it turns out this wasnt explained but here's why i've been inactive (a real reason that made for a fun blog post)

ive actually been avoiding tumblr for weeks because. [deep breath] i STILL havent watched the new spiderverse movie and my dash IS FULL OF SPIDERVERSE CONTENT

why is it full of spiderverse content? cause im a dummy. i followed all the spiderverse tags in may because i was super super psyched. i just didn't KNOW that i wasn't going to watch the movie until [checks date] until OVER A MONTH LATER.

but so many people watched the movie the day it came out. and they were posting about it. a lot.

at first i was like ok thats fine, i can still use tumblr, i will just wade through all the cool spider-punk fanart - BAM!!! HUGE SPOILERS ABOUT THE MAN HIMSELF O'HARA

and then repeating the process for all the other spiderverse-related tags i have followed. which is oh yeah EIGHTEEN. (or something.)

Ditko originally wanted Miguel to have a purple and orange suit, but the idea got vetoed.

Miguel's suit turns those colours while he talks about the multiverse, like an acknowledgement of what could have been.

And then as he starts bringing the conversation back to the present, back to what has to be, his suit starts turning back.

Lowkey I think vetoing the purple was a good idea, but you gotta love how they used colours in this film. Dunno if anyone brought it up before 🤷‍♀️

part of what made across the spiderverse so perfect was that it was largely centered on WHO spider-man is, in EVERY universe. not just Miles, or Peter, or Gwen, or Miguel. Spider-Man. it was about the ESSENCE of Spider-man. Spider-Man is love for humanity. Spider-Man is having to sacrifice and lose everything you love for the mask. Spider-Man is rebellion against the powers that be. Spider-Man is about trying to do both, in every universe. about not taking no for an answer or listening when everyone tells you your destiny. refusing to choose between the things and people you love. that’s why Spider-Man is so compelling: they want everything, even though everyone else tells them they can’t have it. that it’s not meant to be. and they just. keep. trying. keep getting back up. they just keep going, man.

someone probably said this already but in spiderverse i think it's interesting how when pavitr was first introduced everyone thought something bad was gonna happen to him bc of how confident and optimistic he was. and then in the actual movie we see that something bad was supposed to happen to him (police chief dying!) but it doesn't! miles stops it! and miguel berates miles for this, says it's going to cause the universe to collapse or whatever.

there's this idea that tragedy is inherent to spidermans growth, and while it's true that some spiderpeople learn important lessons through loss, no one stops to ask, is it really necessary? yeah, maybe the chief was supposed to die. but why does spiderman have to be formed through tragedy? why do we (as heroes) have to let people die? pavitr didn't lose anyone, and he's still a good spiderman! maybe, if he doesn't suffer, he'll end up better off for it!

so while miguel is arguing for all this big picture stuff about saving the multiverse he's lost sight of what it really means to be a spiderman, he's not looking out for the real individual people. yeah it's just one person who would die, but that one person means something to someone. shrugging and saying "stuff just sucks sometimes, we can't do anything about it" is the opposite of what superheroes do. pretty obviously, miles arc is also a reflection of the struggles people face in real life, working within unequal systems, where it's easy to shrug and say "that's just the way it is" and not ask "but why does it need be this way? can't we do something about it?"

miguel is arguing that you can't have your cake and eat it too. presumably, miles and co. are going to find a way to get around that and change things for the better (and maybe that's why miles has that line about two cakes in the advisors office!)

the implications of the spiderverse trailer irk me on miles’s behalf. like he saved the multiverse and for four years piggybacking off that stability, miguel creates a team of spiderpeople and doesn’t invite the kid who started it all, even inviting his friends before him and snapping at miles when he asks simple questions? something’s up

one thing I'll say about the spiderverse movies is that they create the desire to draw stuff from them but that idea is a lot less functional than it usually is with literally any other media. if I'm drawing something from she ra or a just roll with it campaign or avatar the last airbender or like. I don't know like. I'm trying to think of a live action things I have drawn about but I can't. I guess I can say even like when I draw dancers I know in real life, a lot of the fun of all this comes from taking what I'm looking at and making it brighter and more saturated and better composed and better coordinating the color scheme and otherwise making the things I think are important and that I visually most value jump out the most. but the Thing about into the spiderverse and the thing even MORE about across the spiderverse is that they already look exactly what I want everything to look like and more like, three times over. you couldn't get more saturated; you couldn't find better color schemes, you couldn't improve on their frame composition if you tried. so I am sitting around thinking man I want to draw stuff from spiderverse!! but I am paralyzed by what the fuck am I even gonna do then LMAO
