Musicman (jp) interview with Sean Miyashiro (CEO 88rising)
[16.9.2022]
Tumblr media
-The next question is about the new school leaders. They are the first Japan-based artists signed by 88rising. What was it about them that attracted you?
Sean: When I first saw them, I thought they were crazy. There's something very eye-catching about performance, but it doesn't seem like anyone is telling you how to perform. Everything is a natural performance that comes out from the bottom of their hearts. So I really want to support them. I think they have the potential to become one of the biggest groups in the world. But to do that, everyone needs to work hard. Like BABYMETAL, the songs and shows have to be really great, and the fans, the management team, and the artists themselves have to work together to make that dream come true. New school leaders deserve more attention. We want to give them the opportunity to make their dreams come true.

I have very mixed feelings about 88rising. I used to like them before they became so “fake” and started to get such a massive ego, when they posted stuff that felt like they really valued their artists and cared about their message. But now it just feels like they are so immature and everything they do from the “get this to 50,000 likes and we’ll release this song”, all the artists on midsummer madness posting about it daily until it released, and everything in between. It all feels like they forgot their goal and they are rapidly losing their supporters because of these decisions and changes.

Working in close collaboration with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, 88rising executive produced the historic music project, showing the next generation of Asian artists from around the world.  88rising used the film’s setting of San Francisco to tell a deeper story about the Asian-American experience — from what life is like at home, to getting into mischief, to falling in love for the first time. Just like the film itself, the album is anchored by the universal theme of family — exploring the relationships between our past generations, present, and future.

Interview with Natalie.mu [Jan 17,2022]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember AG! was trending on JP twitter the day this came out. This interview was trending 🥺. (+ Aa music performance on tv)
Part 1
SOME EXCERPTS
──I knew about the high performance of the leaders of the new school, but when you announced the contract with 88rising in November 2020, I was really surprised.
MIZYU: The story started in February 2020, and I met 88rising people online and shot the music video of the world debut song "NAINAINAI" in the summer.
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──The contract was triggered by the arrival of the performance video of "Koi Geba" (written by Temma Matsunaga and composed by H ZETT M, released in 2019) at 88rising.
MIZYU: Yes, that was taken at the end of January 2020, and the one who took it had a connection with 88rising.
SUZUKA: Please send the video to 88rising. That person will come to the two-man live "Men and Women Ratio One-to-Four" (held in February 2020) with Soshi Sakiyama, and at that time, said "I will take you overseas". When we heard that, we laughed with surprise, "Is it true ...! Eh!", And when asked "Can you speak English?" I was talking in English.
KANON: The video that triggered wasn't taken for the purpose of making an overseas debut, but when I worked on it I said "I'll do my best because it may lead to something from here", it led to an unexpected place.
SUZUKA: As the range of activities expanded, we had the feeling that "I can do something ...?" but! There was more talk than I had imagined, so I said "Wow ...!". I was impressed.
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──Did you have an image of overseas activities?
SUZUKA: Until now, I was researching how to cut into the Japanese music industry! However, the decision to make an overseas debut made me think, "I want to grow even more!
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──Did you originally know about 88rising?
EVERYONE: I didn't know
MIZYU: It was a feeling that the world expanded really suddenly. However, before that, there were opportunities to be seen by foreigners at TikTok, etc., and there may have been a part where I began to be conscious of "we want to be an artist who symbolizes Japan." That's why I came to call myself "Youth Japan National Team".
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──Of course, you also met Sean Miyashiro, the representative of 88rising.
MIZYU: At first, I met him through the online screen, but when I thought that Sean was in a place like a skyscraper, he suddenly moved and a dog came out, and I felt something different. When I watched the video of the program we interviewed, Sean in a fur coat also appeared. He had a great sense of a president, and I thought it was artistic and American, but when I first met him in person, he wore shorts and sandals, and it was very human and friendly
SUZUKA: His laughter was unique! Like "Awoo! Ah"
MIZYU: It was innocent and lovely (laughs)
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──88rising has a strong image of hip-hop, and it was often talked about who would be the contract for Japanese rappers, but since the contract for the leaders of the new school was announced, among hip-hop fans the shock was spreading in the meantime.
RIN: It is a very challenging place, but once I set foot there, I wanted to take on more challenges. Every time we release a song with a strong beat like "NAINAINAI" on 88rising or find a new side of ourselves, we are excited. Besides, I want to make 88rising more interesting from our own angle.
SUZUKA: When I look at 88rising's YouTube channel, I think, "We just have a different atmosphere ...?", But I was very happy to hear a lot of surprisingly good reactions. I was impressed again by saying, "Our style is wrong, NAINAINAI!"
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
── Sean Miyashiro said in a past interview about the kind of artist you want to sign up for, "it needs to be different from existing artists," so I think it's correct.
MIZYU: Sean said, "I'm trying various songs, but I don't want to change the roots of the four people, I want to make the most of the wonderfulness of the four people." When the contract was decided, I was worried that "I wonder if I will sing only English from now on" or "I think it will change a lot", so "You guys can stay as you are!" I was very relieved by Sean's words. I was very happy to hear that you trusted us and made a contract. A person who expands our potential and gives us an opportunity to reach the world.
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──What did Sean particularly appreciate about the Leaders?
SUZUKA: After all it is the dance. Seeing the performance of "Koi Geba", which is fierce in our songs, it seems that he thought "Wow!" To the energy, and "I love" the video of "the night before the test"(Shiken Zenya).
RIN: He was enjoying the energy.
SUZUKA: I want to show more and more, not just energy.
♪¸¸.•*¨*•.
──How did you decide on your overseas name, "ATARASHII GAKKO!"?
SUZUKA: If the leaders of the new school were made into the alphabet as they were, it would be "ATARASHII GAKKO NO LEADERS", but I thought that "NO" would mean YES / NO. NO wasn't good, so I got a candidate for a completely different name, but when I looked up the group online, I wanted to connect with my activities so far. Then it became "ATARASHII GAKKO!"!
MIZYU: The exclamation mark was Sean's suggestion.
KANON: In overseas, we are abbreviated as "AG!", which is also cute. The result was very good.

broo i feel so bad for joji :'( he looks so out of it, idk how this label is actually treating him but it seems like its pretty badly
I know he loves Sean Miyashiro with all his heart, and that’s probably the cause he wants to please him on everything. And because of this, probably Sean tightens his grip on him with time, asking him to do stuff he doesn’t want or doesn’t feel comfortable. I have the feeling he’s not really happy with stopping being the producer of his own songs. He has told he feels more like a producer than a singer. But lately, there’s more and more of “his songs” he didn’t produce at all and didn’t even write on their enterity. Like Sanctuary and Run. On Ballads 1 most of the songs he didn’t produce were produced by his friends and little artists he loved. But the later songs have producers with more experience and even bangers out there, like Run, it was produced by the same guy who produced video games. I’m just guessing, don’t quote me on that. Maybe those producers are really his frieds *shrugs*, but it’s just the feeling I get. DAMN I got way too inspired on that one!

GET FAMILIAR: Weeks of August 5 and August 12, 2019
Tumblr media
COMING SOON: half●alive
Release Title: Now, Not Yet (LP)
Release Date: Friday, August 9, 2019
What To Expect: Using their uplifting, quirky electronic music and a must-watch viral video for their song “still feel.”, Los Angeles-based trio half●alive have suddenly found themselves on the brink of superstardom in only a year’s time. Josh Taylor, the former frontman of Long Beach band The Moderates, left his old outfit to form half●alive along with drummer Brett Kramer in 2017, later adding bassist J Tyler Johnson to round out the group. Since the release of “still feel.” in August 2018, the band has experienced a whirlwind of success, racking up millions upon millions of views on Youtube and nearly selling out a 12-date US tour in early 2019. The band has already put out a few EPs and singles, but they are preparing to release their first full-length studio project this Friday with Now, Not Yet.
The album’s tracklist features a few songs that fans will already be familiar with in “arrow” and “RUNAWAY” as well as their aforementioned viral hit, but the band has previously shown the ability to incorporate funk, pop, and rock elements into all of their records so there’s no telling what the rest of Now, Not Yet will sound like. The latest offering from the band before the album’s drop is “ok ok?” which sees the group slowing things down a bit while adding in a couple of psychedelic harmonies and some good ol’ fashioned electric guitar riffs for good measure. The group has been excitingly innovative when it comes to how they present themselves and their music, and with Taylor at the helm, it seems like almost anything is possible for these three dreamers.

LOCAL LEGENDS: IDK
Release Title: ISHEREAL (LP)
Release Date: TBD (August)
What To Expect: PG County’s own IDK has masterminded quite the album release campaign for his upcoming project ISHEREAL, scheduled to drop sometime this month. Starting at the end of 2018, the rapper began posting percentages to his Instagram stories, Twitter feed, and in Facebook posts and claiming that they were in relation to the status of ISHEREAL. Each time the number seemed to inch closer and closer to 100%, but there was no discernable pattern for months and months. Finally on May 19, he tweeted, “HELLO FOLKS. FIRST SONG FROM ISHEREAL DROPS ON MY BIRTHDAY. TELL A FRIEND,” and, just like that, the real fun began.
Just a few days later, IDK unleashed “Digital,” a biting, abrasive track, unto the world. “Digital” sees the young spitter reflectively delivering bars about his past and how it led him to this point in his career. IDK has always had a penchant for storytelling, and the song doesn’t shy away from getting into the gritty details of his upbringing and the environments he grew up in. Fans, who were already excited by the single, were even more pleasantly surprised when he took to social media again on June 18 to hint at even more big news. The next day, Forbes published the exclusive premier of his new venture, an independent label associated with Warner Music that he would be heading up called CLUE. It was a massive announcement for an artist who has lived in relative obscurity outside the DMV to this point, but IDK wasn’t done making waves just yet.
On July 8, he filled his fans in on a digital scavenger hunt that would reveal a secret message about the project. Within hours, there were hordes  of fans attempting to crack the code, which ended up reading “ALBUM NEXT MONTH, SINGLE THIS MONTH.” The final step in the rollout was the release of the single “24,” which premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats1Radio station. “24” follows the short and sweet model of “Digital,” and sees IDK using a boom bap flow and ominous production to create a captivating and slightly disturbing listening experience. ISHEREAL is due this month with many speculating that it will drop sometime over the next two weeks. All I know is that if IDK put this much thought into the rollout, I absolutely cannot wait to see what he has in store for us with this album. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for what could easily be the project of the year.

WILD CARD: AUGUST 08
Release Title: Happy Endings EP (EP)
Release Date: Thursday, August 8, 2019
What To Expect: 88RISING is the mass media company at the forefront of bridging Asian culture with hip-hop and modern music. It’s the brainchild of industry vet Sean Miyashiro, who described it as a “hybrid management, record label, video production and marketing company” to Highsnobiety just last week. Featuring a roster full of heavy-hitters such as Rich Brian, Joji and the Higher Brothers, 88RISING has established itself as a group that will turn heads for years to come with their combination of talented artists and business minds. They’ve even curated their own music festival called “Head In The Clouds,” which will have its second run this fall, and while it’s easy to point to Miyashiro’s steady leadership as the driving force behind their commercial success, it’s a little harder to pinpoint why their music resonates with so many fans across the globe. Enter AUGUST 08, the group’s most elusive and seemingly out-of-place member; that is until you hear him sing.
“AUGUST 08 is the pillar of the creative family that is 88RISING. As a songwriter, he’s 88RISING’s secret weapon when it comes to creating hits for Joji, Rich Brian, NIKI, and many more,” said Ones To Watch in mid-2018, going on to say that, “[h]e is the glue to this family that represents music’s ascendant globalism.” The LA-native started out his career under his birth name August Grant according to his Apple Music profile, landing a feature on DJ Khaled’s summer smash “I’m The One” before landing on Rich Brian’s 2018 track “Amen” and subsequently releasing his debut single “Funeral” as AUGUST 08 through 88RISING. Joining the 88RISING team helped kickstart his career, and he’s been steadily racking up co-signs from some of the industry’s biggest names ever since.
Earlier this year he released the club-rap banger “Simple Pleasures,” which recently scored a remix from DC’s GoldLink in July. It’s a funky, afro-futuristic track that shows an exciting new direction for the young R&B singer. He announced that he would be releasing a project titled Happy Endings EP that is appropriately set to drop this Thursday, August 8. If the EP follows the precedent of “Simple Pleasures,” then we’re in for a high-energy, electro-influenced project that is sure to be the perfect backdrop for a night on the town. That said, things are never how they appear on the surface with the 88RISING crew, so it seems like we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out exactly what AUGUST 08 has up his sleeve. Check him out, and make sure to follow the rest of the 88RISING crew as they continue to work their way to the top of the music charts.
