Steggy Week, Day 6: Tropes and Cliches ↳ I’m a little bit frightened of my imagination
“What is that?” Steve asks around a mouthful of cereal, looking from Peggy to the piece of paper that she has just slammed down on the table in front of him with some trepidation.
His roommate puts her hands on her hips and gives him a slow, triumphant smile that, far from easing his worries, multiplies them. When Peggy gets that look on her face it usually means trouble – trouble that Steve will inevitably be dragged into headfirst because he can never bring himself to say no to her.
(Of course, the reason for that is a whole other kind of trouble, but it’s too early in the morning to deal with it now.)
“That,” she tells him, “Is how we’re going to pay our rent.”
Curious, Steve pulls the paper closer so he can read the big capital letters at the top of the page:
PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY
Romantic Couples Study
You and your partner are eligible to participate if you:
Are in a committed, monogamous romantic relationship
Have been dating for at least six months
Are currently living together
Are both over 18
He stops reading and looks up at Peggy.
“You want us to take part in this study.”
“Yes. We’re living together and over eighteen. It’s perfect.”
“Apart from one small thing.”
“That we’re not actually a couple?”
“That’s the one.”
Peggy just grins. Pulling out a chair, she sits down alongside him and leans in, eyes bright with determination and Steve knows it’s already a lost cause. She’s made up her mind and has a plan, which means he’s going to say yes. It’s how they work.
“Maybe we’re not, but they don’t know that,” she explains. “We’ve been flatmates for nearly a year and we know each other at least as well as any romantic couple does, if not better.”
That’s true. They’ve won the Couples Game against Clint and Natasha, and Tony and Pepper, who are both actual couples. More than once. Steve knows everything about Peggy, from her favourite shade of lipstick (Besamé Red Velvet) to what time on a Sunday afternoon she Skypes her brother in London (3p.m.).
“All we have to do is pretend.”
“Isn’t that a little dishonest?”
Even as he says it, he knows it won’t be entirely. Not for him. Pretending to be in love with Peggy Carter won’t be a lie for him at all. The dishonest part will be pretending that he is pretending.
But, he supposes, that’s not so different from every day as it is.
Unaware of what’s going on inside his head, Peggy has waved his objection. “Steve, we’re both broke. We have to pay rent soon. Unless you can find someone willing to buy one of your paintings for a few thousand dollars in the next two weeks, do we really have a choice?”
“I guess not.”
“So?”
And, as he has known he would since she first flew in the door in a whirlwind of vivacity and Chanel perfume, Steve says, “I’m in.”

Steggy Fic Recs
This is my contribution for Steggy Week 2k18 Day 1 (Favourite moments, headcanons, and fanwork recs).
There are so many Steggy fics I love that it was hard to know where to start! So, I decided to start at the beginning - here are 10 of the very first Steggy fics I read and loved (back when I watched Agent Carter Season 1, fell hard for Peggy, and wanted to see her be happy with this Steve guy she was clearly still in love with).
In no particular order:
1.  Burning with a Deadly Heat by @amuseoffyre
This epic story is both Steggy and casefic with a really great level of detail and tension. After Steve is unfrozen, several years after the war, he and Peggy tie up some loose ends, with the help of Colonel Phillips and the Howling Commandos.
2.  Metamorphoses by @amuseoffyre
This story is unfinished (and has not been updated in a long time) but is still very much worth reading. The serum doesn’t seem to have much effect on Steve… at first. But Peggy liked Skinny Steve too, and always saw the potential in him. And sometimes changes don’t happen immediately.
3.  I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire by @bookishandi
This is another fic that is unfinished and hasn’t been updated in a long time, but is still absolutely worth the read. It explores the slow development of the Steggy relationship behind the scenes of CA:TFA.
4.  lovers alone wear sunlight by CoraClavia
A really nice moment between Peggy and Steve on a break for lunch in the Austrian Alps during the war. CoraClavia has written several of these little Steggy gems, and they’re all really good.
5. Five Minutes More by @roboticonography
This is a series of vignettes about the first time various Agent Carter characters meet a recently-defrosted Steve (and, as a bonus, the first time Steve hears “The Captain America Adventure Program”). Fun fact: this story was the reason I joined tumblr, because I didn’t want to miss any future ficlets robot might write. It’s that good!
6.  The Simple Secret by @roboticonography
This is a Steggy-during-the-war story, where Bucky is injured and Peggy goes on a mission with Steve and the Howling Commandos as their substitute sharpshooter. During which time Steve and Peggy get to know each other better <cough>.
7.  Above and Beyond by thegreytigress
This tells the story Peggy mentions in the interview Steve watches in the Smithsonian in CA:TWS, where Captain America breaks apart a blockade in a blizzard. With, of course, a little help from Peggy and the Howling Commandos.
8.  The Life and Times of Agent Carter by @indiefic
This is a version of Agent Carter season 1 where Steve is around but there’s a different reason Peggy is mourning. I love so much how indiefic incorporated Steve and the Steggy relationship while also managing to make everything happen almost the same way it did on the show, including the overall emotional arc.
9.  soon we’ll be without the moon by @siriaeve
Peggy finds Steve in the bombed-out pub after Bucky falls, and takes him home with her. So. Good. (and, among other things, always makes me want a bacon sandwich!)
10.  Margaret, May I? By Arya_Greenleaf
The author’s notes say this is “a series of ficlets/drabble written in an attempt to up my smut game”, and there is certainly that, but there’s also a lot of really great emotional and plot content, to the point where this really isn’t PWP.
Enjoy!

Day 1 (Monday): Favourite moments, headcanons, and fanwork recs
I’m killing two birds with one stone so here are some of my favourite <10k-word fics in order of word count! (The word limit is just to narrow down my selection)
Of cloaks and daggers by @beautifulwhensarcastic (2138 words)
Steve, the Captain of Queen Virginia’s guard, finds an intruder in his quarters. Though she’s dressed with clear intention on hiding her identity, he recognizes Margaret Carter - Queen’s loyal friend and spy. She comes to him seeking help.
In the Bloom of Life by fluffernutter8 (2663 words)
Five times Steve gave Peggy flowers, and one time she gave one to him.
fill out the form first by flowermasters (3924 words)
Peggy and Steve meet in the most mundane of ways. That is, of course, before the bank heist.
Third Time’s the Charm by @bitememarvelcanon (6635 words)
Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter are perfect for each other. The only problem is, they just can’t seem to meet.
A modern Steggy AU in which Steve is a graphic designer, Peggy is a graduate student, and Bucky never gets to ride shotgun.
It’ll Probably Drown Before I’m Through by zarabithia (9870 words)
Peggy's neighbor is both handsome and kind. It's really too bad he might be a spy.

Fieldwork
Steggyweek2k18 Day 6: Tropes & Clichés
This is a continuation of yesterday’s fic, which began with preparations for a very important dinner party. Now we flash back to see just how those plans were made. (I do recommend reading the first part before this one.)
Three days prior…
“I beg your pardon, Jack?” Peggy sputtered, crossing her arms over her chest in a gesture Steve recognized immediately. Reflexively, he took a step out of the line of fire.
“You wanted to be doing fieldwork Carter, now’s your chance.” Thompson looked over at Steve and rolled his eyes. It took all of Steve’s control to keep his own face blank at the blatant disrespect. “Rogers says you did your share of undercover work during the war. Unless he meant a different kind of undercover,” he smirked, and Steve’s fist flexed of its own accord, “but either way, your history with Captain America is an asset here, and it’s my job to leverage that.”
“Be that as it may, why have you concocted this additional storyline?”
Thompson squinted at her, lips pursed. “Your beau—” here Peggy tried to interrupt him, as she and Steve weren’t actually dating, despite what that horrible radio show insinuated, but Jack steamrolled over her objections— “may have the brawn for SSR work, but he’s yet to prove he’s got the chops to keep a target occupied as long as we need him to without throwing a punch.” Steve felt less inclined to punch Jack when he himself was the target of his insults. But only slightly. “That’s where you come in, Marge.”
Steve could tell she was grinding her molars. “I don’t follow,” he spoke up, hoping to give her some time to rein in her ire.
Jack rolled his eyes again. “Dinner at a restaurant leaves too many variables. Can you think of a plausible reason your coworker should join you for a meal at home with this muckety-muck?”
“No,” Steve allowed. Jack did have a point there.
“Great.” Thompson clapped his hands together. “I now pronounce you man and wife, at least until we’re able to wire up Secretary Fletcher’s townhome for surveillance. Then you two can go back to whatever it is you do that is not dating.”
He went back to the paperwork on his desk. Steve hazarded another glance at Peggy. She was seething. A vein stood out near her hairline, her eyes blazing, and there was more color in her cheeks than usual. She looked magnificent. He stifled the urge to sigh. The familiar confusion returned, too many thoughts crowding in at once, and Peggy at the center of them all once more. He’d been hoping for a chance to get back into her good graces for months. It didn’t seem like this would be it.
Jack looked up. “What are you two doing? Scram. Go take a wedding photo or something.”
They left, Steve holding the door for Peggy. She said nothing to him, her nose in the air as she stalked back to her desk. He didn’t think it was a good idea to follow her, but they had to make a plan for Friday night.
“I, uh, don’t have too many recipes,” he started.
She gave him a withering look. “You certainly aren’t expecting me to cook.” It wasn’t a question.
“No! Not at all.” He rubbed the back of his neck, wracking his brain. He should have known not to open with the cooking. “I was hoping maybe you knew someone who might be able to, though? Someone who might be able to help us keep up the ruse?”
The anger on her face melted into thoughtfulness as Peggy considered his suggestion. He couldn’t help the soaring feeling in his own stomach when she brightened at hitting upon an idea. “I think a friend of a friend might be up to the task. And I’m owed a favor, as it turns out.”
So that was how Steve had come to be at a strange home, playing at being Peggy’s husband. His heart ached as he came in the front door, imagining, had things been different, that this could be every evening with Peggy. The house was cozy, tidy and brightly lit. The smell of dinner wafting in from the kitchen was mouth-watering.
He met Ana Jarvis, who’d taken to her role with aplomb, calling Peggy ‘Mrs. Rogers’ in a way that made him feel warm all over. He supposed it was good to practice now. He’d never been very adept at lying.
Ana directed him down the hall to get ready, and he steeled himself as he knocked on the door to the master bedroom. Peggy opened it quickly and yanked him inside by his tie.
“We have a problem,” she said, keeping her voice low.
Steve blinked, taking in the sight of Peggy dressed to the nines, her hair pulled back in combs so that it fell in soft waves against her neck. The square neckline of her dress showed off what seemed like acres of creamy skin, while the gathering at the shoulders and over the bust did wonders for her—already amazing—figure.
“A...problem?” He blinked again and glanced away, trying to focus on anything but the way that Peggy looked, standing alone with him in a bedroom.
“Some wires must have been crossed in relaying my request. Mrs. Jarvis seems to be under the impression that we are, in fact, blissful newlyweds.”
The look on her face was dire, but all Steve could think to do in that moment was laugh.

Steggy Week, Day 1!
My dears. My friends. My dudes. Times are...one might say rough. And so as easy as it would be to make a list of wonderful, angsty Steggy fics for today’s prompt (Favorite moments, headcanons, and fanwork recs), I didn’t want to. Here instead are some of my faves, the fluff and/or happy endings only, please! version (although, knowing me, that was the majority already). It’s mostly AU/canon rewrites (and you KNOW why), each one lovingly selected for delight and to give you a smile to start off your week.

A belated entry for Day 2 of Steggy Week: When Timelines Collide - a pulp cover for @siriaeve‘s cracking story Everything Old is New Again, which features a de-powered Steve in the world of Agent Carter.
I have more of these in the works, so let’s go ahead and call it the Fic Factory Publications series.
