Like Looking in the Wrong Mirror - An Eight Fic
Tumblr media
[Read on Ao3!]
Rated: T Relationships: Eight & Four Splatoon 3: Side Order Content Warnings: Unhappy Ending, Graphic Ink-Based Violence, References to Asphyxiation Words: 590
Summary: Intensifying-Harmony.Floor and what resides there. (It's not Four.) (But it looks so much like Four.) (So very… very.. much….)
---
The charger clicks uselessly, ink run dry. Eight pushes forward, but the dark ink at their heels seems to suck them further into place.
Only one left now, then that elusive locker key is theirs, and one step closer to getting their memories back.
Armed with what looks nearly exactly like a Splattershot, the enemy surges forward, toward Eight.
(It steps with their left foot first, like Four does.)
Desperate, Eight swings the gun around like a baseball bat, clocking the opponent upside the head.
A glitchy, staticky scream rings out.
The gun clatters to the floor, and the inkling follows suit, knocked over by the weight of Eight’s hit.
Momentum carried Eight more than logic. The ink on the floor sloshing at their ankles, each of their hearts pounding in their ears.
Maybe Eight trips. Maybe they leap.
Either way they end up on top of it, knocking their weapon aside.
Blunt finger tips attempt to rake across Eight, clawing out for freedom.
(When they’d met, Four had given Eight a high five, then lingered to compare their hands. She’d laughed, poking Eights sharp finger tips with her own.)
A familiar voice echoes from a broken speaker, begging, pleading. There’s a rhythm to it, a melody almost. A song Eight could almost remember, at the edges of their mind.
But the pieces don’t connect.
Eight lunges for the mask. Their fingers curl around the edges of a metal plate, prying for the slightest bit of leeway to work with.
Four thrashes beneath them, but Eight holds steadfast. Trying to sway the weight to their advantage, to remove the metal and free their friend. A little harder, a little further, they’d help them just—
Then Eight’s falling backwards, the sound of tearing splitting their ears. Thick black strands of ink stretch between where metal and flesh had been fused. It feels like an eternity, pulling away and away, until Eight stumbles, and everything has separated.
The mask remains clutched in their hands. The body beneath them goes limp instantly, as though puppet strings had been cut.
Scrambling up again, Eight lurches forward, only centimetres from Four’s face.
But this isn’t Four.
Only a dripping mass of black pours forward, glitching at the edges instead of ever spilling out. Almost as if it’s pulsating, nearly beating.
On impulse, Eight reaches forward, dropping the mask as their fingers go limp. Their hand goes up to brush the ink out of Four’s face.
(This ink isn’t her sun stained golden, she can’t breathe like this, she’ll suffocate—)
Eight’s hands just plunge into darkness, seemingly unending. No facial features, nothing solid, only an abyss. Their arm is swallowed by ink, extending much deeper than the back of Four’s head suggests it possibly could.
It stings. It’s crawling, it’s absorbing, Four’s dark ink bleeds into Eights pastel turquoise, an infection, a virus—
Eight yanks their arm out, a splatter of dark ink arcing out behind them and splashing to the ground.
The static and pixels dance across Eight’s vision before they feel it. The impact of their legs bashing against the ground, dropping as the body beneath them disintegrates, an implosion of darkness and then—
Nothing.
Four wasn’t there.
Just Eight kneeling on an ink coated platform, a small key floating a few meters behind them.
But the key is just data, given a physical form.
But the ink isn’t real, it’s only 1’s and 0’s and some clever rendering.
Then the inkling?
It wasn’t Four.
And never was.
(So why are they still crying?)
[Ending.]

I actually did some writing
I wrote a splatoon chatfic one shot. Just a fun little thing I made as an excuse to make Acht interact with other Splatoon characters and also make up some world building. Go read it

I got bored so here is how Everest feels about every character.
Tartar: Naturally, Everest is extremely loyal to Tartar because he helped her and gave her a home. She looks up to him and has pledged undying loyalty to the commander. It’s to the point where she blames herself and her “incompetence” for getting stung and not August.
Mr. Grizz: Whenever Tartar and Mr. Grizz meet up, Everest notices a sharp tension whenever Tartar mentions Everest. Considering that her first interaction with the bear was with her wearing her mammal coat, she always feels a sense of judgment and hate towards her oozing from him.
Inklings/Octarians (Or just most creatures in Inkopolis): Everest HATES THEM! Words cannot describe the contempt Everest has for them. Essentially, when she came down from the mountain, she started wearing a disguise (being confused for a stone fish when she was trying to blend in as an inkling) and started learning about the species in Inkopolis. Keep in mind, the cult she came from had been sacrificing people and animals to these guys. When Everest got to learn more about them, she grew enraged, believing that they were false gods who didn’t deserve the land the humans left behind.
Sanitized Octarians: Everest doesn’t talk to them much, not that she gets much out of them anyways. Most of them are timid around her and exceptionally quiet. In fact, if anything, Everest sees them as mindless servants of Tartar’s. She doesn’t treat them as such though.
CQ: Everest dislikes the smugness and brutal honesty she gets from him. She’d kick him like a football if he couldn’t morph and hold off her attacks easily.
August: Everest despises August for stinging her. Not much there. August also falls under Everest’s belief that the creatures in Inkopolis are false gods. Everest believes August is weak and a coward for sneaking out under the cover of darkness and stealing Tartar’s journal.
May: After her sanitization, …Everest softened up a little around May. She doesn’t fully trust May but she trusts her enough to talk about the cult she came from. She’s neutral about May for the most part (except about May attacking Tartar).
April: April is in the same boat. Exact same boat actually. She likes how quiet April is and often comes to her after a tough test or when someone frustrates her enough that she wants to break something.
7: Everest trusts 7 quite a lot. Conversations are awkward and quiet but even an idiot could see that they’re friends. Everest talks to 7 about her life in the cult and how terrible it was and 7 talks about her life in the underground and how boring and lifeless it often is. She’s also teaching Everest how to speak Octarian! …Not that Everest notices.
Everest: “You’ve…really never seen the sun? Or been outside?”
7: “Not even under タルタル’s (Tartar’s) sanitization.. I wonder how it feels though. The books he gets always talk about animals enjoying the warm 太陽 (Sun), the fresh air, the expansiveness of it all. …Are dragons real? The big lizards with wings?”
Everest: “タルタル? O-Oh! Tartar. And what was that? Sun? Sorry, ain’t the best with either pronunciation. Uhm, Not too sure honestly. If they do, they don’t like mountain cults,” Everest started giggling.
7: 7 giggles along.
Everest: “So, what’re you reading? There…weren’t a lot of books on the mountain and what books there were were filled with insane rambles about the Leviathan and how it was so powerful that God itself had to come down and slay it and how God failed. So far, all I’ve seen of this ‘Great Leviathan’ is the Zapfish and the mildest word I can think of for it is ‘Derpy’.”
7: “...” 7 checks the cover, “It’s about a world filled with cats and clans…”
Everest: “...Cats. There were a few Pallas Cats on Mount Everest, I always wanted to pet them actually. They always seem so…soggy as Tartar has weirdly referred to me as before. I don’t think he’s using the word right but he seems to think it’s an affectionate term…”
Pearl: As all that Everest has heard of Pearl is Tartar’s angry rants, she dislikes Pearl and thinks she’s a spiteful pri- jerk. On fair terms though (if they actually met), Everest would feel put off by Pearl’s excitement and dislike how she acted.
Marina: Same case with Pearl, she thinks she’s weak and stupid (based off of Tartar’s rants). On fair terms, I think she’d feel uncomfortable about Marina but definitely treat her a little nicer. Still cold but appreciate the music she and Pearl make together.
Captain: Everest constantly makes cruel jokes about when he’ll keel over dead. I don’t think this would change even if she actually met Cuttlefish.
3: …Everest thinks their harshness (that Tartar has talked about) is rather admirable. She wouldn’t mind meeting them in real life. Everest also wants to know how they managed to unsanitized themself.
8: Everest wants to STRANGLE 8!! She wants to see 8’s life fade away in her hands. She wants to throw 8 into water and watch them dissolve. And if they didn’t? Everest would sadistically watch them run out of breath slowly as she held their hand underwater. Everest is terrified of the blender but she would happily blend 8 by her own hands.

So. I've Cracked The Code On The Appearance Changes in Side Order.
Wall of photos and such incoming.
After a lot of testing, I've discovered there are 7 different little lights and doodads that are added to Agent 8 via upgrading certain chips, each with a basic 1st tier and and upgraded 2nd tier. The 1st tier of upgrades appear after picking up two of the same chips in that changes pool (ex: 2 Homing Shots chips), with the 2nd tier appearing after picking up five of them (ex: 5 Homing Shot chips). There is no further visual indicators added for maxing chips that go beyond 5, such as Splash Damage or Rush Attack.
Full disclaimer: This is the result of researching a LOT of my own runs, so I can say this is true with about 95% certainty. If I labeled an ability chip in the wrong visual pool, please let me know!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's start with the basics - our control group. No Teal upgrades provide any visible changes to Agent 8 (or Pearl-bot for that matter), so I ran an all-teal palette to demonstrate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First is likely one of the more requested visual changes - the Headset. The 1st tier sports a basic metallic earpiece, with the 2nd adding an antenna and eyepiece that match your primary ink color.
Maxing Splash Damage, Sound Wave Damage, Splash Radius, Special Charge Up, Turf Lucky Chain, Rush Knockback, and Homing Shots all provide the headset!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is Ink Bubbles. The 1st tier shows transparent, slower bubbles flowing in 8's ink tank, with the bubbles being faster and more opaque in the 2nd tier.
Nabbing Poison Ink, Splat Ink Recovery, Ink Saver Sub, Ink Recovery Rate, Sticky Ink, and Explosion Knockback all provide Ink Bubbles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following that is the Fins. The 1st tier shows the base shackles being added to 8's boots, with the fins themselves being added for the 2nd tier.
Picking up Run Speed, Swim Speed, Rush Attack, Mobile Ink Recovery, Mobile Special Charge, and Mobile Drone Gauge all provide the Fins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, moving on to the weapon upgrades!
First we have the Muzzle Lights, which appear at the muzzle of most weapons, and the sides of the brush and roller nearest the base. The 1st tier shows a circle and squares circling around the muzzle, with the 2nd tier being more exaggerated, with alternating squares and rectangles forming a hexagon pattern in the center.
These are exclusive to the Ink Damage, Main Damage (Close), and Main Damage (Distant) chips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is likely the most common visual one can see on their run - the Arrows. The 1st tier shows a circle with three arrows pointing down the weapon, with the 2nd tier adding some blowback markers behind the circle.
These are on a whopping TEN upgrades, being Splatling Barrage, Main Firing Speed, Horizontal Slash Speed, Main Range, Main Piercing, Main Ink Coverage, Rush Ink Coverage, Quick Charge, Shot Spread Reduction, and Ink Saver Main.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last of the weapon upgrades are the Dots. The 1st tier is 3 large dots and a circle spinning at the bottom of your weapon or around your wrist, with the 2nd tier adding another circle around the dots.
These can be found on the Hindrance Damage, Ink Attack Size, Charge Storage, Moving Ink Speed, Extra Dodge Roll, Brella Cooldown, and Knockback upgrades.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, my favorite little knick-knack, the Shrimp Hook. This little guy appears on your ink tank after picking up 2 matching Luck upgrades (ex: Lucky Bomb Drop, Canned Special Drop, etc), and begins to glow after picking up 5. However, the glowing effect is not visible in the post-game screen. 😔 (I would totally buy one of these if someone made one, btw)
By the way, 7 visual upgrades * 5 chips needed to max each visual is 35 chips, which is just shy of the 36 total chips you can have on one palette, which means, in theory, you could. Have every maxed visual indicator on in one run.
Just a thought. : )
