These Marine branded cigars have me asking questions about the One Piece Verse tobacco industry that are literally never going to be answered
does the world government own tobacco farms??? factories???? how the hell does this work that they produce goods instead of just fighting and regulating stuff???
I guess they have to procure uniforms and rations, and cigarettes were historically part of military rations so it makes a certain amount of sense
But where do THOSE SPECIFIC CIGARS come from??? Do they have a deal with individual farms like they did with the cute milk girl from the chapter title comics???? Are they individually wrapped or is there a factory and industrialized cigar prodiction somewhere? Fishman Island has a candy factory so there's precedent for this I guess???
Also how many cigars does Smoker individually go through and how much of the military budget is spent keeping his arm holsters stocked up so he can be dramatic lmaooooo

I keep going back and forth in my mind on whether or not they should keep the story a tradegy and what they will do. What my mind keeps coming back to is the quote "all the great stories return to their original form". Which makes me think that they'll keep it a tragic story. But then I think about how the reason it is tragic is because Morpheus doesn't see himself as capable of change. So what better way to prove him wrong than the idea that stories can grow and change?
Idk what they'll do. I'm sure it'll be amazing either way.
i mean this story is absolutely full of unreliable narrators, the returning to their original form is a dream quote, which says a lot about him as a person, not necessarily anything about neil gaiman
but yeah, i mean. i like well written tragedies, because well written tragedies are one of the best devices for a story about hope, and i think that's what this is
one of the reasons i love hadestown as a story is it specifically calls this out and gets meta with it, but in any tragedy - it's about catharsis, you know?
there's something important in that rock bottom moment, and in experiencing that as a collective. catharsis is an ancient greek word, from the origin of theatre, we're talking plays, things that were experienced by a large audience. ancient greek plays actually used to be short so you could watch a whole bunch of them in a row during festivals to dionysus, it was a whole big Thing
it comes from the word meaning cleansing, and the ancient greeks believed there was something important to that, to watching something terrible happen in a safe space, where it's not real, where you know the actors are fine, and where hundreds of other people are crying with you - you feel for these characters and that sadness is a great emotional release
and i think that's true, it's certainly something i feel with well written tragedies. but i don't think that's all there is to it
there's an instinct shared by absolutely everybody who watches tragedies, something i honestly think is incredible but somehow is universal, and that's that gut feeling that hooks you and goes no this has to turn out right this time
look at what's happening just on this blog today, i'm getting so many responses of people going no, we get another shot, he has to make it this time, this has to be okay, because this isn't right
and i'm serious about not knowing which way this'll fall and being fine with either way, i've just ended up being the tragedy advocate today because everyone else is doing the above and i like it both ways
but it's that instinct that's important. because it's not just something that happens when you don't know the ending. you could have a tragedy in a movie that you have on dvd, and you've watched it 50 times over or more, to the point where you could quote every line. and there will still be that part of you going maybe this time. maybe this time it'll work
stories with happy endings can certainly be inspiring, to the right person, at the right time. but when you're in a really tough spot there's no guarantee your life will turn out like the character's. maybe you don't get as lucky, maybe you get the worst case scenario, and then what? it's hard to fight that on your own
but a tragedy takes you to that worst case scenario. it tells you this is a situation where there is absolutely no way out. and even if you believed there was no way out already, suddenly you find that part of yourself going wait, no, there was a way out, why didn't you take it? if you just had another chance, you'd take it. this wouldn't play out the same way. and if it did, i'd try again. i'd try as many times as i'm willing to watch this story, because i'm never going to accept that this was inevitable
tragedies force the audience to confront that in their darkest moments, they will still fight for things to be better, even when they know everything is lost. and i think in a story about depression, that's really important
(and yeah, the theme of sandman is to keep living you have to keep changing, and to keep changing you have to keep living. but there are so many other characters in this story who embody that, who are there to set an example when an example is needed. look at how popular hob's gotten just from half an episode appearance. and yeah that's partially for shippy reasons, but also he's one of the biggest carriers of the hopeful message, and people have gotten that loud and clear)
so like. if they change it, which will probably end up being along the lines of the retirement au some of the fandom have got going on, i'm absolutely down for that, and i think it will still be a beautiful and meaningful story
and i'm not arguing with all the people going no, we get a retry, we have to fix this, because it's important that they're doing that! that's the whole point! but the fact that they are also means this story's done its job

Hello! Just wanted to say I love your blog and all the analysis you do. Generally I don't go really deep into the technicalities of any shows I watch, but your way of writing makes it's so interesting to read it. Thanks for all the analysis posts you do.
I also come with a question, not sure if you have answered it before as I have started following only recently. I generally don't know anything about the actors/celebrities much and I am not interested also. But I have read some actors related posts on your blog, which were quite insightful and entertaining. Quite a few times you and few other blogs have mentioned something like "xyz actor says he will not do any more BLs" or "he doesn't need to do BLs" or "we are lucky he is even doing BLs". I don't remember the actors names now, but if my memory is correct they were mostly about Thai actors.
I also noticed in "War of y" they showed that generally directors who do big projects look down at BLs as not serious work or treat BL directors badly.
So my questions are 1. Does doing a BL, in anyway looked down on in the Thai entertainment industry? 2. Is it because of the fan service they have to do? 3. Generally actors should be open to all kind of roles, I find it wierd that few actors say such things like I will not do anymore BLs. Then why did they do it in the first place. 4. Does it happen in Western industry too?
Sorry for the long ask, just was curious about this part of the BL industry.
Have a good day.
Thank you for saying such nice things!
Tumblr media
1. Does doing a BL, in anyway looked down on in the Thai entertainment industry?
Seems like.
2. Is it because of the fan service they have to do?
Probably.
3. Generally actors should be open to all kind of roles, I find it weird that few actors say such things like I will not do anymore BLs. Then why did they do it in the first place.
Work is work.
4. Does it happen in Western industry too?
Oh yes.
I have an actor friend (who shall remain nameless) who is pretty darn open about the fact that he takes the junk work (the stuff that doesn’t interest him but pays super well like, oh I don’t know, tent pole comic book movie de jour) so that he can do the indie stuff he’s really enjoys. There are authors who write in their bigger more popular universe, but really enjoy the obscure side passion project more. Bands who play the hits because they have to, not because they actually still enjoy them.
Entertainment is the same as any other kind of work, shitty at least some of the time.
Some actors don’t care if they are pigeonholed, others really chafe against it. It’s usually some kind of ego thing. It’s usually appearance related. They boys are also real young and often stupid in not guarding their tongues. Never say never in the ET industry.
Here’s:

Thank you for answering my MikoRei Genghis Khan ask. That was pretty deep and got into character analysis which is always amazing when it comes from you (I love the meta stuff on this blog). I did wonder why your answer is serious and realized I failed to mention to watch the song's official music video (cause I thought MikoRei as the characters on that would be amusing).
...That's what I get for picking a random lyrics video over the official one XD But now that I have watched the official music video I am absolutely imagining Supervillian Munakata who at last has his nemesis Mikoto in his grasp and suddenly realizes that he can't kill Mikoto because they've had so many good times together. Munakata has a secret underground lair full of secret (ninja) police, where he quietly plots to take over the world so that he can fill it with order. This causes him to clash with Secret Agent Mikoto, who doesn't really care much about the secret agent thing but Kusanagi makes him do it in order to make some cash. Mikoto wasn't all that interested either way until he and Munakata clash for the first time and he realizes that he really enjoys foiling Munakata specifically so he starts taking a lot more interest in any mission that involves Munakata.
Unfortunately one day Mikoto falls asleep on the wrong bench and Munakata is at last able to capture him, tying Mikoto down to a table and preparing his Death Ray to finally rid himself of this bothersome person. Unfortunately for Munakata at just this moment his end-of-day alarm goes off and therefore he must head home, he has an image to keep up as a normal politician's son who has a normal life and a normal family. Mikoto could totally escape while Munakata's gone but actually the metal table's kinda comfy and he's all alone, do you know how long it's been since he got a really good nap with absolutely no one bothering him. As he sits at home doing a puzzle Munakata finds himself thinking once more of his nemesis, who he absolutely hates more than anything and yet...Munakata wonders if Mikoto is perhaps thinking of him too.
The next day Munakata returns to finally defeat Mikoto once and for all, yet when the time comes he can't seem to press the kill button and instead he 'accidentally' presses the release button. Mikoto yawns and sits up like about time, Munakata is all go on Suoh you may leave for the time being. Mikoto shrugs and is like nah, I'm comfy here. Munakata is surprised that Mikoto does not immediately intend to flee and Mikoto figures he can kick Munakata's ass later, right now he's hungry and wants breakfast, telling Munakata to order him a pizza. Munakata sighs fondly as he notes that pizza is not suitable for breakfast, ordering them both some pancakes and tea as he finds himself thinking that perhaps this relationship is more than he had hoped for after all.

omg i think im so out of loop (never check any naruto blog aside from ones ive followed tbh for the past 2 years lmao) that i didnt know people have pointed out the similarities between vaderkin and tobito?? damn i thought i was all alone LOL 😭 (psss id be more than willing of course to listen to your take on their similarities and differences)
hi there! so i think others have done this extensively, i usually find such jokes / mini "thought pieces" on reddit (you can try r/naruto or r/dankruto and search relevant keywords) or youtube comment sections, and especially the YT vid from Death Battle, although other (smaller) creators have also posted (more serious) video essays about Obito, where Anakin / Darth Vader has been mentioned as a parallel to Obito's character :)
unfortunately i can't remember the exact video & all the information is a bit scattered, even in my brain lol, so the best i can do is point u to some sources 🥲
for instance, there are many YT video essays & even reddit posts on Obito's character & how misunderstood he is, like Swagkage's "Dissecting Obito Uchiha", "How Strong is Obito?", "Leave Obito Alone" (lol)
i'm not sure i can ever make a post listing all their similarities, esp when the Death Battle vid has already pretty much done that, and more comprehensively than any comment / reddit post at that, haha
you can also check their wiki for a detailed breakdown of the vid, but perhaps go straight to the Trivia section to see a list of their many similarities! :D
(of course as with all sources, there are some things i disagree with, for instance DB lists Obito as having "less combat experience" than Vader, but we actually don't know what Obito does during all those nigh 20 years that he was living as "Nobody" / "The Masked Man" / Tobi, i mean he could've been training and participating in duels, espionage, skirmishes, battles, etc., i mean he was the secret leader of the Akatsuki, the real Fourth Mizukage of Mist/Kiri, also basically the real leader of Land of Rain too ("Amekage" if you will?) since he is the reason Pain & Konan were able to overthrow Hanzō and the two take orders from him even if they are not loyal to him, so there could've been countless of combat / military and political missions he was involved in that happened "offscreen", and add to all that the fact he was a child soldier starting from around age 9 (when he became a genin and began taking on missions) and that, of course, he was a main player (war criminal! lol) as both fighter and strategist and military commander in Narutoverse's Fourth World War—but hey, the whole point of fandom & media is that there will also be multiple interpretations, so i see no point in "nitpicking" a fictional fight analysis lol)
maybe something new i can add is the meta parallel of how, in real life, vader's identity reveal was a plot twist that shook the whole of star wars fandom and beyond, shocking audiences & remaining iconic to this day
similarly, though i wasn't there (in the fandom or following the anime), at the time, when obito was revealed to be The Masked Man ("Tobi") in the anime, apparently sooo many streaming sites straight up broke down due to the sheer number of people immediately going to see the episode (guess there aren't that many manga readers compared to anime haha)
so yeah, vader broke cinema (insert martin scorsese meme), and obito broke the internet, quite literally 🤣
and these are just accounts from english speakers, who knows how much potentially crazier things got on chinese & japanese & other non-english sites lol
i might add some stuff if i have the energy to organize my thoughts more later on, sorry if this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but i hope the links & sources above can be helpful to you! :)

no okay but honestly, here are some ways in which to actually gain traction and interaction on blogs,
make things readily accessible ,  especially if you’re just starting out or joining a new fandom ,  make sure that you have your rules / about / dossier / info / whatever other information that is needed front and center and easy to find on your blog.
as bad as it sounds, sometimes it helps to think in terms of branding ,  what do you want people to think / see when they come to your blog? are you a Serious Writer? big on aesthetics? friendly and approachable? poke around your blog every once in awhile and look through your recent posts and see if that’s how you want to come across ( there isn’t a right or wrong way to do this, but everyone has different things to appeal to them and that they want to project )
although there’s no rule of thumb for what to have / not have in my opinion, i will say that have some writing within the first 3-5 posts when looking at your blog. if you’re just starting out and haven’t written with anyone yet, write up a quick headcanon or meta post. it gives people a sense of how you write your character and what your writing style is like.
interact with people’s posts ,  this is probably the best and most important one. like peoples’ posts, comment on them --- it not only makes your url and presence a bit more known to people, but it also creates a sense of familiarity and safety and a sense that you know this person. also, people put a lot of effort into their headcanons and such, people like to have them recognized.
reblog memes, post open starters, or post starter calls / plotting calls.  it makes it easy for people to reach out first for interactions, and if your blog is brand-spankin-new, it capitalizes on the !!!! feeling of someone finding your blog and wanting to write with you.
send other people memes ,  ( maybe non-shippy to start off ) even if you have 0 intention of turning it into a thread, send them a meme. it lets them know that you’re ready and willing to start thinking about some interactions, and it gives you a sense of how your characters could interact. bonus: you can then turn that meme into a thread.
respond to other people’s opens ,  if other people post opens, they want people to respond to them. if you’re mutuals, that means they’re okay with you responding to that starter.
check your own anxiety ,  figure out what works for you about how to navigate things. we all have anxiety and we’re all terrified of bad experiences and rejection and not being good enough --- but if we’re all out here letting those own fears be a barrier to us interacting with one another, no one will interact with anyone. ever. and that sucks.
have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously ,  “but you literally just told me to think of my blog as a brand”  and now i’m here to remind you that this should be fun for you, and people are likely more inclined to interact with someone who looks like they’re genuinely enjoying what they do versus someone who comes off as really rigid and who values aesthetics above all else --- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just comes off as intimidating at first.
check your own insecurities / thoughts / intentions / desires ,  and then work through them. you’re gonna fail a little. that really awesome blog might not interact with you, but that doesn’t mean shit in the long run. i like to try and find my core belief and intention about following blogs, and then go from there. sometimes that intention is “i really want to write with this person i think we could do great things” sometimes its “this character is so cool and i just want to read the writing and threads here” and sometimes honestly its “i just really want to be accepted by this person with perceived popularity” whatever that intention is behind craving that interaction, a lot of time it’s going to bleed into how you perceive yourself and others. and a lot of times, those perceptions aren’t ultimately truthful.
be gentle ,  with yourself and with others. not everyone is going to have the energy to always approach you first and carry the weight of plotting / flailing / interacting, and you’re not always going to have the energy to always approach, flail, or carry the weight of everything. that’s fine! just pinpoint and remember the things that matter to you about this hobby and be kind to yourself and others when things get hard. because they will. and that’s okay.

Hi! I'm really new to the Berserk fandom (tbh I haven't yet read the manga) but I've read some of your Golden Age Analysis posts and they're brilliant! They're so articulate, well worded and very insightful, especially wrt Griffith, and I really appreciate all the thought and work you've put into each of your meta posts. I feel like I have a much better understanding of Berserk, its themes, and especially Griffith, thanks to you and a few other meta blogs that I've encountered. Reading through your analysis makes me want to dive into Berserk and become a fan! And tbh I already feel like a Griffith fan, I've grown very invested in him, and in Guts and in their relationship, and I really love him as a character. Which in large part is thanks to meta like yours. Because despite initially finding him intriguing, charismatic and extremely sympathetic (especially after the excruciating torture he endures), I didn't actually understand him, nor did I know what his true motives were, and all of the misconceptions about his character only made it more difficult.
Sorry, I know I'm rambling, but basically I just want to say that I really really love your blog, it's awesome! 💙💙💙
You warm the cockles of my cold, cold heart. Thank you.
Also, I can't recommend Berserk enough. It would be difficult for me to articulate how much I love it and how much it means to me.
(I say this, but if you have serious triggers I would be careful because if there's a horrible thing that can happen it will happen in Berserk and usually in detail. )

Tag Guide
Because I don't want to use tags that actually exist while still being able to find what I'm looking for. I understand this can be confusing. I'll try to keep this updated.
#saving this for future reference: A Post I thought might be helpful either immediately or in the future
#i did a thing: I've made an addition to the post that escaped the tags. This is mainly for my searching purposes, but it also denotes stories written based off prompts sometimes, despite the existence of my original content blog >.<
#for your viewing pleasure: these posts contain video/audio content of some sort
#lookit the pretty art: typically fan content, though original works of writing/photos or more traditional "art" may also appear
#lookit that meta: an analysis of fan content, source material, or sometimes irl situations/patterns
#myhero academia: My Hero Academia/Boku No Hero Academia is a great show please talk with me about it
#he's a phantom: Danny Phantom fan content tag
#batfam: fan content centered on Batman, his brood, or Gotham in general
#just ice leaf: fan content centered on the DC Universe in general or the Justice League in particular
#prosthetic fliers: How To Train Your Dragon fan content ((unusually book content may appear))
#rot guard: Rise of the Guardians fan content ((typically just movie content))
#space wizard laser sword: Star Wars, my beloved, you are Science Fantasy not Science Fiction. Your fan content also belongs here
#mcyt/#more than minecraft: minecraft fan content. Typically they're interchangeable considering who's in my orbit, but I try to separate the minecraft youtuber and general minecraft content
#coolio science: not always actual science. Sometimes just something that's been treated overserious and scientifically, because I think I'm funny
#summer linguistics: I'm a word nerd. This is my tag for word nerd and looking at the way communication works mechanically
#political shenanigans: I am American. This leads to very biased political coverage certain times, and I understand not everyone wants to see it. This is mainly so you can filter it out if you're uninterested
#serious ones: I use this blog to share anything and everything. Sometimes that's because it's amusing, and sometimes that's because it sounds like an important topic that should be discussed
#stay safe out there: a Post has made a danger Known and now I wish to pass it along so y'all can avoid it if possible

Time for a Salty Meta Post about Martin!
people who’ve followed this blog for a bit know that spending six hours combing through text for some goddamn sources is my specialty, so i compiled every time jon ever talked about martin’s work in season 1. which for the record, he stopped complaining about all the way back in episode 26, where he was angry that martin of all people got hurt.
things jon gets mad at martin for:
not being able to find records that don’t exist
not being able to find someone based only on a first name
the Dog
not wearing trousers in his off-hours
being the one that got caught up in the jane prentiss thing
mag 004 and mag 012 both have jon taking potshots at martin over research that was proven accurate by outside sources
things jon has never once complained about:
martin not understanding the filing system and just putting stuff away at random
martin being clumsy, constantly ruining things, spilling tea everywhere everyday, etc
martin turning in incompetent, poorly-edited, or badly formatted reports
martin not understanding the terminology used, skills expected, etc., and generally being extremely new to the field
please for the love of god stop making martin the silly bumbling idiot who can’t do anything right just because he doesn’t have a formal education. there’s zero evidence for it in the text, and it’s really weird to act like a 4 year degree would outweigh the *10 years* of job experience he has, not just in academia, but in the institute itself by season one. my boy has worked there longer than ANY of the rest of the main cast. screw you guys.
tl;dr: martin is never once shown to be bad at his job, jon pretty much only ever gets mad at him for the really stupid first impression and also not finding stuff that no one else was able to find either. after martin got hurt, jon talks about his research basically the same way he talks about tim’s or sasha’s work.
fucking proof under the cut:
(i didnt include the s1 finale or martin’s statement bc that’s just...two entire episodes of them talking to each other, but there isn’t really any notable Martin Complaints in either of them imo)
I swear, if he’s brought another dog in here, I’m going to peel him.
[pre-launch trailer]
.
Well, technically three, but I don’t count Martin as he’s unlikely to contribute anything but delays.
[...] Alongside this Tim, Sasha and, yes, I suppose, Martin will be doing some supplementary investigation to see what details may be missing from what we have.
[MAG001 Anglerfish]
.
Martin couldn’t find any records of Ex Altiora as a title in existent catalogues of esoteric or similar literature, so I assigned Sasha to double-check. Still nothing.
[MAG004 Pageturner]
.
I had Martin conduct a follow-up interview with Mr. Woodward last week, but it was unenlightening. Apparently there have been no further bags at number 93 and in the intervening years he has largely discounted many of the stranger aspects of his experience. I wasn’t expecting much, as time generally makes people inclined to forget what they would rather not believe, but at least it got Martin out of the Institute for an afternoon, which is always a welcome relief.
[MAG005 Thrown Away]
.
Martin was unable to find the exact date the original house was built but the earliest records he could find list it as being bought by Walter Fielding in 1891.
[...]
We cannot prove any connection, but Martin unearthed a report on an Agnes Montague, who was found dead in her Sheffield flat on the evening of November 23rd 2006, the same day Mr. Lensik claims to have uprooted the tree.
[MAG008 Burned Out]
.
According to Martin, who was here when they took this statement, it was at this point in writing that Mr. Herbert announced he needed some sleep before continuing. He was shown to the break room where he went to sleep on the couch. He did not awaken; unfortunately succumbing to the lung cancer right there. Martin says the staff had been aware of how serious Mr. Herbert’s condition was, and had advised him to seek medical aid prior to giving his statement, but were told rather bluntly by the old man that he would not wait another second to state his case. I can’t decide whether this lends more or less credibility to his tale.
[MAG010 Vampire Killer]
.
“Veepalach” might also be a mishearing of the Polish word “wypalać”, according to Martin, which means to cauterize or brand. Admittedly, if Martin speaks Polish in the same way he “speaks Latin,” then he might be talking nonsense again, but I’ve looked it up and it appears to check out.
[MAG012 First Aid]
.
I sent Martin to look into this ‘Angela’ character - not that I want him to get chopped up, of course, but someone had to. Apparently, he spent three days looking into every woman named Angela in Bexley over the age of 50. He could not find anyone that matches the admittedly vague description given here, though he informs me that he had some very pleasant chats about jigsaws. Useless ass.
[MAG014 Piecemeal]
.
Martin declined to help with this investigation as he’s “a bit claustrophobic”
[MAG015 Lost John’s Cave]
.
There simply aren’t enough details given in this statement to actually investigate, short of Martin confirming that Mr. Vittery did indeed live at the addresses he provided.
[MAG016 Arachnophobia]
.
Oh, he’s off sick this week. Stomach problems, I think.
Blessed relief if you ask me.
[...]
I asked Martin to try and hunt down Mr. Adekoya himself for a follow-up, but have been informed that he passed away in 2006.
[MAG017 The Boneturner’s Tale]
.
MARTIN
Well, I need to tell someone what happened, and you can vouch for the soundness of my mind, can’t you?
ARCHIVIST
That is beside the point.
[MAG022 Colony]
.
Martin! Good lord man, if you’re going to be staying in the Archives, at least have the decency to put some trousers on!
[MAG023 Schwartzwald]
.
Martin found one other thing while combing through police reports for the Hither Green area. About a month after this statement was given, on May 15th, 2015, police were called out to once again investigate the chapel.
[MAG025 Growing Dark]
.
I know, but it would have to have been Martin, wouldn’t it? I mean, anything goes wrong around here, it always seems to happen to him. Anyway, we’re getting off topic. Why didn’t you report this?
[MAG026 A Distortion]
.
Martin made contact with the son, Marcus McKenzie, but he declined to talk to us, saying that he’d “already made his statement.”
[MAG027 A Sturdy Lock]
.
Tim and Martin had a bit more luck investigating Tom Haan, though only really enough to confirm that he seems to have completely vanished following his departure from Aver Meats on the 12th of July.
[MAG030 Killing Floor]
.
Martin’s research would seem to indicate the place employed a reasonable number of international staff they preferred to keep off the books
[...]
TIM
Ah well, that’s actually what he was asking, huh! Um, apparently Martin, uh, took delivery of a couple of items last week addressed to you. Did he not mention it?
ARCHIVIST
No, he… Oh, yes, actually. I completely forgot. He said he put it in my desk drawer, hold on.

I haven’t blogged about this in a while, because it’s been a while since it was relevant, but it still bugs me that certain fans were so adamant that SOMEONE, be it Sassy, Keeley, Nora, or Ted be angry that Rebecca is dating Sam.
This is not a pro-Sam/Rebecca post, per se.  I acknowledge that a lot of fans have serious ethical concerns about the pairing.  But this is about the specific expectation that Rebecca get attacked for being in love with someone that fans disapprove of.
And I mean ATTACKED.  If you read some of the meta at the time, especially on twitter, they were basically equating Rebecca with fucking Mary Kay LaTournieu and wanted everyone to react accordingly.
Here’s the thing.  21 is young, yes.  But it’s still an adult.  In the United States, Sam would be old enough to vote, to drink, and to enlist in the military.  I don’t entirely know about the UK ages, but in general, the UK age requirements seem to be lower than ours on average.
If Sam is old enough to kill people for my country, he’s old enough to decide his own goddamn sexual partner.  Even if she’s old enough to be his mother.
And here’s the thing: a lot of relationships are inherently unequal in some form or other.  One partner often has more money.  Or is older.  Or has more experience.  That’s why there are often laws to protect the poorer spouse in divorce or a widow whose been excluded from a will.   Honestly, I think it’s pretty rare to find a situation where a husband and wife are 100% equal in every aspect.
That doesn’t mean the poorer, younger, or weaker partner is incapable of consent.  It doesn’t make the relationship inherently abusive.  It CAN be a problem, or a red flag, but it isn’t always.  It depends on the people involved.
The workplace element is a bit more serious, in my opinion.  Rebecca owns Sam’s team.  She could do a lot of damage to his career.  We’ve seen what she can do, when we look at her sabotage of Ted, or when she sent Jamie away.  There are serious ethical concerns here.
That said.  It’s not illegal.  This isn’t a situation like a hypothetical Ted-Sharon hookup, where Sharon would (rightfully) lose her license.  Rebecca is in no danger of losing the team if the relationship became public.
There are risks, of course.  If she and Sam break up, and Sam can prove that she retaliated against him, then a lawsuit is pretty guaranteed.  She’d get savaged by the media, either way.  It would be a ghastly experience.
It’s probably worth noting that a lot of these risks, both of abuse of power and negative consequence, apply to Rebecca and Ted too.  Especially since she actually HAS used her position and power against him.
But honestly, this isn’t even really about the ethics of the pairing.  I’m not judging folks who like it or dislike it.  We’re talking about the characters here.
Sassy and Nora are not in the sports world.  Their concern is Rebecca’s happiness, period.  They want her to be happy.  And while Nora has a crush on Sam, she’s pretty sensible and realistic.  She doesn’t have any illusions or expectations about a romance with Sam herself.  She admires Rebecca as a role model, and this just becomes a part of that.
Keeley’s in a more interesting position, because as a PR person, she is aware of some of the risks.  And she does, at one point, ask if Rebecca’s breaking up with Sam because of the press.  But she’s a newcomer to this side of the sports world.  She’s not a lawyer so the lawsuit potential isn’t going to her.  And again, it’s not illegal.  So even a lawyer would probably look at the situation and go “Oh my god, this is such a bad idea, but it’s your choice.”  (Honestly, I’d be surprised if Rebecca’s lawyers made it through season one without some kind of aneurysm.)
But in the end, Keeley loves Rebecca.  Her first concern is always going to be Rebecca.  She can and has called Rebecca out when Rebecca crossed the line, but it seems reasonable to me that she doesn’t think Rebecca’s crossed the line yet.
Finally, Ted.  Ted is in the most conflicted position here.  And it’s understandable that he’s more ambivalent.  Sam is one of his players, and one that he’s particularly close to.  He’s been looking out for Sam since day one, and has been particularly steering and supporting Sam as a leader-figure in the team for the entire season.  And regardless of whether we interpret his bond with Rebecca as romantic or not, they’re very close.  They have a deep understanding of each other.
Ted is a coach, he’s been in the sports world for his entire adult life as far as we know.  He’s going to have a much better appreciation of the ethical concerns here than the others.
But Ted is also seriously conflict-avoidant.  And that’s been shown in sharp relief in season two.  He loves Sam and he loves Rebecca, and he’s going to trust that they’ll make it work.  And well, as we’ve seen with Beard, his style isn’t so much to SAY “this is a bad idea” so much as to just try to be there and available to provide support and a safe place if and when things go wrong.
Do you remember that utterly bizarre week right before episode 11 dropped, when so many early screeners SLAMMED the episode?  I’m the sort who looks for every spoiler I can find, so I saw a LOT of those comments.  And the scene they had the biggest problem with, was Ted and Rebecca in his office.  I saw so many people whine that we waited so long for a real Ted and Rebecca scene and it was about Ted “cheerleading” for Rebecca and Sam.
And that made me realize that this wasn’t about Ted/Keeley/Sassy/Nora as characters.  This wasn’t even about “Tedbecca” as a ship, necessarily.  Because that scene was probably the most “Tedbecca” scene we’d gotten in ages.  The parallels in No Weddings were great, but there wasn’t much direct interaction.  But here we had Ted giving Rebecca unconditional, unwavering support.  We had Ted looking visibly ambivalent about her relationship, but burying that so that he could be what she needs.
What’s more romantic than that?
And to be fair, I think most “Tedbecca” fans saw it the same way.  But this specific handful of fans weren’t interested in a genuinely romantic moment.  They wanted to see Rebecca PUNISHED for making the wrong choice.
That’s why they were so fixated on Ted’s reaction.  (And before him, Nora’s.  Many of these fans LOVED the idea of Nora feeling betrayed by Rebecca dating Sam.)  Let’s set aside the fact that Ted is not an aggressive or possessive person at all.  Or that it would actually be really gross and creepy if he lashed out at her out of jealousy.  That part doesn’t matter.
I do think it would be nice if the show did take some time to discuss the ethical concerns about what Rebecca and Sam are doing, but the fans’ expectations were bordering on some kind of humiliation kink.  And if that’s what you’re into, fine, AO3 is right there.  But I don’t think you’re going to get it from the show itself.

So 10.14 (The Executioner’s Song) has been analyzed to death, but we finally hit that episode last night in meta club and I’m halfway alive so I’m throwing two whole thoughts onto my blog.
The Mark of Cain arc as a whole has spent a lot of time doing callbacks to season four, both visually and thematically.  We’re back in hell with Dean, we’re visiting the basement (9.13, 9.23, 10.09), we’re looking at torture and violence and death.
10.10 had this lovely callback to Dean torturing
Tumblr media
Dean’s back in the basement, torturing, because they need answers.
And then we hit 10.14.  Dean’s been struggling for months with the time he spent as a demon, he’s got a knife in his hand because he said yes and made a deal, cause he was in a bad place and it seemed like a way out. And oh he doesn’t want to admit it, but he liked how it felt the first time he used that Blade on someone else. I tortured souls and I liked it, I like the disease.
We come to a point of conflict - the worst demon you’ve heard of, the demon who remade Dean into something Else, is locked in a room inside of a devil’s trap, waiting. How much did you learn from me boy, can you best the master of the craft (torture from Alastair, murder from Cain).
There’s a beat outside the door, while Dean talks it out. Then, it was “You ask me to open that door and walk through it, you will not like what walks back out.”
Now, “I need you three out here to take out whatever comes out of there. And I'm serious. I mean whatever comes out.”
He knows that by stepping into that room, going across the line into the demon trap, he’s going to be confronting his own humanity and how much he’s lost, what amount of darkness is in his soul. Monster or hunter, Dean, which one? It’s a fight, back and forth.
"Is that all you’ve got?”
“This is weaker than I expect from you with the Blade, I think you can do better.”
The master gains the upper hand.
Tumblr media
When the fight is over, Dean is broken. Not a monster, not yet. He did what he had to do (and oh how I hate that phrase through the years of this show, Dean selling his soul, Sam drinking blood, Cas fighting Raphael, letting Gadreel into Sam, taking another angel’s grace, setting Lester up to die to find Dean... everything that goes into the spell to break the Mark, and Dean’s lowest point of standing in front of Sam with a scythe in his hand knowing it’s what he must do to save the world from himself...)  Now he has to live with the damage, with the knowledge that he is not strong enough to face what comes next (he won’t be able to save Sam, he won’t be able to resist the Mark).
Castiel, on the other hand, is getting visual callbacks to s5 and s6, and while I know exactly where s10 and the whole damn show goes, from a “I’m deliberately analyzing this season without overlying the knowledge of what comes later” standpoint it makes me nervous.
The thing that is utterly frustrating is knowing that this is where the plot derails.  I can take all of s10 to this point and draw a straight path in one specific direction, I can even make a solid interpretation for “and it is written, the river shall end at the source.”  And most of the visual and metaphorical and parallel dictionary I’ve spent the last... five months? building is about to be thrown from a very tall window. I don’t know where the Castiel visual references were going to go. I don’t know how the hell callbacks and s4 parallels would have played out in a world where s10 was actually the finale of the show.

FULL REVIEWS: “Enchanting Grom Fright”
The hype for this episode was unreal. We got the crew telling us that we weren’t ready on social media. It was a madhouse. To think that the little ship that could would have this big a leap in canon is unreal. Let’s just get to it.
Tumblr media
The cold open starts with Luz trying to find more glyphs in her off time. I thinks it really shows her development so far. Now she’s willing to do the work to figure out her kind of magic, as oppose to say episode two where she just wanted to be great because she was “chosen.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“My glyph skills are blossoming”
Tumblr media
But then reality ensues...
Using the portal to let the wifi signal into The Owl House is not the dumbest reason I’ve heard to open an interdimensional portal between worlds but it is one of the most mundane. SOMEHOW, Luz can still receive texts from her mom FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Not that it makes too much of a difference since Luz barely answers them.
As much fun as it is to focus on the magic and the shipping and the friendship and the curse, Luz still knows that she’s still lying to her mom. The guilt is there, but luckily being a main character keeps her too busy to think about it.
Tumblr media
“Luz, time to fill that darling head of yours with...huuh huuh huuh HAKKK, mmm, mmm, mmh, delicious knowledge.”
Never change, Hooty.
Tumblr media
It’s that time of year again that Luz doesn’t know about yet, Grom: The Boiling Isles’ weird version of prom. Every fantasy world has one.
Tumblr media
*hiss*
Amity bumps into Luz, and I know this is going to sound weird, but I really like Amity’s “Watch it, nitwit.” Amity’s character has changed and developed from our perspective which is the perspective of Luz and The Owl House fam. But she’s not a completely different character. Amity still has a bit of a temper and gets agitated easily. It makes sense to me and I’m glad I haven’t found anyone be like “Hey if Amity is nicer, why did she get mad when she bumped into someone?”
Amity is nicer to Luz and co. because she’s gotten to know Luz and co. You don’t treat everyone in your life the same. Amity is one of those people that you need to defrost with first. Belief is backed up by experience and so are people’s personas. (Not that persona. I’m being serious here.) Because of Amity’s experiences, she’s believed that in order to survive she has to put people at arm’s length, then when she gets to know you, she’ll decide if she wants to let you in or not. So I guess that means that based on her interactions with Luz, Amity has decided...
You know what? I’ll save that for my Lumity meta.
The popular theory is that Amity was going to put her note in Luz’s locker, hence why she bumped into them. But actually seeing Luz and being announced as grom queen probably made her lose her nerve.
Tumblr media
“Embrace your dreams...”
Amity is announced to be this year’s grom queen. Luz is happy for her before Amity runs in shock and embarrassment. Okay.
Luz discovers the gym’s weapons cache (not a thing I thought I would ever type) and Amity explains grom. Since Luz is from the human world and all that.
Grom is a monster that lives under the school and needs to be defeated every year so it doesn’t invade the town. It’s a classic shape-shifting fear monster. Odd are I have (and so have you) at least seen three or four of these in our lives already. Amity doesn’t want to show the entire school her greatest fear, especially since she already knows what it is. Luz suggest talking to Bump and Amity says she’ll try.
Tumblr media
Another scene of Eda and King laughing and mocking Luz. Because I liked it so much the first time.
Eda gets dressed up herself because she’s volunteered to chaperone grom. Luz tells her that Amity is grom queen but wishes that she could take her place. We get...you know and Luz walks off.
Tumblr media
“I think we should kiss to ease the tension.”
Luz randomly meets up with Amity in the woods because I guess Amity had the same idea to take a walk to clear her head. Whatever. Amity tells Luz that Bump wasn’t going to change his mind unless Amity found a replacement. Luz volunteers because...she’s Luz, friend to all.
Except maybe that spider.

Top 10 Anime Betrayals
The Blight Siblings try to help Luz train against grom only for Eda to find out about their little plan. Here’s where we find out why Eda volunteered to chaperone a Hexside event even though she hates that place:
“What’s the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?”
That’s hilarious. To me.
Tumblr media
Luz and Amity have a moment before Luz’s debut and Amity thanks Luz for everything she’s done. They have more adorable banter before Luz takes the stage.
“Wish me luck.”
“Luck.”
I’m guessing that’s not an expression in The Boiling Isles.
Tumblr media
Luz faces Grom and it seems to be going better than everyone predicted until...you know
Tumblr media
“Mija, this would be such a good shot for the trailer.”
Yup, we all predicted this. Luz’s greatest fear is her mom finding out that she’s been lying to her. Luz panics and takes off with Eda and Amity to chase after her.
Eda comes in for the save when Amity bursts in the scene saying “Boy let me tell you what.” She doesn’t really I just like saying that. You know, in my head. I mean, if you heard the way I was saying it out loud you’d probably think it was funny too but you know...text.
Tumblr media
Grom gets a hold of Amity and transforms into her greatest fear. And we see why Amity didn’t want to face Grom in front of the whole school. She didn’t want everyone to see that Amity’s fear is very...emotional. Not physical. She’s not afraid of a giant spider or anything. It’s a little closer to the heart.
Tumblr media
Amity clutching at her dress like a little kid is both the cutest and the saddest thing. This fear of hers is so bad it makes this fourteen year old feel like she’s four. I’m so sure she was about to cry right there. Or maybe that’s me. Could be both.
Luz picks up the note and discovers that Amity was trying to ask somebody out before she was announced as grom queen. Amity was afraid of being rejected. Luz tries to ease her fears by asking her out to grom.
Trying seeing it from Luz’s point of view. She has no idea who Amity wants to ask out. Luz doesn’t even consider that it could be her because again, belief is backed by experience. Luz was considered a weirdo with no friends in the human world. She even said earlier in the episode that she got kicked out of her last school dance for dressing like an otter. Luz has no reason to believe that someone would like her romantically. She would like to. It is a fantasy of hers, but her experience tells her that other people don’t see her that way so she doesn’t consider that Amity wanted to ask Luz out.
I’ll save the rest for another blog post, although I did talk about this last year too.
But since Amity did want to ask Luz out and Luz asked her out instead, Amity’s fears are eased. Grom does what every fear monster does when their target overcomes their fears and says “Screw it, I’m just going to kick your ass!”
And then this happens:
Tumblr media
As a Star vs the Forces of Evil fan, let me just say this is our Blood Moon Ball moment. The moment that the show tells the audience in John Oliver’s voice, “Yup this is the ship we’re doing so strap in folks.”
Luz and Amity work together to combine magic to take down Grom. It also helps that they eased each others’ fears. Luz can’t think about her mom if she’s focused on helping Amity.
Tumblr media
Luz and Amity defeat Grom in a blaze of glory. Luz being Luz, decides to ask Amity who she wanted to ask out just to see if she would tell you. Amity brushes it off.
Tumblr media
“It doesn’t matter. After all, I already got to dance with the girl I like.”
Everyone celebrates but when Luz gets home she’s more tired than anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe it was Grom, but Luz decides to give her mom a real answer. It’s been tough but it’s also been fun. There are good and bad days. Sometimes she feels like she doesn’t belong. But she has friends. They care about her, she cares about them, and that’s more than enough reason to stay.
THEN THIS SHIT HAPPENS!
Tumblr media
Yeah, the Meteora moment in Star vs the Forces of Evil. The moment where the show went “Never mind that shit. Here comes a complete change in the status quo.”
Someone or something is sending Luz’s mom letters. It’s Luz’s handwriting, but it’s clearly not Luz since she can’t spell her name right. Season one already finished and we still have no idea what this is.
I was all happy a second ago. Now I’m nervous as all hell. It’s a madhouse I tells ya. A madhouse!
Tumblr media
FINAL SCORE: 5 - LOVED IT!
Wow. Just wow. This episode had everything. Jokes, plot, romance, character development, cameos, dancing, girls, MOM(?), crashing on your couch because technically I’m homeless.
Tumblr media
I shipped Lumity before this, but this was the episode that told me that yes it was going to happen. We’re all in.
But it’s not perfect.
Yeah, did any of you noticed that I didn’t even mention the B-plot? I’m going to be honest. The reason is...
I hate it.
I hate the B-plot so much that I skip it every time I watch this episode. I still don’t think Gus is that funny or interesting. Hell, Skara’s mini plot with her date and/or boyfriend was funnier.
But everything else about the episode more than outshines the B-plot so I still give it a five.
Next time we finish up the lumity trilogy next time.
Tumblr media
Dammit I said next time twice.
