took down the fences and sold off the livestock, replacing domesticated animals with ancestral species, chosen for the way they create habitat for wild creatures, large and small.
Derek also reintroduced beavers to his land. Beavers had virtually disappeared from England, but Derek was on the forefront of reestablishing the species. Known for their ability as eco-engineers, they return the landscape to a natural, healthy state and restore water to the ecosystem. He’s also breeding a smaller cousin of the beaver that is another important eco-architect: water voles. They had also almost vanished, having lost the water features needed for their survival. His large-scale breeding program will export water voles throughout Britain to restore habitat and provide prey for raptors and other predators.
Piece by piece, Derek Gow is reassembling the puzzle that was the wild landscape of Great Britain, and restoring hope along the way.

I just found out that when you're going through a Permanent Residence application process, volunteering is fine as long as it's not activities that are usually paid work. If someone else is being paid to do the same activities or can be paid to do the same activities, then this will be interpreted by relevant authorities as work. Does anyone know of volunteering possibilities in museums in the GTA (preferably Hamilton) where this does not apply??? _______ Follow for more conservation memes. ❤️ . . . .

On 15th July 1914 Gavin Maxwell, the Scottish novelist and naturalist, was born at Elrig, Dumfries and Galloway.
Gavin Maxwell was educated at Stowe School and the University of Oxford, then became a freelance journalist, though ornithology remained his special interest. He served with the Scots Guard in World War II.
In 1945 he bought the island of Soay and described in Harpoon at a Venture he had an unsuccessful attempt to establish a shark fishery there.
Two of his most popular books were the best-selling Ring of Bright Water and the sequel The Rocks Remain about his life with two pet otters in his seaboard cottage in the west Highlands
Maxwell’s prolonged stay in Sicily resulted in two books, God Protect Me from My Friends , about the bandit Salvatore Giuliano, and The Pains of Death, on the poverty-stricken lives of the islanders. A Reed Shaken by the Wind is an account of his travels among the marsh dwellers of southern Iraq.
I return to Ring of Brightwater as this is no doubt the book, and film that you will most remember Gavin Maxwell for, a stone plaque there now marks the grave of Edal, the otter who died in the fire that also destroyed Maxwell's house. Cut into the stone is one of his most-quoted edicts: "Whatever joy she gave to you, give back to Nature."
The pics are of Maxwell and one of the otters, third pic is the plaque at Glenelg, and finally a statue in honour of Maxwell and his otters at Monreith, Dumfries & Galloway.

#JusticeForWayneLotter Al Jazeera reports: Eleven sentenced to death for killing #conservationist in Tanzania: Wayne Lotter, who was murdered in Dar es Salaam in 2017, may have been singled out because of his anti-poaching activities. A court in Tanzania has sentenced 11 people to death over the 2017 murder of renowned anti-poaching activist Wayne Lotter. Conservationist Lotter, a 51-year-old South African based in Tanzania, was a founder of the PAMS Foundation which worked to stop the poaching of elephants and trafficking of ivory in the East African country. He was shot dead in Dar es Salaam when the taxi he was travelling in was ambushed. The exact motive for his killing is still unknown but colleagues of Lotter believe he was singled out for his work on protecting elephants. Those sentenced to death on Friday include nine Tanzanians and two citizens of neighbouring Burundi. Judge Leila Mgonya of the High Court said there was compelling evidence that linked the 11 to the two counts on which they were charged: conspiracy to commit murder and murder. Tanzania has been one of the African countries worst hit by elephant poaching, losing more than 66,000 elephants in 10 years, but interdiction efforts mean poaching has declined in recent years. A report by the NGO Global Witness found that worldwide, 200 environmentalists had been killed in 2021 and more than 1,700 in the last 10 years. * #repost from @saving_the_wild @pamslovefoundation https://www.instagram.com/p/CmRNplHs1v9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Quote
A restorationist restores a piece to its original form, whereas a conservationist simply preserves a piece so it won’t change any further. As the conservationists like to say: a restorationist would have put arms back on the Venus de Milo. A conservationist ensures no more limbs fall off. She seeks to be invisible, to neither reimagine nor reinvent, to keep what is broken exactly as it is, to never replace what is missing.
