i think for a long time rhea views motherhood the same way she views wifehood. mostly that it exists aligning to what she must eventually do out of duty. it is the same way she anticipates how, sooner or later, she will have to rule in her father's stead and, given if she has any children, that her first child will rule in her stead.

there is definitely a feeling of abject..... distant ( the best way i could describe it ) between her and those titles, something like, she knows she will eventually have to perform it, but until it truly comes to her, the matter, or the eventuality of the matter, does not affect her. i feel like, in a way, this was also her way of coping with things that are beyond her control.

regardless, her marriage with da3mon clearly shattered many perspective she did have, particularly the thought that, apparently, not everyone subscribes to the ideology that you must do something or adhere to something because it is expected out of you. again, her marriage with da3mon really changed many perspective and shifted / influenced a lot of her early behaviour during her reign.

it both devastated her and strengthened her — or rather, the devastation of its failure emboldened her to have more agency in her ruling thereafter. in a way, the neglect (and maybe cruelty from the early years when they couldn't get along) from da3mon had lasting impacts, but again. that is a discussion for another time.

why it's important for me to bring that up is that, with such shattering shift of perspective, and thus rhea having had to adapt quickly to becoming more self-reliant, i do think she quickly realises that, with her husband's refusal to bed her, he in turn will never give her heir. and true, rhea could easily carry bastards, but — she is absurdly dutiful (and religious), and to risk her child in any way is out of the question.

addition — this is mainly why rhea immediately recruits her sister with the news that any child she bore will be rhea's heir. this meant that, upon marriage, her sister's husband will be the one to move into their ancestral keep and any children joy royce bore will have to carry the royce's surnames, not the husband's. it is not an easy position to put on her sister, and i could talk about this too all day, but in summary, joy agrees, and things work out.

but back on the subject, i'd like to gently nudge on the idea that, it is a very different when you do not want something, and to have it taken from you — and that encapsulated my whole meta about rhea and children. i think... as a child herself, she did not give much of an opinion on motherhood. but as a woman, she realised very early on that her choice to become a mother is expressively taken from her*, and that fills her with longing like no other.

on another hand, had da3mon and rhea did produce children, i do think rhea have different set of worries and that would have rooted deeply in how much the targaryens monopoly their children — but yes, as of present, this is my thought on the subject.

tl;dr — rhea would have loved to have her own children. but because she's been denied so, she will care for others as best as she could within her best ability - and this extends to any kin or wards her house have or is connected with.
