Graves Headcanons from Shadows’ POV (Part 1):
((Or, i wanna share some silly hc in this format in between all the art stuff • 3•))
Every Shadow, from the grizzled Spec Ops operator to the fresh faced civilian, no matter what background or experience, always had Graves as that one topic of gossip they turned to when things got too slow.
It’s become both habit and sport to catalog every detail of their Commander and then discuss their findings in a twisted peer review, preferably with alcohol involved, as if gathering intel on a high value target before the op.
Through the years it had been tradition for Elder Shadows to pass on Graves ‘lore’ to the newest Shadows and encourage them to take up the hobby of Graves Watching (it’s effective observation training, you see…if you happen to catch feelings for the boss, well, it’s par for the course)
There’s a ‘published’ (a fat binder of loose leaf) Graves Manual floating around,(bland cover and backing and with dick doodles all over for extra camouflage, pockets full of photos of the Commander from various angles) on base with multiple entries:
- first notable observation: Graves is fucking pretty. Too pretty (and relatively young) to be head of a band of mercenaries. And he knows he’s pretty (been seen smirking at tongue tied, blushing baby Shadows and civilians alike). Rival PMCs and militaries, on the rare chance SC has to cooperate with them, would ogle in envy as the Commander strutted around and barked orders in his tight preferred BDUs (the Shadows preen with pride at this. Every. Damn. Time)
- Graves is every bit the outspoken Texas stereotype. He’s loud, worships at the alter of Texas Barbecue, an avid Dallas Cowboys fan (staff found a jersey in his closet), had been winning gun competitions since he was old enough to compete (off-hand boast from the man himself) and blasts country music both out of love for the genre and out of sadistic spite (Every cookout. The trick is to get a stealthy Shadow to switch playlists while Graves is busy grilling)
- but he’s also been observed waiting for his Shadows to finish speaking, listening intently with full on eye contact (a bit overwhelming for the newbies). He prefers to workout in the evenings, alone, when everyone else would be in the rec rooms or asleep. He’ll take his tablet up to the roof and work in solitude drafting tedious emails or planning a difficult op. There are days, when nothing of note is scheduled, when he’ll almost retreat into himself and bask in the Company’s presence instead of engage.
- it’s this duality that started the Shadows’ fixation on Graves: a pretty loudmouth with Depth (the Shadows chuckled over this description but it was true dammit)
-the man is tight lipped about his childhood and family; braver Shadows have asked but were diverted to other topics or out right shut down (Note: more data needed on this!)
-his personal quarters are spotless and put together (bed made with sheets tightly tucked in, boots shined and neatly placed, everything in its place), his meeting room where he entertains clients is pristine and posh in furnishings, and yet his work office is an utter disaster, organized chaos is a charitable descriptor.
-the Shadows conclude each room represents a facet of the man; the orderly quarters is habit driven from years as a Marine, the opulent meeting room is the face of a successful CEO he wants to present to the world, and his work room, the one filled with binders, reports, coffee stains, knick knacks from his Shadows, is the realest representation of Graves out of the three, the Graves only they were privy to (high fives were exchanged over this big brain discovery, the Shadow who posited this theory was promptly dog piled)

A Texas-led bill that would mandate AM radio capability in car manufacturing was blocked from passing in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, requested a unanimous consent decision on his AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. The legislation was blocked by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who said the mandate on private companies would be an overstep of congressional power.
For months, Cruz has pushed for vehicle manufacturers to retain AM radio in new car models to protect emergency communication channels and diverse content. He partnered with Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., in May to introduce the legislation, which had broad bipartisan support in the Senate.
A corresponding bill was introduced in the House and has 191 cosponsors, including two Democrats and 12 Republicans from Texas.
AM radio is “enormously important to millions of Texans,” Cruz told The Texas Tribune in October. He noted the platform is essential for diverse talk radio — especially for conservative voices.
“I think silencing those voices is enormously harmful to both free speech but also to a robust democratic process,” Cruz said.
On the Senate floor Tuesday, Cruz pointed to conservative commentators Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck, who all found audiences on AM radio.
“AM radio is a haven for people to speak, even if their views are disfavored by the political ruling class,” Cruz said on the Senate floor. “Rush Limbaugh would not exist without AM radio. The views of my friend, [Rand Paul] the Senator from Kentucky, would be heard by many fewer people without AM radio.”
AM radio in rural Texas and other southern states is also a platform for religious, local news and sports programming. Local stations will also run chain or network programming with more well-known commentators, according to Al Cross, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues.
Some rural communities are dependent on getting local interest information from a single radio station or single newspaper, Cross said.
“If you allow the manufacturers to not put AM on cars, then you're killing off an essential part of the media landscape of the United States,” Cross said.
Supporters of the bill also point to AM radio’s importance as a means to protect emergency communication channels. A fall 2022 Nielsen survey showed AM radio reaches over 80 million Americans monthly.
“During times of disaster, AM radio is consistently the most resilient form of communication,” Cruz said.
AM radio is used as an alert system by federal, state and local agencies to communicate in times of disaster when other forms of communication fail, like during a power outage.
Cruz said he was confident that the legislation would pass overwhelmingly if brought to the floor for a vote, but since it was blocked on Tuesday it now awaits scheduling by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The congressional pressure already provoked change in the industry. Days after the bills were introduced in May, the CEO of Ford announced that the company would keep AM radio in 2024 models.
Car companies started cutting AM radio capacity to simplify manufacturing and because of assumptions that American consumers don’t find AM radio necessary, according to Oscar Rodriguez, the president of the Texas Association of Broadcasters. Companies also can make revenue from car owners’ subscription-only radio services.
“It became very clear very quickly to the automakers that this is a highly valued service that's extraordinarily important,” Rodriguez said. “It's not just an entertainment service. It is an emergency communications service.”
AM station signals cover 90% of the American population, according to the National Association of Broadcasters, and are able to continue operations during power outages.
But a number of national trade associations have defended manufacturers’ right to exclude AM capacity, arguing that FM radio, internet access and text emergency alerts can replace the loss of AM radio.
“This is giving preference to a technology that is facing fierce competition,” said India Herdman, manager of policy affairs for the Consumer Technology Association.
A FEMA strategic plan pointed out that Americans are “moving away” from radio and broadcast television as primary sources of news and information, one reason for emergency managers to prioritize alerts to smartphones and other methods.
Herdman said that a mandate for AM radio contradicts previous congressional action authorizing federal funding for updated emergency communications.
“What are we spending those appropriated dollars for if we're just going to go back to using century-old technology?” Herdman said.
But in a state like Texas, with a significant rural population, proponents of AM broadcasting argue the access is key.
Cooper Little, executive director of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association, said Texans in the agricultural sector rely on AM radio for reports on livestock and markets, as well as severe weather alerts.
“Things happen at a moment's notice,” Little said. “In areas where there's not necessarily cell service, that's how you spread the word.”

The 1,000th F-35 Has Been Built
Delays with a key upgrade program mean Lockheed Martin has yet to deliver the 1,000th F-35 and others to their customers.

Lockheed Martin has hit a huge milestone in F-35 Joint Strike Fighter production. However, that accomplishment, while outstanding, is complicated by the ongoing saga surrounding the development and testing of Tech Refresh-3 (TR-3) hardware configuration. TR-3 underpins the F-35's future capabilities, known collectively as Block 4. Delays with TR-3 mean that F-35s are being parked and not delivered after they are constructed, waiting for these features. So is the case for the 1,000th F-35.

We asked Lockheed Martin about the status of deliveries of F-35s, including the 1,000th example, and they gave us the following statement:
"We continue to produce F-35s at rate and have jets in various stages of the final production process. Once these jets receive the necessary TR-3 hardware and final TR-3 software is available, they will continue through the production process, including parking, until they are delivered."
Regardless, hitting the 1,000 mark is really an incredible accomplishment for the controversial program that has struggled significantly at times.
As of early January, the F-35 enterprise has amassed over 773,000 flying hours, trained over 2,280 pilots and 15,400 maintainers across 14 flying services around the world, and flown more than 469,000 total sorties. There are now 32 bases and 11 ships hosting or capable of hosting F-35 units. As of now, there are a whopping 17 countries participating in the international Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.

Demand for the F-35 has never been higher. Recent geopolitical events and shifting threats have spiked orders. For newer customers or existing ones that are ordering more jets, getting TR-3 jets and potentially Block 4 capabilities will be of significant value. They will be receiving a far more mature aircraft and one with drastically expanded capabilities and growth potential than past versions.
Block 4 will include many new features, including much-expanded processing power, new displays, enhanced cooling, new EOTS and DAS electro-optical sensors, and a slew of additional weapons that will really unlock the F-35's potential. Above all else, the jet's new radar and electronic warfare suite should give it its biggest boost. The electronic warfare aspect alone is the biggest advantage Block 4 will bring, according to the Air Combat Command's top uniformed officer.

The current issue is that F-35s need a new hardware backbone and associated baseline software, collectively called TR-3, to handle the various demands of the Block 4 upgrades. TR-3 has and continues to suffer numerous delays in its development.
The increasing age of the F-35 program's current fleet of test jets and other limitations in existing test infrastructure, especially with regard to software labs on the ground, have compounded these issues. The first flight of an F-35 test jet with a version of the TR-3 backbone took place in January 2023 and efforts are underway to create a dedicated TR-3 test force with a total of six Joint Strike Fighters.

As of December, the expectation is that the development of TR-3 will be finished sometime between April and June of this year, according to Defense News. If that schedule holds, this work be done between a year and 18 months later than expected.
The delays have also translated into significant added costs for the F-35 program. At a House Armed Services Committee hearing in December, Representative Donald Norcross, a Democrat from New Jersey, said that problems with TR-3 had led to a $1 billion cost overrun. The full estimated cost of the F-35 program though the end of its expected lifecycle in the 2070s is currently pegged around around $1.7 trillion, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

At the House Armed Services Committee hearing last month, Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael Schmidt, the current head of the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO), seemed less than optimistic about the likelihood of there being no further TR-3 delays.
"Relative to the stability issues that were that we're seeing, we are working through them. ... I wish I had all of the solutions in place that prove to me that when I do something in the lab, it's going to show up that way in the air," Schmidt told the assembled legislators. "We have a number of fixes addressing the stability challenges. We will get to a stable, capable, maintainable airplane here."
However, "the data tells me it will be in the middle of spring, but I would have had a more positive answer six months ago ... so I don't have a super solid 'I can guarantee you this date,'" he added.
After the completion of the development of the TR-3 package, these improvements will still need to be integrated into existing jets. The F-35 program is separately pursuing upgrades to the Pratt & Whitney F135 engines that power all variants of the Joint Strike Fighter, as well as power and thermal management systems, which will also be critical for enabling Block 4 capabilities. The issues surrounding the F135 engine have become a very hot topic of debate.

In the meantime, the U.S. military has made clear that it will not accept any new F-35s until the TR-3 issues are ironed out. This is ostensibly because the necessary checkout flights cannot be conducted on the jets until the hardware and its core software work reliably.
So, for at least another few months, the 1,000th F-35, and many others, are set to stay parked away waiting for work on the core TR-3 upgrades to be finished.

For example, I see Hermione as a New Yorker, and I'm torn between Florida, Arizona, and Texas for Draco, Harry would be from California or Hawaii, Luna would be from Oregon, Pansy would be from Utah, Neville is from Washington, and I'm confused about the Weasley's... I want to say Texas, but they don't fit Texas. I don't really know much about Theo, so let's throw him into Alaska.
LOL this is the silliest thing we've ever done. i'm going to try and leave politics out of it as much as possible?
Harry: Colorado. laid back, a little bit of everything. it's got mountains, and farms, and desert. it's got big cities and small towns, which speaks to his adaptability and his overall lack of self sometimes. there's harsh landscape but made it's beautiful because of it's severity.
Ginny: Nevada. don't let the red rock mountains and the dessert fool you, this is a lush environment if you look beyond the surface which is a bit like ginny's front that she puts up for everyone else. at first glance she's vegas, but get to know her and she's the spring mountains. also wild horses live here
Hermione: I like New York for her! but a borough? maybe brooklyn? she's the lifetime new yorker who is a bit desensitized to all the batshit things going on in her own head. like the bodega rats and the guy dancing on the street corners to no music. that's just new york! she's got a crazy schedule, and she never sleeps, but that's only because there's so much that she needs to get DONE!
Draco: Connecticut. full stop. but like the blue blood, children of the revolution, ivy league legacy, kind of connecticut. He's got a yacht and a beach house and he actively talks shit about the families from Massachusetts who infiltrate the town in the summer time.
Ron: North Carolina. traditional with lots of history, but also up for anything. He can go big city without losing his rural roots. family is always a priority. the best fucking beaches around.
Padma: Virginia. actually a commonwealth, the state belongs to the people, not the state government (that's a very simplistic definition but this is a very silly game so i'm not getting into it) virginia is supposed to value democracy (their ideals) above all else. also richmond is a v cool town.
Neville: Nebraska. quiet and unassuming, minds his own business but sticks to his principles when it matters. hard working, and agriculture based, seems pretty boring until you get to know him and realize all that boring is actually *really* admirable.
Pansy: Illinois. the glitz and glam and cool factor of chicago is fun, but it's also a little morally bankrupt (lol). She's learning to appreciate the quiet, more steady parts of her.
Luna: I went back and forth on this one for a while, but i think you are right. i have to go with Oregon. Keep Portland Weird and all that. she definitely brings the special brownies to the potluck.
Theo: Montana. quiet and bit of a leave me the fuck alone attitude. appreciates solitary walks through the mountains. likes animals more than people. so sick of the grind. let him lay in a field of wildflowers and think about the universe for a few days.
i think the weasleys as a whole would be Iowa. hardworking, rural, they have enough money to get by, they're willing to try new things (like wind energy), they always try to stand up for what is right, but at the same time they value their tight knit communities.
and since i've now spent a full hour on this, i'm calling it done LOL

Chuck Tingle said some very important stuff today. About being asked to take his mask off, which he wears not only for reasons of chronic pain but for his safety as an LGBTQ activist. It's a really good read and I encourage anyone with the time to sit down and read it.
It got me thinking about my current fixation because there's a very interesting parallel to be made, I hope, between the real and upsetting situation Chuck experienced and the way a certain segment of the Baldur's Gate 3 fandom treats t he Emperor...and its desire to wear a mask.
I hope it doesn't come across that I'm saying "oh these situations are the same!!" They really are not. One is a real person facing what sure looks an awful lot like discrimination and the other is a fictional character. But I value fiction highly for its role as a safe playground where we can interact with hurtful things without real people being hurt.
In a quick and dirty summary that does no true justice to Chuck's eloquence, he was invited to the Texas Library Association annual conference, then told he would need to remove his mask (which he wears not only to protect his identity but because, as an autistic person, masking causes him serious stress and chronic pain), and when his agent rightfully told them he would not remove his disability aid, he was disinvited. It's not only ableist but very rude to offer him a place, have him keep his schedule clear, and then change their minds. A small amount of research would have shown them he does not remove it in public appearances.
What the hell does that have to do with the Emperor? We first meet the Emperor in a guise it crafts to interface and work with the player character. A persona; a mask. Wearing this mask makes it comfortable, it makes it feel safe. It has every reason to fear violence directed at its person if the player becomes aware of who and what it is.
And, during the time while it wears this guise, it does not lead the player on, or make advances. (If your instinct is to say "oh but the robe it wears--don't. That's one step away from blaming sexual assault victims for wearing revealing clothing. Wearing showy clothing is NOT an invitation.) The option to give it a hug comes only after a perception check--it's trying to hide how weary and exhausted it is. It must be initiated by the player.
When its disguise is ripped away from it by circumstance, it is afraid. It is stressed out, uncertain what the player will do. It is forced to make all these explanations and justifications--exactly what it was trying to avoid in the first place. I firmly believe that, if the player had not had to enter the Astral Prism to save it (and themself) it would have kept its disguise up through the whole adventure, kept an emotional distance from the player character, and parted without ever removing its disguise. It sees you as comrades of chance, not bosom companions. Coworkers, essentially.
I had an illuminating conversation on Twitter about this, in fact. People have grown accustomed to invading other people's privacy, to seeing personal details of their life. They feel entitled to it. I think a decade or two of people sharing every minutia and photograph has led people to assume that those who don't share everything have something to hide.
But some people are just private. Some people find being in public situations intensely stressful. (I sure do! The mere thought of becoming famous stresses me out.) Yet these people will throw a fit if you don't share things that are none of their business. Will kick you out of events, or shut you out of jobs. These people would be upset at an LGBTQIA+ coworker not revealing "what they are" to them...even though it's none of their business. It's private. Yet they feel entitled to this information, and deceived if it's withheld.

I truly think that's what it comes down to. People want to know every detail of other people's lives because it's become normalized, yes, but also because they feel entitled to know if they're working with "one of those people." In a way, it's almost a good thing. More and more people feel safe enough to share their sexuality or gender identity. More and more people feel safe enough to explore whereas before they might never have let themselves question who they were. But it does have its downsides, and one of those is in the form of entitlement of others to know personal details of our lives.
I've seen a lot of weirdly vitriolic hate toward the Emperor. Like, the kind of murderous hate seen when the worst type of person is ""catfished."" And I'm sure that's a part of it; people making what they think will be the perfect character (dare I say it...woman?) to seduce, and then finding out it's an illithid. But the Emperor doesn't create this mask to seduce, only to survive. To get through this terrible situation without the party turning on or abandoning it. It's worth stepping back when you have this reaction to a character and considering why. Analyzing what assumptions you made, and what might have moved you to make them. This is the purpose of fiction. To get to know ourselves, and to see through the eyes of others.
And to write lots and lots of smut, of course. I think Chuck Tingle would agree with me there.
Read critically, friends. Fiction is supposed to make us feel, and sometimes it will make us feel uncomfortable. It's not a "bad thing" to be immediately rejected. Sometimes that's growth knocking on the door. Let it in. Ask yourself some uncomfortable questions. I promise, it's worth it at the end of the journey.

grew up just south of LA, was fairly economically privileged and in the upper class
lived with his mother and half-siblings south of LA when the outbreak happened
the neighborhood they resided in was upper-class and well-fortified and received messages akin to bomb threats from survival groups and it eventually happened, forcing all the residents to evacuate
matthew stayed with his family and a few neighbors and were out on the road for several weeks at a time before seeking refuge at a now-abandoned college in new mexico (on the way his sister was bit trying to protect him and ultimately succumbed to her injuries and the infection)
while at the college, a flu outbreak claimed the life of his youngest half-brother zach and he ended up biting his father as he slept
the group got into squabbles with another nearby group several times for ownership of the university, and they were eventually driven out after an accomplice from the enemy side pretending to be an ally to matthew’s group plotted to attack the place with the group’s leader behind everyone’s back
his mother passed only days after they were driven away from her injuries, leaving him alone with brian
after being ambushed by an enemy group in north texas, brian was kidnapped and taken to tennessee. thanks to matthew’s tracking skills, he managed to notice a pattern in some of the license plates on the cars that came from tennessee, reading SCION84
once he arrived at the prison where brian was being held captive, he attempted to rescue his brother, offering to give away his mother’s backpack of supplies in a one-on-one meeting with the leader of the group living in the correctional facility. brian attempted to protect it, but ended up getting shot in the process in front of matthew, and in a fit of rage, he shot down the leader of the facility, prompting an assault from the guards overlooking their meeting. matthew was forced to abandon his brother’s body, but still ended up getting shot in the shoulder in the process
he traveled on foot for days, not feeling up to driving cars (or looking for gas if the tanks were empty), and after he collapsed from pain and exhaustion, he woke up from his coma to find none other than the doctor of the kingdom taking care of him. he later finds out that he ended up as far east as west virginia in his attempt to escape tennessee, and a scouting patrol found him and took him in
as he heals, he learns to fight for the kingdom, urging the king to fight alongside alexandria, hilltop, and the rebels against the saviors, and deciding to move to alexandria to protect it and its walls due to the casualties they especially faced during the savior war
his story essentially describes that sudden and unprepared transition from having a lot of privilege and resources to having basically none and learning to adapt and cope with those extreme changes, as well as learning to value his own life and the lives of people he loves over material possessions

The Pentagon granted Lockheed Martin a contract valued at $151.4 million for the production of the eight F-16 Block 70 fighters in Bulgaria.
The work will be carried out in Fort Worth, Texas; and Greenville, South Carolina, scheduled for completion on September 30, 2027.
In 2019, Bulgaria started an order for eight units of this hunting model and promptly made a 100% advance payment. Moving forward to 2022, the Bulgarian Parliament gave the green light to the acquisition of eight additional fighters, thus increasing the total acquisition to 16 F-16 fighter jets.
Industry experts predict that it will be a decade-long process for Bulgaria to gradually take possession of all these aircraft.
These brand new F-16s are prepared to replace 11 old Soviet MiG-29UB. The initial Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 fighter, adapted to the needs of Bulgaria, is expected to leave the production line and arrive in the country in 2025.
