We are excited to announce that the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee has approved the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. The legislation which was reintroduced by Sens.Cory Booker and Shelley Moore Capito was passed by the committee with a 24 to 4 vote and will be included in the Endless Frontier Act S. 1260. This is great news for sharks and the oceans as the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act makes it illegal to buy, sell, possess or move shark fins or any product containing shark fins, except for certain Dogfish fins. Although shark finning is illegal in the U.S. the country does not have a total ban on the shark fin trade and is a major shipping hub for illegal fins. We want to personally thank Sens. @corybooker @capitoforwv @maria.cantwell_ and @senlisamurkowski i, and House reps. @kilili_sablan @congressman_mccaul . And a huge shout out to the shark advocates and shark community. Without all of your support changes like these wouldn’t be made possible. Although this success brings the U.S. one step closer to being fin free, the fight isn’t over yet.
