Okay aside from the BRILLIANT parallels of Medusa and Annabeth, and Percy literally pushing her down the stairs—Percy constantly insisting that you shouldn’t have to earn love from anyone! And your parents especially!

The change to have Percy knowingly sacrifice himself—for Annabeth’s mistake from her pov—and refusing to ask his father for help and then be saved?

Poseidon reaffirming that Percy does NOT need to earn his love. That he will help him because he loves him and Percy is his child!

And the parallel of Percy and Thalia and therefore Poseidon and Zeus—that when Zeus’s forbidden child sacrificed herself the best he could do was turn her into a tree (a hero’s end) while Poseidon saves Percy?

I truly believe this is Sally’s influence on Poseidon—not that he’s saving Percy because he loved her, but that her humanity and insistence on love and goodness (which she passed to Percy) made him realize that the gods needed to do things differently.

He is as changing as the sea, and it’s only natural that Athena—rigid, strategic, orderly Athena—be his counter part.

This series feels like Riordan has been stewing on his books for nearly 20 years and came up with so many little details he wished he could have added. There are so many more narrative details that really enhance the “epic” of the story and make me think of the structure of Ancient Greek plays—the chorus is just chanting “love is given, not earned”

Percy has NO REASON to trust his dad and Poseidon said I love you regardless. I will help you. I will give you a reason to trust me.

One of my favorite things about buddy daddies is that Rei and Kazuki so clearly love each other deeply regardless of what their relationship is

Kazuki is, at his core, a caretaker despite the work he does, and it makes me wonder if him getting involved in being a hit man had to do with something of a vigilante complex—he wanted to help take out bad guys.

He’s also more perceptive and emotionally intelligent than he seems at first. He’s the talker of the pair so that makes sense, but his aggressive take over of Rei’s space was clearly the only way to help. Talking about it or bringing it up wouldn’t work.

And I think what we’re seeing with Rei is beautifully executed in its complexity because not only is he getting to experience the childhood he didn’t get, but he’s caring for a child in a lot of the same ways Kazuki has cared for him. And it’s a lot of fucking work!

What struck me immediately was how gentle Rei was with Miri—he never got angry at her tantrums or really reacts badly to her being a child. I think now that would have a lot to do with how MUCH Kazuki has modeled caretaking. Rei was paying attention this whole time (maybe in a tiger eyeing their zookeeper kinda way) and absorbing. He adapts quickly and mirrors Kazuki.

And you could see in the beginning too that he REALLY wanted something to care for—I don’t think the cat was the first critter he brought home. Miri is his first opportunity to care FOR somebody. And sure he cares about Kazuki in this own traumatized way but to realize what a labor of love it is to care for someone helpless and lost with such unconditional patience???

To REALIZE you are loved, actually? And to now have the stage set for you to recognize what it is to feel and receive love ?!?
