The two best modes of transportation in one illustration: bicycles and ferries. (well, if there was also somehow a train it would’ve been perfect) We were headed to a flea market, but this short ferry ride is obviously an everyday commute, too. I did this one entirely with @fabercastellusa PITT markers, which turn out to be really fun for a very quick sketch like this. . . . #fabercastell #fabercastellpittartistpen #urbansketching #travelsketching #drawingpeople #peoplesketching #sketchingpeople #reportageillustration #stillmanandbirn #sketchwalker #sketchwalk #globalsketchers #urbansketchers #usk #travelsketcher #travelsketch #usknl #uskamsterdam (at Amsterdam, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7dXUorzMb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Since last year, my usual weekday schedule has been to drop Sufi at school, then sit at a Chai Point nearby and work from there for three hours before picking her up from school. This Chai Point is quaint because it has a minimal seating area with glass in front that opens to a few stone benches put under the shade of trees. In those three hours, I see delivery agents waiting to pick up the food order, pourkarmikas taking a rest after they have finished cleaning the streets, and retired elders bidding their time watching their phone screens or talking to their other retired friends who trickle down as the noon time approaches. There are a few other peculiar but regular arrivals too. A young man arrives sharp at 11 am, asks for ice water at Chai Point, then goes sit and meditate in front of the cafe, after which he goes for a smoke and then stares at his phone screen. He is always impeccably dressed, and I have noticed him roam around the cafe even during the evening at times. He wears loafers, tight jeans and a floral shirt. The sunglasses are always there in his pocket when he is not wearing them. There is also a couple who show up in different vehicles every other day. What they wear is really important to them because I have seen the guy cleaning his shoes with a tissue each time, and after having their bun omelette and chai, they take multiple selfies before heading out. At times the photo sessions go on for longer if the food takes time to arrive. Both of them in a complimentary way help each other to ease out any creases that come up on their clothes while sitting. Seeing the mundane around me more observantly during those three hours has given me glimpses of what a routine means to different people. I am glad that I get to sketch them and record part of their day this way.
Sketching at the coffee shop again. There was a young man who had a long beard but everywhere else was clean-shaven. I'm not sure if it was a fake beard because he looked too young to have a beard that long. #sketchings #sketchingpeople #urbansketching https://www.instagram.com/p/CnPBmy5u_9Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I captured an old school parking attendant booth at Golden Mile Complex. What a turnout at the month-end meet up. Time to say Good bye to Little Thailand! . The mobility offered by using an iPad to sketch is tremendous. I remembered standing at a little unobtrusive corner and sketching away and most passers-by thought I was just using a mobile smart device without arousing any curiosity what I was doing with it. I could also expand the page that I was sketching on, at the same time zooming in and out when necessary if I couldn't really see or when I was detailing. Or reposition the drawings for a more effective layout on the spread. The only setback was, the hand that was holding the device got tired pretty quick. I probably need to get something to make it stand on its own. Then perhaps when that happens, somebody may take notice.

“PEOPLE YOU MIGHT FIND/SEE IN A HOTEL LOBBY AFTER 4:30 AM” That is, except for the “Vaulter” who is left over from a previous exercise. Lickety-split sketches of folks wandering around a hotel lobby. No time for details or color.
