I have been looking for this for YEARS. My at least 13 year old (judging by Scrapbook.com’s posting in 2011) twilight knockoff cardstock stack. Finally found in the back of a closet in my mom’s house. SUCH good themes and colors. Wish I had gotten the smaller version back in the day since the smaller patterns work better for my reading journal but oh well.

TOPIC: Utilize readings to discuss why maternal and child health is important to society. Then analyze how this has implications for Occupational Therapy practice, particularly at a community level, and life within the context you are working in.

A mother is a person that gives life to a child. They are the first to hear the child in their stomach, feel their first kicks and go through a series of emotions all because of the human growing inside of them. The presence of a mother is pivotal as it contributes to how their child develops from when they are in the mother’s uterus until they grow older. (Medical, 2020)

In my experience, my mother means everything to me. Whenever an altercation or anything I don’t know how to tackle arises, the first person I call is my mother. Therefore I can say from first hand experience that a mother child relationship is very important. There has also been scientific evidence that suggests that the bond between a mother and a child is so strong a child is able to feel when their mother is not well, stressed angry or upset. (Puglisi, 2017). Therefore it is very important to deal with the client and mothers healthy simultaneously if needed.

In essence, the child’s health is just as important as the mother’s health especially in occupational therapy. For example, if the mother is suffering mentally and has depression for example, it is very hard for the mother to be mentally tuned in into sessions. They could possibly be experiencing symptoms such as having difficulty in sleeping, which would result in them being grumpy all the time. Possibly have frequent headaches, which can easily alter their mood, physical body pains and a noticeable change in the client’s weight. (Bhandari, 2020). This would make it very hard for the mother to even want to be present during sessions, participate, or even take care of a baby when they are struggling to take care of themselves. This is where this becomes a huge problem in Occupational therapy as we tend to use mothers in sessions with children that need OT. When kids are sick, usually they are very clingy to their mother or guardian and rate their opinion at high regard and usually listen better if their mother says they should do something compared to me, someone they may be seeing for the first time. Therefore advocating for maternal and child health is important in society as sometimes the mother does not know their importance in the children’s life.

How do we advocate for this you may ask? We do this by education on the mother’s impact is important as it may change the mothers perspective on how they view themselves in the child life and their impact on the life as well as how they may see things as little things they say or do for the child, go such a long way for that child. This is important in the context of the community as because of the nature of a community, people are always speaking or talking to each other and share information effortlessly. Therefore sharing this type of information amongst mothers of different ages can be very beneficial as it lets the clients and the mothers engage in a topic they all are part of as they are mothers.

A second way to do this is physically show the importance of the mother during a physicals session as usually people believe through seeing. Children tend to look for validation or general communication with their mother with the smallest things, as they are unfamiliar of new people or new places. Involve the mother and then remove her to maybe show the different in reactions of their child with and without them in the room during treatment.
