You read that right, it's a redesign by Naomi Mendes, I even decided to change where her prosthesis would be, but it's brand new not only in design but in story, but this is just her appearance in Rottmnt, I will make an appearance for her in all versions of TMNT, 1987, 2003, 2012, the movies the actresses who could play her if she was real from the serie (but the prosthesis will be in the same place)

One of the best shows I've ever been to was Dirty Three at ATP 2011. Them being normally such a serene and reserved band in the studio, I was really taken aback by the rip-roaring, high energy rock arrangements they gave their songs. They're the only post rock band to ever kick ass.

I'll always remember Warren looking to the back of the room, realizing that they had more time, and asking the audience, "any requests?" Me and the very pretty older Australian woman next to me, at the exact same time, yelled out "SUE'S LAST RIDE!!!!!" and then looked at each other with the biggest beamingest smiles.

I've been listening to this incredible live version of Ocean Songs, recorded at a different ATP, and it's really been taking me back to that show--not to mention giving me a whole new angle to look at one of my all time favorite albums. I really hope I get to see them again someday.

Romanzi per gli amanti dei film cult anni ‘80

In questi giorni, forse a causa dell’arrivo della quarta stagione di Strager Things, io e le mie amiche siamo state colpite dalla nostalgia per i nostri film anni 80′ preferiti e ci siamo divertite  a ricordarli: Spalsh una sirena a Manhattan, Non per soldi ma per amore, Non dirle chi sono, Casa dolce casa?, Corto circuito, Scuola di Polizia, Labyrinth, La storia Fantasica, La storia infinita, Willow, Ritorno alla quarta dimensione, Top gun, Heathers, Laguna Blu, Higlander, Flashdance, Un compleanno da ricordare, Tutto quella notte, Cuori ribelli e tanti altri...

Così mi è  venuta l’idea di prendere alcuni di questi film anni 80′, che non fossero già tratti da dei libri, e cercare dei romanzi con trame molto simili per poterveli suggerire.

Essendo due ragazzi abbastanza sfigati e non molto intelligenti hanno deciso di cercare di guadagnare qualcosa da questo incidente che gli è capitato e grazie al passaparola ora se qualcuno ha un problema strano, nel senso di paranormale, li può chiamare. Peccato che siano più i casini che combinano che i problemi che risolvono. Questo libro è piuttosto demenziale siete avvertiti, e sconclusionato, e strano, ma se non altro, in alcuni punti certamente riprende l’humor e il vibe dei film di Ghostbusters. Per questo ho deciso di citare questo invece dei tanti romanzi con medium che vedono fantasmi disponibili, perchè i Ghostbusters non era medium!

El rayo de luz que necesitábamos - Solar Power, lo nuevo de Lorde.

Y cuando pensábamos que nada podía estar a la altura de Melodrama, temiendo que una de las voces más prometedoras de los últimos tiempos tuviera una prematura retirada del medio musical,Lorde sorprendió con el golpe de energía solar que necesitábamos: Solar Power, un pedacito de verano para despedir agosto por lo alto.

En junio de 2017 Lorde nos regaló quizás (y lo manejo como un supuesto sólo porque no escuché TODOS los discos existentes) el mejor álbum de la década.  Antecedido por la joyita electropop que es Pure Heroine, Melodrama marcó el final de la fiesta. El segundo material de estudio de la neozelandesa es un disco sobre una ruptura, crecer bajo el ojo público y la soledad que trae consigo la fama. Es incómodo, porque si hay algo que caracteriza a Lorde a través de sus distintas eras - más allá de su voluminoso pelo, el particular color de su voz y sus pasos de baile sobre el escenario - es adueñarse de la incomodidad como lugar propio.  Lorde no quiere ser parte de la realeza ni de la élite musical, quiere irse de la fiesta, de California, de un mundo hiper-conectado que prioriza la virtualidad - más aún en medio de una Pandemia.  En una entrevista para the Guardian previo al lanzamiento de su último álbum, la artista comentaba: 

“Me siento muy cómoda en los períodos de limbo, o momentos en dónde me siento asustada o vulnerable”  

Y quizás esa comodidad en lo naturalmente incómodo fue lo que llevó a Lorde a estar a la altura de la reputación que la precedía; para - aún bajo la presión que representa lanzar nuevo material después de un álbum aclamado por el público y la crítica - resurgir fortalecida en una nueva era. El futuro de la música 

Nacida en Nueva Zelanda bajo el nombre de Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, Lorde eligió su nombre artístico a raíz de su fascinación por la realeza y la aristocracia; agregándole una e al título nobiliario masculino para darle un toque de femineidad. De esa misma pasión nació su primer single, Royals, que la posicionara como una de las principales voces femeninas del momento. Tanto el single como su álbum debut Pure Heroine, se mantuvieron en lo alto de las listas musicales y le merecieron su primer nominación a un premio Grammy por Mejor álbum vocal pop. Si Melodrama era el final de la fiesta, Solar Power es la mañana después.  Lorde define este tercer disco como su álbum de marihuana (aunque en conversación con the New York Times confesó haber pesado que sería un álbum de ácido); y aunque a primera escuchada se percibe ligero, dista de ser un conjunto de canciones banales.  En un medio que consume música pop al mismo tiempo que categoriza al género como poco serio, sencillo y hasta infantil; Lorde lo reivindica consagrándose como la gran representante de toda una generación de escuchas. Solar Power es pop hecho por quienes crecieron con el pop como mala palabra, para aquellos que tuvimos la etapa rebelde, “dark” y negadora de todo lo que fuera industria musical, pop masticado y estribillos pegadizos. Quienes, como Melodrama, fuimos a la fiesta para verla a través de una copa con la espalda contra la pared.  Hace tiempo circulaba por las tinieblas de Facebook un meme que decía algo en las líneas de “ya te vas a arrepentir de todas las cumbias que no bailaste por andar de rockerito”. En este caso, podríamos ver a Solar Power como las melodías que nos perdimos por defender que la música emo “no era sólo una fase” y, aunque la crítica lo vea como un retroceso para una artista que se distinguió siempre por ser “distinta”,  se necesita de alguien distinto para romper con la contracultura como pose.

Como dice la canción que da nombre al disco, Solar Power es cuando Lorde se desnuda frente a su público. La artista buscó reflejar en este material la esencia de su casa en Auckland, lejos de los paparazzis, disfrutando del verano en enero, perdiendo tardes completas bajo los rayos de sol. 

Mucho se ha comentado sobre su reminiscencia al sonido de los tempranos 2000, con una clara influencia de artistas como Natalie Imbruglia; aunque más allá se percibe la esencia del auténtico hippismo, ese en el que hablar del poder de las energías no era motivo para desvalorizar a un artista. Y quizás sea por la calidez de California o la temática de Mood Ring, aunque yo lo veo del todo claro en mi favorita personal: Fallen Fruit. Permítanse un momento para escuchar el tema, ojos cerrados y mente abierta, y díganme si no podría haber sonado en el festival de Monterey. La canción tiene dos momentos claros: un primer verso y estribillo muy the Mamas & the Papas y un puente que es lo más Melodrama del disco, tan así que podría haber sido Sober III. Y es que si Fallen Fruit es una canción de protesta, que alienta un despertar colectivo de conciencia ante el mundo que estamos destruyendo, ese puente refleja la desesperanza ante la crisis climática; hasta que el reingreso de la guitarra acústica trae un rayo de luz porque quizás todavía podemos hacer algo para cambiar el mundo.

La parte emotiva del álbum llega en el segundo verso de Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All) y el track 9, Big Star; ambas instancias de homenaje para Pearl, el perro de la cantante que falleciera luego de casi dos años de acompañar a Lorde en su Nueva Zelanda natal. Sobre esto dijo en su newsletter:

“El duelo es una fuerza transformadora. Nunca lo había experimentado de una manera tan completa y hace que cuestiones todo.” 

Secrets From a Girl termina con una suerte de monólogo en voz de Robyn, cantante y compositora sueca, que asume el rol de “guía” ante el duelo, indicando el camino a seguir para transitar el dolor; pero también como una transición en la adultez, entrando en el tópico “coming of age” que Lorde ha explorado múltiples veces en su obra. La cantante ha descrito esta outro como las palabras de una azafata surrealista que muestra el camino hacia el “amanecer”, invitando a familiarizarnos con nuestro pasado para llegar al camino de la aceptación. 

The Man With the Ax es el espacio necesario de romanticismo, una balada dedicada a la relación de Lorde con su pareja Justin Warren. Si Melodrama es entonces un disco de ruptura, Solar Power logra encontrar el momento justo para reflexionar sobre el amor; otra manera de mostrar la luz donde previamente conocimos la oscuridad. Se hace evidente así la conexión que la artista busca establecer con sus trabajos anteriores, tanto en la continuación de reflexiones y temáticas reiteradas; como en los guiños que muchas de sus letras hacen a Melodrama y Pure Heroine. 

Viaje al fin del mundo.

No sería honesto reseñar Solar Power sin hacer mención a una de sus más grandes influencias:  En 2019, antes de abocarse a la composición de lo que hoy es Solar Power, Lorde viajó a la Antártida para conectar con la belleza del mundo natural y comprender de cerca las consecuencias del cambio climático. A su regreso, con una perspectiva completamente nueva del mundo que habita y el rol que podía ocupar en plena crisis climática; Lorde entendió que la música actual necesitaba asumir un compromiso con el planeta.

“No soy una activista del cambio climático, soy una estrella pop. Yo alimento el fuego de una máquina gigante, escupiendo emisiones sobre la marcha. Hay mucho sobre lo que no sé.”

Decidió entonces editar su música en formato físico de manera amigable para el ecosistema, rechazando la idea de lanzar un CD y optando en cambio por la venta de su disco en vinilo y de manera digital a través de un "music box" que incluye el código de descarga a una versión extendida del álbum y material gráfico exclusivo; además de hacer mención a la emergencia climática tanto en sus letras como en el material gráfico que acompaña el álbum (en el videoclip de Solar Power puede verse una pila de basura en medio de la playa, en reclamo de la contaminación de los cursos de agua). 

La factoría de Antonoff 

“No hice un disco de Jack Antonoff. Hice un disco de Lorde y él me ayudó a hacerlo. Darle esa cantidad de crédito es francamente insultante”. 

Si Solar Power les recuerda a lo último de Taylor Swift y Lana del Rey, hay un por qué (más allá de tratarse de tres mujeres fuertes en la industria actual); porque detrás de sus más recientes discos se encuentra Jack Antonoff, sin dudas el productor pop del momento.  También guitarrista de la banda Fun y líder del grupo indie Bleachers, el músico es un purista del sonido y firme defensor de capturar momentos y climas “realistas” en sus producciones. Por ejemplo, a lo largo de Solar Power pueden escucharse sirenas y conversaciones de fondo, consecuencia de haber grabado algunos de los tracks con la puerta del estudio abierta, como invitando a los sonidos autóctonos de Nueva York a integrarse al arte. Y es en esa esencai de la ciudad que se cuela indiscriminadamente por los micrófonos que Solar Power se convierte en un disco lleno de vida.  Sin embargo, Antonoff ha sido ampliamente criticado por opacar a las artistas que produce, transformando la música para adecuarla a sus estándares; acusación que caló perfecto en la reformulación del sonido de Lorde (a pesar de que ambos habían colaborado previamente en Melodrama).

Más allá de esto, la huella de Antonoff (quien co-produjo todo el álbum junto a la cantante además de colaborar con la composición de algunos temas), es fácil de percibir en Solar Power. Las guitarras acústicas, puentes pegadizos y capas de percusión que acompañan la voz de Lorde. 

En resumen, Solar Power es el rayo de luz que necesitábamos para sobrevivir los últimos coletazos del invierno reivindicando la fuerza transformadora del pop. El álbum está disponible en Spotify, en el canal de YouTube de la artista (en formato de videos individuales para cada tema) así como en las principales plataformas de streaming.

PAST.

Born and raised as an Irish Catholic in Derry during The Troubles of Northern Ireland, young Maddy learnt from a young age that there are people who will kill you based on something you cannot control. Born and raised amongst a family of nine children, however, she also learnt that being different is a gift and not something you should hide. Being the same as everyone else, one of many, might make life easy, but it certainly doesn’t make life honest and good. This realisation came when she met the ghost of her aunt in the second-floor bathroom at Hogwarts – known as Moaning Myrtle; Maddy didn’t know why she was the only one of her siblings to have been granted magical powers, but she sure as hell – sorry for the swearing! – understood in this very moment that keeping a low profile like Myrtle had done fifty years ago would neither protect her life, nor change the world for the better. Thus, in the span of four years, she grew to be the most honest version of herself that she could possibly be: an Irish Catholic Muggleborn Witch with a love for superhero comics. Selling Muggle trinkets at Hogwarts (ranging from ballpens to comic books) she was known as the proud Hufflepuff who knew how to befriend about anyone. ‘Kill them with kindness’ became her motto, and while she still had a lot to learn regarding how to be as self-assured as she liked to present herself to be, she was, for the most part, succeeding in her mission to introduce Purebloods to Muggle culture, building bridges for those two worlds in ways she knew she’d never be able to do it for the English and the Irish at home.

PRESENT.

The cat who dragged her into the Order was Maurice Creevey and his radio show. Her “What do I possibly have to offer them, though?” was answered with a “Perspective,” and it was all she needed to hear to be convinced. Had he said ‘your wits’, ‘your optimism’, or ‘the stakes you have in this war,’, she would’ve declined and gone back home to her Muggleborn flatmates who have turned their back to the Wizarding World after graduating from Hogwarts. But he said: “Perspective”, and that was the one thing Maddy has always believed is in her range of capabilities. After all, she does have a different perspective on it all, and she is more than willing to teach people of this perspective, of her side of the story, to make them empathise and want to tear down the walls of cultural divide alongside with her. She firmly believes that everyone could be friends if they only understood each other, and she’s not afraid to grab her megaphone to have communication happen. Either way, she does not care for another war like there is at home, does not care at all for seeing more people she loves be killed by being shot in the back, the way it happened to her father in 1972. So her main focus right now (except finding an empty place in Diagon Alley to set up her Muggle shop) is to identify the more radical members of the Order and explain to them that they shouldn’t hurt anyone on behalf of the Muggleborns, or there will be direct retaliation against exactly those. And once she’s got them in her pocket, she wants to update the Hogwarts curriculum to educate Wizards about Muggles to finally end the divide – and perhaps even the Statue of Secrecy, one day.

CONNECTIONS.

DEDALUS DIGGLE: Funky Funny Man has a shop on Diagon Alley, and while Maddy absolutely despises Wizarding Candy, she wonders if the flamboyant (and very handsome) Wizard might want to give her a corner of his shop for her to set up her own. Just until she has enough money scraped together to buy her own shop. And if the poor Muggleborns entering this world had to suffer through ear-wax jelly beans, then it’s about time that Purebloods experience the greatness that is Muggle candy. MAURICE CREEVEY: Feisty Pretty Man is the one who attracted Maddy to the Order. His voice drew her in, his face made her stay. Who can blame her? When she asked him what the Order could possibly want from her, he said: “Perspective”, and it was what Maddy needed to realise that her whole thing about changing the world one kind deed at a time might’ve just found a home to grow in. Whether Maurice knows it or not, he’s become her mentor, and Maddy couldn’t look at him with any more heart-eyes if she were a cartoon. BENJY FENWICK. Once, Maddy would’ve considered Benjy one of her closet friends. Despite not being in the same house as one another, they bonded over Quidditch and spent as much time outside of the common room together as they could. Then Benjy got injured and came back to school changed. Suddenly, he was following her roommate (and world’s biggest annoyance) Dorcas Meadowes around like a little puppy. The fact that Dorcas pulled him into the Order shouldn’t surprise her, but she can’t help but feel a bit hurt this isn’t her and Benjy on this adventure together.
