@shinyearthquakereview submitted: Found hundreds of these wasps having a mating flight in my front yard. I believe they are Scolia dubia. It was so cool seeing all of them zooming around right above the grass.
Look at them fluttering about! I hope they all successfully enticed a partner.

The Beautiful Scoliid Wasps are a Good Reminder of Nature’s Interconnectedness shows several photos of these pretty wasps. It explains why the author/artist is so fond of them, and why they’re important in the balance of nature.
Another Hungry Wasp
I have always been captivated by the exquisite beauty of scoliid wasps, including this one that was one of the many pollinators that I encountered in the tamarisk on my last hike. These fascinating creatures possess a unique charm that I cannot help but admire. With their slender bodies, vibrant colors, and fuzzy bodies, scoliid wasps are truly a sight to behold. Have you…
S/o to the one house in my neighborhood that sits at the only sidewalk that leads outside of the development for having just a million fucking wasps swarming their entire yard so no one can walk past
The four-spotted scoliid (Pygodasis quadrimaculata) is a large wasp found in scrubland and other open, sandy habitats in the southeast US. Scoliids are solitary hunters that rummage on the ground in search of scarab beetle grubs, which they will pursue by burrowing below ground, paralyze, and lay an egg on. Like most solitary wasps, they have no interest in humans and will not sting unless handled roughly.
In the habitats where I’ve seen P. quadrimaculata in Florida, ox beetles (Strategus antaeus) are by far the most common scarabs with grubs big enough to serve as a host for a wasp of this size, so I assume that’s their main prey.
Hello! ive been fascinated by your blog since your cicada posts were recommended to me. i was especially interested in the pictures of the giant cicada killing wasps. they look very much like an insect i saw a long time ago in northern utah, crawling through the grass in my backyard. id never seen anything like it before or since. having a phobia of wasps, i was terrified. I dont know why it would be there, since we definitely didnt have giant cicadas where i lived. it was large, and black bodied with yellow patterns. i wanted to know your thoughts on this.
if it was a Sphecius, it was probably this species. iNaturalist has a few records of it in northern Utah.
scoliid wasps aren’t super closely related but do resemble cicada killers, this one is quite common in the area:
Not only Wasp Wednesday, but also Thread Waist Thursday, Fairyfly Friday, Scoliid Saturday, Scelionid Sunday, Mutillid Monday, and Tiphiid Tuesday as well
Random bug post again, the harvest was bountiful this weekend
4 wasps found (one not pictured): 2 metric paper wasps (I think), common paper wasp, and this blue winged scoliid wasp
One of the metrics had a collapsed abdomen and while extending it I got to see its stinger which was interesting, the scoliid also has its stinger out. I don’t really have much to say other than I really like them since they’re the first wasps their size in my collection. If it isn’t obvious, they were all finicky when pinning as seen with the metrics; I tried to get a resting and flying pose which was difficult mainly with the legs insisting they stay curled. The mid-flight metric’s front legs were also trapped in it’s jaws.
And of course we can’t forget the bonus picture: (horse fly, idk if it has any special name and I’m a bit too tired to go researching)
Found this monster while looking for thinner tweezers to use on the wasps and I am so, so happy that it’s not missing any limbs either. It’s incredibly light which makes me think it’s been out there for a long time and idk how well it’ll relax in the relaxing jar…
