The Republicans sued to end student debt relief on MOHELA's behalf against their will and against their best interests since the state government didn't have standing for the suit, and Republicans Supreme Court justices found for the state anyway because that's how much they hate poor and middle class students having access to college and want to punish them with crushing life long debt for daring to try to get an education.
All precedent and the legal requirement that the people doing the suing have an injury and standing have been thrown out.

THE STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS APPLICATION... IS LIVE!!!
IT’S HAPPENINGGGGGGG
Ok that’s too much capslock. Go here to fill out the application, babies:
Student loan forgiveness application
It takes about 30 seconds to fill out with your basic info. And while the site is in beta mode (or so it says) it seems... extremely well-designed and user friendly for a government site? Where was this level of web design when the ACA was passed?
If you have student loans we IMPLORE YOU to fill it out and see if you qualify. If you have questions (and who don't?), see our FAQ on student loan forgiveness here:

I deleted the thing I reblogged about dates on student loan debt relief stuff, because I got a few more corrections. I feel bad about having accidentally contributed to misinformation, and there seems to be a lot of confusion, so I'm going to do my best to disambiguate.
All information comes from the studentaid.gov website, linked here.
This is all accurate, as far as I can tell, as of September 2, 2022. Changes may be made after.
The payment pause on federally held student loans has been extended through December 31, 2022 (this year)
The payment pause is automatically applied to all federally held student loans, you do not need to sign up for it.
The deadline to apply for the student debt relief program is December 31, 2023 (next year)
This may be automatic for some, but you will likely need to apply for the student debt relief program.
The debt relief program is expected to take 4-6 weeks to process and apply your relief.
If you apply before November 15, 2022 (this year) you will be likely to receive your debt relief before payments on federally held student loans resume.
You will be best served by applying before November 15, 2022 (this year) but the hard deadline to apply for student debt relief remains December 31, 2023 (next year).
If you believe you qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSFL) you need to apply by October 31, 2022 (this year).
This is because there have been temporary changes to qualifications for PSFL that will expire on October 31, 2022 (this year). The program will persist afterwards, but you may be less likely to qualify for forgiveness once the changes drop.
You can read more about PSFL and apply for the program here.
You can sign up for email updates on the Federal Student Loan Debt Relief stuff at this website.
sorry for contributing to any confusion, I hope this helps straighten things out.

The first two bills in the package specifically deal with how colleges give students information before they decide to attend.
The “College Transparency Act (CTA)” would reform the college data reporting system so students have better information about outcomes at schools before committing to a university.
The “Understanding the True Cost of College Act” will require schools to have a similar style for their financial aid letters with a breakdown of the aid so students can better compare offers.
The last three bills deal directly with student loans, including how information is given to borrowers and limiting some borrowing.
The “Informed Student Borrower Act” requires students to be more informed when applying for a loan by acknowledging they received student loan entrance materials or they participated in entrance counseling.
The students would receive materials that show how long it would take to pay off their loans, how much the monthly payments would be and what they will likely make going to a certain school and program. The students would receive this information yearly.
The fourth bill addresses the nine different student loan repayment options the Department of Education offers. These options, with eligibility based on income and loan type, gave borrowers different timeline options for paying off their loans and the amount they would owe each month.
The bill cuts those repayment options down to two to simplify the process. The standard 10-year repayment plan for borrowers would remain and the REPAYE program would stay, with some changes. The REPAYE program gives loan forgiveness earlier to low-income individuals who have low balances on their loans.
Additionally, loans can not be given to undergraduate or graduate programs that have shown the earning potential is not higher than a high school graduate or bachelor’s degree under the bill.
The last bill in the package aims to put pressure on graduate schools to lower costs, which account for almost half of student loan debt taken out each year.
The legislation would end Graduate PLUS loans, which had their borrowing limit removed in 2006. Republicans say this type of loan has increased the cost of college, calling it “inflationary.” Students would still have other loan options for graduate school such as Stafford loans, which are offered by the government, but have limits on borrowing.
“Our federal higher education financing system contributes more to the problem than the solution. Colleges and universities using the availability of federal loans to increase their tuitions have left too many students drowning in debt without a path for success,” Cassidy said.

Huffington Post
Nov. 19, 2022
The Biden administration started contacting students who have been approved for student loan debt relief, CNN reported on Saturday. The move comes on the heels of the administration’s request for the Supreme Court to lift the nationwide injunction on the loan relief program.
According to emails acquired by CNN, Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona sent emails on Saturday to those who have been approved for loan debt relief. The administration’s student loan debt relief program has been facing numerous legal challenges since its launch last month, which Cardona addressed in the emails.
“Unfortunately, a number of lawsuits have been filed challenging the program, which have blocked our ability to discharge your debt at present. We believe strongly that the lawsuits are meritless, and the Department of Justice has appealed on our behalf,” Cardona said in the emails to students approved for the loan relief, CNN reported.
The highly-anticipated student loan forgiveness program offers $10,000 of federal student debt cancellations to qualified loan borrowers. But the government stopped accepting applications on Nov. 10 after a Texas federal judge struck down the plan, deeming it “unconstitutional.”
“We believe strongly that the Biden-Harris Student Debt Relief Plan is lawful and necessary to give borrowers and working families breathing room as they recover from the pandemic and to ensure they succeed when repayment restarts,” Cardona said in a recent press release.
According to the Associated Press, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a nationwide injunction of the plan earlier this week after six Republican-led states challenged the plan. The Department of Justice filed a request on behalf of the Biden administration on Friday asking the Supreme Court to lift the hold on the plan while the legal proceedings play out.
“The Eighth Circuit’s erroneous injunction leaves millions of economically vulnerable borrowers in limbo, uncertain about the size of their debt and unable to make financial decisions with an accurate understanding of their future repayment obligations,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said in the request sent to the court.

Supreme Court Rejection Spurs Changes to Student Loan Debt Relief Program
Tumblr media
Student loan debt relief —- A student loan is a sort of financial aid given to students in the United States to assist them in covering the costs of higher education. It is often borrowed from the government or private lenders and must be returned over time with interest. As the expense of education has grown significantly in recent years, student loans serve an important role in enabling students to pursue college or university degrees.
Student loans, on the other hand, may have a significant influence on students’ life. Many graduates are saddled with significant debt after finishing their courses, which can take years, if not decades, to repay entirely. This financial stress might make it difficult for them to fulfill other life objectives, such as buying a home, establishing a family, or saving for retirement. Furthermore, the stress of debt repayment can have an impact on one’s mental health and overall well-being.
Furthermore, student loan debt may limit employment options since graduates may be forced to choose higher-paying positions above their genuine interests in order to satisfy loan commitments. It also contributes to economic inequality, since poor students who rely significantly on loans may face more financial difficulties after graduation than their more affluent peers.

So I got an update that the student loan debt relief application has launched. The application asks for my ssn. I'm very hesitant to give my ssn. Is this application real? I know I sound paranoid, but I don't care lol.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Wednesday vetoed GOP-sponsored legislation that sought to block his administration's plan to provide debt relief for people who have taken out federal student loans.
"Congressional Republicans led an effort to pass a bill blocking my Administration’s plan to provide up to $20,000 in student debt relief to working and middle class Americans. I won’t back down on helping hardworking folks. That’s why I’m vetoing this bill," Biden tweeted, along with a video explaining his decision.
Biden suggested that some Republicans who supported the measure were hypocritical because they had received loans for their small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
