youtube
Realizzato in computer grafica presso ORANGE (Land of the Lustrous, Beastars), questo nuovo adattamento completo dell’iconico western sci-fi anni ‘90 è diretto da Kenji Muto (direttore d’episodio in Land of the Lustrous e in Garo: Honoo no Kokuin).
La bozza televisiva della storia è firmata da Takehiko Okishi (autore della novel Hakozoko no Elpis) e la sceneggiatura è curata da Tatsuro Inamoto, Shin Okashima e Yoshihisa Ueda.
Tumblr media

2 things that will make NaNoWriMo 2018 harder
1. The temp place found me work! Which is great because it means income => paying off debts => saving up for a house!!!
However, since it’s in the city we’re talking 2 to 3 hours of my day spent in travel time, depending on traffic. I might end up spending a few nights a week at the big sis’ since she lives nearly 30 minutes closer. That’s a lot of down time when I’ll neither be working nor writing. I suspect I’ll get a lot of podcasts listened to, but if I don’t find a good speech-to-text app I fear that my productivity is going to severely drop.
2. KARAKURI CIRCUS HAS AN ANIME!
Karakuri Circus is one of the last long-form mangas that I read before I started to drift away from the medium (I think Boku no Hero might be the only one I’m even remotely keeping up with nowadays). It has that retro Shonen feel that I adore, and the storyline is pretty intense. And when I saw it had a brand new anime adaptation? I haven’t fangirl squeed like that in years.
And what an adaptation it is! I could gush for forever about the music and the animation, and the voice work! (Especially the music! That OP? *sigh*) But I won’t. Because I should be writing. But man, if I’m not gonna carve out a half hour here and there when each new episode drops.
Yeah, AmazonPrime video is uploading episodes as they air in Japan. I don’t know if it’s simulcast or what, but they’ve only got like, 4 episodes up right now and I can’t wait for more!
I really, really hope this is gonna be a full adaptation. I’m very hopeful that it is, though. The manga’s finished plus the OP already hints at the much larger storyline that starts a few arcs in.
But yeah, another time eater for November.

*throws a dozen dress up clowns at your head* Character design!!! murder puppet apologism!!! chemicals turning frogs gay!!! its kero kero time!!!! i dont know how to type up a real bio so im just throwing tidbits fullspeed at your window and also partially me spitballing speghetti against the wall
Tumblr media
✨ their name is kero pierrot ofc, and they are a funny little frog clown married to arlequino hehe. keeping with the theme of commedia dell'arte their name is based off the character of the pierrot (and it's also a pun on keroppi since theyre my favorite sanrio character waha)
✨ the Pierrot was a tragic and lovesick figure, portrayed as naïve but endearing, often hiding their true feelings behind their jokes, and was a popular choice for romantic artists
✨ kero is a widdle bit fucked up in the brain zone but its FIIINE just slap a coat of face paint on there and ur good 8) Do not perceive the crushing mental illness behind the curtain
✨ grew up in america ofc, came to japan for reasons that turned out to be highly fallible (they maybe trust people a little too easily), refuses 2 talk abt this, they are however lacking in places to stay and money to spend so start of everything theyre Struggling A Little
✨ at this point they arent even kero really just Person...pathetic sopping wet frog you find under a rock. they had a special interest in clownery but always sort of put those kinds of thoughts to the side as more of a silly daydream than a goal they could achieve
✨ a clown without its nose have you ever seen anything so sad
✨ they first see masaru and the rest of the nakamichi circus when they saw them perform their street show (starting here), they just happened to be in the park at the time, and it's honestly the first time kero has felt happy since they Arrived in japan
✨ magic of the circus
✨ they spend the next few weeks going to the park and sorta following the nakamichi circus around to see more of their street shows, they don't really have much else to do anyway, they might as well spend some time having fun watching a circus act
✨ they attend so many that they actually start getting recognized by some of the circus members, especially masaru and shirogane since theyre very Perceptive. not a lot of details on those thoughts currently but masaru probably does his Main Protag/Therapist thing and gets to know kero
✨ BUT the way they actually join the nakamichi circus is during the performers meetup (starting here), kero goes to see their show again, but then things start Going Very Wrong and masaru's left by himself with no one to perform with. Little guy problems
✨ they've seen how much masaru and the others have been working and struggling in the past weeks, improving their street show, their cooperation with each other, and even if masaru hadn't talked to them they couldn't stand seeing something that made them so happy go down in flames like this
✨ SO! they hop in with vilma naota and mitsuushi to save the act! they don't have circus training like them so they can't do any fancy acts, but kero knows how to improv and roll with the punches, so they play off of the others as second zanni to liven up the show
✨ after that, i think they'd try to slip away quietly (kind of cant believe they did that) but masaru goes after them and asks them to join the circus!
✨ he knows that they wanted to be a clown, and even without formal training, he thinks having a western style clown will help the nakamichi circus stand out from the crowd! (also a call back to this moment in the manga when they went to see the straw circus)
✨ this is when they actually introduce themselves as Kero Pierrot to the others. there is no other name only Clown
✨ this has been a lot of masaru talk so far sorry he's my little buddy inflicted with main character disease. also i dont get a chance to meet my husband until like chapter 380 so i gotta be doin smth in the mean time
✨ from here on, kero sticks with the nakamichi circus as their new home :) they already knew a lot about clowning, but they really throw themselves into studying it as best they can (usually by spending hours at a library computer since most don't really have a textbook on clowns) and also training with the other members to sorta expand their repertoire. they get a lot better at the classic clown skills, your juggling, your balloon animals, what have you, BUT they also start to learn the cyr wheel!
✨ kero and masaru bond over doing circus training together. i give him a little noogie.
✨ they become pretty close with ryouko and lise too !! i jus love all my circus family i get them to play board games with me
✨ Peaceful Life (Until Its Not)
✨ this post as already gotten so long (and also i wanna reread some parts of the manga to refresh my mindself) so at some point i will expand on kero's feelings irt masaru running away and narumi joining nakamichi circus, but theres a couple other important points i want to make :V
✨ kero sorta takes a back seat with the rest of the nakamichi gang until they show up at kuroga village
✨ Specifically they join lise heima and ryouko in going to mont-saint-michel to follow masaru (they are NOT!!! letting these children go off on their own to fight!!!!)
💕 this is when they meet arlequino hehe 💕
✨ they stay by ryouko's side while they fucking Book It form the shirogane-o, and that's when they run into arle
💕 sorry ryouko but I'M the one who smiles at him 💕
✨ i should make a separate post of the manga panels i'm def in. and/or rewrite the scene as a fic which i might do at some point but just wait
💕 anyway this post is long enough so all you have to know is we get married and now hes my malewife Arlequino Pierrot 💕

The ringing in their ears--that was all there was at first. Harsh and shrill, so loud they could barely hear their heart pounding underneath it. Then it was was the ache, blooming all across their body and sharpened at the edges by a sting. They try to sit up, but their world having so recently been turned on its head makes their stomach lurch with the effort, and they have to stop before they tumble further down whatever grassy ditch they landed in.
Voices start to cut through the noise, and they reach for the closest as it turns familiar. Lise--right, Lise’s voice. They’d been sitting with her and the others in the back of the circus truck, when there was--something, an explosion maybe, and they’d all been sent flying. Kero had grabbed onto Lise, more out of instinct than anything. And then the pain, the ringing, the ache; at least they softened the blow for her, hopefully.
There’s another voice, too, unfamiliar, coasting over something they can’t place. Too quiet to be caught under the still pulsing ring, but the noise is sharp; a creaking, metal-on-metal tick that sets their nerves on edge--
A scream cuts through the haze, and the aches fall away as Kero’s focus comes to a narrow point. One hand closes around a clammy, trembling shoulder as the other plants in the dirt to force themselves upward. Their vision is still fuzzy, whether from smoke or concussion, and the shapes in front of them don’t make sense; massive, towering not-quite animals, twisted bodies staring through them as a predator watches prey. They shudder, nearly freezing then, but they can hear Ryouko crying again, and they force themselves forward.
“Fuck, what the fuck,” is all Kero manages as their arms wrap around the two girls in front of them. They try to pull them back, turn to shield the girls with their body, but they barely even have time to breathe before the animal-things are bounding towards them all teeth and claws, and the only thing they can do is squeeze their eyes shut and hope they aren’t screaming, too.
Something blows past them, so close they feel a sudden burn as the corner of a claw takes a chunk out of their earlobe--but it’s far less than the evisceration they’d been expecting. The realization goes through them like a shock, and just as quick, they’re pushing up onto shaky legs and pulling the girls up with them, instinct driving their body before their head can wrap around why they aren’t dead yet.
“Go, move, now!” The second all three are on their feet, Kero starts to push the girl out in front of them. They don’t know where to turn, which direction is safe, but they know they have to run and get as far away as they can. Even if part of them knows they won’t be able to outrun creatures like that--if they could even be called creatures.
“We have to stand our ground!” Lise protests, but Kero just keeps pushing, following along behind Ryouko as she sprints for a thatched house a few yards away.
“Standing our ground will get us killed, Lise!” They can feel that man--an automata, they’re sure now--glaring into their back, and it’s all they can do to keep their feet steady and not trip over their own fear.
It almost works, until they hear the pounding of claws against the dirt as the automata yells to take their heads.
That’s when the terror seizes them--and when Lise suddenly stops in her tracks.
“What are you doing?!” Kero nearly runs right into her, and has to skid to the side to avoid knocking her down, instead bumping into Ryouko as they turn on their heel. Lise doesn’t answer them; she just stands, shoulders squared, and all too calmly takes a carpetbeater hanging off the nearby clothesline.
“Kero, Ryouko. Please, just watch me.” She glances back at the two, seeming to pay no heed to the automata monsters running towards them, towards her. No trace of fear weighs her down or cracks the unshakable confidence that now radiates from her.
“I’m still a wild animal tamer.”

La regia di questo nuovo adattamento dell’iconico western sci-fi anni ‘90 è affidata a Kenji Muto (direttore d’episodio in Land of the Lustrous e in Garo: Honoo no Kokuin).

🐸 Don’t forget to stick around for the reception! The fun keeps going until tomorrow night! There’s also another special little something for all our guests, right under these roses~
Tumblr media
author’s note: this little fic honestly gave me such a hard time, mostly because i really wanted it to be perfect since, obviously, this whole thing is important to me. i think there’s at least a couple good parts. thanks so much to everyone who’s supported me and my self ships, especially my close friend sam !!
characters: arlequino ( karakuri circus ) x kero pierrot ( self insert )
word count: 3,080
summary: the nakamichi circus is always a sight to behold, but tonight, the show is something even more special
Tightrope acts had never appealed to Kero much at all. It wasn’t that they didn’t find them impressive -- many times, they’d watch an acrobat dance across the rope, utterly entranced by their grace and bravery in performing so high above the ground. No, it was simply that as a performer, the high wire act had never quite caught their eye. They were perfectly content doing their juggling, flipping, dancing, and acting down on the solid ground, where there was no danger of plummeting dozens of feet down to a terrible demise.
And yet, here they are, clutching the sheer fabric of their dress in sweaty palms, as they take a tentative step onto the thin cable suspended in the darkness of the tent’s loft. Far below them, the audience sits in silent anticipation and watches a lone illuminated figure step to the center of the circus ring. The countdown has begun, and they have only just over a minute to reach the middle of the tightrope before their cue.
Kero still stands with one foot on the taught cable and one foot on the landing behind them. Their hands begin to shake, then grip their dress tighter, scrunching the fabric between manicured, bandaid-wrapped fingers. They had practiced this walk so many times in the last few weeks, but it had always been on a rope only a few feet off the ground, or with the safety net below them. Always with Columbine and Shirogane by their side.
But now, they were alone, with only the lights below them and the hundreds of audience members that didn’t even know they were there.
Whose terrible idea was this?!
Kero swallows, their eyes closing tightly as their limbs continue to shake with anxiety. There was still time, they could turn back, and the show could adapt to the change. There was no way they could cross this wire, not like this --
A single note floats up to them, and then another, flowing into each other as the figure standing in the center of the ring below them begins to pluck melodies on the strings of his lute. A song they’ve never heard before, despite how often they’d sit and listen to him play. Had he written a song, just for this moment? Just for them?
His music is beautiful, like it always is. Each movement of his fingers perfect, each note played with the experience of two centuries and the surety of having been built for this and nothing else -- though he has done so much more since the day his veins were filled with silver and his eyes opened with purpose.
Kero takes a slow breath, feeling his notes fill their lungs, every chord vibrating in their chest as if he was playing the strings of their heart instead. Their eyes lift, and the shaking in their body ebbs away until they stand perfectly still. Of course they can’t climb down. This show was for them, for this one important moment, and to turn back would waste everyone’s efforts.
The show must go on.
Their hands release their tight grip on their dress, and they smooth out the fabric carefully before lifting their arms to their sides to mimic the pose Columbine had taught them. Like a dancer, she had said, body just so, and you won’t lose your balance. Just so, Kero thinks, as their back leg lifts and their weight shifts entirely onto the foot carefully centered on the cable. Just so.
They swing their leg forward, their skirt fluttering in the open air, and they feel the cold metal of the wire through the heel of their thin slippers. One step closer to the center. They breath out, and as they do, they take another step, their body held aloft by the music that still echoes up from the musician underneath them.
Each step is a note of its own, an A, an E, a sharp, both their music twisting together into an all new melody of its own, and almost without realizing, Kero smiles as they begin to dance across the tightrope. They take another step and spin on their toes, their skirt billowing out around them. Another note, another step, another spin, arms outstretched to keep their balance as they twirl on the wire.
How could they forget? There’s no danger, as long as Arlequino is there.
Kero’s steps come swiftly, each spin forward snapping into the next, as the gentle lute music below them begins to quicken with the beating of their heart. It builds higher and higher, fingers plucking a crescendo that leads them along the tightrope. The tempo takes their hand, the vibrato settles at their hip, and with each pirouette they grow closer to the center, their smile wide and barely keeping in the laughter that bubbles in their chest.
A sudden high note hits their ears, and Kero stops with the realization that they have reached the center of the tightrope. Their legs stiffen, arms once again spreading to find their balance, and in the silence, the spotlights click on and illuminates Kero Pierrot’s form standing atop the cable, the fabric of their dress glittering in the flash. Below, hundreds of eyes focus on them, practically burning into their body as they wait with bated breath to see what will happen.
Kero’s smile spreads again, and they turn on the tightrope, feeling themselves beginning to tilt backwards off the wire. The crowd’s gasps echo about the tent as they watch the clown fall from the highwire. The chill air rushes past them, yet still, their smile only stretches wider, and they tuck their arms against their chest, beginning to count under their breath.
One, they whisper, watching the flower crown that had been nestled safely on their head be blown off by the wind.
This feeling, of being center stage, of being the person that inspires wonder and fear and delight in the people around them. The tingling that fills their body with each performance, never diminishing, even now. It was the most wonderful feeling in the world.
Two, they think, breathing in the smell of caramel apples and popcorn, the perfect sweet and salty combination for snacking while watching a show.
The ground is rapidly approaching, but there is no fear in them, no anxiety freezing their limbs or terror choking their throat.
Three, they almost say, but before the number passes their lips, they feel hands encircle their waist, tilting them upright again as someone meets them in the air, his momentum now sending them upwards in a spiral. They look down with a grin, into the softly smiling face of their beloved.
“You missed your cue,” they laugh. “You were supposed to catch me on one and a half!”
“My deepest apologies, mon sourire,” Arlequino says, his silver hair fluttering in the wind. “I had been so captivated by the sight of you, I could not move.”
Kero laughs again, their face turning red from the flattery. They reach forward and wrap their arms around his shoulders tightly, and for a precious moment, they seem to float in the air together, flower petals escaped from their hair surrounding them in a perfect halo. Wires erupt from Arlequino’s body and spit fire below them to slow their descent further, and the audience watches them fall through the spiral of flames unharmed, landing with perfect grace.
Around them, the tent erupts in applause, and Kero smiles up at Arlequino as the fire around them dies out, leaving only the two of them in the center of a smoking circle. Arlequino returns the smile and moves to gently take their hands.
The show isn’t over yet.
Another spotlight clicks to life, and across the ring, a tall man standing atop a massive colorful ball catches the still falling flower crown in his hand. He holds it gently, as not to bruise the roses and daisies so carefully woven together, and his head tilts in the direction of the audience.
“Dearly beloved audience! We gather here today to celebrate not only the joining of these two souls, but the very essence of the circus!” Pantalone’s voice booms across the tent, and he slides a foot back, the ball beginning to roll and following the edge of the center ring, as the performer atop walks with ease. “Everyone of us shall bear witness to this ceremony, a once in a lifetime performance of love and showmanship!”
The ball walker continues to roll along the ring, the flower crown he had carefully caught now spinning about one slender finger. He smiles, and turns away from the crowd to steer towards the couple still standing in the center. He circles them for a moment before dropping the crown onto Kero’s head as they giggle.
“You forgot something, my darling Pierrot-san.”
“Thanks, Pantalone!”
Pantalone spins and circles them once more, before rolling the ball back out towards the audience in a spiral.
“Many years have I known Arlequino -- two centuries, despite my youthful appearance -- and I must assure you, my dear audience, he has smiled far more in our short time with this circus than he did in over two hundred years! Yes, perhaps this is due to newly discovered modern conveniences, such as this fabled washing machine I’ve yet to use, but!” He pauses, grinning as he hears laughter all around him. “I quite like to think it is all thanks to the strange human he met one day.”
“Haven’t you droned on long enough, old man?”
Another flash of light, and the eyes of the audience are once again drawn to the tightrope above their heads. A petite, blonde haired girl stands with perfect form on top of the wire, her arms crossed.
“These people came to see a show, not a speech! Least of all, one of your speeches, Panta-snore-ne.” The girl uncrosses her arms, and without a moment of hesitance, leaps from the tightrope. Pantalone steers underneath her, his arm outstretched, and she lands en pointe onto his palm. The seemingly eldest automata chuckles.
“Need I remind you we are the same age, Columbine?”
Columbine huffs, planting her hands on her hips indignantly.
“Yes, but I’m much cuter!” She puffs her cheeks, glaring at her fellow performer. “Besides, if anyone is gonna be making speeches, it should be the lovebirds!”
All at once, the spotlights around the tent click off, save for the one focused on the couple-to-be, now bathed in a pool of light. Kero still laughs, Columbine always knew how to keep things going one way or another, doesn’t she? They look up to Arlequino, and squeezes his hands in their own.
“You or me first, Arle-kun?”
“While usually, I would always allow you to go first, mon chéri, I do not think I will still have the ability to speak once I listen to your vows. So, with your permission, I will speak first.”
Kero smiles wide up at him, expectantly, and even now, Arlequino is nearly at a loss for words. After a moment, he clears his throat.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that you have changed my life completely. Before I met you, I lived only to serve, and only to bring death to others. When you looked at me, when you smiled at me...it was the first true smile I had ever seen. Even now, when I see your smile, I still feel that twisting in my chest. It is a wonderous feeling, and every moment I am thankful that you taught me how to feel joy.”
Arlequino’s hands wrap tighter around Kero’s, and he is grateful beyond words that he does not have the ability to cry. He watches redness blossom across his lover’s face, they are always so flustered by the things he says. He finds it ever so adorable.
Kero opens their mouth to say something, but they find themselves speechless, and instead laugh, shaking their head.
“Jeez, that’s gonna be hard to follow up. I’m not as eloquent as you, y’know?”
They laugh again, as they down at their hands entwined together with Arlequino’s. The butterflies have returned, tingling up and down their arms and legs. But a silent show is boring, they know, and they try to find their words again.
“I really...don’t know what to say here. I thought about it for so long, but I’m not all that good with words, especially not as good as you. None of the things I feel about you have shapes or sounds, they just exist!. I know I feel warm when you hold my hand, and I feel like floating when you say you love me. I know that when you were broken, it felt like the world really did end. And the day you and the others woke up, it felt like...it felt…”
Kero huffs and stomps their foot.
“See! No words! S’not fair that your vows were so poetic and pretty, and mine sound like I’m talking to myself in the mirror.”
Much to their surprise, Kero looks up to see Arlequino throw his head back in laughter. He looks back at them with a wide smile, a rarity on the usually cool as ice automaton.
“I think your vows are wonderful, mon sourire.”
Kero blinks, and again, they feel their face turn the same red as their clown nose. A new, bashful smile crosses their face, and they look away from their fiance for a moment.
“W-well, um, now that the vows are out of the way…”
“I do believe that is my cue.”
From within the darkness of the tent comes the sounds of rushing air, and the audience once again gasps as a figure flies above their heads. Another spotlight clicks on, and turns to illuminate a humanoid figure clad in white. Massive wings beat to keep the figure aloft, and clutched in its four arms is its silver haired puppeteer. With a flourish, Olympia flies forwards and lands in front of the couple at the center of the ring.
“You do need an officiant for these things, you know.”
Guy steps forward, slipping the finger cuffs of Olympia’s strings off his fingers. Arlequino looks down at him with a quirked eyebrow.
“Must you always make such an entrance?”
“Yes, obviously. Now, the rings!”
Guy reaches into the deep pockets of his jacket, and pulls out two rings, held between his pointer and middle fingers of both hands. Both are gold, with deep red garnets set into the metal. He hands one ring to each of them, then folds his arms behind his back.
“On to the main event, then. Do you, Kero Pierrot, take Arlequino, to have and to hold, in damage and repair, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, to love and cherish, so long as you shall live?”
Kero beams, even as their hand shakes, and they nod, taking Arlequino’s hand once more to slide the gold band onto his ring finger.
“I do!”
Guy smiles, then turns his head slightly to look at Arlequino, with a not insignificant amount of contempt. Animosity still brews between them, as they had been enemies for the majority of his life. But it has been a long time since either of them has fought, and though he is loath to admit it, the automaton had been integral in the saving of the world. Bygones are not quite yet bygones, but this moment, he won’t ruin.
“Do you, Arlequino, take Kero Pierrot, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, for richer or poor, to love and to cherish, so long as you shall live?”
It is bittersweet, Arlequino thinks, to hear Guy say those words. He knows well the wide discrepancy in their lifespans. Kero is only human, only living for, perhaps, another seventy years, if they’re lucky. And yet he, an automaton, cannot die. It is a forgone conclusion that he will live so much longer than them, existing still even when his love is gone.
But he knows, more than anything else, that he will love them so long as the gears in his chest continue to turn.
He smiles and takes Kero’s hand gently, and slides the ring that matches his own onto their slender ring finger.
“I do.”
Guy smiles, and claps his hands together.
“Then, by the power vested in me as a Shirogane, and by the state of...wherever we are right now, I now pronounce you husband and spouse!”
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
“Hush, Columbine!”
Kero laughs, and grins up at Arlequino, their hands moving to gently grip his shirt. Arlequino chuckles and returns their grin.
“Shall we give them what they want, mon sourire?”
“I can’t disappoint an audience, Arle-kun.”
Arlequino grins wider, and he leans down, meeting Kero’s lips in a kiss that sends the crowd around them into a cheering frenzy. The tent explodes in loud celebration, as animals and performers burst in from the back entrance, dancing and cartwheeling and, oddly, throwing knives into heart shapes.
The newly married couple pull away from their kiss, laughing as they’re surrounded by their fellow performers. Kero squeals when suddenly they’re lifted up in the air, finding themselves perched atop the shoulders of a slender, silver haired woman. Arlequino makes a surprised yelp, too, as he is similarly lifted by a grinning muscular man.
“May we present to you, Kero and Arlequino Pierrot!”
The two speak in unison, their arms spread as they present the couple now standing on their shoulders. Shirogane glances to the side, to her own husband, and that smile that had been so rare years ago now splits her face. Narumi smiles, too, even though he’s a little jealous that an automaton got an actual wedding, and he got covered in blood at his.
Arlequino recovers from his momentary shock of being picked up, and shakes his head, laughing. He reaches out and takes Kero’s hand, and they blink, before grinning back at him and wrapping their hand around his tightly. They both turn slightly, facing the audience, and they don’t let go of each other as they take a bow.
“Now, raise the curtain!” Arlequino’s soft, yet powerful voice shouts above the applause of the audience as he straightens his back. Beside him, Kero raises their chin.
“Let us give you all a proper welcome to the Nakamichi circus!”

here’s my thing for @nougatships yuletide event !! it’s time for the clowns!!
I ALSO WROTE A FIC AND IT GOT...A LITTLE OUT OF HAND......IT’S LIKE 2,800 WORDS DJSLFHSJDKL
anyway its under the cut djslfhsjl
pairing: arlequino x kero pierriot (my clownsona !! )
desc: for the first time ever, kero’s not performing in the circus’s show tonight. somehow, it seems that they have other plans.
“What? You’re not performing today?”
Masaru leans back from the mirror in front of him, makeup brush still held up in his hand. He tilts his head as he turns to look at the person beside him.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you miss a show!”
Kero Pierrot swipes their makeup brush across their eyelids to finish filling in the white heart around their eyes, then switches the brush for a puff, starting to press powder to their face to set the grease paint.
“I know, I know, my perfect attendance record is gonna be ruined! But I got an invitation that I just can’t turn down, even for our circus.”
Masaru tilts his head the other way, only more questions coming to mind.
“An invitation…?”
Suddenly a thought seems to come to him, and the large vanity is shaken, various makeup products tipping and falling to the ground, as Masaru leaps to his feet in a panic.
“You aren’t switching circuses, are you?!”
Kero turns to him, brows knit incredulously.
“No, I’m not switching circuses! What kind of clown do you think I am?!”
They huff and bop the boy’s nose with their powder puff, causing him to stumble back and go into a sneezing fit as white powder sticks to his face and hangs in the air like a cloud. Behind them both, deep laughter fills the dressing room. A large man leans up against one of the support beams of the tent.
“You should know better than to doubt Kero’s loyalty at this point, Masaru.”
“But Na-a-achoo! Narumi nii-chan…!”
He laughs again, even as Shirogane rushes past him with a box of tissues and to Masaru’s side, ever the worrier even now. Kero huffs again and turns back to the vanity, only to blink and pause as they scan the tabletop.
“Oh, now I can’t find the red paint…”
“Is this what you are looking for, mon chéri?”
A slender hand reaches down and picks up the red tube of grease paint that had fallen to the ground in the hubbub. All annoyance seems to leave Kero in an instant, the confusion on their face immediately turning into a wide smile.
“Arlequino!”
Arlequino smiles as he sets the tube of grease paint down on the vanity. Kero turns in their seat to face him and throws their arms up, and the automaton obliges the wordless request by leaning down to accept the kiss on his porcelain cheek. Kero’s arms wrap around his neck to pull him closer, and he laughs quietly.
“You are going to smudge your makeup, mon chéri.”
“I already set it this time!!”
“Ah, good, so I will only be covered in the powder.”
Kero laughs and releases their lover from the hug, allowing him to straighten from the perfect right angle he had been bent at. The detriments of being nine feet tall. He finds one of the seats scattered about the back room and pulls it up to the vanity, and sits down next to Kero as they turn to the mirror and continue to apply their makeup.
On their other side, Masaru stands up, taking another tissue from Shirogane and blowing into it to try and get all the powder out of his nose. Finally, it seems his sneezing fit has ended, and he shakes the white from his hair.
“What invitation did you get, then?”
Kero pauses painting the heart on the end of their nose, and turns to Masaru with a smile.
“A party, duh! For Yule!”
Masaru tilts his head as he takes his seat next to the clown once more.
“Yule?”
“Yeah! S’gonna be all fancy, too. I’ve never been to a fancy party, but I think it’s gonna be fun!”
He turns to Kero, his eyes narrowed.
“…I don’t think I can imagine you being fancy.”
“I’ll dump this powder on your head, Masaru!”
Masaru quickly leans back, prompting a laugh from Kero. They smile and turn back to the mirror to finish setting the grease paint on their nose, and wipe the excess from around their eyes.
“Arle and I are going together.”
“Ohhh, I didn’t know that!”
The sing song voice of Columbine fills the dressing room as the remaining two automaton members of Les Trios Pionniers finally enter. She bounds over to Arlequino’s side, grabbing his arm with a fiendish grin.
“You should’ve told me, Arle! I could’ve given you some very useful date advise, you know!”
“I do believe that is exactly why he did not tell you, Columbine,” Pantalone chuckles as he comes to lean against the end of the long vanity. The sole female of the automatons pouts, but mercifully lets go of her fellow circus performer.
“For your information, I have studied many human romance novels, and I am very knowledgeable about their complex relationships!”
“Yet which one of the three of us is actually in a relationship?”
“Well, I–…I mean, I’m just….shut up!”
Columbine crosses her arms and huffs, stamping her foot, and Pantalone barks a laugh as Arlequino shakes his head, smiling.
“I would much appreciate your input, Columbine. Perhaps you can give me advice on one how acts during a ‘Yuletide Ball’ while I am getting ready. Speaking of…”
He turns to Kero once more, and leans in to press a careful kiss to their cheek.
“I must take my leave for now, mon chéri. I wished to tell you good morning, but now I must attend to the task of preparing for this formal event.”
Kero smiles as they look at him, their face dusted red under their stage makeup.
“Okay!! I’ll see you later, Arle. Je t’aime.”
“Je t’aime, mon sourire.”
Arlequino stands, smiling, and pointedly ignoring whatever rude face Narumi was making at that moment. Luckily, he does not need to ignore it for long, as Shirogane delivers a swift elbow to her husband’s stomach, causing him to cough and double over. Arlequino bows thankfully to her, then turns and leads his fellow automatons out of the back dressing room.
The back room is quiet for a few moments, save for Narumi’s whining, before Masaru breaks the silence yet again.
“Wait, if you aren’t performing today, Kero-san, why are you putting on your stage makeup?”
Kero Perriot turns to him with a smile, as they unclip the barrette that had been holding up their dyed green bangs.
“You know a clown doesn’t go anywhere without their makeup, Masaru!”
-
Kero’s teeth chatter lightly as they pull the fluffy cape around their shoulders. Perhaps it had not been the smartest idea to wait for Arlequino outside the warm tent, instead choosing to stand out in the biting winter air, soft snow piled all around them from the recent blizzard.
But they had just been so excited, and couldn’t stand to sit and wait inside the tent as the others prepared for that day’s show. And watching them might make them rethinking going to the party.
It’d been a long time since they hadn’t participated in the nightly circus shows, after all.
So here they wait, shivering in the cold, wishing they had chosen the fleece lined leggings instead. Even if the tights they had picked were pretty cute.
“Wh-where is he…” They mumble, rubbing their hands together quickly so the friction will warm their numbing fingers. They didn’t think getting ready could take so long…but Columbine had mentioned trying to give him advice, and she does have a tendency to be long winded. Plus finding an outfit that fit an automaton like Arlequino could be quite difficult.
Maybe they should just go check on them.
They start walking back through the grounds towards the trailer they know Les Trois Pionniers usually reside in. Well, Pantalone and Columbine reside there–Arlequino often stayed with Kero in their trailer, nowadays. Snow crunches beneath their shoes, and they hope the damp doesn’t damage them.
They pass through the back tents and trailers of the circus, waving to their fellow performers as they pass by towards the big top. Finally, they reach the trailer far in the back, larger than most, to accommodate the automaton’s size. They can see lights from the windows, and they puff their cheeks. So they are still in there!
They walk towards the door to ask just what is taking them so long, but they pause when they hear the voices of the three automatons inside.
“–corsages are very important! Flowers have many meanings, you know, and you can tell someone quite a lot with a corsage!” Columbine’s fretting floats from one of the open windows. Only automatons, incapable of being affected by the temperature, could stand to have the window open when it was so freezing.
“I do not think a corsage will be easy to find in the middle of winter, Columbine. And I do not think we have time to find a florist,” Pantalone’s deep baritone refutes.
“Oh, you’re right, aren’t you? Perhaps I should have found one in advance…” Arlequino’s soft, yet deep voice, unmistakable for Kero. Though there was a shakiness to it they’d never heard before.
They pause before they start to climb the stairs. It seems that the automatons were deep in conversation with each other, and they felt reluctant to interrupt. Not to mention...they were curious to hear more of what they were talking about. They carefully shuffle up under the open window to listen.
“Yes, you should have! The flowers are extremely important!”
“As you have said so many times, but now it is too late.”
“Hmph, fine. Alright, next: compliments! Compliments are the bread and butter of any relationship!”
“You say this as if he is not already in the relationship.”
“No, no, Pantalone, let her continue. This is a formal date, I should perform to my utmost best. What, ah, per say, should I compliment them on…?”
“Anything! Everything! Compliment their outfit–! Do you know what their outfit is, by the by?”
“No, they would not let me see…”
“Oh, how romantic! The mystery! The shock! I want to see it all! Are you sure I can’t come, Arle-chan?”
“Yes, unfortunately, it will be only us attending this ball.”
“You seem quite relieved about that, Arlequino. Glad to have a night alone with your darling?”
“I-it is not as if it is an entirely private affair, there will be many others in attendance…”
“Oh, did you hear that! He stuttered!”
“I did not stutter.”
“You did, Arle-chan! You did!”
The trailer roars with the laughter of the two automatons, Arlequino’s protests lost under the clamor. Kero smiles and presses a hand to their mouth to stifle their own laughter. Perhaps they shouldn’t be eavesdropping on their lover readying himself for their date–but they couldn’t bring themselves to interrupt this little meeting between ancient friends.
“Ehehe, oh, come now, Arle-chan, hold still! I’m not done with your hair!”
“I will not sit and suffer your mockery!”
“Sit, man, sit, and we’ll stop laughing at your expense.”
“Hmph, fine…”
“There you go. Now, what else is there…ah, yes! Dancing!”
“Dancing? There will be dancing?”
“Of course there will, dummy, it’s a ball! That’s basically all they’re for!”
“What kind of dancing? I, I am not very good at dancing, I am a musician, I play the music, I don’t dance to it.”
“Mm, I think waltz is the most popular one.”
“I most certainly do not know how to waltz. What do I do if they want to waltz?”
“Do you really think Kero-san knows how to waltz?”
“I don’t know! They know a great many dances I do not understand! What if they ask to dance and I am left floundering on the dance floor like a fool?”
“You are a fool, Arlequino.”
“You know very well what I mean, Pantalone!”
“My, Arle-chan, I’ve never seen you so worked up! Don’t worry your little head so much, I’m sure you will be fine. You’ve always been the second most graceful one of us.”
“Second?”
“After me, of course!”
‘Ah. Of course.”
“Don’t you give me that look.”
“Are you quite finished with my hair? I am already far too late.”
“Oh, yes, yes, just give me a moment more…”
Maybe now was a good time to make themselves known, since Arlequino would be ready quite soon. They step back to the window and climb the metal stairs of the trailer, then knocked on the door.
“Arlequino? We’re gonna be late if you don’t hurry up!”
No need for them to know they’d been eavesdropping.
They hear heavy footsteps from inside, and as the door is opened, they have to crane their head up to look at Pantalone.
“Hello, Kero-san. Do not worry, Arlequino will be ready in a moment’s time.”
Behind him, Columbine seems to finish whatever last touch she had wanted to make with Arlequino’s hair, and she slips under Pantalone’s arm and into the doorway.
“Oh, Keri, you look so cute!” She coos, her hands clapping together. Kero smiles, bashfully so as red further colors their cold cheeks.
“Thank you, Bunny…”
“Would you two please make room so I may actually leave the trailer?”
“If you so insist, dear musician.”
With impish smiles, the two part, allowing Arlequino and Kero to see each other at last. He steps forward, his silver hair cascading over one shoulder and contrasting with the black coat he wore. Gold trim glints in the light that halos him from behind. Kero looks up at him, and feels their heart stop inside their chest.
Arlequino, conversely, feels like his mechanical chest has gained a heart, as he looks down at the human that has changed him so thoroughly. Kero’s green hair is pulled up into pigtails, a fascinator with a cone shaped hat tilted to the side sitting on their head, the band covered in bows of various pastels. Their upper half is covered with a warm winter cape, the skirt of their colorful dress wide and fluffy, and their tights twinkle with sequins.
For a long moment, they are quiet, until Columbine jabs a hand into Arlequino’s side to get his attention. She quickly mouths ‘compliment!’, and he nods, looking back to Kero.
“You, ah, you look very lovely, mon chéri. Very lovely, indeed, yes. I have never seen you wear something so…feminine.”
There is a ‘clack!’ as Pantalone hits his face with his palm.
Kero huffs, even as they flush red.
“You know I don’t like being called feminine, Arle!”
Arlequino blinks and waves his hands as he quickly tries to backtrack.
“No, no, of course, not feminine, that is to say, it is, I haven’t seen you in…this particular style before. It…suits you very well. Truly.”
Kero’s lip juts out still, but their face turns a further shade of red, and they look down, fingers beginning to mess with the tassel on their cape.
“Well, you…look handsome, y’know. Bunny did a good job with your hair.”
Columbine practically beams with pride, and Arlequino smiles, shaking his head slightly. He turns momentarily to take his lute from where it sits in its case, then steps out of the trailer with Kero.
“Thank you, mon chéri. Though between you and I, Columbine takes far too long to be a reliable hairdresser.”
“Hey! I’ll remember that next time you ask me to braid your hair!”
Kero blinks and laughs a little, and Arlequino glows, as he always does when he makes someone laugh. Especially Kero. He offers out his elbow, and Kero takes it, hugging his arm to their chest.
“I believe we must away, lest we be too late for the festivities.”
“Yeah! You gotta make up for making me wait so long, though…I was standing out in the cold for, like, half an hour!” Kero pouts as they look up. Arlequino quirks an eyebrow.
“Why did you not simply wait inside?”
“If I did that, I would’ve gotten caught up with setting up for the show!”
“Mm, I suppose that is quite true. You never can leave a problem unsolved, can you?” He chuckles.
“Nope! C’mon!”
Kero starts to pull him along, away from the trailer, and he smiles, sparing only a glance back to his compatriots. Pantalone raises a hand to wave, as Columbine cups her hands around her mouth.
“Don’t forget what I told you about mistletoe!”
Arlequino blinks, and he is grateful for his porcelain face that lacks the ability to blush. Still, he laughs, and turns back to follow Kero as they pull him towards the Yuletide Ball. They look at him with a wide smile.
“Did you remember to tune your lute?”
“Of course, mon chéri. Did you remember your juggling rings and modelling balloons?”
“Yeah!” They lift the large pink handbag they carry in their other hand. “I also brought some flyers from the circus!”
“Ah, wonderful idea.”
“Thanks, Arle. Remember, we’re there to have fun, but also to be ambassadors of the Nakamichi Circus!” Kero nods, their expression set with determination
“No rest for the wicked, is it?” Arlequino tilts his head with a smile
“Hey, you can take the clown out of the circus, but you can’t take the circus out of the clown!”
“Quite right you are, mon chéri. Come, let us show these revelers a hint of what our circus has to offer.”
“That’s super ominous, Arle,” Kero says with a laugh.
“Ah. Apologies,” Arlequino mumbles.”
“S’okay. I know what you mean.”
Kero smiles up at him, and Arlequino can do nothing else but smile back, wider than he’d ever thought was possible for an automaton like him.
“Je t’aime, mon sourire.”
Kero blinks, and their smile splits their face.
“Je t’aime, Arle!”

Valentine Love Letter
alright guys, here’s my love letter to arlequino for @megane-shipping and @nougatships event !!! it got super long so i put it under a cut djskflhkhd
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Arle-kun,
I don’t really know why I’m writing this letter, to be honest. I mean, it’s not like you’re far away. I’m looking at you right now. We’re in one of the caravans, the one with the good acoustics and the bean bags. You’re sitting with Bunny-chan -- you just finished tuning your instruments -- and you’re brainstorming some new music for upcoming circus acts. I love to sit in on these sessions. Your lute playing is always so beautiful, y’know? Gosh, of course you do, it’s what you were built for. To be an incredible musician. Well, you passed that by leaps and bounds.
But something about these little music writing sessions feels...different. Special, I guess. When you play completed music, it’s so graceful, so perfect, it’s almost hard to believe. And I love to hear it, I really do. More than anything. But in here, when you’re still just trying to think of what notes to play, when you strum your lute in little experimental chords, only to shake your head and start playing in a different key…
It just feels so human, you know?
Have you ever considered yourself an artist? I think you are. After all, you are a musician. You make art out of sound, inspire emotions in people just by playing your music. I think that’s what really makes you more human, not loving me. I mean, that’s definitely a bonus! But you have such creativity in you, Arle-kun. I see it every time you write songs for the circus, every time you just get into that groove and start playing and playing with no sense of where you’re going. I love those moments so much.
I wonder if you ever write songs about me. Is that selfish to think about? Maybe, but it’s not like I expect you to. Well, I mean, I do expect you to, but because you’re you, and isn’t that what musicians do? Write love songs?
Do you sing, Arle-kun? I’d really love to hear you sing.
Oh gosh you noticed me blushing from across the room ok letter writing postponed!!
I think you’re done fussing over me now. You’ve gone back over to Bunny-chan, but you keep looking over here with that worried look on your face. It’s actually really cute. Your brows get all scrunched up and you run your fingers up and down the strings of your lute. I feel bad about finding your concern adorable, but it’s true.
Heck, I wrinkled up the letter trying to hide it! Oh well. I still dunno if I’m even gonna give you this letter. I’ll probably just fold it up and put it with my journals.
I think I know why I started writing, though. It’s Valentine’s day today. I’ve always loved it, even if I didn’t often have someone to share it with. I just love the romance of it, the hearts and the teddy bears with cute little sayings stitched into them. And the candy! You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve made myself sick on heart shaped boxes of chocolate. It’s a lot. Like, a probably reckless amount.
I wonder if we’re going to do anything special? We’ve been so busy with the circus, we didn’t really get to plan anything. That’s alright, though. I like this, too. Just sitting and listening to your music, and tonight we’ll perform together like we always do. It’ll be amazing.
But all this buzz about love and romance made me think of our wedding. Just one month from now. Can you believe it’s so close? Time didn’t use to pass so quickly for me, but now it’s practically here and I almost don’t know what to do.
A month to the day. I didn’t think about that, either. Maybe a Valentine wedding would be romantic, but I like the day we picked. The day we met, remember? I can’t believe it feels so long ago, since you saved me and Lise, and I smiled at you. The first human smile you ever saw. That really changed everything, didn’t it?
But maybe that’s why I’m writing this letter. Because I’m nervous. The wedding jitters, right? Doesn’t every bride, groom, and in between get those? What’s the gender neutral version of that, anyway? Gride? Broom? Oh gosh am I a broom.
Are you nervous too, Arle-kun? I know you don’t like to let me see you nervous, but you can’t always fool me. You stutter when you’re nervous, and it’s the cutest thing. Your fingers twitch, too, like you’re trying to pluck the strings of an instrument that isn’t there. I see you do it a lot more these days. I hope it’s a good sort of nervous.
I wonder if you’ll like my wedding dress. I didn’t want one at first, honestly. I don’t really like dresses, or being feminine. Vilma was actually helping me look for some kinda pantsuit. Shortsuit? Something fun that also involved pants. Or shorts. Or pantaloons. You know, the fluffy pants like Dottore-kun wears?
But we couldn’t find anything that really vibed with me, until I saw this dress. It just felt...I dunno, like a wowza moment! It kinda has Gone With The Wind vibes. Have you ever seen that? Yeah me neither. I wonder if the skirt will twirl out like the dresses do in movies when we dance. I know you’re nervous about the dancing, but I know you’ll do great.
I don’t know where I’m going with all this. I think I’m just writing to write. Just to get all my nervous energy out on this page so it doesn’t keep spinning inside me. I probably could’ve just written it all in one of my journals, but I like doing it this way, like I’m writing a letter to you. I know I can always talk to you...but I think this letter is a little too embarrassing to send, even for me!
Or, I guess, I just don’t want you worrying about me. I know you will, if you read this. And you probably have enough to worry about with the wedding coming, and I don’t want to make things harder for you. I’m always afraid of making things harder for you. I don’t know why.
Oh, it looks like you and Bunny-chan finished writing your music. I guess I should wrap this letter up, huh? It’s gonna be time to start setting up for the show soon, and I don’t want to be late.
Maybe I’ll make a balloon heart and ask you to be my Valentine. Wouldn’t that be romantic?
I love you, Arle-kun. I know I’ll tell you that.
From your fiance, with all the love in my heart
Kero Pierrot
