Navigating the Digital Landscape: A Student's Guide to Staying Safe Online in the Era of Technology
In this age of ever-growing technology, social media plays a crucial role in our lives, transcending age and demographics. However, amidst the vast online world, ensuring your safety is paramount. Welcome to 'Student Voices: A High-Schooler’s Perspective,' where we explore essential tips for staying secure while surfing the Internet.
Let's begin with the public perspective. With millions using the Internet daily, have you ever considered what impression your social media profiles leave? While introducing yourself is fine, oversharing personal information can pose risks. Remember, sharing selectively is key to maintaining your online safety. Be cautious when chatting with others; there's no obligation to disclose personal details, especially to unfamiliar individuals. The online world harbours potential dangers, so exercise discretion in your interactions.
For a more private viewpoint, safeguarding against hackers, viruses, and unwanted attention is crucial. Changing your IP address regularly is a powerful security measure. While the exact process may be unfamiliar, basic steps like resetting your router or changing your location with a different connection can shake off trackers and cookies. Further exploration of this topic may follow in future blogs, but these initial steps can significantly enhance your online safety.
In essence, if you're uncertain about online safety, it's better to go offline. Avoiding the disclosure of personal information and being cautious in online interactions are fundamental practices. Changing your IP address should be common knowledge for all. Let's collectively prioritize our safety in the digital realm.

Black Curators Matter: Who are they?
Black Curators have taught me so much, I often think about how many voices I have in my bibliography for Black Art. #art #theurbnslothwrites #nyc #graduatestudent #contemporaryart #career #
I was so excited to start my next chapter- COVID permitting that chapter to be in-person. And to see the startling headline that Black curators are being hired as quickly as they are leaving institutions makes me wonder about the politics, the workplace environments, and the flexibility to study and envision a world that isn’t so Eurocentric. (Link to news.artnet Op-ed) My first question was…

Gap Years Continued
A few days ago we had an anonymous question come in about gap years. We cast the question out to our students for insight. We received a lot of responses and wanted to share a few more:
“I chose to take a gap year. But I have some words of wisdom (if they can be considered wise!) about COA and why I don't think you need to take a gap year. I originally was planning on going to school for musical theater in San Francisco where I was going to have a specific major and be in specific classes. I took a gap year because I realized I wasn't down for that. AT some point in March, I applied to COA because I liked how you could create your own educational path. I feel like, though my gap year did provide me with really cool experiences, I wouldn't have had to change where I was going to school if I was going to COA in the first place. My gap year helped me realize that I don't just have ONE interest (musical theater), I have many. And at COA I am given the opportunity to explore those passions. Here, you figure out what you want to do and what you don't want to do by ACTUALLY DOING THEM instead of just assuming that you will know beforehand, which is what happens when you apply to a school with such a specific major. Hope that is helpful.” Class of 2022 student.
“I was more than ready and excited to enter COA the moment I stepped foot on campus, but I felt I needed a moment to experience the world and take in what I could by guessing and speculating rather than by knowing with a formal education behind me. It was a really difficult decision to take a gap year, but I am satisfied with it. I started and finished many projects in my time between schooling, and meditated on life for quite a while. I learned an immense about myself and others that could not have been gleaned from any sort of institution. I gained some exposure to new cultures through a budgeted extent of domestic and international travel, though my time spent at home was equally informative.” Class of 2022 student.
“I took a gap year before coming to COA. In the fall, I did Semester At Sea and then worked at a care home in the UK as the activities coordinator while living with my family. Taking the gap year was one of the best decisions I've made in my life, and I highly recommend most people to do so. Here are my reasons: Taking a gap year gives you a mental break between high school and college. I was emotionally and intellectually exhausted when I graduated from high school. Up until that point, my whole life has been working towards the goal of getting into college. Knowing that my position at COA was secured, I got to relax and do what I like and spend time with the people I love. This break refueled my thirst to learn and was great preparation for the beginning of my college career. This is a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. During my gap year, I realized that 1) I love photography, 2) I love my family more than I thought I did, 3) I love nature but hate it when it's cold and wet, and 4) I like making things. A great opportunity to focus on the people you love. Spend more time with your family, friends, go travel, meet new people, make new memories!” Class of 2019 student.
“I thought I wanted to take a gap year until a couple weeks before I had to commit to COA. I knew that COA was the college for me and I was SO excited to go, but I felt like I was rushing into college just because that’s what was expected of me. I randomly ran into some COA students and talked with them about my struggle to decide. They didn’t push me into any direction, no ‘do’ or ‘don’t do’ but just hearing them talk about their classes and the community was really inspiring to me and helped me realize that COA was going to help me realize more about myself than a gap year could. But it really is a personal choice. Good luck!” Class of 2020 student.
As gap years continue to grow in popularity in the U.S., more students will be in this boat. As our students have said, it is such a personal choice and is dependent on a number of things. We hope you will take a breath and rejoice in whatever decision you make!
