finally posting my oc to cope with mw3... i've had her since november '22, didn't even mention her name to anyone until august lol. i've never had the confidence (or skill) to do this, so i'm thanking all of my mutuals with their wonderful ocs for giving me the strength to do it, even if they don't know it <3

note: despite petra being reader's callsign in bloodsport, it is not intended to be my oc. so far, the only fics that petra properly appears in are desideria and fortuna redux. i know it's confusing and i'm sorry 😭 more of her (and others) in the future!

TRIVIA

The name Mylène can mean "merciful", Scholten refers to a schout (government official that handled administration of justice), and de Ridder means "the knight".

Her callsign Petra means "rock, stone" and is not implying that she's a stony person! She earned her callsign due to her high tolerance and endurance; she's also uniquely durable, often recovering from or withstanding injuries that would leave others in worse condition. It's a bit supernatural, don't worry about it.

Was introduced to drumming by her Uncle Frank when she was little. It's canon to me.

Mylène looks like a carbon copy of her aunt, sans some details like hair and eye color. She's also more well-built than her aunt thanks to being in the military.

Has a bunch of small rituals, habits, and very specific ways of doing things thanks to her OCD – nothing too crazy (she has no choice but to manage these thanks to her career), but you'll start to notice them if you're around her enough.

Has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). She's learned ways to lessen the symptoms and has an IUD that helps immensely, but it's why she still has a decent amount of fat on her body despite working out religiously. (Not projecting my issues shh)

Doesn't date often due to her career and personal reservations. Prefers someone older, though. (I'm not projecting shh x2)

Tattoo One (Hands) I'm not going to lie... originally gave Petra the tattoo (two, actually – she has it on both hands) because I loved Freya's tattoos in GOW and the design is inspired by those. From an in-universe standpoint, it was her first tattoo (age 17) and she just wanted something simple that could be hidden under her gloves to prevent fading. Has to get them touched up every now and then.

Tattoo Two (Right Arm) Full sleeve of willow branches, florals, and butterflies. There's a lot of symbolism in this one. The butterflies represent transformation, hope, and rebirth; the willow branches symbolize a new life, protection, flexibility, and adaptability; the flowers embody anything from growth, joy, transience, hope, love, and death.

Tattoo Three (Left Bicep) Two-headed snake with flowers! I don't think I need to rhapsodize about the florals again, so I'll skip to the snake. Depending on the culture, a two-headed serpent can represent wildly different things. It's a symbol of rebirth and resurrection, with each head representing earth and the underworld. It can symbolize indecision and conflicting ideas. Duality, balance, power, healing, insight, and deeper awareness; snakes were often seen as a spiritual messenger, and the dual nature of a two-headed serpent represents learning from both positive and negative experiences. (if I see any "heehoo konni" comments, I will blow up the sun, this ain't about him babygirls 😔)

Tattoo Four (Left Inner Forearm) Compass with an arrow! The symbolism is pretty obvious, I think... Direction, guidance, and navigation; the compass arrow combines the arrow's representation of direction and forward movement and the compass' symbolism of finding your way and staying on course. Together, it represents the idea that, no matter how far away you are, your arrow will always hit its target – even when losing your way, you'll always be able to overcome adversity and find your way back.

BACKGROUND

Born on June 29, 1990 in the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Hendrik Scholten de Ridder and Johanna Scholten de Ridder, Mylène had a normal – if not privileged, thanks to her family's prominent histories – early childhood. At the age of 3, her brother, Emiel, was born. Known to be a clever, compassionate girl, Mylène took to the "big sister" role with ease.

Her father was a captain from a distinguished military family with the callsign "Chimera", who ascended to the rank of colonel and commanded the Royal Netherlands Army’s special forces unit, the Korps Commandotroepen. Her mother was a medical intelligence analyst for the AIVD and MIVD (then-known as the BVD and MID) with a family history in government and politics.

In the late fall of 1999, when Mylène was only 9 years old, she came home from school and discovered her mother's corpse, having been killed by enemies of her father originally seeking to hold the family for ransom. This event, paired with the traumas he sustained over his years in the military, drove her father to "near insanity" as he became consumed with paranoia and grief. The rest of her and her brother's adolescence was defined by the trauma of her father's abuse; he subjected the siblings to rigorous physical and psychological training in order to mold them into "perfect soldiers" and prevent any further loss.

Despite this, her father was publicly viewed as a war hero. He would often leave the two alone when he was on deployment, forcing Mylène to care for herself and her brother with nothing more than a roof over their heads and grocery money provided. The siblings developed an unbreakable bond during this time that would extend into their adulthoods, rendering them a synergic duo both at home and in the field.

After finishing secondary school at 17, Mylène enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army. She also studied at the University of Amsterdam – taking online classes – and eventually graduated with a BS in Biochemistry. She spent 3 years serving in various military hospitals, clinics, and field units under the 400 Medical Battalion, until she joined selection for the KCT in 2011. She was swiftly recognized for her high tolerance, natural interpersonal skills, and advanced aptitude for MEDINT analysis; she passed selection with top marks, setting several records during the infamous "hell week" exercise.

Mylène operated as a combat medic until August 2013, when she worked with the British SAS's Unit Bravo under the command of Captain John Price. Despite the joint team being greatly reduced in number and separated after a series of heavy artillery attacks from enemy forces, Mylène managed to provide emergency medical care and calm leadership as her party made its way to the rendezvous point that Price's group was defending.

After the joint operation concluded, Price took an interest in her, deciding to train her as a sniper and teach her how to better use her skills in combat. The two quickly developed a close relationship built upon mutual trust and a desire to fight for what's right, regardless of rules or orders. At some point after this, her unflappable nature and composure when faced with challenging conditions earned her the callsign "Petra".

*** By 2014, Mylène was in a several year-long relationship with a National Reserve Corps (NATRES) NCO named Florian Van Aller. On February 14 of that year, he suddenly came to her with an idea that left her speechless: "sharing" her with his unit. Despite his insistence and attempt to pressure her into it, Mylène refused, ending the relationship. They met on base the next day after Florian messaged her claiming to want to apologize – when she came face-to-face with him and his mentor, Captain Jozef Daalmans, she realized what she had been told was a lie.

*** Although the captain's only involvement was restraining her and watching, Mylène felt violated by both men. She was left at the scene, battered and ashamed, until the last person she expected to help found her – Colonel Hendrik Scholten de Ridder. In a rare act that she now describes as "the last time she ever saw her real father," he comforted her and took her to the hospital, where Mylène received treatment for the injuries she sustained in the assault. She never spoke of the incident afterwards, leaving herself, her father, and her attackers as the only people privy to it.

In early 2015, an assault team led by Chimera and Petra on an enemy submarine revealed that there was a traitor within the unit. The entire team, save for Chimera and Petra themselves, was killed onboard the vessel. The traitor was eventually discovered to be Chimera himself, with Petra as the only witness to his admission and subsequent attempt to bury her, and any incriminating evidence, at sea. With her father in the wind and knowing that her word alone wouldn't be enough to implicate him for his crimes, Petra contacted Captain Price, telling him: "You're the only person I can trust."

An unsanctioned operation to capture or kill Chimera was planned by the two, with the help of her brother – now a KCT operative nicknamed "Nightfall" – and Nikolai, a trusted contact of Price's. The small team managed to track the Colonel and his supporters to a base deep in the Alps, where they successfully wiped out the entire group and killed Chimera. After this mission, Petra felt indebted to Price and Nikolai, considering them two of the few people she could trust implicitly.

From then on, Petra lent her services to various humanitarian groups in an effort to provide protection and medical care on missions around the globe. With expertise in frontline trauma and medical care, hostage rescue, asset protection, medical intelligence analysis, chemical warfare, and the training and advising of foreign military units, Petra proved to be an elite operative capable of remaining calm in even the most dire scenarios. She’s been awarded the Military William Order, the Bronze Lion, the Bronze Cross, and the Cross of Merit for both covert and overt operations, establishing herself as a minor legend within the elite commando corps.

However, a little over a year after the unsanctioned operation in the Alps, Petra was captured and imprisoned by Ultranationalist forces. She was regularly tortured during her captivity, often by Vladimir Makarov, whom she now sarcastically describes as "a lovely man."

Sometime in mid-2017, Petra was yet-again assigned to a unit led by Price, tasked with infiltrating and securing an Al-Qatala base located in Kastovia. Another member of the unit was Nightfall, serving as the team's scout sniper. During the mission, while providing overwatch, Nightfall's radio was suddenly cut off. When the rest of the team finally reached his location to investigate, several IEDs planted in the area went off and forced the group to retreat. Petra attempted a rescue, but was prevented from doing so by Price, as it was too dangerous. Demolition teams cleared the area the following day. Once it was safe to extract Nightfall, however, the recovery team found nothing.

With her brother declared dead in absentia, Petra chose to abandon the special forces. She went back to school and earned an MSc in Biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen, refusing to contact any of her former allies so as to avoid being dragged back into the military.

In April 2019, Petra was tracked down in Denmark by Price, who informed her of Vladimir Makarov's plans in Verdansk and urged her to join the SAS team being sent to stop him. After thorough convincing, she agreed to come back for one more mission, seeking revenge against the man that tortured her years ago.

Petra was later handpicked for the task force Price established alongside CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell following the death of General Roman Barkov in November 2019. She was once again sought out by Price – and Nikolai, who was the "final nail in the coffin," according to Price – and convinced to join the team as a commanding officer.

About a month later, Laswell pinpointed the location of a prison in Georgia believed to be used by Al-Qatala to hold POWs. Reconnaissance of the prison confirmed this and the identity of several of the prisoners; Nightfall was identified as one of the POWs. Petra, leading an elite KCT unit, raided the location shortly thereafter, securing the captives, Nightfall, and intel about Al-Qatala's plans.

Between the invasion of Verdansk, Las Almas, and a burgeoning war with Konni group... Petra has fully committed herself to Task Force 141, willing to save the world or die trying.

ET Online: Earlier this week when it was revealed William would be missing his godfather’s memorial service, the Palace told ET that Kate, who underwent abdominal surgery in January, continues to be “doing well.” But with the speculation only intensifying, the Palace released another statement to ET on Thursday.

“We gave guidance two days ago that the Princess of Wales continues to be doing well,” the statement reads. “As we have been clear since our initial statement in January, we shall not be providing a running commentary or providing daily updates.”

Tom Sykes of The Daily Beast: A former royal staffer who still has friends and contacts inside the palace said, “Anyone who expects the palace to suddenly start giving lengthy updates on Kate will be disappointed. The principal aim of her being sequestered is to guard her privacy. I’m sure the press hate it because it is working. There is a really, really small bubble of people who know exactly what is going on.”

Prince William visited a central London synagogue, where Kate had been scheduled to visit on Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 Jan 2024).

Jan Moir on Prince William: One day soon he will be the head of the nation, a focus for national identity, unity and pride. So maybe he should stop behaving like a celebrity flake and reign in that impervious attitude along with his indulgent fondness for obsessive secrecy. If this is a sign of what is to come when he ascends the throne, it is very worrying one.

She has worked hard to erase Nazan Candemir from history, due to her current occupation & the dangers therein. It's not too difficult; there wasn't much to begin with. She doesn't resent her childhood; in fact, she treasures it & the memories that it brought for her, as well as how disciplined she is in her work.

She is incredibly emotional, empathetic to most even as she's attempting to mine them for information. She has always prided herself on being a fair and good listener but never imagined she'd be using this for espionage. This means she has a moral dilemma almost every time she does something — but for her queen's sake, she keeps it under wraps.

During her time abroad, her rural village was captured and her family killed when it was taken control of. In a sense, her love for her country has rotted & she feels as if it abandoned her; where were the defences during these uprisings? Now she's bound & determined to be that defence if it's the last thing she does, just perhaps not for Turkey. Not with her investment in Ethiopian politics, despite her efforts to remain detached. She doesn't want to be hurt again, but puts herself in harm's way.

She discovered her prowess for language by accident. The ability to speak to people she met in the streets in Turkish and be understood made her want to do that across more people. She never thought herself to be "book-smart" but then was taught to read by a patient tutor and never looked back. Now she notates everything, keeping these notes ( and secrets ) in books that she places into sewn places on her bodices. She brought them all with her. It's best to keep them on her person or in her immediate vicinity instead of risking them being left.

Still not afraid to get her hands dirty. Literally. Although a lot of her spying requires being subtle & conversational nuance, she's still enraptured by new things. The simple country person never has left them. Sometimes, she still longs for that life.

She became a bookkeeper to the tutor who taught her how to read. It began as a method to perfect her script. She has since turned that into a way to forge, mimic handwriting, and remember everything as much as possible. She keeps anything Queen Malaika tells her separate from her other books, in a locked & bound leather journal. She also will scribe lettres being dictated to her & so forth.

It does feel like the brony article that dropped yesterday was a pre-planned interview with harry to promote the book, done maybe 1.5-2 weeks ago. It's interesting that that article is buried by their own PR tactics and their exclusive with Roya. ( I think this was alll harry) and further by the release of the article about Kate/Meghan crying. It doesn't seem wise to go after Williams children and then demand a peace talks with harry fully in control the following day.

I don't think harry's gotten the reaction he wanted, not from the general public and certainly not from his family. I think BP has only spoken once during the last week. And that was Roya first article about harry being effectively cut out of the coronation- I think that's true. And I think Royas taken some of whatever conversation she had with that source and plugged it into her latest article to make it appear as though the source is responding back to harry's demands. I don't think this is the case. I think that first roya article freaked harry out and now he's pushing back even more to get what he wants. I don't think it will work which begs the question for harry, is it worth it to go to the coronation and look so separated from your brother and father?? I'm 50/50 on whether or not he will go. But i guarantee you he wanted to attend events throughout the week for it, not just the coronation itself. And he's not going to so I think he's losing on both fronts.

Ideas for the second season of Legends of the Three Caballeros

The Legend of Three Caballeros, I have to admit one of my favorite Disney cartoons that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, that series had a bad fate, because it was not released on Disney channels until it appeared on the Internet three years ago. After that, it was shown at Disney Plus the following year. I expected Lot3c to get a second season two years ago, but it didn’t happen. It will now be streamed to Disney XD in August, and I recommend many to watch this series to get as many views as possible. I thank Matt Danner, many animators and many voice actors for this series which in my opinion was one of the best 2010s series of this era.

Although Lot3c (short for Legend of the Three Caballeros to Know in the Future) has one season and 13 episodes for now, that series had a great story, lots of adventures, socializing, friendships, fighting villains, as well as classic comedies. I know a lot of people won’t like me saying this, but I liked that series more than the Ducktales reboot, but that’s my opinion. If that series gets more support and more viewers, according to Matt Danner, the main creator of this series, we might get a second season. So, what will the second season be like now? I will say the following about that, and you can help me give me your ideas, what you would like to see in the second season, if we get it.

1.Season Jose (Ze) Carioca

As confirmed by Matt Danner, we would get the second season of Lot3c, with the main focus on Jose (Ze) Carioca. The first season was around Donald Duck, the second would probably be around Jose, and the third season around Panchito. What could we see that season?

My opinion is that if Jose gets his season, we could get that the main place for that season will be Brazil, Jose’s habitat. Jose lives in Rio de Janeiro and there we could see everything from carnival, through football to traveling through the Amazon forest. There would also be a part of the focus on Aracuan Bird, since it is also his birthplace in the Amazon.

I have nothing against Eric Bauza, as he is a great voice actor, but for that season he would need someone who can speak Brazilian Portuguese well, certainly speak English, but with a Brazilian accent. Perhaps the voice actor for Jose could be either Mark La Roya or Bernardo De Paula, having previously starred Jose in Mickey Mouse Cartoons and Ducktales. Also, Jose should finally pronounce his name correctly, as it should sound, and not as it has sounded lately and it is not said (Hose), but Jose (Zose). As for the characters that could be in Brazil, I will say in the next part.

2.Characters from Ze Carioca comics

For those who don't know, Ze Carioca has a very good foothold in Brazil, especially in comics where they betray themselves under his name and also Ze has his family and friends and rivals. In a similar way as Donald Duck has his family and friends according to comics in Europe and America, so does Jose Carioca in Brazilian comics. To be honest, I don't know that world that much, nor have I read a lot of comics about them, I mostly learned all that over the internet and by reading some comics, so I have some knowledge about it. Please forgive me for this if I am wrong about the names of Jose's friends and his relatives, as well as about the transcription of their names.

For the second season, if it’s in Brazil, characters from Ze Carioca comics could show up and I’m sure Brazilians would be happy about that. First would be Jose’s friends like Nestor (black crow or bird), Alfonshino (a duck resembling Fethry but a normal duck), Pedrao (an anthropomorphic dog), who could be portrayed there, and they share similar virtues and flaws with Jose and together they entertain and help each other. Donald and Panchito could learn from their friend Jose, how they can have such good friends in their hometowns and keep together, regardless of various changes during their lives.

Next up would be Jose’s rival, Ze Galo (rooster) who sometimes annoys Jose and the two of them are rivals and compete around various things. Not to mention that they clash over the same girl (more on that later). Donald and Panchito would see that Jose's life is not as easy as it seemed and how Jose is a story, because Jose likes to tell his stories in an interesting, romantic and exciting way so as to exaggerate his events, even though those events were not of special significance. They would learn from Ze Galo that Jose is not like that and there might be disappointment, but Donald and Panchito would reconcile with Jose and still be best friends.

Jose's girlfriend Rosihna Maria Vaz (an anthropomorphic species of chicken) who is like Daisy Duck who is a real beauty and the daughter of a rich man (Rocha Vaz). Jose has problems with Rosinha, even though he used to be on good terms with her and Donald would certainly help Jose do that to impress the girl, much like Donald did to Daisy. Let's face it, I'm not forcing Jose to be with Rosinha, Jose may be with Panchito and Donald, as love affairs, but I mentioned Rosihna because she often appears in Brazilian comics. Also, she’s not bad, I’d love for Daisy and she to meet and be best friends. If Donald and Jose can, so can the two of them.

Also, some of Jose's relatives could be present in that series, so that Donald and Panchito would know that Jose has a large family, and Donald would show even more solidarity with him, because Donald also has a lot of relatives. And I would certainly mention the most important members of Jose's family, Jose's nephews Zico and Zeca Carioca, but in the next part.

3. Donald and Jose's nephews (Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck and Zico and Zeca Carioca)

Given that Jose has his nephews who are often present in Brazilian comics, but unlike Donald, Jose sometimes treats his nephews badly. He is not an awful uncle, as awful as he is, but sometimes he allows his nephews to do what they want, even when they should not work according to their age. Jose could learn from Donald how to be a great uncle, because Donald can be good with children (his nephews, also Donald good with Daisy’s nieces, April, May and June Duck). If you could see how well Donald treats Jose's nephews, maybe Jose would be ashamed and learn from Donald how to be a great parent. It could be one good episode around parenting business, because Jose is the only official parent who adopted Zico and Zeca. If Zico and Zeca could show up, Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck could also show up. I know, that the original plan was for Donald’s nephews to be Donald’s assistants in Lot3c, but Danner decided to have Daisy’s nieces instead and it’s not a mistake to use them the right way and I liked that. But it is a pity that HDL and AMJ did not appear together, where we would see their rivalry, but also the friendship between the two groups of triplets, it would be interesting and comical to watch. It would also be nice to see them go on adventures with the Cabs, especially to Brazil, where they would meet new friends. HDL would probably be ashamed of how AMJ treats Donald better, unlike them, and they would probably learn how to treat Donald. And to use a classic version, similar to Ducktales 1987, with HDL really sounding like boys and having a childlike spirit in them, but there would also be a difference in traits between them. It would be good to see the friendship between Donald’s and Jose's nephews, because if Donald and Jose can hang out, so can they. That would be good for creating heritage Cabs.

4. Donald's cousins

Donald’s cousins like Gus and Fethry could show up there going on adventures with Donald and meeting Jose and Panchito. They would also be in Brazil where they would meet Jose's friends. I’m not saying this nonsense, because Fethry Duck is very popular in Brazil. A short presence of Gladstone Gander would also be desirable, as his father Goostave Gander is similar to Baron von Sheldgoose, so perhaps the mystery of whether Donald has any blood ties to Sheldgoose would be partially revealed and it would be comical to see.

5. More Adventures and more villains

Well, when traveling to Brazil, there could be adventures through the Amazon forest, but also the discovery of various secret temples and meeting Amazon sorcerers. Xandra would definitely be present there. Except in Brazil, there could be adventures in Latin America (it was already in Nazca and Mexico), as well as meeting new friends and enemies in those areas.

Also, Baron von Sheldgoose and Lord Felldrake with Leopold would go to Babe Jaga and ask her for help. Lord Felldrake wants to get rid of Sheldgoose, but he has to get various artifacts to get rid of him. It might be interesting to see here. Also, Cabs after Latin America, could go to Slavic countries, because Baba Yaga is a witch from Slavic mythology. Cabs in addition to new rivals, could meet new friends. It’s a shame that Disney didn’t create characters that are from Poland and Russia (except for Peter from the movie Peter and the Wolf, there are either villains or third-rate side characters left) that could fit into the Duckverse, and in Poland and Russia and other Slovenian countries have a lot of fans who love Donald Duck and his world. Politics should not be confused with that, but it is not okay to avoid it. Also, adventures in China, Japan and East Asia and India would also be a great idea to get to know their culture. Without the use of politics and ideology. Japanese would surely like this.

The appearance of Green Bat (Jose as a superhero) would be a good occurrence.

The finale of the second season could be the re-release of Felldrake with other dangerous villains, but the end would surely be another victory for the Cabs with their relatives, friends and their nephews.

Of course, these are just my ideas and my suggestions, if you have ideas you can express your opinion here, and you can disagree with me. I would just like it to be the second season of Lot3c, but it all depends on how it will be. I hope it will be, but I’m not sure.

I hope you don’t mind me replying to your reblog about José’s VA like this, my reasons are kinda personal and since I tagged the TTC post, I don’t want all the people who faved/reblogged the post to read this.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Rob as a VA, but I feel like he isn’t the best to voice José, especially compared to José Oliveira and other VA who voiced José, like Mark La Roya (who was speaking very well in Portuguese in that Mickey Mouse short).

Rob is a good VA, but when he does José, it doesn’t feel like José to me. It reminds me of Yakko Warner who is trying to do a Spanish accent. Rob is amazing and can do distinctive voices. He voiced many different characters in Animaniacs and how he voiced Pinky was different from how he voiced Yakko and how he voiced that Doctor (I don’t remember the name). (or even how he voices Reuben in Lilo and Stitch). With only audio you could automatically know who he was voicing, because these characters all have different intonations/voices. But when he is voicing José, it just feels like it’s too much like Yakko, it’s not distinctive enough in my opinion.

This brings me to a very personal point that I don’t ever like to talk about...and I don’t want people to talk much about it, because I know other immigrants and nationalities have it way worse.

My first language is Portuguese, my family and I are immigrants, my parents have broken accents when they don’t speak our native language...Rob's accent is not Portuguese, it’s Spanish and it’s not his fault, it can be difficult for outsiders to see the difference between Portuguese and Spanish, it can be similar.

But where I grew up, people weren’t so nice, both adults and kids. And people would mock the way my parents would talk and they would mock them adding, of course, a fake accent...and the way they would do the accent sounds almost exactly like Rob’s...and I know it’s not his fault, that guy is super sweet and would never offend anyone. but I guess it kinda hits home with that...I’m sorry if it sounds so petty.

I know an episode of Mickey Mouse where Minnie asked José to make dinner for her and Mickey. In this episode, he was ok. He spoke Portuguese in the episode and his Portuguese wasn’t so bad for someone who doesn’t speak the language often. However, then you have the other shows like House of Mouse or The Three Caballeros ride or that show in Disney Junior (Mickey and the Raceroad something? Right?) and it’s really meh imo...

Like, José Carioca is an icon in Brazil, people adore him! If you could choose someone to VA a Brazilian character that means a lot to Brazil, you would choose at least someone who know how to pronounce his name correctly, right?

Like I give some slack for the shows that aired like 10 years ago, but now you have internet. You can just write José Carioca in google translator in Portuguese and listen to it. And it’s way closer than they ever did in the past 10 years. It’s Disney, they have the resource for it.

And that’s my reasons for it. Sorry if it might sound petty and awful, I don’t want to offend anyone and I love Rob so much. But just because someone is a good VA doesn’t mean they can nail every role and every character ever. There is a reason why sometimes the greatest VA can get rejected for a role and it’s because sometimes their voice doesn’t match the character. And I feel like this is one example.

Honduras coffee producers bridge the digital divide

For a relatively small country, Honduras’ reputation as a producer of high quality Arabica coffee is a big success story. It is estimated that more than a quarter of the Central American country’s population – or approximately two million people – are engaged at some point in the seasonal coffee harvest between November and March each year. And since the turn of the late 20th century, production has steadily grown to the point that the country now ranks in the top ten of exporters of coffee globally.

However, the Honduran coffee sector has also faced its fair share of setbacks and challenges. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated 80% of the country’s agriculture and a period of economic instability and political tension following a coup in 2009 affected the country’s exports to international markets. A few years later, an epidemic of Coffee Leaf Rust, or La Roya in Spanish, wreaked havoc on the cultivation of classical coffee varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, Caturra and Catuai.

However, given that 95% of growers are smallholder farmers with plots less than three hectares, producers are well positioned to help control the spread of the fungal disease with the introduction of more disease-resistant varieties and selective breeding.

One such cooperative that is supporting its growers to improve productivity, access new markets and combat the threat of La Roya is Café Organico Marcala (COMSA). Located in the mountainous La Paz region of western Honduras, one of the poorest areas of the country, the cooperative comprises of 1600 members who are highly dependent on coffee cultivation and agriculture. Since the last epidemic of La Roya in 2012, which affected more than a third of COMSA producers, the cooperative’s forward-thinking strategy is empowering growers to fight back.

Suita Manuela, COMSA’s Business Developer, joined the cooperative one year-ago and is motivated to help generate a sustainable income for farmers. She says: “I want to add value for coffee farmers which in turn helps to support the development of our country. COMSA is a community that is very open and I see a lot of talent”.

COMSA was founded in 2001 by a group of community-minded growers who joined forces to form their own organisation, which would look after their interests. One of the main goals of COMSA was, and still is, to directly access markets in o access directly to markets Europe, North America and Asia. At the time, the international coffee price had crashed and many producers were forced to abandon their small-holdings to search for work in the city.

The cooperative has since been working to help growers rebuild their livelihoods through the diversification of their income and education provision. Another important advantage of co-operative membership is that producer family members can now attend COMSA’s very own international school with a wide range of curricular activities such language classes in French, German and English.

Suita adds: “Alongside education, our members don’t just get a benefit from receiving higher prices for their coffee through premiums such as Fairtrade, and certification schemes including Bird Friendly, organic and Small Producers Product (SPP), but we also provide technical assistance. Some of the farmers bring their coffee in cherry state so we have a wet mill for processing while others bring their coffee in dry parchment. We also do honey and natural processing. Trading as a group benefits our members because we set a higher price than our competitors and expect a certain level of quality”.

Raising the bar on coffee quality and price has also benefited the wider community as traders have been forced to offer higher prices to local farmers. COMSA’s training in organic practices - Pata de Chucho - is rooted in a technical diploma course in sustainable agriculture that is funded through the Fairtrade Premium. Balancing the needs of the community and the environment, initiatives such as the promotion of organic composting supports farmers to apply the minerals and nutrients needed to improve production yields.

For example, coffee waste such as the pulp is recycled to make organic fertiliser that is then distributed to farmers for free, helping to reduce input costs by a factor of 50 compared to the more conventional, chemical-reliant, means of production. Meanwhile, farmer exchanges and training in the use of shade trees, sustainable water management and inter-cropping, producers are taught the agricultural techniques that have a direct result in the quality of the cup.

Suita says that last year, 500 containers of specialty-grade green coffee were bound for international markets - and trade is now steadily growing through the algrano platform. Two buyers that she met on a recent sales trip to Europe - Kiez Rösterei from Berlin, and Rast Kaffee, based near Lucerne, Switzerland – have been impressed with the quality and are keen to continue their relationship with COMSA this year.

She adds: “Algrano opens up the channels and makes it possible to sell microlots to roasters with higher quality beans. Being able to connect helps our producers because we can hear directly from the people who buy our coffee. The feedback we receive and higher price returns for a higher quality product means that we have higher levels of satisfaction amongst roasters and drinkers. It’s a dual-benefit for the coffee supply chain and coffee industry as a whole. The more exposure we have, the more profitable our growers become - it’s all about communication”.

How to Monitor For & Prevent Coffee Leaf Rust

Anyone who works in coffee production is likely familiar with the threat of coffee leaf rust. Devastating outbreaks of the fungus have made headlines in recent years. World Coffee Research reports that an epidemic that started in the 2011/2012 harvest season caused 70% devastation in Central America, with over US $3 billion in damages and lost income.

Infection with coffee leaf rust not only affects the price of coffee, but has the potential to bankrupt small estates. An ill-timed outbreak can place already vulnerable workers in absolute poverty and destroy communities.

So, how can you protect your farm from coffee leaf rust? Read on to learn about some good practices for monitoring and prevention, with insights from other producers.

What Is Coffee Leaf Rust?

Also known by its Spanish name, la roya, coffee leaf rust is a parasitic fungus that infects coffee plants. It manifests as yellow spots that first affect the undersides of the leaves and then develops into a yellow-orange powdery dust that is easily transferred among plants.

Coffee leaf rust can be traced back to the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia. From here, it followed coffee production around the world. In the late 19th century, Sri Lanka was one of the world’s largest coffee producers, exporting over 100 million pounds each year. But in 1892, a leaf rust epidemic wiped out all of the island’s coffee trees and producers changed to growing tea.

More recently, the fungus has spread in many Central American producing regions. World Coffee Research states that over 1.7 million coffee workers lost their jobs and that coffee leaf rust caused US $3.2 billion in damage and lost income in an epidemic that started in 2011.

Coffee leaf rust attacks the leaves of the plant, preventing them from photosynthesizing light into energy. As the disease progresses, the leaves fall off, as well as any flowers or cherries. The result is a much reduced or completely destroyed harvest.

“La roya is like cancer. It drains all the energy from the plants,” says Frederico Calderon, a farm technician at Dinamica Coffee in Guatemala. “Plants will use up all their energy fighting the disease and have nothing left to feed the cherries.”

And because the fungus damages the plant, it also reduces future yield and quality. For many farmers in Central America, it caused the loss of two or more crop cycles.

How Coffee Leaf Rust Spreads

Coffee leaf rust thrives in the same conditions as many coffee varieties. Its ideal temperature is between 15 and 30°C/59 to 86°F and humidity triggers germination.

Teodoro Engelhardt is a fourth-generation Guatemalan coffee producer and a foreman at Finca la Bella. He says, “If you have the best conditions for coffee plants to grow, those are also the best conditions for coffee rust. Once we understand that, we know that we’ll live with rust for the rest of our lives if we want to keep producing coffee.”

One of the difficulties in fighting coffee leaf rust is how easily it is spread. Because the spores are light and powdery, they’re easily transferred by wind and rain and catch on the clothes and tools of workers.

Alvaro Gaitan holds a Ph.D in Plant Pathology from Cornell University, and for several years was the Head of Plant Pathology at Cenicafé, the National Center for Coffee Research in Colombia. He tells me that when rain hits infected leaves, the spores are released into the air and easily transfer onto new plants. Rain paired with a steady wind, he explains, is a highly effective delivery system for coffee leaf rust.

Preventive Measures

There are some ways you can reduce the risk of coffee leaf rust on your farm.

Planned Pathways

On many farms, there are a lot of different workers, as well as family members, neighbours, and other visitors. It can be hard to control the way that all of these people move through a farm and even more difficult to ensure that they follow defined paths and avoid brushing against plants.

Chris Starry is a fifth-generation coffee producer in Guatemala who co-founded Truth Trading Company. He says, “We can’t force people to walk two or three kilometres out of the way just so they don’t spread leaf rust, because they just don’t care.”

He tells me that on his own farm, he created a formal path for local people who had been taking a shortcut through the plantations, which is bordered with non-coffee trees to create a barrier. Consider whether people are contributing to the spread of disease on your farm and whether planting borders could reduce risk for you.

Resistant Varieties

Some varieties of coffee are more resistant to infection than others. For example, Castillo and Caturra have some tolerance against coffee leaf rust so you may want to consider choosing them if they work well in your climate. But for some producers, disease resistance is less important than other factors.

Chris says, “My grandfather decided to plant Red Bourbon and focus on quality because he thought it was the future, and ever since the cup has been excellent. Bourbon is known to have a great taste, but it is also easily infected with rust.”

Health and Nutrition

Coffee plants that are weak, old, or already affected by other diseases or pests are more likely to be infected with rust.

“Just like people, we’re more vulnerable to sickness when we’re young and when we’re old. The same goes for coffee,” Chris says. “It’s easier for coffee rust to attack and destroy an unhealthy plant than one that’s strong and can fight back. The first plants that will get infected are the ones that are the weakest.”

Keep your crops healthy with scheduled fertilization and pest control. Consider soil analysis to find out whether you’re lacking nutrients and make special efforts to regularly monitor young, old, and damaged coffee plants.

Record-Keeping

You should also keep records on outbreaks of leaf rust and the weather conditions at the time. This will help you identify patterns and better prepare for future infections.

Alvaro says, “We recently had an epidemic, and we think it’s bad, but if you back into the newspapers, you see that maybe 20 years ago you had another epidemic happening in the same place. It’s not that something new is happening, it’s more that people forget. That means we must pay attention to the weather conditions [and understand] that sometime in the future we’ll have another epidemic.”

The Importance of Monitoring

Although it may be difficult to prevent infection, you can reduce damage by carefully monitoring your crops, pruning where appropriate, and treating infected plants with fungicide before rust has chance to spread.

Teodoro tells me that timing and awareness of the weather are important in preventing spread. “It’s so hard to control it because you can’t control the weather. Every time the weather is ideal for rust, it will come out. When it rains for a few days and stops, you’ll get an attack if the weather is right. After another few days you get more rainy days so the weather is good for rust, and it will come out again. It’s so aggressive. Everything is about the climate,” he says.

Teodoro tells me that he monitors his plants for signs of dormant infection. “We take the leaves and put them into the light and can see all the small spots. If you see that you have a lot of spots, it’s a little more clear than the green of the leaf.”

Alvaro Gaitan explains that “about two weeks after the infection of the leaf by the rust spores, the parasitism on the leaf cells starts to become obvious when you put the leaves into the light. This is because the green pigment of the leaves, the chlorophyll, starts to disappear in those cells and eventually turn yellow. These are the first symptoms of coffee rust. Some days later, these chlorotic spots give place to the first spores, and you can see the fungus on the underside of the leaf.”

Frederico says, “There are no high-tech methods for identifying coffee leaf rust. You have to be on the farms every day walking around and inspecting the plants constantly.”

Some producers use fungicides when they know an outbreak is likely, based on weather patterns, and then prune any visibly infected branches with the aim of keeping infection below 10% of their total crops.

Chris tells me, “It’s rare that we have cases where we have to prune. It’s case by case. We had one plant that was completely orange and different from the rest. We prune or stump the coffee plant. If you stump the plant and leave it there, a person, animal, or bird passes close to it and they might get some rust on them and spread it to the rest of the plants. When something extreme happens on our farm, we cut out the plant and burn it on the spot. That way the rust doesn’t move or spread from that spot.”

Coffee leaf rust is a serious concern with real consequences. By using preventative measures and careful monitoring, you can reduce the chance of infection. ET Online: Earlier this week when it was revealed William would be missing his godfather's memorial service, the Palace told ET that Kate, who underwent abdominal surgery in January, continues to be "doing well." But with the speculation only intensifying, the Palace released another statement to ET on Thursday.

"We gave guidance two days ago that the Princess of Wales continues to be doing well," the statement reads. "As we have been clear since our initial statement in January, we shall not be providing a running commentary or providing daily updates."
