So I’ve finally hooked up my #EvercadeVS. Previously I’ve been playing Evercade carts on the Handheld Evercade which I recently sold in favour of the Evercade VS. The VS hooks up to the your TV which I have found more enjoyable than the handheld. I’ve played a lot of the Sega Master System port of R-Type (which is great) but the true Arcade game is just brilliant… and a little difficult but not insane. So far I can get to stage 3 on 1 credit and I’m loving it. Next up was Tanglewood (originally for the Sega Genesis). I’ve beaten Tanglewood on the Evercade handheld and it was a great experience and ported very well. So I was surprised to find that my same Tangewood Evercade cart on the VS is not a perfectly smooth experience. There was noticeable choppiness while running. This is not input lag but what feels like a low frame rate. And while the game is still very playable it’s a shame it’s not the same smooth experience as on the Genesis/MD. And for a pure nostalgia trip I played the C64 Mission Impossible and Jump Man. To my surprise Jump Man is still a very fun game. And Mission Impossible is still damn near impossible. Despite some bumps I am really enjoying the Evercade VS. Anyone else have one? This is the 2022 Columbus Circle 30th Anniversary Edition of Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer for the Japanese Sega Mega Drive. This edition is slightly changed from Columbus Circle’s Glay Lancer release from 2019. I believe this 2nd re-release happened because of demand for this excellent Mega Drive exclusive shooter. This 30th Edition version received some improvements from the previous 2019 edition. This time around the cartridge has beveled edges and the game manual and cart label have improved quality. Even for this 30th edition I find the manual to be a little soft and in places the print is a little dark. The cart, cart label and cover sleeve are excellent. Over all this is a very good product. But it does fall noticeably short of the quality we’re getting from the recent @retrobitgaming re-releases. Retrobit’s Gaiares and TOAPLAN collection are just perfect. I purchased my Glaylancer 30th Ed. from ebay for $85 USD which included $5 USD shipping. When it arrived I got hit with $15 USD duty. @retrobitgaming is doing their own release of Gley Lancer and pre-orders are open now. It’s common these days to see ports and remakes of popular video games. Like ‘The Last of Us Part 1’getting some treatment to take advantage of the Playstation 5. At the time I never noticed but this also happened in the 8bit and 16bit era. Super Mario All-Stars is a good example of NES games getting ported and upgraded for the Super Nintendo. This Super Mario All-Stars was one of the first SNES CIB games I picked-up; which was just a few years ago. I’ve heard the physic’s are a little different from the originals. Has anyone noticed? Fortunately Super Star Wars, Empire and Return are not expensive games for the SNES. At the moment Super Empire Strikes Back is the only one I have in this trilogy. But I’m sure the other two won’t be too far behind. I haven’t played them since I was a kid and I’m wondering if they will be as hard as I remember them being. I picked this one up from @retro.game.bros and I think it cost me about $60 CAD (~$47 USD). These are a bunch of my cleanest SNES games. For a while I was using custom cases but after making the switch I found I’m really enjoying them a lot more. Because I only want complete (CIB) games my SNES collection will stay relatively small. Got myself a very nice boxed Sega Master System II. It’s not often that I see them complete. Several years before COVID I saw one selling for $300 CAD (~$233 USD) at a Game Swap. Then and now I wasn’t interested at such a high price. Early this year I found this one on my local Classified (Kijiji) and I paid $120 CAD (~$93 USD). And this felt like a reasonable price. The seller told me he clears out abandoned storage units and he often finds all sorts of odds and ends. I did plug it in to test it and nothing displays on my CRT TV. Also no sound. It looks like it’s original region was Germany and the black colour of the console tells me it is a PAL region unit. I won’t be able to truly test it unless I get access to a PAL CRT or a PVM that supports both formats. I have a very large Sega Master System collection. Any notable games I’m missing are pretty expensive; games like Masters of Combat and Power Strike II. Which is why I can’t even remember the last time I added an original Master System game to the collection before yesterday’s chance find. So, it’s not an exciting game but my new Sega Chess is in amazing condition and it was very cheap at $12.99 CAD (~$9.75 USD). What made this purchase extra fun was that it felt like time traveling back to when this hobby was super affordable! At the same time as I was buying Sega Chess my close friend @evilkalman was buying Pro Wrestling for the Master System that he found by chance out in the wild. So games are still out there and the hunt can still bear fruit! Sega Chess is the 238th Master System game added to my collection. So I’m pretty sure now that I am collecting the small set of Japanese Sega Ages 2500 games for the Playstation 2. My two newest games from this series of are Dragon Force (Vol. 18) and Alien Syndrome (Vol. 14). Putting me at a total of 16 of 33 Sega Ages 2500 titles. All in this order cost me $120 CAD (~$90 USD) with taxes and shipping. At these prices I’m going to take it slow and easy. At release (starting from 2003) they were budget games selling for 2500 Yen (~$20-$25 USD) each. I don’t want to break the bank and I don’t mind if I never get them all. I suspect there will be a significant language barrier with Dragon Force but check out that cover art! Craving Metroid for your Sega Genesis or Mega Drive? Meet Life on Mars. Life on Mars -Genesis- has an Aliens Colonial Marines mood to it; which works very well. The game lands very firmly into the Metroidvania genre. The graphics are very good. Not Metroid good but they hold their own. Running, jumping and combat all feel very good. I haven’t played for long but I’ve already been treated to a bunch of unique environments and a Mini Boss. My first death came in the form of a flock of Mutant Chickens. My early impression of Life on Mars is very positive and I’m eager for more. The physical package is very good. What does stand out is that the manual is not as wide as original Genesis game manuals. Odd. And if I were to nit-pick I’d say the title is a bit subdued and doesn’t pop; while the cover art is amazing. Living in Canada it was a bit of a challenge to pick-up the Sega Genesis Mini 2. It sold on Amazon.com and would not ship to Canada. What’s with that?! Fortunately for me my Sister lives in the US and I was able to order and have it shipped to her. It took a while to get my hands on it because my Sister highjacked my Sega Genesis Mini 2 so that she could ‘gift’ it to me for Christmas 🎄 That’s a sign of a good healthy sibling relationship 🤗 And I’m very happy for it! And now for something a little bit different. Who here is excited by #Evercade? I am, and thank you to my lovely Asawa for this super fun Christmas gift. For a time I was collecting every Evercade cartridge but this very unique console is on fire and releases are coming out at an intense pace. Even at a very affordable $20 USD per cartridge/collection I recently sold a bunch of carts to focus on releases that really pack a punch for my personal gaming taste. These two cartridges pictured include some amazing Arcade classics. The highlights for me include R-Type, In the Hunt, Truxton, Zero Wing and Snow Bros. I’ve played Sega’s console ports for all of these games except In the Hunt which is a gorgeous looking submarine shooter made by very talented people from the Metal Slug series. Did anyone here ever discover In the Hunt in the Arcades when it was new.
