I'm not sure if I've seen anyone share AO3 spam comments that have this format so I thought I'd post a screenshot.

I reported it as spam already, and the code that I blocked out isn't even a link, so maybe there's some way to join servers through the discord website with just that? Anyway, the username is also just a guest name, so it's not even linked to an account I could check out if I wanted to.

Perhaps the funniest thing is that this was left on a work that isn't even a fic—it's just some 'body map' type images to show scars, stretch marks, tattoos, etc. on a few characters. Not exactly a 'great story.' 😂

Do NOT follow any instructions, mark them as spam. They are targeting non-archive locked fics exclusively right now. (This was left on one of the only fics I didn't archive lock...)

Anyway, there are probably a lot of messages like this out there but since it has "happened" to me, I will write a little PSA

If you are a writer on Ao3 (or any other site I assume) and a commenter invites you to join their discord server, especially from a guest account, do not join that server.

No matter how much they are trying to flatter you!

Best course of option, in my opinion, report/mark it as spam or delete it and move along with you day.

I'm gonna assume most people are aware of this already, but for those that have never encounters comments like this, please be aware!

pretty sure it's just to promote their website. said website is called like webwriting or smth of the like (will double check when off the clock). idk if it's an actual mod sending the invites or if it's from bots but it looks extremely fishy. 🐟

Just got the most WTF comment I've ever received on Ao3 ever.

It opened up with 'your soul has violated the Terms of Service' and went on to ramble nonsense from there. Obviously I deleted it, but I'd intended to report it as spam first... only to find the spam button wasn't showing up?

Anywho, it's been deleted and the user who sent it blocked since it came from an actual user and not an anon (anon is still being disallowed).

But I'm concerned that there was no option to report as spam? I know the button exists, I've used it before. I can only assume it wasn't showing up because this was a logged in user's comment, but that's still really annoying. :/

I have found a new type of spam comment on *two* of my AO3 Naruto fics this morning and am not impressed.

Anyone else getting some random guest user leaving a comment that says the below:

"I understand that you're really angry right now, but maybe we can approach this from a more constructive point of view. I think it's important to remember that everyone has their own ideas and preferences when it comes to storytelling. While you may not agree with the direction of the story, the author had their own creative vision and it's possible that others may enjoy it. Alternatively, perhaps checking out "Reborn in Naruto As Madara's Grandson" on webnovel might bring you the enjoyable read you're looking for. Remember, everyone has different tastes, so let's keep an open mind!"

It was left as it's own comment, not in response to anything else. Please note the way it's promoting a completely different website and story, unprompted.

Time to report spam - and to once again consider locking all my fics, which will be. A pain. (and is the main reason I haven't done that yet)

ETA: the other comment is similar but subtly different, mainly in that it doesn't mention webnovel and seems to be more of a response to the ABOVE comment since it calls out someone enjoying the fic mentioned in that. Still incredibly weird.

Just got this spam comment on “A Cheesy Situation”:

This fic consists of jokes about sex and cheese. The only vivid images painted are the ones depicting just how bad at sex Castis’ kidnappers are.

sooo not only does this website have bots spamming your ao3 inbox, but it also had the audacity to claim horror is a male led genre when as recently as 2017 horror was the only genre where women had as much speaking roles as men.
