Sorry I'm gonna be ramping on the differences in the live action once again. This is where they just flopped so hard! It's crazy how they revamped this arc (in an actually cool way), but made Usopp a side character in his own arc!
You can see this stark contrast in the original. First off, Luffy and Zoro don't do ANYTHING and WOULDN'T have ever done anything if not for Usopp first giving his all to warn the village, being reduced to humiliation and tears for it, and STILL wanting to protect them. Usopp inspired them! And during the fight against the Black Cat Pirates, he commanded the situation! The others did as he said and moved after he moved. This example I have pictured here is when HE, despite being injured, still took command and directed the kids and Kaya away from the situation, saving them. Then we all know after this, he defeats Jango, saving Kaya's life and completely foiling Kuro's plan, and while Zoro got Usopp there, he stepped aside and just aided Usopp because he knew and believed that Usopp would win.
Luffy may have been the one to take down the big bad, but Usopp was the hero of this arc. They wouldn't have succeeded, or even begun, without Usopp. Usopp is INCREDIBLE and they screwed up conveying that in the live action!! and I'm mad about it! 😭

One Piece's most forgotten villain, and why he matters
One Piece has become, in my opinion, a genuine great work of literature of the 21st century - not in the sense that I want to hold it up against Nobel Prize winners and rank them, but in the sense that literature can contain both Very Serious Real Literature™ and adventure stories for the young at heart and those things can be great without interfering with each other.
That said, One Piece has had over 25 years to get rolling, and those 25 years have not been without roadbumps. Plenty of them, in fact.
One of the very early story arcs, Syrup Village, has at times rather scuffed art, poorly paced exposition and storytelling, and a villain so forgettable that not even a manga author who is notorious for bringing back every seemingly inconsequential side-character for a big payoff has bothered to remember him.
But in that story arc, when you read it through the context of everything that's come after, you can find the seeds being sown of all of One Piece's most important themes and ideas: the use and abuse of power on both the personal and systematic level, warnings against the dangers of trusting those who cloak themselves in Respectability, and the conflict between manufactured history that serves the powerful and true history that empowers the weak.
Also, there's genuinely fantastic use of character design as a storytelling feature. Let's discuss.

Reading Syrup Village and being constantly reminded of how much OPLA messed up Usopp by turning him into a side character in his own fucking arc

Reading the manga and man Zoro has just been ride and die for everyone since day one and not just Luffy. He literally takes a hit meant for the enemy when Usopp tried to back him up (since Zoro was fighting 2-1 with just one sword) because he didn’t want Usopp to draw the enemy’s attention to him and Nami. He has literally just met Usopp and he’s already doing so much

So I was thinking… how did the people of Syrup Village react after Usopp’s ‘God Usopp’ with his actual picture came out? Like the boys and Kaya said no one believed them about usopp being wanted, and his ‘God Usopp’ wanted poster is the first real picture of Usopp released.
Like can you imagine being a citizen of syrup village? Like this kid who used to wake you up everyday screaming about pirates suddenly accuses the most respected man in the village of being a pirate. Then the next day he just is never heard from again. The butler guy left the same day, Kaya and Mery saying he had family or something to take care of. Then a few months later Kaya and the kids come running around with new wanted posters yelling about how the new rookie upstart Strawhat Luffy has Usopp of all people in his crew. But the picture and the name don’t match Usopp and despite what the kids claim, you never remember the pirate even coming to town.
Then two years later this absolute crazy kid who punched a Celestial Dragon, who declared war on the world and who vanished from sight for two years is back and one of his crew members has a really familiar look. Then the wanted posters are delivered and you see the village liar with an absolute badass looking photo and his name on the poster BUT he’s being called ‘God’ now and being assigned a reward of 200 million. Like I would probably run into the tavern and start yelling my head off.

One Piece — "We're friends, right? So get on."
From Volume 5 - Chapter 41 / Season 1 Episode 17. Captain Kuro is defeated, and Merry has given the Straw Hats a new ship to set sail on! Usopp wants to go out to sea, and without even asking, he's offered a spot on the same ship!

Ohh man I don't know why some people don't like this arc very much. It's filled with such real, and very relatable, emotion!
This panel especially got me 'cause like, Usopp was just barely running through town, trying to warn all these people he knows and loves and grew up with about the imminent, very real pirate attack that is going to happen, and they don't believe him. No matter how much he pleads. He then at least tries to save one of his best friends, this girl is cares deeply about... But she also doesn't believe him. And in fact gets so mad at him she slaps him and tells him to go away.
So you end up with this panel of Usopp looking back at the village full of people he loves but can't help and he just starts sobbing. It hurts! Especially when a lot of it is a problem of his own making!!
And isn't that just the kicker? We all have these unfortunate, frustrating, even devastating things that happen to us, and many times it's something that wouldn't have been as bad if we hadn't made certain choices to make it worse 😭 And you just cry at the situation and cry for yourself and hate yourself a little.
I just Usopp. I love his character and the arcs he goes through.

📺 Re-Watching OPLA, random comments:
Episode 3
I love how the story arc has been developed and that everything takes place in Kaya's house. I like that she's at the centre of the story and more involved in the action (I'll add more in my comments on Ep.4) and the dinner all together;
The kitchen set in an empty swimming pool? Brilliant!
Night-time chat between girls and guys talking about feelings? Chef's kiss! (I recently discovered the meaning of this expression referring to Usopp chef's kiss when talking about Going Merry. And I started to use it everywhere 😂);
How much I want to squish Koby's cheeks!
Funky bar? Oh I love that reference!
