Careers and Employability - Freelance Working
In this session, our lecturer invited in 2 workers from the Careers and Employability Service at the university they spent time discussing with us our options after University and laying out a plan for what steps we should be taking over the next 3 years to get there.
Some of the advice we were given was that it’s good to have more than 3 different job ideas because as a Musician we’ll most likely have a Portfolio Career which means that we’ll most likely take on multiple jobs at one time to provide an income for our main works. Another thing that they referred to is having a T shaped career which means that along with having your main skillset (Your Musical Talent), you also need to have adaptable skills that you can apply to other jobs to fill out your Portfolio and to make you more employable.
Something that the University is offering is an Opportunity Fund to help fund projects that you’re thinking to run so if I have any important projects I would like to be funding it would be smart to apply for that.
We were also informed to look at a few websites when it comes to looking for work experience to help us out with getting a better job after University:
- LinkedIn
- Lincoln Connect
- UMusic
- UoL Careers
Some extra advice we were given that is specific to Freelance working is that the Midlands is the best place to be when becoming a Freelancer as it is the freelance hotspot of the UK. The most important advice we were given was to say Yes to every single job offer you’re given as everything may lead to another job and to get Terms and Conditions written in a signed contract for every single project that you do to make sure that you get paid the settled for amount as that is your only form of income most of the time. As a Freelancer you must also remember that once you start earning over £1000 you have to register with HMRC as Self-Employed.

Guitar Tuition
This week in my Guitar Lesson we started to discuss more on my solo recital for A Performer Prepares at the end of the year. I found out that it will end up being 20 minutes long and needs to have a theme that ties it all together. My guitar tutor suggests that I play Alice as one of my songs as that is his favourite out of the ones that I played for him. From this session, I’ve figured out I need to start timing my original pieces to find a few that fit the time and are suitable for the event.

"Google teams up with news publishers on a new product"
In late June, we launched a licensing program to pay for quality content from publishers for an upcoming news experience. The goal of this project is to create something that gives readers more context and journalistic perspective on news stories as well as helps publishers’ distinct editorial voices shine through. Today, we wanted to update you on how we're working alongside our publisher partners to achieve this.
This licensing program and upcoming product both build on our broader commitment to support the news industry in its drive towards a more sustainable future. And as we expand licensing to more publishers in more countries, we’re also working closely with 10 different news outlets from Germany and Brazil on an early access program,  testing features and gathering feedback to shape the product direction ahead of full launch later this year. Publishers taking part in this early access program including international brands as well as local household staples like ZEIT ONLINE, Der Spiegel, Tagesspiegel, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Ippen Media Group  and Rheinische Post in Germany and Estado de Minas,  A Gazeta, Correio Braziliense and UOL in Brazil. These partners are helping us test features and gather feedback ahead of a full launch later this year.
At Google, we know the best products are built when a diversity of knowledge, insight and expertise are brought into the mix, and this early access program is a major phase in our progress. Participating publishers are testing publisher tools, evaluating technical integrations and ensuring different templates enhance the ways they bring stories to their readers.  We’re also discussing paywall integrations, where Google would pay for free access to allow readers to read articles on a publisher’s site. This will help paywalled publishers grow their audience and deepen their relationship with readers.
But the success of this product will rest on how good the experience is for readers, so bringing in experts from the news industry to understand their insights and hear their feedback is critical. That’s particularly appealing for Sebastian Horn, Deputy Editor of ZEIT ONLINE, one of Germany’s leading publishers and one of our partners. "Collaborating with Google on this new project allows us to bring the best of ZEIT ONLINE’s journalism to new audiences across Google's products and to do what our readers trust us to do best–provide them with the most relevant news and the best in-depth analysis on current topics.“
We also want to make sure readers know who is behind the news and find publications they respect. That’s why we’re making sure this  product strongly reflects the publishers’ brand, while still creating a cohesive news experience.
“This new collaboration opportunity adds further value to the essence of our mission, which is to forge a very close bond with our community through quality journalism and a first rate product experience,” says Aglisson Lopes, the Performance Editor forA Gazeta, one of Brazil's leading local and regional publications. “We are a regional publisher that strives to be at the leading edge of digital trends and our continuing work with Google leads the way in getting us closer to this goal."
Google has long been invested in supporting news businesses and we believe the work we do through the Google News Initiative alongside the traffic from News and Search–24 billion visits a month–are hugely valuable. Our licensing program also plays a major role, and we will be announcing new partners in additional countries in the coming weeks.
As we get closer to a public launch, we’re especially grateful to these initial partners for working together to build a product that enables people to become more informed and provides additional financial support for news publishers.

~Watch McGregor media day to promote Mayweather fight!LIVE
Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are set to enter the ring on Saturday, August 26, at 9 p.m. ET in Las Vegas, Nevada for what's expected to be the most watched fight... ever. As usual, the fight is only available to those who pay the nearly $100 pay-per-view fee. However, breaking from the traditional means of purchasing directly from a cable or satellite provider, CBS recently announced the fight will also be available to stream on the Showtime PPV website or iOS and Apple TV app. (Disclaimer: CBS is CNET's parent company. For those who want to stream the fight on a computer, you can visit ShowtimePPV.com and purchase access for $99.95. Keep in mind, if you purchase through the website you will only have access to the fight on a computer — and not on your mobile device or Apple TV. The iOS and Apple TV apps aren't available in the iTunes store, but according to the announcement, the apps should be live any time now. We will update this post once we spot the apps. Unfortunately, there's no mention of access for users of the Android, Roku or Amazon Fire ($49.99 at Amazon.com) platforms. Right now, it seems, the mobile experience is limited to Apple devices. As an added bonus for those who pay to stream the fight, you will also have access to a free trial of Showtime and CBS All Access.
Watch Mayweather vs Mcgregor Fight Live
Brazilian fans will have a chance to watch Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor meet inside the ring on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, as the mega event will air live on pay-per-view through Combate in the country. The network announced the deal on Friday. UOL first reported the news. Mayweather fights usually air on cable channel SporTV in Brazil, except for his highly anticipated clash with Manny Pacquiao in 2015, which aired on pay-per-view on Combate. Both channels are owned by Globo. Combate airs every UFC event live in Brazil on pay-per-view, even the Fight Night and Fight Pass cards, but in a different system. For R$ 74,90 (24 dollars) a month, fans can watch every UFC card, and several other Brazilian shows. Those subscribers (more than 300,000, sources say) won’t have to pay more to watch Mayweather-McGregor. Fans also have the option to purchase a single event without subscribing to the channel, but a separate card usually costs more than the monthly subscription fee. Combate has yet to announce the separate pay-per-view price for Mayweather-McGregor.
According to a report by UOL, Combate executives expects to sell 25-30,000 pay-per-views for Mayweather-McGregor (not including their hundreds of thousands of subscribers). Mayweather-Pacquiao sold 16,500 pay-per-views in 2015, the report says.As August 26th approaches the hype train for Mayweather-McGregor continues to plow forward. Early this evening, with a scheduled start time of 5:00pm ET, Showtime Sporst will live stream Floyd Mayweather’s open media workout ahead of his scheduled fight with Conor McGregor. You can catch the stream right here on BLH. We’ve already seen a couple of glimpses of Floyd recently, and by all accounts he looks to be in tremendous shape, and today we’ll get a closer look at Floyd’s preparation for this fight. Realistically, I don’t expect this to be much different than any of Floyd’s other media workouts, his fight preparations are always pretty consistent. But Floyd did surprise us us last time out by hosting a live open sparring session instead of a typical media workout for the Berto fight. So I suppose anything is possible! Conor McGregor will host his live media workout tomorrow evening, and we’ll have live coverage of that for you as well.
